  • Maneuvering simulations of twin-propeller and twin-rudder ship in shallow
           water using equivalent single rudder model

      Abstract: An equivalent single rudder (ESR) model is presented for maneuvering simulations of twin-propeller and twin-rudder ships within the framework of the maneuvering modeling group (MMG) method Yasukawa (J Marine Sci Technol 20:37–52, 2015). It eliminates the complexity of a mathematical model by treating a port and starboard rudders as a single rudder located at the center of the ship hull. Specifically, an expression for the rudder force is presented using the ESR model. As examples, the results of captive model tests for a twin-screw ferry in deep and shallow water and the analysis results are presented, and maneuvering simulations are conducted using the hydrodynamic force coefficients obtained from the analysis. The simulation results of turning and zig–zag maneuvers agree with the results of free-running model tests, in regard to practical application. The maneuvering simulation method using the ESR model is validated for twin-propeller and twin-rudder ships in deep and shallow water.

  • Adaptive robust control of marine vehicles with periodic disturbance
           compensation: an observer-based output feedback approach

      Abstract: This work concentrates on output feedback trajectory tracking control of marine vehicles with dynamical uncertainties. The system under consideration, due to the natural response of oceanic waves, is also subject to periodic external disturbances. The output feedback structure of the proposed controller algorithm is established via a novel nonlinear model-free observer in conjunction with a Fourier series expansion-based periodic disturbance estimator. Lyapunov-based arguments have been utilized to prove the stability of the closed loop system and the convergence of tracking and unmeasured state observation errors under the closed loop operation. Performance demonstration and viability of the proposed method are realized via comparative numerical simulations.

  • Numerical calculation of six degree of freedom floating motion of
           submarine with flow holes

      Abstract: This study developed a numerical prediction method for the emergency ascent of a submarine with flow holes in calm water based on the RANS method, and utilizing sliding and overlapping grids, 6-DOF and DFBI models, and considering interactions between internal and external domains. The proposed approach was verified using numerical simulations, where it was found that the numerical calculation errors were within 10% compared to model submarine ascent test results. The paper then explored further numerically the influence of different positive buoyancies, longitudinal and vertical positions of the center of gravity, and diving depths on the ascent motion of the submarine. The results showed that the greater the positive buoyancy, the shorter the time for the submarine to ascend, but the submarine will be more susceptible to disturbances from the water surface. The more backward the longitudinal position of center of gravity relative to the longitudinal position of center of buoyancy, the greater the submarine head-up during floating, and as a result, the closer to vertical the posture of the submarine when it emerged from underwater, and the greater the peak trim angle. Conversely, when the longitudinal position of the center of gravity shifted forward, the submarine was prone to dangerous head-downs during ascent. The greater the absolute value of the height of the center of gravity, the greater the initial stability of the submarine, and the smaller the effects of water disturbances and damping. In such cases, the heel and trim angles of the submarine will be smaller after it emerges. For the submarine to ascend, the positive buoyancy should take an appropriate value. Consequently, when the longitudinal position of the center of gravity is near the position of the center of buoyancy, the smaller the height of the center of gravity and the diving depth, which is beneficial for the submarine ascent. In conclusion, the proposed numerical method and reported research findings may help to understand the ascent of real submarines.

  • Application of composite energy storage device in ship electric propulsion
           system

      Abstract: Abstract Aiming at the problem of economy and reliability caused by the frequent disturbance of the load power in the ship electric propulsion system, a composite energy device based on ultracapacitor and accumulator was proposed. Taking work load changes of a drag suction dredger for example, combine adaptive inertial weight particle swarm optimization and fitness dispersion sorting to perform multi-objective optimization con figuration for the capacity of composite energy. In this paper, through the MATLAB simulation, optimization of capacity is calculated and charge-discharge control strategy of composite energy is analyzed. The results showed that composite energy storage device can effectively improve economy and stability of ship electric propulsion system.

  • Identification of the geometric design parameters of propeller blades from
           3D scanning

      Abstract: Abstract This paper presents a new method for the identification of geometric design parameters of ISO 484 class propeller blades from scanned point cloud data. The method can be used for tolerance inspection and in-line measurement of manufactured blades, and for wear assessment and reverse engineering of propellers in service. The geometry of the propeller blades is specified by a set of blade sections stacked radially on concentric cylindrical surfaces. For each of these sections, the chord line and mean camber line is determined, and geometric design parameters such as the pitch, skew, chord length, camber, and thickness distributions are identified. The proposed method is a complete procedure for identifying the design parameters of marine propeller blades from point cloud data, and includes a novel method for the precise identification of the mean camber line based on Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulation. The paper includes validation of the proposed method in experiments where reverse engineering is applied to a propeller blade of the KVLCC2 propeller, and in 3D scanning of a large, high-skew thruster blade where the results were compared to CMM measurements.

  • Design of bidirectional power converters coupled with coils for wireless
           charging of AUV docking systems

      Abstract: Abstract The docking station is usually deployed at seafloor as a charging node to enhance the endurance of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, for deep-sea observation requirements, it is nearly unaffordable to deploy extremely long cables to provide power for docking stations. Therefore, this paper proposes a possible power-supply solution by developing an underwater bidirectional wireless power transmission (UBWPT) system. To improve the efficiency of the UBWPT system in underwater scenarios, the power converters coupled with coils is designed by analyzing the eddy current loss and parasitic jumper capacitor in seawater. Additionally, two independent controllers are developed for the transmitting and receiving converters to achieve power flow control underwater. The effectiveness of the bidirectional power converters is verified by developing a 51-W charging prototype system, which improves the system efficiency by 3% in simulated seawater.

  • Influence of an active T-foil on motions and passenger comfort of a large
           high-speed wave-piercing catamaran based on sea trials

      Abstract: Abstract T-foil and stern tabs were installed on a wave-piercing catamaran (Incat Tasmania Hull 061) to improve ship motions and passenger comfort. More than 40 total effective hours of sea trials were conducted by the US Navy in 2004, encountering sea states 4–5 in the Atlantic Ocean near the United Kingdom. In this paper the influence of a ride-control system (RCS) on the heave and pitch response amplitude operator (RAO) of the full-scale high-speed catamaran was investigated using the sea trial data. The reduction in motion sickness incidence (MSI) was estimated in order to examine the effectiveness of the RCS in improving passenger comfort. With the existing control algorithm, the vertical accelerations were found to be best controlled by the active T-foil working together with the active stern tabs, while the pitch RAO was mainly mitigated by deploying only the stern tabs. About a 23% reduction was observed in the peak heave RAO with deployment of an active T-foil. The MSI can be reduced by up to 23% with respect to the cases with stern tabs only, depending on the encountered wave conditions, based on ISO recommendation for MSI calculation of a 2-h seaway passage.

  • Dynamic responses of TLP considering coupled transverse and axial effect
           of tether under second-order wave and freak wave

      Abstract: Abstract The objective of this paper is to analyze the dynamic responses of Tension Leg Platform (TLP). Under the combined action of waves and currents, a tether model considering the coupled effects of transverse and axial responses is established. The finite difference method is used in the numerical algorithm of the tether vibration model. Three simulations are performed, including a first-order irregular wave, a second-order wave, and a freak wave impact against the platform. The dynamic response characteristics of the tension leg platform under the action of freak waves are calculated by using the superposition model to generate the time history of freak waves. The numerical simulation results show that the platform motions are significantly affected by the freak waves, especially in the focusing location. And the effects of second-order wave force and freak wave force on the platform responses, horizontal offset, and vertical subsidence are analyzed.

  • Improved stochastic averaging method using Hamiltonian for parametric
           rolling in irregular longitudinal waves

      Abstract: Abstract Using the stochastic averaging method, the probability density function (PDF) of roll motion for parametric rolling in irregular waves is obtained. In this paper, the stochastic averaging method using Hamiltonian proposed by Dostal is used, and the PDF of roll amplitude and Hamiltonian are derived from the equations of roll motion. In addition, the asymptotic behavior of PDF is investigated to improve the accuracy of the calculation. Furthermore, to improve the applicability of this method, the simulation-based stochastic method is proposed. Compared to the results of the stochastic averaging method proposed by Roberts and Dostal, the results using this improved method show a good agreement. The results are examined for parametric excitation using white noise as well as colored noise. Moreover, the relationship between the scale parameter and the PDF is theoretically analyzed and formulated.

      Abstract: Abstract The study of several problems to determine the width of the coastal area of navigation for the vessel and the determination of the parameters of the vessel, capable of moving against the wave in the coastal area, was proposed in this article. A method was developed based on solving an inequality that includes the kinetic energy of a ship with added masses of water and wave energy. A formula and a graph have been proposed to help assess the decrease in the ship’s speed when moving on the oncoming wave. The calculations take into account the proposals of the Classification Societies regarding the design acceleration for the vessel. Several international documents and Rules of Classification Societies (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Germanischer Lloyd, Manila Amendments to the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Code, Shipping Register of Ukraine and other) were considered, regarding the definition of the coastal navigation area. To solve the problems, the Energy Wave Criterion (EWC), statistical methods, research data in several towing tanks and information on the time of human survival in water were used.

  • A crack propagation simulation for a steel CHS T-joint employing an
           advanced shell-solid finite element modeling

      Abstract: Abstract An efficient crack propagation (CP) simulation system based on a shell-solid finite element (FE) modeling is newly established. Three-dimensional (3D) CP simulation for a curvilinearly propagating surface crack in a steel circular hollow section (CHS) T-joint is carried out. Entire model is generated by a shell FEs, and cracked welded part is generated by a solid FEs. They are connected with a rigid body element (RBE). Stress intensity factors (SIFs) are computed for analyzing CP rate and CP direction of the crack employing the virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) with quadratic tetrahedral FEs. When the crack extends, only solid model is regenerated. To examine the effectiveness of the modeling, fatigue testing and simplified CP simulation results are employed. Hot spot stress (HSS) and weld toe magnification factor (Mk factor) formulas are used for the simplified CP method. CP phenomena of the fatigue test are studied through the fatigue assessment methods.

  • Experimental investigation of effects of ship propulsion shafting
           alignment on shafting whirling and bearing vibrations

      Abstract: Abstract The propulsion shafting is one of the main excitation sources of ship vibration and noise. Thus, shafting vibration and alignment are very important issues in the design of a propulsion system. In the present paper, the effects of shafting alignment on shafting whirling and bearing vibrations will be discussed. This study has been carried out experimentally on a test rig designed by the Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT). The results indicated that in design conditions, the effects of shafting alignment on both vibrations are mainly in the horizontal direction. It was found that both shafting whirling and bearing vibrations can be effectively reduced by adjusting the shafting alignment. However, compared to the vertical direction, the vibration in the horizontal direction can be more effectively reduced. Also, the minimum values of whirling vibration and bearing vibration are not in the same shafting alignment state. In addition, the effect of shafting whirling vibration on bearing vibration was little. Also, the bearing vibration changes little when the shafting rotation speed is between 90 and 300 r/min. Finally, it was found that at high rotation speeds, the bearing supporting performance is significantly affected by the shaft whirling effect.

  • Experimental study of fish behavior near a tidal turbine model under dark
           conditions

      Abstract: Abstract Understanding the risk of collision between tidal stream turbines and marine species is required for environmental impact assessment. Field observations are often limited by sensor capabilities. This study used a laboratory-scale water tank to monitor fine-scale fish behavior near a model of rotating turbine blades. Differences in behavior between three species were investigated: Oryzias latipes, Gnathopogon elongatus, and Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus. Behavioral response under dark conditions was further investigated for Gnathopogon elongatus, as it showed active behavior near the turbine under bright conditions. 71% of fish actively avoided or swam away from the turbine during bright conditions. Under dark conditions, 92% avoided or swam away; fish approached less frequently and retreated sooner than in bright conditions. Alertness in dark conditions possibly increases due to the inability of fish to visually detect the blades; thus, dark conditions may not be directly linked to a higher collision risk. No striking events occurred which resulted in injury or mortality.

  • Autonomous ships for container shipping in the Arctic routes

      Abstract: Abstract This study investigates the competitiveness of various autonomous ship categories for container shipping in the Arctic route. We propose a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework using four ship categories as alternatives and eight criteria for competitiveness evaluation. We analyse collected data using the Best–Worst Method (BWM), one of the recently developed MCDM methods. The findings reveal that operating expenses, navigation aspects, and environmental protection are the three most important criteria for deploying autonomous ships in the Arctic route. Among the three investigated autonomous ships alternatives, the semi-autonomous ship operated from a shore control centre (SCC) is prioritized for Arctic shipping in the foreseeable future, when benchmarked against the conventional ship. The SCC-controlled semi-autonomous ship alternative is competitive in the majority of the considered criteria including operating expenses, capital expenses, navigation, ship-shore and ship–ship communication, search and rescue, and environmental protection.

  • An improved spectral method and experimental tests for the low-frequency
           broadband noise of marine propellers

      Abstract: Abstract Called by Green Ship of the Future to reduce the propeller noise pollution in the subsea environment and avoid the possibility of causing propeller–shaft–ship resonance, the low-frequency broadband noise (LFBN) of marine propellers was studied theoretically and experimentally. The spectral method is improved by considering the blade section thickness and anisotropy in the turbulence spectrum, both of which are found to be effective in improving the prediction accuracy when compared with the experimental results. A series of propellers with the same blade geometry but different blade number were tested in the large cavitation channel at the China Ship Scientific Research Centre. The peak values in all conditions were close to the first-order blade-passing frequency. The effects of blade number and the advance coefficient were investigated by testing the propellers operating under different conditions. The effects were also studied using both the spectral method and experiment, and the results were consistent. Furthermore, the quantitative dependence of the LFBN on the influencing parameters was investigated using the sensitivity analysis. The rotational speed and turbulence intensity were found to be the two main factors, with greater than 10% effects. In addition, the effects of thickness and anisotropy scaling factor were evaluated using the spectral method. The results of this study provide guidance for controlling the LFBN in propeller design and optimisation.

  • Theoretical determination of asymmetric rolling amplitude in irregular
           beam seas

      Abstract: Abstract A methodology for predicting the probability density function of roll motion for irregular beam seas is developed in the author’s previous research. In this paper, two methods for the prediction of the probability density function (PDF) of the rolling amplitude are examined. One of these methods is an approach based on a non-Gaussian PDF with the use of the equivalent linearization and the moment method, which has been used by Maki in the field of naval architecture. In the framework of this method, the instantaneous joint PDF of the roll and roll rate can be calculated. Thereby, the transformation from the joint PDF to the PDF of the total energy H is necessary. In this paper, the transformation from the joint PDF of instantaneous roll and rate to the PDF of H was conducted. The other method is the energy-based stochastic averaging method, whereby the PDF of the total energy H is determined from which the roll amplitude is calculated. It is noteworthy that the proposed theory aims to predict the PDF of the amplitude of the vessel due to wind or flooding. For such conditions, the restoring curve (GZ curve) has asymmetricity. To take into account this asymmetricity, a new theory for the transform of the PDF of the total energy H to the PDFof amplitude is proposed. The obtained theoretical results show almost complete agreement, and both of the two theoretical methods i.e., the energy-based stochastic averaging method and the non-Gaussian PDF method with the use of the equivalent linearization and moment method, show equivalent prediction performance even in the asymmetric condition.

  • On neural network identification for low-speed ship maneuvering model

      Abstract: Abstract Several studies on ship maneuvering models have been conducted using captive model tests or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and physical models, such as the maneuvering modeling group (MMG) model. A new system identification method for generating a low-speed maneuvering model using recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and free running model tests is proposed in this study. We especially focus on a low-speed maneuver such as the final phase in berthing to achieve automatic berthing control. Accurate dynamic modeling with minimum modeling error is highly desired to establish a model-based control system. We propose a new loss function that reduces the effect of the noise included in the training data. Besides, we revealed the following facts—an RNN that ignores the memory before a certain time improved the prediction accuracy compared with the “standard” RNN, and the manual random maneuver test was effective in obtaining an accurate berthing maneuver model. In addition, several low-speed free running model tests were performed for the scale model of the M.V. Esso Osaka. As a result, this paper showed that the proposed method using a neural network model could accurately represent low-speed maneuvering motions.
