  • Lehren und Lernen mit und über Medien im Sportunterricht

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

  • Decoding the complexities of transitions in football: a comprehensive
           narrative review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Background Transitions in football are pivotal moments in the game, carrying significant tactical and strategic implications. Despite the lack of a consensus on the exact definition and duration of transitions, their importance is evident in the analysis of football matches. Clear connections exist between performance indicators, team play styles, and specific game moments. The evolution of game analysis, facilitated by technology employing spatial, optical, and motion sensors, has heightened the recognition of transition actions. Methods This narrative review synthesizes perspectives on transitions from various authors and investigates how these perspectives have evolved over time. By utilizing real-time analysis through advanced technology, the review aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of transitions in football. Results Counterattacks are identified as a key outcome emerging from transitions, affirming existing literature suggesting that each transition prompts a response from the opposing team. The review underscores the need to objectively define the dichotomy of transitions in terms of the moment of play and style of play, mitigating overlap and confusion. Conclusion Transitions are complex phenomena occurring independently of ball possession. Understanding their classification, determinants, and outcomes is crucial for optimizing team performance. By shedding light on the multifaceted nature of transitions, this review contributes to a more nuanced comprehension of this critical aspect of football strategy.

  • Frequency and performance relevance of parent-coaches in
           competition-oriented sports

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The occurrence of children being coached by their parents in the world of sport is a well-known phenomenon, but one that remains insufficiently researched. It is rather unclear how common this is and there are very different assessments of whether it is more of an advantage or a disadvantage to be trained by one’s own parents. In the first study, we assess the frequency of occurrence of parent-coaches as well as the duration of these collaborations and their developmental location in the lives of the offspring. Results from a cross-sport survey and a soccer-specific survey indicate that a notable proportion of performance-oriented male and female senior athletes (19 and 34%, respectively) have been coached by their own parents at some point (χ2 [1, N = 291] = 7.770, p = 0.005, V = 0.163). In the second study, we address the question of the relevance of parent-coaches to athletic achievement. In this regard, the hypothesis that the proportion of male soccer players who were coached by their parents is larger in higher-ranking amateur leagues (38%) than in lower-ranking leagues (28 and 14%) was empirically confirmed (χ2 [2, N = 331] = 11.950, p = 0.003, V = 0.190). Thus, it can be assumed that about one fifth of all performance-oriented senior athletes had been coached by their own parents for some time. Moreover, the fact of having been trained by one’s own parents can in principle be regarded as a conducive condition for the athletic development of adolescents.

  • Gemeinsinn in Praktiken des olympischen Spitzensports

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

  • Musculoskeletal health in esport: a cross-sectional comparison of
musculoskeletal pain among young Danish esports players and handball
           players

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Purpose There is a continuous debate regarding musculoskeletal (MSK) pain prevalence and training volume among amateur esports players. Previous findings suggest that MSK pain may limit esports participation in this group; however, these results have yet to be replicated in a similar population. It also remains to be investigated whether MSK pain is more prevalent in esports compared to other activities, such as handball. The objectives were (1) to compare MSK pain prevalence among amateur esports players and another group of sports-active amateur players and (2) to investigate whether MSK pain would impact training volume in the two groups. Methods Eligible players for this cross-sectional study had to engage in either structured esports or handball and be 15–25 years of age to participate. Demographic data, self-reported MSK pain prevalence, training volume, sleep patterns, physical activity level, and activity-limiting pain and burnout were obtained through online questionnaires. Results In total, 76 esports players and 175 handball players were included. Overall, 48% of esports players and 80% of handball players experienced MSK pain. The odds of experiencing MSK pain were significantly lower in esports compared to handball (OR: 0.24, 95% CI 0.13–0.43, chi-square p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in training volume between players with or without MSK pain in either group. Esports players had significantly higher training volume (additional 13 h/week, p < 0.001) compared to handball players. Conclusion These findings indicate that esports players are not at increased odds of experiencing MSK pain compared to handball players despite significant differences in training volume.

  • Sportverbände als Meta-Organisationen

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

  • That was a foul! How viewing angles, viewing distances, and visualization
           methods influence football referees’ decision-making

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract A football referee must choose the right position on the field in order to perceive a foul accurately. In previous research, decision-making for foul calls was compared across different situations within a match or even across different matches, which questions the comparability of decisions that often depend on the situational context. In this study, we experimentally controlled this situational context to investigate the effect of viewing distance and viewing angle on referees’ decision-making. We recreated real-life decision-making situations using markerless tracking devices and virtual reality (VR) animation processes to render first-person situations. We compared the decision-making accuracy of ten experienced football referees when judging situations from three different viewing angles and distances. Furthermore, we compared their decision-making accuracy in VR scenes with accuracy when viewing the same scenes from a bird’s eye and slow-motion perspective, i.e., with the perspectives used in official referee training. We found that decision accuracy is not affected by viewing angles and distances, but that the referee’s decision certainty is lower when viewing the foul situation from a greater distance. The visualization of the situations had an impact on the referee’s decision-making but only for detecting a simulation (i.e., a player acts like they have been fouled). Slow-motion scenes led to higher decision-making accuracy than VR scenes. Our study suggests a way to recreate VR situations for experimental studies, allowing researchers to control the context of each situation. Our findings help to disentangle the mixed findings of previous studies on distance and viewing angle effects on decision accuracies. Finally, we propose potential avenues to improve VR animation processes in future studies.

  • A problem to tackle: soccer players’ awareness of microplastic infill
in soccer fields predicts support for pro-environmental interventions

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract On behalf of the European Commission, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published a restriction proposal in early 2019 to minimize the EU-wide placement of intentionally added microplastics in products (ECHA, 2019). Soccer fields in the sense of artificial turf systems (ATS) and their infill are included in this definition and are suspected to be the fourth largest source of microplastic emissions. In the present study, we queried a sample of 191 soccer players regarding their awareness of the problem of synthetic infill discharge from ATS into the environment and whether they are aware of its environmental consequences. In addition, we investigated whether the soccer players expressed a willingness to implement interventions against the discharge of microplastic granules. Results suggest a moderate (rather than high or low) level of problem awareness among soccer players. In particular, issue-specific problem awareness was significantly related to the willingness to implement an intervention measure, being its strongest predictor. Our results further suggest that in order to optimize the awareness and legitimation of intervention measures among club members, more information (i.e., environmental knowledge) should be provided. The present work makes a first important research contribution to the awareness analysis regarding microplastic granulate from ATS.

  • Climate change: the next game changer for sport and exercise psychology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract According to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change experts, recent changes across the climate system are unprecedented, and the next decades are the most decisive in human history to drastically reduce global annual greenhouse gas emissions. This text argues that sport and exercise psychology, as a scientific discipline, needs to address anthropogenic climate change by helping athletes, sport students, psychologists, coaches, physical educators, youth, sport communities and stakeholders and all populations concerned by our field to adopt adaptation and mitigation behaviors and trigger social changes in their respective communities. We briefly present the bidirectional associations between physical activity, sport and climate change. Then, we highlight three key points about climate change: its effects on health, equity issues and behaviors change in line with currently needed climate efforts. Furthermore, we suggest a series of research questions for physical activity and sport psychology domains. Finally, we conclude by presenting a call to action.

  • Gender differences in pro-environmental nutrition behavior among football
           fans

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Concerns about consequences of everyday nutrition have led to a gender gap in pro-environmental nutrition (PEN), implying that women decide more often to limit their meat consumption than men. For sport and football managers who increasingly deal with environmental sustainability while aiming to increase female audiences, the question arises of whether the gender gap in PEN also applies to football fans. Based on socialization theory, the safety-concerns hypothesis, ecofeminism, and a conceptual model on prosocial behavior, this study analyzed gender differences in environmental consciousness (EC) and everyday PEN and examined how gender moderates the impact of these two factors on the interest in vegan food in football stadiums. An online survey (n = 1605) of fans of a German Football League club was conducted to assess fans’ interest in the offer of a vegan sausage or burger. Empirical findings confirm the gender gap in EC. Women are significantly more likely to adopt PEN everyday if they have a high EC. Furthermore, women are significantly more likely to eat often/always a vegetarian diet everyday than men. Finally, women have a significantly higher interest in the offer of vegan food in the football stadium than men, irrespective of the EC level. Although we confirm the gender gap in EC and everyday PEN, sport managers learn from our findings that the growing female audience at football games is generally more interested in the availability of vegan food at the stadium than men are, irrespective of their EC or PEN in everyday life.

  • Conceptualizing sustainable participation in the context of German
           football supporters

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Institutionalized supporter participation is a traditional part of German professional football clubs. Due to commercialization, some challenging issues have arisen in recent years regarding supporter participation. To develop new approaches for improving participation, the study uses a social sustainability perspective, illustrating that social sustainability elements help to develop and structure the potential for improvement of participation in German professional football. By identifying and discussing links between social sustainability and institutionalized supporter participation, we contribute to the conceptualization of sustainable participation. Our research supports the creation of an inclusive and sustainable fan community where fans can actively participate in decisions and actions that affect their current and future fandom environment. Based on the social sustainability principles of health, influence, competence, impartiality, and meaning-making, we compile the following characteristics of sustainable participation: social well-being oriented participation, direct influence, regular voting rights, representative participation, appealable resolutions, information-based participation, barrier-free participation, democratic voting, established constitutions, and encouraged participation. This conceptualization provides approaches and foundations for future investigations regarding participation research in football and practical implications for member associations, association members, league organizers, and other stakeholders to establish and improve institutionalized participation.

  • Sport and climate change—how will climate change affect sport'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Climate change will have complex consequences for the environment, society, economy and people’s health. The issue of climate change has received comparatively little attention to date in the fields of sports science. Thus, sport-related health risks caused by climate change are discussed and summarized in a conceptual model presented here for the first time. Climate change is associated with the following increases of health-related risks for athletes in particular: Direct consequences caused by extreme temperature and other extreme weather events (e.g. increasing risks due to heatwaves, thunderstorms, floods, lightning, ultraviolet radiation) and indirect consequences as a result of climate-induced changes to our ecosystem (e.g. due to increased air pollution by ozone, higher exposures to allergens, increasing risks of infection by viruses and bacteria and the associated vectors and reservoir organisms). Each aspect is supplemented with advice on the prevention of health hazards. Not only individual athletes but also sports organizations and local clubs will have to respond to the changes in our climate, so that they can appropriately protect both athletes and spectators and ensure a plannable continuation of the sport in the future.

  • The role of parental environmental self-identity in active travel behavior
           within parent–adolescent dyads

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Active travel in everyday life offers the opportunity to increase physical activity (PA), supports young people in their development, and is more sustainable than motorized travel. The environmental awareness of young people can be influenced by parents and can lead them to choose mainly active travel modes. Since parents can have a strong impact on the behavioral patterns of adolescents, it is important to investigate how parental decisions are linked to children’s actions. The aim of the current study is to assess the relationship between parental environmental self-identity, referring to parents’ own attitudes towards their environmentally friendly behavior, and active travel behavior in adolescents as well as parents’ own travel behavior. The present research is based on the German ARRIVE (Active tRavel behavioR in the famIly enVironmEnt) study. The sample consists of 517 parent–adolescent dyads. Parents and adolescents completed an online questionnaire containing questions on their sociodemographic backgrounds and travel behavior to four different destinations, and the parents additionally answered questions on their environmental self-identity. To identify differences in environmental self-identity between sex/gender, residential setting, and education level, a one-way analysis of variance was conducted. Binary logistic regressions were used to investigate associations between parental environmental self-identity and parental travel mode as well as their adolescents’ travel mode. There were positive relationships between parental environmental self-identity and adolescents’ use of active travel modes for the way to leisure activities, to school, and to friends. Odds ratios (OR) for these associations indicated low effect sizes (OR = 1.240–1.616). Among parents, all associations revealed statistical significance with low (OR for friends/relatives = 1.728) to medium (OR to shopping = 2.028) effect sizes. Our results suggest that adolescents’ active travel routines seem to be related to parental attitudes.

  • Maintaining health in daily life—is active travel the solution'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Physical inactivity is a global public health challenge. At the same time, the societal transformation toward a sustainable and active lifestyle can be observed. Active travel (AT) is one physical activity (PA) domain and combines healthy and sustainable daily behavior. However, it is still unclear whether assumed associations between AT and health are resilient for objective and subjective health outcomes. Since published research on AT has been growing during the last decade, this scoping review aimed to update and summarize the existing evidence. Therefore, a scoping review was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library, following PRISMA guidelines. In all, 35 papers including 4,857,918 individuals (age range: 18–93 years old) were included. AT is strongly associated with health dimensions with a great body of knowledge showing strong associations between AT and reduced risks for noncommunicable diseases (NCD), especially in comparison to non-AT. Thus, AT can play an important role to prevent the increasing prevalence of NCD. There is a limited amount of research available on health-promoting factors and subjective health. Extracted studies suggest positive connections with AT. Mostly, cycling as a form of AT seems to have a more significant positive association with health compared to walking. Longitudinal studies further support and reinforce these findings.
