  • Gold Mountain, Big City: Ken Cathcart's 1947 Illustrated Map of San
Francisco's Chinatown by Jim Schein (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Chinatowns may well be the most widespread type of ethnic quarters in cities across the globe. From London to New York, Singapore to Los Angeles, immigrant Chinese created towns within towns. Geographers of many generations chronicled these spaces. Friedrich Ratzel, sometimes touted as the father of modern human geography, wrote about the diffusion of Chinese in his 1876 monograph, Die chinesische Auswanderung: Ein Beitrag zur Cultur- und Handelsgeographie. Almost a century later, Christopher Salter completed a provocative master's thesis in geography at the University of California, Berkeley, that deconstructed what is perhaps the most world-renowned Chinese quarter outside of the Middle Kingdom. Salter's study ... Read More

  • Unsettled Waters: Rights, Law, and Identity in the American West by Eric
           P. Perramond (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Water scarcity now plagues the western United States, with water shortages increasing in both intensity and frequency. Managing these shortages and properly allocating the limited supply have become increasingly important and controversial roles for states. Water law is often misunderstood, and the topic of adjudication—the process by which water rights are evaluated legally—is perhaps the most unclear facet of water law. Using the State of New Mexico as the predominant case study, Unsettled Waters unpacks the numerous issues surrounding water rights and adjudications. To properly manage water, you must have clear water rights. These rights are defined using the adjudication process, in which all parties claiming a ... Read More

  • The Pacific Northwest: A Crafted Regionalism of Power and Modernity

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Franklin Roosevelt and New Deal progressives had ambitions to reorganize the federal government during the Great Depression era (c. 1932–1939) and to construct a new American society through national planning. A symbiosis involving technology and nature presented opportunities to integrate regional patterns into a modern American society, redefining American individualism into an innovative American "Promised Land" collectivism. Whereas the old American sectional frontiers were all about the strong-handed pioneer with an axe and plow who took up free land to live a life independent of neighbors, a modern society would demand thought and planning to support its diverse constituents collectively, working together for ... • Changing Nature-Society Conditions and the Oyster Industry, Willapa Bay,
           Washington

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Rural landscapes and economics are most often associated with crop agriculture and livestock, but some locales are reliant on less-common resources. Among these settings are estuaries and activities associated with aquatic and tidal environments. Such places reckon with distinctive circumstances related to the physical environment, changes driven by human activities, and sociopolitical forces based on perceived conditions. Willapa Bay, in Pacific County, Washington, is one of these locales. It is an estuarine system, and it functions as an open system with respect to both physical/biological attributes and ... Abstract: Daniel Arreola presented his first professional paper to the Tucson APCG in 1976, a study from his master's thesis about the Sacramento Delta Chinatown of Locke, California. Since his return to the APCG region in 1990, after an early posting in the Lone Star state, he has been a regular contributor to the annual meetings on subjects about Mexican border towns and Mexican-American cultural landscapes. Following nearly three decades as a faculty member at Arizona State University, he retired to New Mexico in 2016 but still participates in the annual gatherings of the APCG. His contributions to the organization include editor of Pacifica, vice-president and president, co-chair of the 2005 Phoenix meeting, and chair of ... Read More

  • Editorial Notes

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this, the eighty-third volume of the Yearbook of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. Last year's volume was published in a time of great uncertainty as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, and this year's unfortunately arrives under similar conditions, slowly improving though they may be. The tragedies, disruptions, and general state of societal affairs during the pandemic will not soon be forgotten. The pandemic also generated uniquely historic circumstances for the Association. The most immediate of these was the cancellation of the 2020 annual meeting, one of only four such years (the other three being 1943–45, during WWII) that APCG had failed to ... Read More

  • Climate Response of a Dwarfed Population of Quercus marilandica in Central
           Illinois, United States

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Quercus marilandica is a relatively short-lived oak species of small to medium height (9 to 15 meters) found throughout the eastern U.S. (Abrams 1992; Carey 1992; Kartesz 2015; Reich and Hinckley 1980). Q. marilandica often grows in sandy soil lacking sufficient nutrients to support other tree species (Rosiere et al. 2019). Occasionally, when soil nutrients are especially poor, Q. marilandica grows less than 3.4 meters tall and is considered a "dwarf" tree (Garren 1943; Liming 1942; Reich and Hinckley 1980).Q. marilandica is understudied in tree-ring research, with only a single study that examined the climate-growth response (seasonal rainfall) of nondwarf trees in Oklahoma (Johnson and Risser 1973). The generally ... Read More

  • Surprise! Discoveries with a Field Methods Class

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Geography field methods classes may offer challenges. This is an analytical narrative of unexpected discoveries, of surprises encountered when we accompanied our students to various Long Beach sites. Revelations informed and demanded an altered geographic thinking.Long Beach is a bustling global port and a densely populated city of just over fifty square miles (129.5 square kilometers) with around 480,000 residents. An urban landscape with residential, retail, and industrial land uses, it also possesses cultural heritage sites, both European and Indigenous. Instructional planning for the fieldwork routine was a linear and rational ... Read More

  • Evaluating Best Practices for Macroscopic Charcoal-Based Fire History
Reconstructions through a Research Experience for Undergraduates

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the past several decades, macroscopic charcoal analysis (MCA) has emerged as the most widely used method for reconstructing long-term, local (i.e., approximately watershed-scale) fire histories (Clark and Patterson 1997; Clark et al. 1998; Whitlock and Anderson 2003 ; Gavin et al. 2007; Lafon et al. 2017). Charcoal particles, which are the by-product of the incomplete combustion of biomass during a wildfire, accumulate horizontally in lake, wetland, and other perennially wet sediments (Patterson, Edwards, and Maguire 1987; Scott 2010). Macroscopic charcoal particles >100 microns (µm) are separated from ... Read More

  • Institutionalized Racism: Redlined Districts Then and Now in Boston,
           Detroit, and Los Angeles

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the summer of 2020, the death of George Floyd sparked mass outrage and racial protests across the United States and around the world. One of the underlying issues of concern was institutional racism and how racial injustices have been normalized by state and federal practices and policies. Carmichael and Hamilton (1967) made the distinction between individual and institutional racism where the latter was covert, historical, and interconnected across respectable institutions within a society. This was not an ideological distinction but rather focused on the processes and results of racial inequalities by ... Read More

  • COVID-19 in Los Angeles: A Multivariate Analysis of Disease Infection
           Rates

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: When the venerable Forbes magazine ran an article titled "Why Geography Is a Key Part of Fighting the COVID-19 Coronavirus Outbreak" (Shepherd 2020) early in the pandemic, they reminded the public of something geographers and epidemiologists have known since the days of John Snow. Not only have geographers regularly contributed to the battle against COVID-19, but the spatial nature of the disease and the unusual availability of rich datasets have provided geographers with a bounty of research opportunities capable of shedding light on broader questions concerning a host of human behaviors and conditions. ... • Critical Theory for Geography Students I: Foucault and "Questions on
           Geography"

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This is the first in a series of essays I want to write to assist students in understanding some key critical theory that I see as being immensely beneficial to our field. My goal is not to just work through an essay or book, but also to advocate for theory's place in the discipline of geography. I have long seen how critical theory can be a bad word amongst some geographers as well as produce anxiety in students the first time they try to make sense of a foundational text. My first experiences with post-structuralist thought as a grad student were a mess, but through encouragement from professors and fellow students I eventually understood and benefited from some of these intellectual giants. And even if you don't ... Read More
