  • Pedal Quadrant-Specific Strength and Conditioning Considerations for
           Endurance Cyclists

      Abstract: imageThe performance-enhancing effects of strength training on cycling are well documented with findings from research, demonstrating resistance training with heavy loads conducted 2–3 times per week for at least 8 weeks can improve power output (maximal and submaximal), extend time to exhaustion, and reduce completion time for set distances, while not adding to the total body mass. Despite the evident benefits of strength training, there remains a lack of consensus regarding the most effective exercises to enhance endurance cycling. This uncertainty is evident when considering movement-specific exercises to enhance dynamic transfer to cycling. A range of lower-limb exercises involving hip, knee, and ankle flexion and extension seems to enhance cycling performance more so than static or single-joint exercises. These improvements may be attributed to enhanced coordination and improved pedaling technique. This study presents 5 strength training exercises designed to target cycling pedaling quadrants and replicate the unilateral opposing nature of cycling (simultaneous flexion and extension of the legs) to enhance transfer from weight room-based strength training to the bike. These exercises are presented in example programs alongside established “traditional” exercises that may be used to guide the development of strength training for cyclists.

  • The Effects of Psyching-Up on Maximal Force Production: A Systematic
           Review

      Abstract: imageA comprehensive examination of psyching-up strategies before maximal force production is imperative to examine the efficacy of psyching-up, identify beneficial strategies for practitioners, and direct future investigations. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the efficacy of psyching-up strategies on maximal force production. The systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search was conducted in SPORTDiscus, PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Studies were included if they used an experimental design, sampled adults, the independent variable included a psyching-up strategy that matched the working definition, and measured maximal force production measure. Twenty-seven independent studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. Collectively, 65% of the trials found that psyching-up facilitates maximal force production. Free-choice psyching-up, motivational self-talk, PETTLEP imagery, and prescribed preparatory arousal consistently enhanced performance. There was also evidence that disparity in the results may be because of the competitive experience of the participants and the type of control condition. The findings suggest that free-choice psyching-up, motivational self-talk, PETTLEP imagery, and prescribed preparatory arousal may enhance maximal force production. Future research should recruit experienced athletes to identify and test the efficacy of strategies used by applied practitioners.

  • A Brief Review of the Efficacy in Artificial Intelligence and
           Chatbot-Generated Personalized Fitness Regimens

      Abstract: imageArtificial intelligence (AI) and chatbot technologies have rapidly emerged with promising applications in public health, including developing personal lifestyles and exercise routines. This article examines the effectiveness of AI-based chatbot platforms to generate personalized exercise regimens. Chatbots are freely accessible to users with Internet access and may be more cost-effective than a personal trainer. This review highlights multiple examples of AI being used to offer fitness advice, supplement athletic coaching, and create everyday exercise routines. The results of these studies demonstrate a positive outlook on using AI for strength and conditioning applications, for personal and professional use. Despite having the potential to replace personal fitness trainers for everyday users and athletes alike, more extensive research should be performed using AI combined with physicians, personal trainers, and nutritionists to determine areas where AI can be further optimized. More research focusing on the effectiveness of AI-generated routines for the everyday user may further validate the potential for chatbot-mediated exercise. This brief review aims to evaluate the efficacy of AI-generated personalized fitness regimens, emphasizing physical fitness, athletic performance, and overall physical and mental well-being.   • Kinetic and Kinematic Aspects of the Vertical Jump Related to
           Overreaching: A Systematic Review

      Abstract: imageExtended overreaching without recovery carries risks of nonfunctional overreaching and overtraining. Coaches mitigate these risks by screening for overreaching, often using jump testing; however, many are uncertain about which jump variables to measure. A systematic review was conducted to identify jumping kinetic and kinematic variables associated with heightened training stress. Manuscripts were included if they monitored overreaching in healthy, adult athletes at National Level or above using an unloaded vertical jump test; and excluded if they did not report measured kinetic/kinematic variables, did not include sufficient data to calculate effect sizes (ES) and confidence intervals (95% CI) or were not available in English. Fourteen manuscripts met inclusion/exclusion criteria. Most studies had a low (71.4%) or moderate (21.4%) risk of bias. Twenty-nine unique outcome measures were reported with 11 reported in multiple studies. The most reported measures were the ratio of flight time to contraction time (15 ES reported), jump height (JH, 12 ES), mean power (7 ES), peak power (PP, 7 ES), mean velocity (5 ES), and peak force (PF, 5 ES). PP, PF, and JH demonstrated the most consistent negative alterations. Coaches should consider metrics that include changes in jump strategy alongside JH in jump screening.

  • Testing Limb Symmetry and Asymmetry After Anterior Cruciate Ligament
           Injury: 4 Considerations to Increase Its Utility

      Abstract: imageAnterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury occurs frequently in sport and surgical reconstruction is often recommended to restore knee joint stability. To guide rehabilitation and determine return to sport readiness, practitioners have used a long-standing practice of calculating the limb symmetry index (LSI) in various functional, biomechanical, and strength tests to compare the injured limb with the noninjured contralateral limb. However, the evidence in support of the LSI calculation to quantify rehabilitation status and return to sport readiness is mixed. We synthesize scientific literature on the LSI calculation and discuss potential reasons for the mixed evidence and limitations. We present 4 considerations to improve the utility of the LSI calculation including (a): the importance of establishing the right benchmark of recovery such as the preinjury contralateral limb or a sport-specific noninjured control benchmark; (b) strategies to manage the high variation in movement asymmetry calculations and the importance of quantifying the intrasubject variability for the component parts of the LSI; (c) the evidence for assessing the movement strategy alongside performance when using the LSI; and (d) how a sport-specific envelope of function can be used to inform post-ACL injury testing that incorporates the LSI.

  • A Discussion of Exercise Programs Performed During Firefighter Training
           Academies

      Abstract: imageFirefighting is a physically demanding occupation that requires individuals to possess considerably high levels of muscular endurance, strength, power, and aerobic fitness. Under most circumstances, a firefighter's career begins with a training academy during which they learn essential job tasks (e.g., victim rescue) while performing a variety of exercise programs. Based on the current literature, several forms of resistance, aerobic, circuit, concurrent, and functional training positively affect the physical fitness and occupational performance of firefighter recruits. Because many fire departments have limited gym access, it is most practical for training academies to adopt exercise programs that can be completed with their academy's specific equipment and facility confines. Luckily, the research discussed within this paper demonstrates that effective training can be performed with minimal and maximal facility/equipment access. Regarding future studies, it would be interesting for researchers to compare the effects of minimal-equipment and maximal-equipment programs and apply training plans that combine these 2 extremes. Moreover, to accommodate the execution and learning of occupational tasks, researchers should explore periodizing training plans around the current physical demands of the academy while applying minimum effective training doses.

  • Practical Guidance to Optimize Postmatch Recovery in Elite Male and Female
           Soccer: A Review

      Abstract: imageSeveral recovery methods have been proposed to optimize postmatch recovery in elite soccer. However, practical guidance for the implementation of recovery methods that somehow confer benefits on the recovery process immediately postmatch (MD), 1 day postmatch (MD + 1), and 2 days postmatch (MD + 2) is lacking. This article aimed to review the existing literature and provide a practical guide for sports scientists, coaches, clinicians, and players concerning implementing the most-used recovery methods after male and female soccer matches. For this purpose, we first presented a general 5-level recovery model that divides the recovery methods according to their relevance in recovery, based on their effectiveness in recovery, frequency of use, and reported detrimental effects. In addition, practical recommendations were provided for implementing each recovery method following two days post-match according to the recovery of various parameters (i.e., physical, physiologic, and perceptual) and physiologic and psychosocial assumptions. It was concluded that the application of recovery methods should be prioritized, periodized, and individualized over the recovery period postmatch. In addition, some recovery methods with limited effectiveness in postmatch recovery should be recommended based on physiologic assumptions and potential psychosocial benefits.

  • Types and Contributors to Occupational Fatigue

      Abstract: imageAlthough fatigue is commonly experienced in many highly demanding occupations (e.g., military, first responders, etc.), it is poorly defined. Fatigue can strongly affect occupational performance by negatively influencing the ability to interact with the world by altering the capacity to think, move, feel, see, and speak. The first step in fatigue risk management strategies is to establish a context. The context of this narrative review is to specifically describe and discuss the 6 overarching types of occupational fatigue: cognitive, physical, burnout, emotional, visual, and vocal fatigue, and how each affects varying occupations. Furthermore, fatigue type can be influenced by several intrinsic factors, such as sleep deprivation, circadian alignment, ultradian process, sleep homeostasis, and health factors. Similarly, extrinsic factors influence fatigue, such as workload, shift work, and environmental issues. Understanding the types and contributors to occupational fatigue may help clarify the context of occupational fatigue and serve to guide future occupational fatigue management.

  • The Use of Global Positioning Systems Devices to Measure Maximum Velocity
           in Field-Based Team Sport Athletes: A Narrative Review

      Abstract: imageThe maximum velocity achieved during sprinting is a crucial aspect in various sports. Therefore, practitioners use various devices, such as laser or radar guns, timing gates (TG), and global positioning systems (GPS), to assess sprint performance. Although high-speed cameras are considered the most accurate equipment for assessing maximum velocity (Vmax), TG are more commonly used because of their practicality and affordability. Recently, GPS technology has gained attention from the sport science community, primarily because of its applied characteristics, enabling “in situ” data exploration. However, there is currently no consensus on the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of GPS in field-based team sports not only for measuring Vmax but also for tracking potential changes in sprint performance. We thoroughly examined the existing literature on the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of GPS technology for measuring Vmax, with a specific emphasis on its application in team sports. Furthermore, we offer a comprehensive discussion on the capability of these devices to assess potential variations in Vmax. By synthesizing current research findings, this narrative review sheds light on the strengths and limitations of GPS devices for assessing Vmax in field-based team sport athletes.

  • Effect of Using Different Intensities in Resistance Training for Muscle
           Hypertrophy Gains—A Narrative Review

      Abstract: imageResistance training or strength training has become one of the most popular forms of exercise, because it is the only method capable of improving physical fitness and increasing muscle mass simultaneously. Among the variables of training, the relationship between intensity and volume has been extensively addressed to enhance exercise-induced muscular hypertrophy. For many, mechanical stress is seen as a factor of greater relevance and, because high loads promote greater mechanical tension and high intensities are traditionally used to increase muscle mass. However, evidence has shown greater safety and similar results through training based on lower intensities and increased training volume. Thus, this narrative review aimed to search the current literature for evidence on using different training loads to promote muscle hypertrophy. An extensive nonsystematic literature review was conducted in the PubMed, Google Scholar and Scielo databases. It was possible to conclude that the use of high and low intensity promotes similar results in muscle hypertrophy in all groups, leading to the belief that there is greater safety and adherence to the use of lower intensities compared with close effort to concentric failure.

  • Blood Flow Restriction Walking for Older Adults: A Brief Review

      Abstract: imageWalking is a low-impact form of physical activity feasible, acceptable, and safe for load-compromised individuals, such as older adults. Options available to increase the potency of this exercise to promote training adaptations are generally limited to manipulation of speed, gradient, and duration. However, emerging studies have suggested that blood flow restriction (BFR) combined with walking is a method that can accentuate training-induced adaptations compared with walking alone. This narrative review aimed to examine the effectiveness and safety of BFR walking in older adults according to the existing literature. Of the limited evidence available on this topic, it appears that BFR walking compared with walking alone can induce significant increases in muscular hypertrophy and strength. Therefore, implementing BFR walking may be a feasible and safe option for older adults to enhance the effectiveness of their walking interventions, at least from a musculoskeletal perspective.

  • High-Performance Programs for First Responders: Considerations and
           Potential Benefits of Implementation

      Abstract: imageIn recent years, tactical personnel, especially within the military, have integrated sports science–related practices into their training. This effort has been less pronounced with first responders (police, firefighters, emergency services), despite the structured academy training typically completed by recruits, challenging job tasks and long-term health, fitness, and wellness concerns. One example of how sports science practices could be applied for first responders is through high-performance programs. High-performance programs are commonplace within elite sport and can help set roadmaps for success. Numerous factors contribute to an effective program, much of which relates to the resources provided to personnel. This can include a multidisciplinary team (e.g., strength and conditioning coaches, athletic trainers/medical staff, psychologists, nutritionists, researchers) and appropriate resources (e.g., gyms, facilities, testing and training equipment). This review will discuss whether high-performance programs, or at least components of these programs, could be adopted in first-responder populations. The authors will discuss literature to demonstrate how and why high-performance programs could be implemented for first responders and whether these programs are aspirational, attainable, or objectionable. Finally, the authors will provide actionable high-performance program-related information for the strength and conditioning coach and tactical scientist working with first responders.
