  • Influence of Blood Compressibility on Pulse Wave Propagation Properties
Based on Elastic Thin-Walled Tube Theory

    • Abstract: Pulse wave carries abundant physiological and pathological data about the human body. Understanding the effect of blood compressibility on the transmission qualities of pulse waves is necessary to detect, cure, and prevent cardiovascular problems. In this research, the fluid–solid coupling finite element analysis model of artery system was developed using COMSOL MultiPhysics software. The influence of blood compressibility on pulse wave propagation properties in the brachial artery was investigated using the blood volume compression modulus. Results show that the influence of blood compressibility on pulse wave propagation is relatively weak and may be ignored when evaluating the compressibility of blood and that the volume compression modulus swings 2GPa over and beyond the typical range of the human body. The influence of blood compressibility on the peak value of pressure pulse wave is minor. The attenuation amplitude of the peak value of a pulse wave is bigger for the case with compressible blood than those of case with incompressible blood, and the difference between compressible and incompressible models is less than 1%. But blood compressibility has a clear impact on pulse wave velocity. It is found that the pulse wave velocity is greater than that of blood flow velocity. These findings will be valuable to investigate deeply for evaluating pressure and velocity pulse waves, as well as in providing a waveform-based preliminary diagnosis of symptoms in human body. • Tri-Axial Accelerometer-Based Recognition of Daily Activities Causing
Shortness of Breath in COPD Patients

    • Abstract: Background: The 6 min walk test is widely used to measure the severity of COPD, but this test imposes an extensive burden on patients and medical staff. As an alternative to this test, the measurement of activity amount during daily activities that cause COPD patients to feel shortness of breath can be acquired using wearable devices, and the measurements between COPD patients and healthy people can be compared. Accordingly, based on machine learning, we first evaluated the accuracy of the accelerometers in recognizing such activities. Methods: Forty-six healthy participants wore tri-axial accelerometers on the wrist and hip, and performed nine activities: changing clothes, sitting, standing, lying in a supine position, brushing teeth, moving luggage, going up/down the stairs, running, and walking. Features were extracted from 10 s windows of 31 datasets and input into a machine-learning classifier model. Results: The wrist+hip classifier recognized the activities of changing clothes, standing, lying in a supine position, brushing teeth, moving luggage, going up/down the stairs, walking, and running. Sitting and other movements were not appropriately recognized. Conclusions: Sedentary movements such as sitting were difficult to recognize. However, changing clothes, standing, lying in a supine position, brushing teeth, moving luggage, going up/down the stairs, walking, and running were recognizable. These recognized activities tend to cause shortness of breath in COPD patients. Thus, the findings confirm the feasibility of an algorithm that could determine the severity of COPD by comparing activity amount for each of these activities with those of the healthy people of the same age. • Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Physical Exercise Among Elderly People
           in Enugu Metropolis, Nigerian

    • Abstract: Background: The older population is often at risk for a sedentary lifestyle, which has been related to an increased risk of all-cause mortality. Unfortunately, information on this concept is limited in sub-Saharan Africa. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of physical exercise among older in the Enugu metropolis. Methods: A physical exercise questionnaire was used to collect data from 365 older people conveniently recruited within the Enugu metropolis in this cross-sectional study. Results: Most (72.9%) of the respondent have good knowledge of the benefits of physical exercise, their overall attitude is positive (98.1%), and about the average (53.7%) of them practice regular exercise that mainly involves brisk walking (60.2%) and morning jogging (59.2%) for duration mainly 30 minutes to 1 hour (53.6%). A significant relationship was only found between knowledge of exercise and engagement in regular physical exercise (p < .001).Conclusions: There is good knowledge and positive attitudes toward exercise among older people in the Enugu metropolis. More facilities for physical activity are recommended to boast practice. Published on 2023-02-10 11:54:41

  • Foot Morphology and Running Gait Pattern between the Left and Right Limbs
           in Recreational Runners

    • Abstract: Previous studies generally selected one foot to classify participants into groups with different foot types and then analyzed the running or walking biomechanics for one limb. Such approach may have neglected the possible differences in foot morphology and gait between two limbs. This study aimed to compare the foot morphological characteristics and running kinematics of the lower extremities between the left and right limbs among a group of healthy, asymptomatic runners. Forty-four participants [20 females, 24 males; age 25.1 (6.5) years old; height 167.2 (7.0) cm; body mass 62.8 (8.1) kg] were recruited. Foot morphological characteristics were measured for both feet, and bilateral running kinematics were analyzed with 2D video analysis. No significant between-limb differences were found in the foot dimensions, hallux valgus (bunion) angle, or navicular drop (all p > 0.05). On the other hand, several kinematic variables were significantly different between the left and right limbs during running, including the peak foot eversion (p = 0.014), peak knee flexion (p = 0.002), and peak hip adduction (p < 0.001). The results indicate that runners with similar morphological characteristics between the left and right feet can display between-limb gait asymmetry during running. Researchers and practitioners should be aware of the potential between-limb asymmetry in running kinematics and foot morphology. Future studies should avoid arbitrarily analyzing one limb to represent a runner’s gait or foot morphology. Published on 2023-02-02 11:29:57

  • Avoiding God’s Waiting Room: Lessons from the Lived Experiences of Older
People who Use Digital Technology to Support Physical Activity

    • Abstract: Background: Digital technologies provide new opportunities to promote, incentivise and support physical activity as an essential component of healthy ageing, but their potential is yet to be fully realised. There is mixed information about older people’s capacity to use digital technologies to support physical activity, and about how it can benefit them. Methods: This study focuses on older people who report some success in using digital technology to support physical activity. We conducted narrative interviews with 17 purposively sampled survey respondents aged 70+ who had reported using smartphones, tablets/computers or wearable/portable digital devices to support their physical activity. We sought to identify transferable lessons from their experiences and to explain how these experiences were shaped by contextual factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was analysed inductively and deductively. Results: Interviewees perceived digital technology as a facilitator and motivator for physical activity, describing multiple benefits. Many disparaged their technical skills yet they used technology creatively to access and enhance physical activity, driven by philosophies of active living which underpinned their refusal to “sit in God’s waiting room”. Most reported navigating challenges associated with ageing in a discriminatory society, compounded by COVID-19 impacts. We identified four ‘lessons’: 1. Embrace technology, 2. Find your thing, 3. Be adaptive and 4. Resist ‘being old’.Conclusions: Leveraging trusted social and health professional relationships to model and encourage technology-supported physical activity, and strengthening the value proposition of technology for older people with older people, may encourage their use of digital technology to support physical activity. • Physiological Features of Musculoskeletal System Formation of Adolescents
Under the Influence of Directed Physical Training

    • Abstract: Introduction: The musculoskeletal system plays an essential role in the performance of various movements and positioning of the body in space. Musculoskeletal diseases are an urgent problem of modern medicine. The investigation aims to determine the main pathologies of the musculoskeletal system and propose ways to avoid them. Methods: For the analysis were used the data of 3 different research, were based on the data about 12–13 years old children. This is a retrospective study. Also was conducted anthropometric measurements, and correlation and comparison methods were used. Results: It is shown that in adolescence, the musculoskeletal system is significantly reformed. Children experience rapid growth spurts, with girls having the growth spurt before boys. In addition, skeletal structures differ in adolescents of different sexes. It is noted that pain sensations that arise in adolescence persist in a more mature age and lead to various pathologies of the musculoskeletal system. Conclusion: Modern adolescents have a tendency towards a deterioration of somatometric and somatoscopic indicators, which characterize the functional state of the spine. In case of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, rehabilitation should begin as early as possible using the appropriate therapeutic exercise techniques. Published on 2023-01-03 09:19:05

  • Physical Activity Beliefs and Behaviors during Pregnancy and their
Association with Provider Counseling among Women in the Southern United
           States

    • Abstract: Background: Physical inactivity, obesity, and chronic disease rates during pregnancy are strikingly high in the Southern United States. The present study examined sociodemographic factors related to the beliefs and behaviors of women in the South regarding physical activity (PA) during pregnancy and whether women’s beliefs and behaviors during pregnancy were associated with provider counseling. Methods: A sample of 292 women in the South completed an online survey. Participants provided sociodemographic data and recalled health beliefs and PA from their recent pregnancy. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were used to describe and assess relationships between variables. Linear regressions examined the association between women’s beliefs and behaviors during pregnancy and provider counseling while controlling for sociodemographic factors. Results: There was large agreement among the sample. Feeling tired and lacking motivation were the main barriers to PA, and improved health was the primary benefit. Participants felt most susceptible to anxiety and depression. Providers were the leading source of support for PA, although provider counseling was not significantly correlated with increased PA. Participants engaged primarily in light household and caregiving activities. Sociodemographic factors had a stronger association with beliefs and behaviors than provider counseling. Conclusion: Participants viewed PA as beneficial; however, they had specific barriers to exercise during pregnancy and did not perceive themselves as susceptible to common health conditions. Participants looked to providers as their primary support for PA, although provider counseling appears ineffective. Providers should encourage patients to be active using established counseling techniques such as motivational interviewing to support PA. Published on 2022-12-30 10:01:45

  • Effects of Fatigue in Lower Back Muscles on Basketball Jump Shots and
           Landings

    • Abstract: Introduction: The aim of this study was to explore effects of fatigue in lower back muscles on the performance of countermovement jumps (CMJ), jump shots (JS) and landing impact. Methods: Twelve male healthy collegiate basketball players (age: 22.8 ± 2.7 yrs, stature: 178.0 ± 5.1 cm, body mass: 74.5 ± 6.8 kg) volunteered to participate in this study. Data were collected utilizing a 3D motion analysis system, force plate, and surface electromyography. Field-goal percentage, the lowest point of the center of mass (CoM), the angles of joints during taking off phase and landing, and the electromyography parameters of the rectus femoris, erector spinae lumbalis, and of the lower limbs when performing CMJ and JS were recorded. Lower back muscle fatigue intervention was introduced and followed by a post-test to explore the effects of fatigue in the lower back muscles. Statistical analysis was performed using paired-samples t-test.Results: After lower back muscle fatigue, field-goal percentages dropped, and lowest point of CoM was increased during JS. Ankle plantar flexion of the hopping leg during CMJ and JS increased, and their knee flexion angles of the hopping leg were reduced when landing. CMJ and JS changed the contribution ratio of both legs after low back fatigue. Conclusions: Temporary low back muscles fatigue decreased the athletes’ performance and causes a change in landing strategy. • The Effect of Application of Asymmetry Evaluation in Competitive Sports: A
           Systematic Review

    • Abstract: It has been widely asserted that the two side human body asymmetries are detrimental to the health and performance alike of athletes in training and competition. The current systematic review aims to promote a more refined understanding of bilateral asymmetry in competitive sports and explore the application of asymmetric assessment to performance, injury and rehabilitation. A systematic review of the articles was undertaken using the Web OF Science, ScienceDirect and PubMed databases in May 2022, retrieving a total of 386 studies published in all years. The study quality scoring system developed was used by two evaluators to assess the grading article quality. Twenty-two articles fulfilled our eligibility criteria. The average quality assessment rate for selected articles in this systematic review is 94.4 ± 6.3% (from 0.78 to 1.00). Articles investigated the effect of the application of asymmetry evaluation in one of the following sports types: gait related sports, upper limb sports, ball sports and multifarious sports. Asymmetry has a positive effect on physical performance in athletes engaged in upper limb movements, but it may lead to potential risk of injures in gait-related sports. When examining bilateral asymmetries among athletes in multifarious sports, the studies were primarily used to investigate the relationship between injury rehabilitation and return-to sport, with mixed findings. Further research needs to determine the possible injury-inducing threshold of asymmetry in multifarious sports and the detailed relationship between bilateral asymmetry and sports performance.
