- Amphibians and reptiles of Isla Santay (Durán, Ecuador)

Historically, this island has also been affected by anthropic landscape changes which limit the occurrence of certain species and favors the dispersion of opportunistic or more tolerant species. Such species dynamics tend to be more evident on islands, since their isolation limits species’ mobility. We present an updated checklist of the herpetofauna of Isla Santay Durán, Ecuador, and report for the first time the occurrence of two introduced species, Anolis sagrei Duméril & Bibron, 1837, Brown Anole, and Hemydactylus frenatus Duméril & Bibron, 1836. - New records of semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha) from
the Caatinga biome, Brazil Abstract: Check List 19(3): 311-338 DOI : 10.15560/19.3.311 Authors : Juliana Mourão dos Santos Rodrigues, Felipe Ferraz Figueiredo Moreira : Semiaquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Gerromorpha) are small to mid-sized insects, currently represented by more than 2,100 known species distributed on all continents, except for Antarctica. So far, 244 species have been recorded from Brazil, but only 63 from the Northeast Region of the country. The relatively small number of species in this region is related to the virtual lack of knowledge on the fauna of the Caatinga, a biome that is distributed essentially throughout this region. We present here new records for 28 species based on material collected in four Federal Conservation Units of the Caatinga biome: Aiuaba Ecological Station (Ceará state), Chapada Diamantina National Park (Bahia state), Catimbau National Park (Pernambuco state), and Serra das Confusões National Park (Piauí state). Moreover, several species are recorded for the first time from at least one of these states: 11 from Bahia, ten from Ceará, two from Pernambuco, and eight from Piauí. Two individuals were found roosting in the roof of a cabin of the Luna Nueva Hotel ecolodge in Peñas Blancas, San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica. We report the first record of this species from Belitung, a remote Island in Indonesia, based on photographs. The new record is approximately 150 km to the east of the nearest locality on Bangka Island, Indonesia. - Newly recorded for the vascular flora of Lebanon: Ferula biverticellata

The species has a distribution extending from Mount Hermon, the Golan, and the Hauran in South Syria to the Negev and Transjordan. - Annotated checklist of amphibians and reptiles from Querétaro, Mexico,

The herpetofauna of Querétaro is composed of 136 species, 35 amphibians (seven caudates and 28 anurans) grouped in nine families and 20 genera; 101 reptiles (five turtles, 33 lizards, and 63 snakes) grouped in 20 families and 59 genera. We did not include 13 previous records that do not have adequate evidence. We include three newly reported species for Querétaro: Coniophanes imperialis (Baird & Girard, 1859), Scaphiodontophis annulatus (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854), and Xenosaurus newmanorum (Taylor, 1949). A total of 69 species (51% of the total species) are endemic to Mexico, while one species, Sceloporus exsul (Dixon, Ketchersid & Lieb, 1972), is endemic to the state. According to Mexican law (SEMARNAT NOM-059), 50 species are threatened or under special protection, while according to the IUCN red list, only 11 species are under some category of risk. We suggest that a greater survey effort for amphibians and reptiles is required to discover unrecorded species in those areas that have not been sufficiently sampled. This species was collected in an upland Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. We provide taxonomic information, distribution map, implications for its conservation status, photographs, and a identification key for the Vitex Tour. ex L. species from Ceará. - An annotated checklist of Prioninae Latreille, 1802 (Coleoptera,
Cerambycidae) of Lithuania Abstract: Check List 19(2): 251-262 DOI : 10.15560/19.2.251 Authors : Vytautas Tamutis, Romas Ferenca, Vitalijus Bačianskas : We present the first annotated checklist of the subfamily Prioninae Latreille, 1802 (Coleoptera, Ceram-bycidae) in Lithuania. At least 140 published and unpublished records of Prioninae were analyzed and collected specimens were verified. As a result, one species, Aegosoma scabricorne (Scopoli, 1763), was found to be new for Lithuanian fauna and three species, Ergates faber (Linnaeus, 1761), Tragosoma depsarium (Linnaeus, 1767), and Prionus coriarius (Linnaeus, 1758), were confirmed in the country. Geoffroy & St.-Hilaire, 1806) in San Juan prov-ince, Argentina. A male, determined as a juvenile by its degree of ossification of the epiphyses of the phalanges and the color and texture of the fur, was found on 31 August 2021 in a suburban area 2.44 km south of the city of San Juan. This new report increases the richness of bat species in the province and expands the distribution of this spe-cies towards the west of the country. 1821) (Passeriformes, Corvidae), to southeastern Brazil Abstract: Check List 19(2): 225-230 DOI : 10.15560/19.2.225 Authors : Guilherme Sementili-Cardoso, Reginaldo José Donatelli : Cyanocorax cyanopogon (Wied-Neuwied, 1821), a bird endemic to Brazil, inhabits dry scrub and woodlands and the borders of tropical and riparian forests. Although C. cyanopogon is more common in central and northeastern Brazil, owing to increasing deforestation, its distribution has expanded to south. There are several records of this species outside its distribution as usually given. Here, we present the southernmost record of this species in Brazil, showing this species’ expansion to the Southeastern Region. Whale (Cetacea, Ziphiidae, Mesoplodon), and other beaked whales in Suriname, South America Abstract: Check List 19(2): 209-214 DOI : 10.15560/19.2.209 Authors : Marijke N. de Boer, Michiel van den Bergh, Monique Pool, Tomas Willems : A group of Mesoplodon europaeus (Gervais, 1885), Gervais’ Beaked Whales, were recorded along the Demerara Plateau (Suriname) at depths of 2,300 and 2,700 m. These are the first records of the species within the Guiana Basin. The Demerara Plateau may well offer an important habitat for deep-diving beaked whales, but further research is needed. We emphasize that, in light of a recent increase in oil and gas exploitation activities, there is an urgency to develop effective regionally and nationally specific conservation measures for whales in Suriname. Photographs, a map of occurrences in Brazil, a description, and comments on the morphology and taxonomy of B. egensis are provided, as well as an identification key to the Bacopa species of Maranhão. These new records are important due to the scarcity of collections of B. egensis from Brazil. The new data expand the longitudinal distribution of this species in the country and are an especially important contribution to the flora of Maranhão. The identification of Pheidole species is challenging, thus contributing to the description of several questionable morphospecies in the literature and making the geographic distribution of most species uncertain. In this work, we present the first records of Pheidole tijucana Borgmeier, 1927 from the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The specimens were recorded at Parque Ibirapuera Conservação, an urban green area located in the southern part of the city of São Paulo. The sampling was performed in 2015, 2016, and 2017 using pitfall traps. In total, 224 specimens (one major worker and 223 minor workers) of P. tijucana were recorded. Segerer : Epermenia sinjovi Gaedike, 1993, a species with a hitherto westernmost known occurrence in Central Siberia, is recorded from the European Alps (Tyrol, Austria and Bavaria, Germany). Its identification is based on DNA barcodes and morphological characteristics. The probability of a recent introduction is considered as very low due to the remoteness and wild nature of the habitat, and it seems likely that the species was previously over-looked due to its similarity to Epermenia chaerophyllella (Goeze, 1783). In Peninsular Malaysia, it was previously reported from seven localities. Since then, H. typus has been reported from several new localities based on observations from recent field surveys. This new record extends the geographic range of H. longipes by approximately 554 km west of the nearest previously known locality, on the River Momón, department of Loreto, Peru. The observation was in an area in which forestry and silvicultural activities are carried out for the sustainable exploitation of logging and timber of Pinus oocarpa in Las Lechuzas, department of Olancho (eastern Honduras). This record supports the initiation of new conservation activities in areas in which forestry is being implemented; population studies and the protection of their refuges are the priorities at its southernmost locality. Although the species is not presently considered as established in the country, citizen-science initiatives in order to raise awareness and monitor its presence are ongoing. These records extend the known distribution of the species 87 km northwest of the nearest pre-existing record in Guatemala. Additionally, based on these new records and an exhaustive literature review, we present an updated distribution for the species and revise its known elevational range to 300–2110 m. - Fish fauna of the trans-Andean Tumbes river basin in northern Peru

Cortijo, Hernán Ortega : To update the knowledge of the ichthyofauna of the Tumbes River basin, we provide a list of species. We report 47 species of fishes, grouped into 23 families and 11 orders. Characiformes was the most diverse order with 12 species (25.5% of the total richness), followed by Carangiformes with eight species (17%). In our study, two species are newly reported from this river basin: Pseudophallus starksii (Jordan & Culver, 1895) and Evorthodus minutus Meek & Hildebrand 1928. According to salinity tolerance, the ichthyofauna is composed of 20 primary, 14 secondary, and 13 peripheral species. Despite having the highest diversity of fish on the Peruvian Pacific slope, the Tumbes river basin is one of the most polluted coastal drainages. This study compiles information on the ichthyofauna of the entire basin, increases the known diversity of freshwater fish from trans-Andean drainages in Peru, and can be used in the management and conservation of the Tumbes River. Most of the sampled marine species are widely distributed and many are important commercial species for the artisanal fisheries. The addition of records from existing inventories and online collections increases the number of species to 245, of which 11 are threatened (critically endangered or vulnerable) and six are introduced. Our study provides an updated list of fish species of the estuaries along the semiarid coast of Brazil and is intended as a subsidy for further research, conservation and management efforts. In May 2022, a male specimen of L. falcifer was collected in the Way Sekampung River, Lampung Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. This represents the first record of this species outside of Java. This new record expanded the species distribution about 300 km to the north, and to an additional island within the Indonesian archipelago. The occurrence of this species on the island of Sumatra likely changes its conservation status; thus, new conservation actions may be more appropriate for the species and its known populations. The presence of L. falcifer on separate islands indicates that biogeographic interpretations of Indonesian fishes may change and highlights the need for urgent study of freshwater biodiversity in the region. Methods including repeated pitfall trap sampling and manual searching were used to collect ants at Providence College and a rapid biological assess-ment was conducted at Roger Williams Park. A total of 36 species were identified based on morphology, including the first observations of a colony of Needle Ants (Brachyponera chinensis Emery, 1895) in New England. Twenty-six species identified were new county records and seven species were new state records, representing a substantial update to the list of known ant species in Rhode Island, currently totaling 41 species in Providence and 69 spe-cies from six subfamilies across the state. These results are comparable with similarly scaled surveys conducted at parks and cities across the world, and they also offer a reminder that while urbanization can be associated with reductions in habitat availability for some fauna, cities can be accessible and ecologically important locations for exploring myrmecological biodiversity. We document the species of holoplanktonic mollusks collected in the surface waters (10 m depth) during an oceanographic expedition in the Campeche Canyon, southern Gulf of Mexico, during the February 2011 winter storm (“Nortes”) season. Organisms were collected using a close/open/close net system. Eighteen species belonging to 12 genera and nine families of pteropods were identified. Three species of Pterotrachoidea were identified. Limacina trochiformis (d’Orbigny, 1835), Heliconoides inflatus (d’Orbigny, 1835), and Creseis conica (Eschscholtz, 1829) were the species with highest density values (600.3, 678.5, and 746.8 ind · 100 m−3, respectively). The results presented here contribute to the knowledge of this group of organisms in oceanic waters of the southern Gulf of Mexico, especially during a time of year where observations are scarce. We provide an updated checklist of vascular epiphytes in Darjeeling Himalaya. A total of 239 vascular epiphyte species belonging to 93 genera and 38 families have been recorded from the region, which include holoepiphytes, hemiepiphytes, facultative and accidental epiphytes. Orchidaceae was the largest family with 70 species, followed by Polypodiaceae comprising 42 species. We make available baseline biodiversity information on vascular epiphytes of the study area and provide details on taxonomic diversity and distribution in terms of vegetation types and along the elevational gradient. Although an increasing number of floristic studies has been carried out in Angola in recent years, the country is still considered to be underinvestigated as many species being collected were previously unknown there. Several scientific groups working in different parts of Angola contributed to this paper their data from biodiversity assessments. With this we can add 67 species newly recorded for Angola, including two new generic records and five alien species, to the almost 7,300 vascular plant taxa known so far for Angola. Most of the new records for Angola are also present in different neighbouring countries, but they are little known, and their IUCN threat status has not been assessed yet. The Atlantic Forest is the phytogeographic domain with the greatest number of Sematophyllaceae species, which are either exclusive to this domain or shared with the Caatinga and/or Cerrado. However, anthropogenic activities pose a grave threat to the avian diversity of these islands. We conducted a three-year (2017–2019) avifaunal survey using mist-nets to inventory the avian species of the islands. We recorded 37 species in 22 families. Seventeen species are Philippine endemic, one species is of conservation concern, and two species are newly recorded from the Dinagat Islands. We also present an annotated checklist of bird species of the Dinagat Islands based on our own surveys, three published studies, and an online database; 246 species in 71 families are included. The results of our study highlight the need for further assessment to conserve the island’s avifaunal community, especially with increasing threats of anthropogenic disturbance. The Hyrcanian forests are a unique remnant of natural broadleaf temperate forests, with an evolutionary history that can be traced to the Tertiary and a high diversity tree species. Here we present the first checklist of saproxylic beetles in the Hyrcanian forests, including 398 species of saproxylic beetles, belonging to 207 genera and 46 families, identified by us. Based on our results and literature data, at least 670 saproxylic beetles occur in the Hyrcanian forests. The bias in our results towards some families supports the view that the detection of additional species can be expected, particularly from the forests with a greater diversity of tree species. - Monitoring diversity and abundance of mammals with camera-traps: a case

We conducted camera-trapping (n = 473) to determine diversity, species composition, relative abundance index, sampling effort, and conservation status of mammals in forested habitats of Manas National Park, Assam, India. Camera stations accumulated data over 11,388 trap nights over three sampling years: 2017–2019. Camera-traps recorded 34 mammalian species belonging to seven orders, 15 families, and 29 genera, with 22,738 independent records. Among them, 17 species are globally threatened or 50% of the recorded species. The species accumulation curve reached an asymptote, indicating an adequate sampling design for obtaining a robust inventory of the mammalian community. Despite a history of ethnopolitical conflict, almost all mammals expected to occur in the park were detected. In October 2019, we found an individual of this species beside Hongje Stream in Seoul. Utricularia breviscapa differs from the its aquatic congeners in South America by the presence of a whorl of 3–7 basally connate cylindrical floats at the base of the floral scape, and by the primary and secondary leaf-segments arranged into groups of threes. The geographic distribution of T. flavilineata appears to be restricted to mid-elevations in various oak woodlands which have been limited in area by agriculture. The species was found in the Brasília National Park, in Brasília, Distrito Federal, in the core region of the Cerrado. We also undertook a survey of collection sites in Brazil for species of Eurystyles and Lankesterella Ames, which together form the epiphytic clade of Spiranthinae, in order to create an updated distribution map. Previously identified only in the Atlantic Forest and Pampa, we note that some species of these two genera also occur in the Cerrado and Caatinga domains. - Amphibian and reptile diversity along a ridge-to-reef elevational gradient

Brown : Despite multiple recent field studies, herpetological species diversity of the Romblon Island Group in the central Philippines—particularly Sibuyan Island—has remained underestimated. Recently, we investigated the diversity of the herpetofauna of Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park, based on an elevational transect (10–1557 m a.s.l.). Our surveys resulted in a total of 47 species of amphibians and reptiles, including 14 new island records and one atypical occurrence of a snake species recorded for the first time from a high elevation (939 m a.s.l). These new records constitute a notable increase (21%) in Sibuyan’s herpetological species diversity as compared to surveys from a decade ago. We also provide updates of the taxonomy and identification of species endemic to this island (e.g., members of the genera Platymantis Günther, 1858, Brachymeles Duméril & Gibron, 1839, and Pseudogekko Taylor, 1922), and discuss the importance of continued surveys and field-derived data to inform conservation status assessments of Sibuyan’s unique assemblage of amphibians and reptiles. The results of our record examinations, in conjunction with long-term field surveys and a review of Friedrich Carl Lehmann’s travel logs, indicate that A. lehmanni occurs in the Cordilleras Central and Occidental of Colombia. It has its center of diversity in the Philippines and this paper presents the first comprehensive record of Pachyrhynchini fauna in Davao City. Data gathering was done through a combination of belt transect, photo documentation, and opportunistic sampling techniques. Materials were collected from trees and shrubs in twelve selected green spaces in Davao City using handpicking and bush beating techniques between 2016 and 2019. A total of 1103 individuals consisting of 32 species and two genera-Pachyrhynchus Germar and Metapocyrtus Heller, were documented. Thirty (30) species (93.75%) are endemic to Mindanao, while fifteen (15) species (46.88%) are considered vulnerable based on Department of Environment and Natural Resources Administrative Order No. 2019-09.
