  • Magnetocaloric Effect and Magnetization of Gadolinium in Quasi-Stationary
           and Pulsed Magnetic Fields up to 40 kOe

      Abstract: This study is aimed at developing new experimental methods for investigating the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of solid magnetic materials near phase transitions in high magnetic fields with the use of polycrystalline Gd as an example. The magnetocaloric effect and the magnetization of Gd samples at ambient temperatures in quasi-stationary and pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 kOe are simultaneously measured using two different methods. The results of experiments obtained by different methods are compared, and the effect of eddy currents on the results is evaluated. The maximum value obtained for the magnetocaloric effect in Gd samples is ΔT = 7.3 K at T0 = 299.3 K in a pulsed magnetic field of 40 kOe.

  • Kerr Microscopy Study of Magnetic Phase Transition in Fe49Rh51

      Abstract: Magnetic phase transition in Fe49Rh51 was studied using wide-field Kerr microscopy. In zero magnetic field, temperature dependences of rotation of polarization plane on the sample surface are obtained. The analysis of the obtained data shows that the temperature of the AFM–FM phase transition is TN, heat = 323.5 K, and that of the reverse FM–AFM phase transition is TN, cool = 317 K. In a magnetic field of 0.5 T, the temperature hysteresis shifts to lower temperatures by 4 K. For the first time ever, the magnetic polar domains with a disordered labyrinthine shape are found on the sample surface.

  • Study of Heat Transfer Processes in a System Containing Fe–Rh
           Microwires

      Abstract: To date, the choice of the geometry of a magnetic cooling cell is a relevant problem in the field of magnetic refrigeration. In this study, the heat transfer processes in three-dimensional magnetic cooling cells containing Fe–Rh microwires are studied within the theoretical simulation approaches. The velocities of heat carrier flow velocities of 2.5 and 0.7 m/s are considered. It is found that the relaxation times are 0.8 and 1.4 ms for a flow velocity of 2.5 m/s, and 1.8 and 3.3 ms for a flow velocity of 0.7 m/s in the case of using microwire diameters of 10 and 50 µm, respectively. It is shown that the use of Fe–Rh microwires in magnetic cooling cells can be promising for magnetic refrigeration technology.

  • Direct and Inverse Magnetocaloric Effect in a Ni50Mn35Al2Sn13
           Heusler-Alloy Ribbon Sample

      Abstract: The magnetization of a fast-hardened ribbon Ni50Mn35Al2Sn13 sample has been studied and its magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been directly measured in the temperature range 100–350 K. The MCE has been investigated in a cyclic magnetic field of 1.8 T strength at a frequency of 0.2 Hz. The value of the inverse effect near the temperature of the magnetostructural phase transition (MSPT) has been shown to depend on the rate of temperature scanning. The higher the scanning rate, the greater the MCE value due to the kinetic relaxation effect in the martensitic phase and the irreversibility of the phase transition in the magnetic fields used. The value of the inverse effect when the magnetic field is turned on once is –0.39 K in the field of 18 kOe, and the value of the direct effect is 0.2 K. The significant magnetization increase observed near the ТС in a weak magnetic field (100 Oe) has been attributed to both the Hopkinson effect and the coexistence of two crystalline phases (austenite–martensite).

  • The Magnetocaloric Effect upon Adiabatic Demagnetization of a
           Polycrystalline DyNi2 Alloy

      Abstract: Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect of the DyNi2 alloy are performed under quasi-adiabatic conditions in a temperature range of 15 to 70 K in magnetic fields up to 10 T using a superconducting cryomagnetic system. Results of the measurements show that, in the phase transition temperature range of the DyNi2 alloy, the maximum adiabatic temperature change at a temperature of 46 K in a magnetic field of 10 T is ∆Tad = –6.2 K.

  • Thermophysical and Magnetocaloric Properties of the
           LaFe11.1Mn0.1Co0.7Si1.1 Alloy

      Abstract: The heat capacity (CP), magnetocaloric effect (∆T and ∆SM), thermal diffusivity η(T), and electrical resistivity ρ(T) of the LaFe11.1Mn0.1Co0.7Si1.1 alloy are studied in the temperature range of 80–300 K in magnetic fields of up to 8 T. Entropy change ∆SM in a magnetic field of 1.8 T is found equal to 4.6 J/(kg K). An anomaly that consists of a sharp decrease in the electrical resistivity in a narrow temperature range and subsequent restoration of its metallic behavior is observed in the curve of temperature dependence ρ(T) near Curie temperature TC. In the vicinity of TC, the following direct relationship between ∆T and resistivity change ∆ρ is found in a magnetic field of 1.8 T: ∆T(T) = α∆ρ(T). The η(T) dependence shows a pronounced minimum near TC, which indicates strong scattering of heat carriers on fluctuations of the magnetic order parameter and, possibly, on the crystal lattice distortions.

  • Magnetic and Magnetocaloric Properties of the Tm1 –
           xYx(Co0.84Fe0.16)2 Compounds

      Abstract: The effect of substitution of yttrium for thulium in the Tm(Co0.84Fe0.16)2 compound on the crystal structure, temperature and field dependences of magnetization (σ), temperature dependences of the high-field susceptibility (χhf), isothermal magnetic entropy change (∆Sm), and adiabatic temperature change (∆Tad) is studied. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties were measured in magnetic fields up to 90 kOe in a temperature range of 5–380 K. The dependences σ(T) measured in an external magnetic field of 100 Oe were found to exhibit the magnetization inversion. The field dependence of the magnetic moment of the Tm0.4Y0.6(Co0.84Fe0.16)2 compound, which is measured at 5 K, exhibits a point of inflection corresponding to a magnetic field of 49.5 kOe; the substantial increase in the magnetic field leads to an increase in the susceptibility of the sample to the magnetic field. Samples characterized by magnetic compensation temperature demonstrate the alternation of direct and inverse magnetocaloric effect (MCE). A number of the compounds under study exhibit the plateau-like temperature dependences of ∆Sm and ∆Tad in a temperature range of inverse MCE. The results obtained are discussed.

  • Review of Modern Theoretical Approaches for Study of Magnetocaloric
           Materials

      Abstract: For a quarter-century since the discovery of the giant magnetocaloric effect (MCE), the world scientific community has paid great attention to comprehensive studies of magnetically ordered compounds with a first-order magnetostructural phase transformation. The interest in the study is due both to the potential application of the MCE in magnetic cooling technology and the need to provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts of the problems and mechanisms underlying the magnetostructural transition. This review covers the thermodynamic foundations of the MCE, a comparative analysis of magnetocaloric materials with magnetostructural phase transitions, and outlines the phenomenological and microscopic models for predicting magnetocaloric properties developed by the global scientific community over the past 20 years.

  • Low Temperature Features of the Magnetic and Magnetocaloric Properties of
           the Mn1 – xCoxNiGe System (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.4)

      Abstract: A number of features, including the appearance of irreversible spontaneous and magnetic-field-induced low temperature transitions accompanied by a relatively sharp increase in magnetization, are identified by analyzing the experimental results obtained in a study of the magnetostructural and magnetocaloric properties of the Mn1 – xCoxNiGe (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.80) system. These transitions are most clearly observed in the concentration range 0.15 ≤ x ≤ 0.40 at temperatures much lower than the characteristic temperatures of second-order isostructural transitions from the paramagnetic hexagonal state to the ferromagnetic hexagonal one. The main purpose of this study is a theoretical analysis of low temperature features against the background of features observed in the entire concentration range 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.40. The phenomenological description of the experimental results is based on the concept of a soft mode for structural transitions between hexagonal and rhombic crystal structures when an internal orthogonal field that has an effect on the orthogonal spin component is used in the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. As was found for the spin subsystem within the molecular field approximation and for the structural subsystem within the shifted harmonic oscillator approximation, a number of features comparable to the features experimentally observed for 0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.1 and 0.1 < x ≤ 0.4 can come to light, which is dependent on the ratio between the orthogonal field and the exchange and structural contributions that describe the interaction of the spin and structural subsystems.

      Abstract: This study is devoted to ab initio calculations of the ground state properties of the Mn2NiGa Heusler alloy in the austenitic and martensitic phases. The calculations were performed using an approach in which exchange correlation effects are taken into account via the generalized and metageneralized gradient approximations. The martensitic phase includes four low symmetry structures: the tetragonal unmodulated and three-, five-, and seven-layer modulated monoclinic structures. It is shown that both approximations predict the martensitic transformation between the cubic austenitic and unmodulated martensitic phases, as well as the presence of modulated structures in the martensitic phase. However, the considered approximations lead to opposite behaviors of the energy of the structures and the modulation amplitude with an increase in the modulation period. Namely, these characteristics increase within the generalized gradient approximation and decrease within the metageneralized gradient approximation.

  • The Shape of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Lines of
           Pr0.7Ca0.15Ba0.15MnO3 Manganite

      Abstract: In Pr0.7Ca0.15Ba0.15MnO3 manganite, the spin dynamics is studied by the method of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The analysis showed that at the temperature ТL ≈Tmin, which corresponds to the minimal width of the EPR line, the shape of lines of absorption spectra is perfectly described by a single Lorentzian. At other temperatures (not ТL), the absorption lines of the EPR spectra are asymmetric, which is caused by their exchange broadening at Т < ТL or hopping conductivity at T > ТL.

      Abstract: Oscillations of the magnetoelastic subsystem of a ferrite film excited by an amplitude-modulated alternating magnetic field are studied. The possibility of detecting oscillations at the modulation frequency due to the magnetostrictive properties of the magnetic film is considered. The dependence of the excitation of magnetic and elastic dynamics on the material and excitation parameters, including the type of polarization of an alternating magnetic field, is determined.

  • Influence of the Anisotropy of Magnetic Films on the Detection of
           Magnetoelastic Fields upon Excitation by an Amplitude-Modulated Magnetic
           Field

      Abstract: The detection of an amplitude-modulated magnetic linearly polarized alternating field on the elastic subsystem of a magnetic film is considered. The dynamics of oscillations of the magnetization vector and elastic displacement of an isotropic film and films with different orientations of the easy axes of cubic anisotropy with respect to the normal is studied. Parametric patterns of oscillations of magnetization vector components and frequency characteristics of excited oscillations of magnetization and elastic displacement are constructed. The dependence of the oscillation modes of the elastic displacement of the magnetic film on the amplitude of the alternating magnetic field strength and the modulation index is determined.

  • Topologically Nontrivial Spin Textures in Thin Magnetic Films

      Abstract: The results of advanced research in the developing field of modern magnetism and spintronics, namely, topological nanomagnetism, in the framework of which the nature of the nontrivial spin textures and topological effects is studied, are reported. Most attention is paid to chiral spin textures that are recently discovered in thin magnetic films, such as skyrmions, skyrmioniums, antiskyrmions, and others, as well as to their static and dynamic properties, methods for their generation and control, and the prospects for creating functional devices based on them. Interest in one-, two-, and three-dimensional magnetic structures is driven not only by the range of new properties and effects that require further theoretical and experimental studies, but also by the potential for their applications in practice. The possibility of generating small and stable magnetic textures, such as skyrmions, opens up prospects for creating new types of random access memory and configurable logic, and for developing neuromorphic computation systems.

  • Effect of Milling on the Magnetic Properties of the Fe7S8 and Fe7Se8

      Abstract: Abstratct —X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and magnetic measurements are used to study the structure and magnetic properties of layered ferrimagnetic Fe7S8 and Fe7Se8 compounds depending on the milling time in a ball mill. The milling is shown to lead to the abrupt decrease in the coherent domain size, increase in microstresses, suppression of magnetization anomalies related to low-temperature phase transformations, substantial decrease in the resulting magnetization, and nonmonotonic change in the coercive force. The observed changes in the behavior of magnetization are discussed taking into account the possible redistribution of vacancies in the cation layer in the course of mechanical treatment.

  • Spin Currents and Nonlinear Dynamics of Vortex Spin Torque
           Nano-Oscillators

      Abstract: Vortex spin torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) are multilayer spin-valve magnetic nanopillars, in which the magnetic layers (one or both) contain a magnetic vortex, the dynamics of which provides microwave radiation. In vortex STNOs, it was possible to achieve a high microwave signal power (on the order of 1 μW) and a relatively narrow linewidth (several hundreds of kHz). To further increase the power and improve the spectral characteristics of vortex STNOs, the collective dynamics and synchronization conditions in the ensembles of such nanostructures are studied. The subject of this review is the latest achievements in the field of physics and technology of vortex STNOs.

  • The Effect of Selective Laser Melting Conditions on the Structure of an
           Alnico Alloy

      Abstract: The effect of main parameters of the selective laser melting (SLM) process on the structure and properties of permanent magnets made from an Alnico alloy is studied. Series of samples were prepared using various combinations of SLM conditions and spherical powder particles of an Alnico alloy prepared by melt spraying. A suitable range of manufacturing parameters is determined, which allows us to fabricate permanent magnets with an optimum structure. Conclusions about the effect of the main parameters of the SLM process on the surface morphology of the deposited alloy are inferred. The optimization of scanning conditions allows us to decrease the cracking and, therefore, to reach a high level of physical and mechanical properties of Alnico alloy samples.

  • Noncollinear Magnetic Structures in Charge-Ordered Pseudo-Perovskite

      Abstract: This paper is devoted to studying the noncollinear magnetic structures of charge-ordered manganites. The reasons for the formation of canted and perpendicular structures associated with the competition of orbital-dependent exchange in different crystallographic directions and the effect of single-ion anisotropy are considered. The mechanism of the formation of quasi-low-dimensional and strongly noncollinear magnetic structures is illustrated.

  • Influence of the Parameters of a Control Magnetic Field Pulse on Domain
           Wall Dynamics

      Abstract: The influence of the parameters of the control pulse of a magnetic field with the shape of a rectangular trapezoid on the dynamics of domain walls in ferrite garnets and orthoferrites is studied. The calculation results are compared with experimental data obtained by the high-speed photography method. It is shown that the front edge of the control pulse with duration of less than 80 ns has a slight effect on the dynamics of the domain wall in materials in which the velocity of domain wall motion does not exceed several hundred meters per second. If the domain wall velocity is several kilometers per second, then a front edge with a duration of 50 ns leads to long acceleration of the domain wall to the maximum velocity and reduces the time required for the wall to move with this velocity, thereby limiting the possibility of additional control over the wall dynamics. It is shown that an excessively long front edge of the pulse can lead to a decrease in the maximum velocity of the domain wall and its mobility in the experimental measurements. An excessively short control pulse with a fixed amplitude leads to a decrease in the maximum displacement of the domain wall and, consequently, to a decrease in the time of motion with a constant velocity that corresponds to a given amplitude of the control pulse.
