      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2022), p. 257 - 273AbstractAquatic ecosystems are often subject to multiple anthropogenic stressors that can significantly alter the processes within them. Due to the occasional observance of algal blooms in the reservoir Moste of the hydropower plant (HPP) on the Sava River in recent years, the present research was conducted to identify the possible anthropogenic drivers that significantly impact the ecological processes in the reservoir. The first hypothesis was that the tributaries and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and steel factory effluents are the main sources of nutrients and/or thermal pollution due to the inflow of nutrient-rich and/or warmer water into the reservoir. To assess the anthropological pressures on selected water bodies, the ecological conditions in the reservoir and its tributaries/effluents were evaluated using standard methods for assessing trophic status according to the OECD criteria, and additionally by total protein content (TPC) and electron transport system activity (ETSA) in sediments as alternative in water quality assessment. We hypothesised that TPC as a proxy of microbial biomass (i.e. structural measure) and ETSA of microbial communities as a functional measure of sediment processes will show an overall impact of anthropogenic stressors, including their interactions, over time. To test the hypotheses, the selected environmental indicators were measured in water and sediments from the reservoir and its main tributaries and effluents. According to the OECD criteria, the HPP Moste reservoir was categorised as a meso-eutrophic system. Relatively high water temperatures of some tributaries and effluents compared to the Sava River contributed to the warming and thermal stratification in the reservoir. Moreover, high nutrient inputs, especially nitrogen, likely stimulated the growth of primary producers in the reservoir. These results corroborate the first hypothesis that the processes in the reservoir are driven by the temperature regime, and increased concentrations of nutrients, which are all substantially modified by the hydropower plant operation and other human activities in the catchment. Moreover, the investigation of the microbial biomass and respiratory potential activity in the sediments as indicators of the trophic conditions revealed significant increase as a response to increased nutrient input and/or increased temperature.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2022), p. 275 - 295AbstractA long-term study of the activity concentration of the artificial radionuclide 137Cs in the abiotic components of the ecosystems of the Crimean salt lakes during 2016–2020 is carried out. It was found that the contribution of the atmospheric inflow of the post-accident 137Cs into the Crimean salt lakes accounted for 88.5 %, while the water pathway of the inflow of the dissolved radionuclide accounted for 11.5 %. Activity of the dissolved form of 137Cs in lake water is within the range of 167.4 Bq·m–3 from below detectable, whereas in the bottom sediments it is within the range of 15.3 Bq·kg–1 from below detectable (data 2019). The 137Cs concentration levels in the bottom sediments of the salt lakes are 3 or more times lower than that in the bottom sediments of the Black Sea, while the distribution coefficients (Kds) are within values 101–104 (Bq·kg–1 Bq·kg–1). It is found that the salinity of water bodies is the main geochemical factor affecting distribution of 137Cs between abiotic components of the studied lakes. The 137Cs inventory in water and bottom sediments of the studied lakes are 6.5 GBq and 45.4 GBq, respectively. It determines the bottom sediments of the Crimean salt lakes as a sink of the post-accident artificial radionuclide 137Cs.

Experiments were performed under manipulated acid rain levels (pH 7.1, 5.6, 4.5) and different light intensities to simulate environmental changes. Here, we found that acid rain and light made combined effects on growth, effective quantum yield (ΦPSII) and malondialdehyde (MDA) production. Optimum light for growth and photosynthesis of A. flos-aquae was 360 < µmol m–2 s–1. Slight acidity raised ΦPSII, but benefited nothing to algae growth. Extreme acidity facilitated cells to death at 165 µmol m–2 s–1 and 920 µmol m–2 s–1, reduced ΦPSII significantly by 14.3 %~59.9 %, and enhanced MDA production, as well as reduced light utilization efficiency (α) and maximal electron transport rate (rETRmax). These findings imply that extreme acidity made serious damages on A. flos-aquae.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2022), p. 305 - 323AbstractFilamentous diatoms generally form filamentous or chain like groups by the thorn or protrusion structure between adjacent cells, which are important components of phytoplankton communities in large river ecosystems. In order to explore the indicating functions of filamentous diatoms in response to cascade dam constructions in aquatic ecosystems, we investigated the 13 cascade dams along the main channel of the East River (China) during November 2018 (dry period) and July 2019 (wet period). A total of 18 filamentous diatoms (including variants) were identified, including 14 species of Aulacoseira and 4 species of Melosira, among which Aulacoseira granulata was predominant. The biomass of filamentous diatoms could be a good bioindicator for seasonal and spatial variations of water environments, since it appeared apparently higher in high water retention time (WRT) conditions (dry seasons or downstream). As for each cascade, the maximum or minimum biomass often appeared at stations closest to the dam. The filament length of Aulacoseira was longer than that of Melosira, which was mainly caused by morphological and structural differences. The filament length of A. granulata could be a good bioindicator of seasonal variations, since it was larger in dry seasons than that in wet seasons. The filament length of M. varians could be a good bioindicator of seasonal and spatial variations of water environments, since it appeared apparently more often in high WRT conditions (dry seasons or downstream). Moreover, both biomass and morphological traits of filamentous diatoms were mainly impacted by physical factors, which implied that the nutrient conditions of this fragmented aquatic ecosystem is beyond the demands of algal growth. In conclusion, the abundance and ecological traits of filamentous diatoms are suitable for identifying the spatial and seasonal characteristics of aquatic environments greatly affected by cascade dams.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2022), p. 325 - 341AbstractOxylipins produced by diatoms play an important role in structuring the zooplankton community by differentially affecting different grazers. Among common oxylipins, the Diatom Polyunsaturated-aldehyde (DPA), 2-trans,4-trans decadienal (DD) is toxic and a common secondary metabolite in diatoms. In limnetic zones of tropical wetlands, the Cladocera Echinisca triserialis (Brady) are abundant and co-occur with DD producing diatom blooms. The natural concentrations of secondary metabolites do not always cause mortality, but the chronic effects of these metabolites are more common. The present study investigates the influence of the 2-trans,4-trans decadienal (DD) on population trajectory and life table attributes of E. triserialis. We recorded the life table attributes of E. triserialis in a DD contaminated environment for two successive generations to elicit the generational response. The population growth trajectories were followed for the cohorts exposed to three concentrations (100, 250 and 500 µM) of DD and control without DD, whereas life table parameters were estimated at 250 µM concentration of DD against control. We compared population growth rate, longevity, maximum lifespan, life expectancy at birth, net and gross reproduction rates and intrinsic rates of natural increase between control and treatment cohorts for two successive generations. Significantly higher mortality of E. triserialis individuals and lower reproduction was recorded in a DD contaminated environment. F1 generation individuals produced in the DD applied medium recorded significantly higher survival and reproduction than control. Maternal exposure to DD registered a ~40 % higher Euler’s ‘r’ value reflecting increased tolerance in F1 generation. The present results suggest that prolonged exposure to DPA favours preexposed genotype within the community pointing to intergenerational experiential benefit in diatom aldehyde contaminated environments with time, a pattern consistent with the extension of parental experience to the F1 generation.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2022), p. - AbstractIn several regions of the world, local people depend on small ponds for drinking water, household activities and fish farming. However, how the physico-chemical water quality may influence the biological activity of fishes used for human consumption is poorly known. This study was aimed to investigate different physico-chemical parameters of water collected from some ponds of Malda district, West Bengal, India, to determine water quality, and to assess how water quality is related with the oxidative stress biomarkers of Rohu (Labeo rohita), which is the most important freshwater species cultured in India, Bangladesh and other adjacent countries. Water and fish samples were collected from sixteen ponds, scattered throughout Malda district. Physico-chemical parameters of water along with water quality index (WQI) for each sampling site has been determined and Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were also assessed from the liver of sampled fishes. The examined ponds showed WQI ranges from 34.1 to 90.3 which reflected the water quality status from good to very poor. Principal component analysis (PCA) of physicochemical parameters indicated that in the first principal component (PC 1), strong positive loading (> 0.30) was observed in case of chlorine (0.612), sulphate (0.927), sulphite (0.786), alkalinity (0.863) and hardness (0.703), while in the second principal component (PC 2), significant positive loading (> 0.30) was observed in case of chlorine (0.690), arsenic (0.642), dissolved oxygen (0.840), and pH (0.725). When the interrelationship between this physico-chemical parameters of water and fish antioxidant system was assessed, it was observed that the lipid peroxidation level showed a strong positive correlation with sulphate (r = 0.618, p < 0.05), sulphite (r = 0.697, p < 0.01), alkalinity (r = 0.757, p < 0.001) and hardness (r = 0.519, p < 0.05). Overall, the results suggest that the most waters are not suitable for drinking purpose and the local people need to treat the water before usage. Further, pollution caused a significant oxidative stress by dysregulating the antioxidant system in L. rohita, causing a potential health hazard. Therefore, the present study recommends the need for continuous monitoring of the ponds of India and identifying the pollution sources to protect these fresh water sources from further contamination.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2021), p. 173 - 185AbstractProbing relationships between spatial and temporal heterogeneity is a central pursuit in limnology and ecology, but until recently, data availability has constrained empirical tests of these patterns. In this study, I quantified spatial and temporal heterogeneity in fish species abundances within a landscape of north-temperate lakes and resolved an empirical relationship between heterogeneity dimensions. Across 18 species, there was an asymptotic relationship between spatial and temporal heterogeneity; thus spatial heterogeneity predicted temporal heterogeneity, but only at low heterogeneity levels. Some species expressed low levels of temporal-to-spatial heterogeneity while others, remarkably, had temporal heterogeneity ≥ 100 % spatial heterogeneity. Relationships between spatial and temporal heterogeneity are likely useful for conservation and management. For example, species with low temporal:spatial heterogeneity ratios might benefit from landscape-scale management efforts (e.g., watershed management, hydrologic connectance, public land acquisitions). In contrast, species with high temporal:spatial heterogeneity ratios might be more successfully managed locally (e.g., via biomanipulation, hydrologic management, habitat restoration).

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2021), p. 187 - 198AbstractLudwigia repens, a native, and Hygrophila polysperma, an invasive, are morphologically similar amphibious plants occurring in spring runs of Central Texas and other aquatic habitat in Florida. Hygrophila polysperma is a dominant species in static and slow flowing waters < 0.05 m s–2 while L repens occurs sporadically in similar conditions in the San Marcos River. Planting efforts to restore L repens in flowing water> 20 cm were unsuccessful where H polysperma was manually removed. In this interaction study, Ludwigia repens and Hygrophila polysperma were subjected to different planting ratios. L repens exhibited greater growth in shallow static water at a depth of 15 cm when grown in equal or higher ratios compared to H polysperma. No difference in growth rates was detected between the species grown in saturated soils. Photosynthetic rates were greater for L repens in saturated soils and shallow water indicating this species is more tolerant of sunlight than H polysperma Hygrophila polysperma allocated greater biomass to its roots indicating this species may be more adaptable to scouring from floods and extended droughts by greater regrowth from roots. Moreover, Hygrophila polysperma exhibited lower light saturation rates indicating this species is more tolerant of lower light levels. The results of this study indicate that L repens will be competitive in restoration efforts if planted in shallow water with no or minimal flows in areas where H polysperma has been removed.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2021), p. 199 - 209AbstractThe effects of gastropod Biomphalaria sp. on the benthic algae community (micro and macroalgae) were experimentally studied in an unshaded artificial stream. Using artificial substrates, two treatments were tested: with herbivores and without herbivores. The substrates remained submerged for 50 days, and the environmental and biological variables (algal abundance and richness) were obtained on days 7, 15, 30, 40 and 50 after the experiment has been installed. Repeated measure analyses of variance were applied to verify possible differences of chlorophyll-a content, species richness, microalgal density and macroalgal density and percent cover between treatments at each date. Results showed that herbivory pressure reduces significantly all measured biotic variables except algal richness. Higher presence of macroalgae was related to a higher presence of microalgae in the substrates, indicating a potential relationship between these components. Thus, it seems that herbivore activity over microalgal biomass may have an indirect and negative effect on macroalgae, so that a reduction in microalgal density by grazing may have led to a corresponding decrease in abundance of macroalgae. Thus, the results suggest that the establishment and development of macroalgae in lotic environments can be regulated by a top-down cascade effect, in which the action of herbivores, herein the scraper Biomphalaria sp., on microalgae indirectly impacts the abundance of macroalgae.

      Fundamental and Applied Limnology, (2021), p. 211 - 219AbstractA total of 260 bottled water samples from 10 pristine oligotrophic mountain lakes and rivers in southwestern Norway, sampled in 2012, 2013 and 2017, were exposed to a number of environmental conditions, disregarding established guidelines for handling and storing. Despite harsh treatment of the samples, only limited effects on pH (–0.02 ± 0.05, n = 260) and conductivity (+0.1 ± 0.3 µS cm–1, n = 260) and no effects on alkalinity (0 ± 2 µM, n = 260) were detected. Negligible effects of leaving a headspace (11 %) in the bottles were observed. However, uncapping of the bottles had an immediate deteriorating effect. We suggest that the chemistry of oligotrophic samples with low content of organic matter (“color”) are stable well within analytical uncertainties for these three parameters for at least two months, fairly independent of storage conditions and handling, provided that the bottles are stored capped and have not been opened.
