  • Analysing a major risk factor for the quality of the Bistrița River:
mining activities in the Suceava County

    • Authors: IONCE Ruxandra
      Pages: 1 - 13
Abstract: Mining has been one of the main drivers of the economy in the Suceava County. However, both during and after the cessation of mining activities, in addition to incorrect or incomplete closure procedures, pollution events have been recorded, as mine waters continue to be discharged into the dense hydrographic network around the Bistrița River. The Bistrița River, the most important watercourse along the mining perimeters analysed, collects all the waters that cross the contaminated sites and carry along pollutants that not only affect the water quality, but also the aquatic ecosystems and, indirectly, human health. The present paper sets out to analyse the influence of the polluted waters carried by the Puciosu, Crucea, Isipoaia and Neagra Șarului creeks based on a quantitative evaluation of specific indicators and a qualitative risk evaluation matrix.

  • Evaluation of the bioclimate of submontane resorts located between
Sucevița and Slănic Moldova based on the THI index

    • Authors: ROȘU Constantin, MIHAILA Dumitru, BISTRICEAN Petruţ-Ionel
      Pages: 14 - 28
Abstract: The present study aims to evaluate the bioclimatic potential of the submontane region between Sucevița and Slănic Moldova based on the THI thermo-hygrometric index, for which we used monthly data covering the period 1961-2013. From the analysis of this index, we aimed to identify the annual and multiannual regime of bioclimatic features for the targeted study area.  The purpose of this study is to highlight the favorable periods of the year, when the comfortable and favorable time for outdoor activities prevails. The information obtained reinforces that there are resorts in the submontane contact area along the alignment between Sucevița and Slănic Moldova has a sedative-indifferent bioclimate, sparing with long periods of the year (from May to September) favorable for outdoor tourism activities: hiking, cycling, mountain biking, Nordic walking.

  • Application of the Angot (k) pluviometric index to Cotnari Weather Station
           in the period 1961-2020

    • Authors: APOPEI Lidia Maria, MIHAILA Dumitru
      Pages: 29 - 38
Abstract: The paper presents the application of the Angot Rainfall Index (k) to highlight the characteristics of the annual variation of atmospheric precipitation and climatic features of each month in Cotnari. The analysis of precipitation data from 1961-2020 at Cotnari Weather Station, highlights dry monthly intervals every year. January (95% of cases) is the driest, followed by December 88.5%, February 86.7% and March 81.8%. The low values of precipitation are reflected in the reserve of deficient soil moisture and the delays in the beginning of spring agrotechnical practices. The summer months are characterized by an appreciable degree of coverage of the water needs of the soil, the rainiest month being June. It should be mentioned that the summer rains are characterized by short duration (1-2 hours) and are episodes of atmospheric precipitation with a great variability, depending both on the characteristics of the general circulation of the atmosphere at continental level and on the particularities of the active surface.

  • Mapping the effects of the 23 July 2020 hailstorm that occurred in
           Suceava, Romania

    • Authors: DRĂGOIU Bogdan-Alexandru
      Pages: 39 - 48
Abstract: The hailstorm and accompanying winds that affected the city of Suceava on 23 July 2020 and neighboring areas compromised crops, uprooted and broke trees, and caused minor damage to buildings. Field observations to plant life and buildings were conducted in order to assess the extent of the damage. Scores were given to crop health state on a scale ranging from no damage to total crop loss, in order to map out the affected territory and the degree of damage sustained by the vegetation. Based on these observations, a hazard map for this particular event was generated, showing the extent of the destruction. Weather data like wind speed, temperature, rain quantity and barometric pressure was collected from privately owned weather stations operated inside the affected area. Graphs based on the weather telemetry were included in the paper to better understand the scale and the time frame of the event. Beside documenting the impact of this weather event, the study also showed the utility of using a network of low cost, automated weather stations, for providing local weather data to a level of detail otherwise impossible to access. It was concluded that the damage inflicted to vegetation affected 9 administrative districts on a total area of 80 km2 in a time span of 30 minutes.

  • Peculiarities regarding environmental protection in Romania. Regional
           analysis

    • Authors: ULMAN Simona-Roxana, DOBAY Krisztina-Melinda
      Pages: 49 - 64
Abstract: A sustainable development cannot be achieved without strategies and policies aiming to preserve the natural resources and ecosystems. Along with collective actions, increasing the level of general awareness regarding environmental protection, nowadays, in the context of the actual environmental crisis, is almost mandatory also at individual level. In our study, we analyzed the evolution of perceptions related to the priority given to environmental protection in the eight development regions of Romania, using data from World Values Survey (waves 1994-1998; 2005-2009; 2010-2014; 2017-2020). The entry data showed an interesting evolution of these perceptions and highlighted two regions with significant levels of concern towards environmental protection: West and Bucharest-Ilfov. We also attempted to identify if there are different regional patterns regarding the actions for protecting environment, i.e. the expenditures for environmental protection, the active involvement in ecological movements, the behavior towards municipal waste recycling, existence of green spaces, as indicators of the level of concrete participation in pro-environmental activities, in relation to the average personal incomes and spending. In this regard, we applied the Principal Component Analysis and the Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, as a complementary measure for the first one. The results showed major differences between the eight regions of Romania, observing that the ones with high values of medium personal income and spending also register high levels of involvement in environmental protection. The major differences were observed between Bucharest-Ilfov, on one hand, and, North-East, South-Muntenia and South-West Regions of Romania, on the other hand.

  • Ecological impact of mining brownfields in Bucovina (Romania)

    • Authors: CHIRIȚĂ Viorel, MATEI Daniela
      Pages: 65 - 78
Abstract: The decline of mining activities in Romania has led to the appearance of large areas of mining waste, buildings and decommissioned equipment. Known by the name of mining wastelands, they challenge both the environment as well as the communities in which they are located. The problems created by the mining wastelands generate shock waves in the development of the rural territories hosting them and block their sustainable development. This paper highlights the stages of the evolution of different types of mining wastelands in Bukovina, with an emphasis on the environmental component, as well as on their possible integration using various forms of valorization. The data was gathered in 2017 as part of a research called “La dynamique des paysages culturels intégrant des aires avec des friches minières. Rétrospectives et perspectives géographique en Bucovine (Roumanie) et en Wallonie (Belgique)”, funded by “L`Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie”. We used the Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM) methodology to assess the environmental impact of mining wastelands, which included 5 evaluation criteria and 15 components investigated (6 physical-geographical and ecological components, plus 9 socio-economic and cultural ones). The findings indicate that the ecological impact of abandoned mining areas is directly related to the area they occupy as well as the morphoclimatic system in which they are located. The socioeconomic component analysis highlighted the role of mine closure in increasing unemployment and lowering living standards, as well as a community takeover of some infrastructure elements through direct involvement of local government.

  • Study on the perception of the oenological tourism potential of the
           Moldavian Region, Romania

    • Authors: NENIU Adelina-Iuliana
      Pages: 79 - 92
Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the perception of the potential tourists on wine tourism in Moldavia region. The area under study represents Romania’s largest wine region, concentrating about 38% of the total area covered by vineyards and about 47% of the area under grafted bearing vineyards. Similarly, the counties comprised within the wine region of the Moldavian Hills supply 40% of the total quantity of grapes and 38% of the quantity of wine grapes produced in Romania. The importance of the region is underlined by the existence of 12 vineyards and 55 wine centres; thus, for the recognition of the quality and particularities of their wines, there are several Controlled Designation of Origin/CDO. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the perception of a random sample, consisting of 140 people from different regions of Romania (and the Republic of Moldova), on the importance of the wine potential and the tourist capitalization of the oenological patrimony of the region. It was found that most respondents practised wine tourism both in the country and in other states, some of them even visiting Moldavia region. Most of the respondents fall into the category of young people, which led to different perceptions of wine tourism and to various expectations related to its practice in Moldavia region, especially when compared to other categories of tourists. The personal experience of practicing this type of tourism has led to answers based on the reality perceived by the respondents, both with the advantages of Moldavia and with the issues inherent in a developing region, especially those related to the promotion and capitalization of the wine tourism potential. Respondents also provided solutions to reduce problems in the region's development and suggested that institutions be involved in achieving them.

  • Typological analysis of agricultural holdings in Western Moldova

    • Authors: CUCIUREANU Maria-Simona, NEPOTU Grigore
      Pages: 93 - 104
Abstract: The study aims to analyze agricultural holdings in western Moldova in 2010, according to data from the Agricultural Census. Farms play an important role at international and national level because they capitalize on the agricultural potential of land, animals and agricultural machinery, contributing to the creation of a modern agriculture that develops the rural economy. Western Moldova stands out in Romania with a high agricultural potential, but which is not sufficiently exploited. The economy of this area is precarious, especially in rural areas, being currently in an early stage of development due to the development of agricultural holdings. The study aims to develop spatial typologies that analyze at the territorial level, in Western Moldova, the areas that capitalize on agricultural land by using agricultural holdings, depending on the agricultural area used, the size of the agricultural area used, the way of owning the agricultural area. The final result is the analysis of agricultural typologies, depending on the classification of agricultural holdings, which is done by standardizing the values of the indicators used and highlighting the positive and negative deviations, establishing the profile of each basic administrative unit.
