  • Phacopid trilobites in post-Taghanic Givetian through Frasnian cephalopod
limestones, Montagne Noire (France) and related areas (Thuringia, Morocco)

    • Abstract: Feist R, Klapper G; Vol. 97, issue 1, pages 1 - 32
This paper establishes the ranges of late Givetian and Frasnian phacopid trilobites with reference to the Frasnian conodont zonation. The ranges integrate both hitherto formally known and numerous new taxa that were recovered from outer shelf limestones primarily in the Montagne Noire (southern France) and incidentally in related areas; i.e. Thuringia and SE Morocco. Though considering twice the number of genera and species as previously known, the distribution of phacopids emphasises the generally admitted low diversity in the time interval between the Taghanic and Kellwasser crises. New evidence highlights the fact that diversity rates did not remain constant over the period but increased slightly in mid- and late Frasnian times. The currently proposed lower-middle Frasnian substage boundary at the base of the punctata Zone (FZ 5) is supported by two major innovations at the generic level. The investigated outer shelf phacopids are all characterised by reduced eyes with either a reduced visual surface or with forwardly positioned and diminutive eye lobes. In the systematic part the following taxa are presented: Cronierella gen. nov. with the new species: C. gallica, C. postera, C. expansa, C.' sp. nov. A; Occitanella gen. nov. with the new species: O. postinflexa, O. hexagonalis, and O.' sp. indeterminate; Chlupacops Feist, 2016 with the new species C. angularis, C. narbonnensis, C. clapassousensis, C. migrans, C. rectannulatus; Acutiphacops gen. nov. with the new species: A. tchrafinensis, A. medius; Acuticryphops prorotundus sp. nov.; Girardina gen. nov. with the new species: G. konradbartzschi, G. consimilis, and with G.' liopyga (Richter, 1863).

  • Bryozoan fauna from the Kunda Stage (Darriwilian, Middle Ordovician) of
           Estonia and NW Russia

    • Abstract: Ernst A; Vol. 97, issue 1, pages 33 - 68
Bryozoan fauna from several outcrops of sediments of the Kunda Stage (Darriwilian, Middle Ordovician) of Estonia and NW Russia contains 18 species which belong to the palaeostomate orders Cystoporata, Esthonioporata, Trepostomata, and Cryptostomata. The studied material comes mainly from the collection of the Department of Geology, Tallinn University of Technology, as well as was specimens I have collected. One genus with one species and one more species are new: Pakripora cavernosa gen. et sp. nov. and Dianulites pakriensis sp. nov. Four bryozoans are identified to genus level only. One cryptostome bryozoan shows unique morphology unknown in any similar genera. In general, the studied fauna shows close relations to other localities within the Baltic region, with some few relations to the Ordovician of China. The bryozoans developed massive and erect colonies, showing adaptation to the shallow to moderately deep environment with moderate water energy and relatively high level of sedimentation.

  • Not quite social - possible cases of gregarious behaviour of immatures of
various lineages of Insecta in 100-million-year-old amber

    • Abstract: Hörnig MK, Haug C, Müller P, Haug JT; Vol. 97, issue 1, pages 69 - 87
The evolution of sociality in insects is a highly discussed topic in biology. Fossil findings are rarely included into the consideration, although they have a great potential to add also behavioural aspects to evolutionary reconstructions and can provide information about the minimum age of specific lifestyles in deep time. We briefly summarise concepts of reconstructing behaviour based on fossils and give a short overview of the concept of eusociality. The focus of this paper is the description of new findings of fossilised cases of aggregations in Cretaceous Myanmar amber. All specimens enclosed in these amber pieces are immatures. These findings come from four different lineages of Insecta: Neuroptera, Dermaptera, Orthoptera and Collembola. Some of these groups are usually not considered as typical examples for social interactions, but several grades of aggregation behaviour can be observed in all of these groups in different species living today. Active aggregation behaviour (or gregarious behaviour) can be seen as part and prerequisite of further social behaviour. Therefore, the investigation of this aspect can add new insights for a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of complex strategies of social behaviour.

  • Summary of the fossil record of megalopteran and megalopteran-like larvae,
with a report of new specimens

    • Abstract: Baranov V, Haug C, Fowler M, Kaulfuss U, Müller P, Haug JT; Vol. 97, issue 1, pages 89 - 108
Megaloptera is one of the smaller (about 400 modern species) monophyletic ingroups of Holometabola, including fishflies, dobsonflies and alderflies. All these are united by a very similar morphology, a distinct merolimnic lifecycle (aquatic larva, terrestrial pupa and adult) and by the short lifespan of the winged adults. Megaloptera is generally considered to be sister group to Neuroptera within Neuropterida. Unfortunately, the fossil record of the group is extremely scarce. Here we review the fossil record of megalopteran larvae; due to the long-lasting larval phase, one could argue that this is, in fact, the life phase with the largest ecological impact. Larvae of megalopterans are even rarer in the fossil record. Interestingly, many known larvae are preserved in amber, despite their aquatic lifestyle. Moreover, we report new specimens, including a fossil from the Miocene Foulden Maar of New Zealand, the Eocene Green River Formation, as well as different specimens preserved in amber from the Cretaceous of Myanmar. The New Zealand specimen resembles larvae of Sialidae. The Green River specimen could be a representative of Sialidae. A larger, partly incomplete amber specimen could be a representative of Corydalidae. Several small amber specimens resemble early larval stages of Chauliodinae, but also differ in important aspects. We discuss what the scarce fossil record of megalopteran larvae can tell us about their palaeo-biology and environment.

  • Vertebrate diversity reveals perturbations in faunal communities prior to
the Hangenberg event in the Montagne Noire (France)

    • Abstract: Assemat A, Girard C, Joachimski MM, Adnet S; Vol. 97, issue 1, pages 109 - 122
The Hangenberg crisis represents a mass extinction marked by a biodiversity turnover at the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary. However, the last million years before this dramatic event have been poorly investigated. Here we report new data on the size and abundances of vertebrate remains as well as carbon isotope data from the latest Famennian in the Montagne Noire (France). A significant decrease in fish abundance and a general reduction in the size of vertebrate remains are observed during a period of stable environment before the onset of the Hangenberg crisis. No perturbations are recorded by the carbon isotopes, supporting the stability of the environment. This significant change in the structuration of vertebrate communities prior to the Hangenberg crisis is not linked to any turnover in other faunal groups. That could be interpreted as changes in faunal repartition that predate mass extinctions.

  • Black shales contamination and depositional paleoenvironment during the
Early Aptian OAE 1a in the Eastern Russian Platform

    • Abstract: Zorina SO; Vol. 97, issue 1, pages 123 - 140
The most pernicious consequences of the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a in the North-Eastern Peri- Tethys for benthic microfauna were oxygen decrease and the onset of sulphidic conditions, related to toxic enrichment in heavy metals which can be regarded as one of the main causes for biota distress and even their disappearance. Twenty-nine samples from the Tatar-Shatrashany borehole located in the Ulyanovsk-Saratov Trough (Eastern Russian Platform) were studied to estimate the extent of anoxia using trace element redox proxies and pyrite framboid morphology and distribution. The degree of contamination in toxic metals (As, Cd, Se, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mo, Cu, V, and W) is estimated for the Lower Aptian OAE 1a-related black shales of the Ulyanovsk Formation and compared with the results obtained for the Late Jurassic OAE-related black shales of the Promzino Formation and host mudrocks. The relationships between benthic foraminiferal abundance and diversity and black shales contamination in toxic metals are evaluated. Extreme contamination of the OAE 1a-related black shales in Mo and Cd in conjunction with the absence of oxygen could result in conditions not suitable for benthic foraminifers dwelling. The key species Mjatliukaena aptiensis (Mjatl.) is regarded to be one of the toxic-resistant species that successfully recovered from the OAE 1a anoxic stress. Comparing to the Late Jurassic OAE, the integrated data indicate moderately contaminated black shales and mainly dysoxic conditions under which habitat conditions were not completely detrimental for benthic foraminifers. The most toxic-resistant species was Lenticulina infravolgaensis (Furs. et Pol.).
