      The Virga-Sniffer, a new modular open-source Python package tool to characterize precipitation evaporation (so-called virga) from ceilometer cloud base height and vertically-pointing cloud radar reflectivity time-height fields is described. Results of its first application to RV Meteor observations during the EUREC4A field experiment in Jan–Feb 2020 are shown. About half of all detected clouds with bases below the trade inversion height were found to produce virga.

      Small atmospheric particles, such as smoke from wildfires or pollutants from human activities, impact cloud properties, and clouds have a strong influence on climate change. To better understand the distributions of these particles, we develop relationships to derive their concentrations from remote sensing measurements from an instrument called a lidar. Our method is reliable for smoke particles, and similar steps can be taken to develop similar relationships for other particle types.

      PurpleAir Sensors (PAS) are low-cost tools to measure fine particulate matter (PM) concentrations. However, the raw PAS data have significant biases, so the sensors must be corrected. We analyzed data from numerous sites and found that the standard correction to the PAS Purple Air data is accurate in urban pollution events and smoke events, but leads to a 6 fold underestimate in the PM2.5 concentrations in dust events. We propose a new correction algorithim to address this problem.

      To retrieve tropospheric ozone column information, we subtract stratospheric column data of BASCOE from TROPOMI/S5P total ozone columns.The new S5P-BASCOE data agree well with existing tropospheric data like OMPS-MERRA-2. The data are also compared to ozone soundings.The tropospheric ozone columns show the expected temporal and spatial patterns. We will also apply the algorithm to future UV nadir missions like Sentinel 4 or 5 or to recent and ongoing missions like GOME_2 or OMI.

      The quality control of sub-hourly rain gauge data is a challenging task due to the high variability and low spatial consistency of the data. We developed an innovative approach to the quality control of telemetric rain gauge data focused on assessing the reliability of individual observations. Our scheme employs weather radar data to detect erroneous rain gauge measurements and to assess the data reliability. The scheme is used operationally by the Polish meteorological and hydrological service.

      We present a new method to extract the gases from ice cores and measure their greenhouse gas composition. The ice is sublimated continuously with a near-infrared laser, releasing the gases, which are then analyzed on a laser absorption spectrometer. The main advantage over previous efforts is a low effective resolution of 1–2 cm. This capability is crucial for the analysis of highly thinned ice, as expected from ongoing drilling efforts to extend the ice core history further back in time.

      This work presents a methane flux rate retrieval methodology using the Sentinel-2 mission and validates the algorithm for different scenes and plumes. The detection limit is in the range 1000–2000 kg h−1 for homogeneous surfaces and above 5000 kg h−1 for heterogeneous ones. Dominant quantification errors are either wind-related or plume mask-related. For heterogeneous scenes, the surface structure underlying the methane plume can become a dominant source of uncertainty.

      Information on the viscosity of secondary organic aerosols is needed when making air quality, climate, and atmospheric chemistry predictions. Viscosity depends on temperature, so we developed a new method for measuring the temperature-dependent viscosity of small samples. As an application of the method, we measured the viscosity of farnesene secondary organic aerosol at different temperatures.

      Some of the new generation of cloud and precipitation spaceborne radars will adopt conically scanning. This will make some of the standard calibration techniques impractical. This work presents a methodology to cross-calibrate radars in orbits by matching the reflectivity probability density function of ice clouds observed by the to-be-calibrated and by the refence radar in quasi-coincident locations. Results show that cross-calibration within 1 dB (26 %) are feasible.

      We developed a high time resolution method for determining the δ13C values of WSOCp and WSOCg by combination of wet oxidation pretreatment and IRMS. With improvement of oxidation method and determination method, δ13C value of liquid sample with a carbon content between 0.5 to 5 μg can be determined with an accuracy of 0.6 ‰. Using this method, the δ13C value of WSOCp and WSOCg in winter of 2021 at an urban site of Nanjing were determined, which were -25.9 ± 0.7 ‰ and -29.9 ± 0.9 ‰ respectively.

      Visibility is how well we can see something. Visibility sensors, such as employed in meteorological observatories and airports, measure at a point at the instrument location, which may not be representative of visibilities further away, e.g. near the sea surface during sea spray. Light detecting and ranging (lidar) can measure visibility further away. We find wind lidar to be a viable tool to measure visibility with low accuracy, which could suffice for safety-uncritical applications.

      Locally higher radar reflectivity values in winter storms can mean more snowfall or a transition from snow to mixtures of snow, partially melted snow, and/or rain. We use the correlation coefficient to de-emphasize regions of mixed precipitation. Visual muting is valuable for analyzing and monitoring evolving weather conditions during winter storm events.

      A new ozone data set, derived from radiation measurements of the space-borne instrument MIPAS is presented. It consists of more than 2 million single ozone profiles from 2002–2012, covering virtually all latitudes, and altitudes between 5 and 70 km. Progress in data calibration and processing methods allowed a significant improvement of the data quality, compared to previous data versions. Hence, the data set will help to better understand, e.g., the time evolution of ozone in the Stratosphere.

      Photochemically induced changes in mesospheric O3 concentration at twilight can cause asymmetries in the distribution along the line of sight of a solar occultation observation, variations that must be considered in the retrieval algorithm. Correction factors developed from diurnal photochemical model simulations were used to modify the archived SAGE III/ISS mesospheric O3. For June 2021, the bias caused by the neglect of diurnal variations is more than 30 % at 64 km and low latitudes.

      In this work, we analyze polarized cloudbow observations of the airborne camera system specMACS to retrieve the cloud droplet size distribution, defined by the effective radius (reff) and the effective variance (veff). Two case studies of trade wind cumulus clouds measured during the EUREC4A field campaign are presented. The results are combined into maps of reff and veff with a very high spatial resolution (100 m by 100 m), that give new insights into the spatial distribution of the parameters.

      Satellite observations provide information on the sources of SO2, an important pollutant that affects both air quality and climate. However, these observations suffer from relatively poor data quality due to weak signals of SO2. Here, we use a machine learning technique to analyze satellite SO2 observations in order to reduce the noise and artifacts over relatively clean areas while keeping the signals near pollution sources. This leads to significant improvement in satellite SO2 data.

      Multicopter uncrewed aerial systems (UAS, also known as drones) are very easy to use systems for collecting data in the lowest part of the atmosphere. Wind and turbulence are parameters that are particularly important for understanding the dynamics in the atmosphere. Only with three-dimensional measurements of the wind can a full understanding can be achieved. In this study, we show how even the vertical wind through the UAS can be measured with good accuracy.

      We describe a new method for measuring the 3D spatial variations of water within clouds using the reflected light of the sun viewed at multiple different angles by satellites. This is a great improvement over older methods which typically assume that clouds occur in a slab shape. Our study used computer modeling to show that our 3D method will work well in cumulus clouds where older slab methods do not. Our method will inform us about these clouds and their role in our climate.

      This research demonstrates a new method for determination of the chemical reactivity of volatile organic compounds that are emitted from the leaves and needles of trees. These measurements allow elucidating if and how much of these emissions and their associated reactivity are captured and quantified by currently applicable chemical analysis methods.
