Different solvents are used to obtain ADS129 films.

  • Stimulated Raman Scattering of Chirped Ti:Sapphire Laser Pulses in BaWO4

      Abstract: Spectrum transformation of a chirped Ti:sapphire laser pulse stretched to 0.2 ns (initial duration of a transform-limited pulse of 90 fs) was experimentally studied in a tandem of BaWO4 crystals. To increase stimulated Raman scattering efficiency, broadband laser emission was used as a seed of this process. Efficiency of the Stokes component generation corresponding to the BaWO4 crystal phonon mode ν1(Ag) ≈ 925 cm–1 reached ~10%. Generation of the Stokes component corresponding to the weaker phonon mode ν3(Eg) ≈ 795 cm–1 and second Stokes components of ν1(Ag) and ν3(Eg) modes was observed. Mechanisms reducing the stimulated Raman scattering efficiency for the ν1(Ag) mode are discussed.

  • Structure and Properties of Exotic Nano- and Mesodiamonds with Pentagonal
           Symmetry

      Abstract: A comprehensive critical survey of structures of exotic nano-, meso- and microdiamonds with dodecahedral and icosahedral symmetry (N/MDPS) is presented. Due to their high dodecahedral or icosahedral symmetry, the unique complex atomic and electronic structure of N/MDPS leads to transport and mechanical properties very promising for photonic, quantum, and nanomechanical applications. To explain the nature of diamonds, theoretical models have been proposed based on the formation of twinned structures consisting of either 5 or 20 symmetrically equivalent tetrahedral and prismatic fragments of the face-centered cubic lattice with the formation of star-shaped or icosahedral clusters, respectively. It has been shown that these twinned nano- and mesodiamonds have limited dimensions due to accumulation of uncompensated structural stresses arising from the deviation of the angles between diamond <111> facets from perfect 72° in tetrahedral fragments of the face-centered cubic lattice to 70.5° between five symmetrically equivalent twinned fragments.

  • KA-14 Lidar for Emission Spectra of Crude Oil from the Absheron Peninsula

      Abstract: The paper deals with the use of the light detection and ranging (Lidar) system KA-14 for fluorescence spectra of crude oil spillage on the Caspian Sea and the Absheron Peninsula soil surfaces. The oil spillage occurs after its loss from Azerbaijan companies amounting to eight Azneft companies and four joint companies. The fluorescence spectra of crude oil are induced by the third harmonic generation of a 355-nm Nd:YAG laser at 20 Hz frequency, 60 mJ energy, and 7 ns pulse time. The analysis of these fluorescence spectra of crude oil from Azerbaijan deposits shows their shape, peak positions, fine structures (spectrum shoulders) at blue and red edges, and band intensity. The obtained results can be used to create the database of the fluorescence spectra of crude oil extracted from the Caspian Sea and the Absheron Peninsula.

  • Development of A. N. Terenin’s Ideas at Tomsk State University:

      Abstract: The stages of development of molecular photonics at Tomsk State University are presented. It was A. N. Terenin’s student, N. A. Prilezhaeva, who pioneered the Russian photochemistry and fostered the development of a Tomsk school of spectroscopists, at that time the only research team in the Asian part of Russia. In 1950, the research in the field of molecular spectroscopy and quantum chemistry of complex molecules was initiated by a Prilezhaeva’s student, V. I. Danilova, who became a TSU Professor at a later date. Fundamental problems were posed and solved, which related the spectra and the electron shell structure with the physical-chemical properties of several classes of complex organic molecules. The generalizations made by Danilova were quite valuable for the theory of molecular spectra and helped forming her own scientific school in 1970−80s.

  • Synthesis of Optical Nd:(Y,Gd)2O3 Ceramics and Investigation of Its
           Spectroscopic Characteristics

      Abstract: Fabrication of optical ceramics based on solid solution of yttrium and gadolinium sesquioxides activated by Nd3+ ions is considered. Nanopowder of (Nd0.008Y0.496Gd0.496)2O3 synthesized by laser ablation method was used as raw material. It was determined that laser-ablated nanoparticles initially have monoclinic phase, transformation of which into cubic phase starts at a temperature of 1100 °C and is fully completed at 1300°C. It was found that the best transparency of samples (79.9% at the wavelength of 1060 nm) and the lowest content of scattering centers of 2.7 ppm are reached by vacuum sintering of nanopowder previously calcined at 1000°C for 3 h. In the measured photoluminescence spectrum, a blue-shift of Nd3+ emission bands in (Y,Gd)2O3 matrix with respect to Y2O3 was observed. Broadening of emission bands and their partial overlap was determined suggesting the change in the local environment of neodymium embedded into positions of yttrium and gadolinium.

  • Influence of the Discharge Burning Conditions on Distributions of the
           Parameters of Plasma Generated in a Non-Self-Sustaining Glow Discharge
           Inside a Hollow Cathode

      Abstract: The parameters of the plasma of a non-self-sustaining glow discharge generated inside a metal hollow cathode 300 mm long and 25 mm in inner diameter are investigated. A feature of this system is the additional injection of electrons from the auxiliary discharge plasma formed by the plasma source with a combined PINK heated and hollow cathode. The dependences and combustion modes of the non-self-sustaining glow discharge are presented and described at a pressure in the range (0.06–1.4) Pa and a combustion voltage of (70–300) V. Studies of the plasma parameters using double Langmuir probes have shown that this discharge system provides generation of the nitrogen plasma inside the hollow cathode with inhomogeneity from ±12 to ±63%.

      Abstract: Using the method of the density functional theory (DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)), the vibrational absorption and emission spectra of bifluorene and terfluorene molecules are calculated. A good agreement is obtained between the model and experimental spectra. The vibrational promoting modes forming a vibronic progression in the emission bands are determined.

      Abstract: The results of authors’ studies of the photochemical activity and phosphorescence of oxygen molecules upon direct laser excitation of oxygen in aerated organic solvents and water have been shortly summarized. The absorption spectra of oxygen dissolved in these media at normal pressure and temperature have been obtained in the spectral range of 600–1300 nm. The information received is of fundamental importance for spectroscopy of molecular oxygen and elucidation of the role of oxygen as a photoreceptor triggering the biological action of laser radiation.

  • Phototransformation of Bisphenol a in Water in the Presence of Materials
           Based on Ultrafine Polypropylene Fibers

      Abstract: The effect of UV radiation on the efficiency of bisphenol A (BPA) phototransformation in water in the presence of polypropylene nonwoven material based on ultrafine fibers has been studied. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of the investigated substance with fibers of different properties have been obtained. After excitation with an excilamp, the main photoproduct – BPA – fluoresces in the region of ~408 nm. With an increase in the irradiation time from 0 to 10 min, the fluorescence intensity of this photoproduct increases. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of cyclohexane containing compounds desorbed from the fiber surface indicate the adsorption of the photoproduct on its surface during UV irradiation.

  • Effect of Laser and Temperature Treatment on the Optical Properties of
           Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Prepared Via Pulsed Laser Ablation

      Abstract: Nanomaterials based on titanium dioxide are of considerable interest as promising photocatalysts for water and air purification and hydrogen generation. To increase the efficiency of TiO2, it is necessary to extend the spectral range of its absorption to the visible region. In this work, nanocolloids of dark titanium dioxide, initially prepared by pulsed laser ablation (Nd:YAG laser, 1064 nm, 7 ns) in water, are subjected to an additional laser treatment from the same source. Colloidal solutions are dried and TiO2 powders are annealed. A comparative analysis of the optical properties of the materials prepared with and without extra treatment by the methods of diffuse reflection spectroscopy, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy is carried out. The bandgap of the materials is estimated, and the nature of the defect states responsible for intense absorption in the visible region of the spectrum is determined.

  • Formation of Alloyed Layers with Improved Mechanical Properties on the
           MA-2 Magnesium Alloy Surface by the Method of Electron-Ion-Plasma

      Abstract: The MA-2 magnesium alloy surface has been alloyed with aluminum by the method of combined electron-ionplasma exposure which consists in deposition of a thin (1 μm) aluminum film from an arc discharge plasma and subsequent pulsed electron-beam processing of the film/substrate system. The optimal modes of Al–Mg alloy formation by the method of electron-ion-plasma exposure have been revealed as a result of temperature measurements on the specimen surface during irradiation with a pulsed electron beam depending on the energy density and pulse duration. It is shown that the combined surface processing in the optimal modes makes it possible to increase the microhardness of the alloyed layer by a factor of up to 1.7 due to alloying of the magnesium alloy surface with aluminum and formation of particles of the Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography of Young’s Modulus Variations in
           Lymphedematous Tissue Model

      Abstract: The paper presents the optical coherence tomography investigations of tissue swelling caused by acute and chronic inflammations including lymphedema. Since lymphedema is characterized by a higher content of proteins in the intercellular fluid, the lymphedematous tissue model is based on the different fluid content in the muscular tissue. It is shown that Young’s modulus of the tissue sample reduces monotonically with increasing intercellular protein fraction.

      Abstract: The history of spectral studies of surface processes at St. Petersburg University from the pioneering pre-war experiments by Terenin and Kassparov to the present day is described. The development of experimental techniques and advances in the studies of surface acid and basic sites, functional groups, and adsorption complexes is discussed. Spectroscopy in a wide temperature range allows studying such phenomena as lateral interactions between adsorbed molecules and linkage isomerism and obtaining information on the mechanism of dark and photostimulated reactions. Attention is paid to the application of computer modeling and quantum chemistry in the study of surface processes.

  • Effect of a Homogeneous Dielectric Medium on the Luminescence of Singlet
           Oxygen

      Abstract: Results of an analysis of our and literature data devoted to the study of the effect of a homogeneous dielectric medium on the rate constant of the \( {}^1{\Delta}_g{\to}^3{\Sigma}_g^{-} \) radiative transition in singlet oxygen are presented. It is shown that the influence of the refractive index n on the radiative rate constant is due to the change of the density of photon states and the local field factor. At the same time, in a dielectric medium, the transition dipole moment increases significantly as a result of contact of singlet oxygen with solvent molecules. Only taking into account all of the above factors will provide a consistent explanation of the influence of the medium on the rate constant of the luminescence of singlet oxygen.

  • Protolytic Equilibrium of Excited States of Fluorescein

      Abstract: The protolytic equilibrium of the excited states of fluorescein depends not only on the equilibrium in the ground state, but also on the efficiency of photoexcitation, relaxation, and proton transfer in the excited state. Due to rate-competing radiative and non-radiative processes occurring in a mixture of protolytic forms, there is still a problem of identifying the fluorescent characteristics of individual forms of fluorescein. In this work, the steady-state distribution of the concentrations of the ground and excited states of the cation, a number of tautomers of the neutral form, monoanion, and dianion of fluorescein under continuous photoexcitation was simulated. The pH values of the predominant existence of individual protolytic forms in the excited states were determined, which were confirmed by steady-state fluorescence measurements. Possible reasons for the discrepancies in the published data on the fluorescent properties of individual protolytic forms of fluorescein are discussed and refined data on the spectral shapes and lifetimes of the quinoid and monoanion of fluorescein are obtained.

  • Induced Absorption Spectra of a Crystal Violet Dye

      Abstract: Using the pump-probe method, the short-lived induced and long-lived absorption capacity of a crystal violet (CV) dye is studied in various solvents. The solvents selected for this study are water, dimethyl sufoxide (DMSO), and isopropyl and ethyl alcohols. The formation of triplet-triplet states of CV is observed in these solvents under excitation by the 4-th harmonic nanosecond radiation of a Nd:YAG-laser (wavelength 266 nm, average power 25.5 mW, pulse repetition frequency 3 Hz, pulse duration 10 ns, and peak power 10−12 MW/cm2). It is shown that the nonstationary spectra of induced absorption of CV in ethanol contain two bands at 400 and 485 nm. In isopropyl alcohol, both singlet-singlet and long-lived triplet-triplet absorption of CV > 17.2 ns is recorded at room temperature in the region of 400–500 nm.

  • Two-Photon Excitation Fluorescence Microscopy of Rat Elastin Fiber In Vivo

      Abstract: The paper presents the results of two-photon excitation fluorescence microscopy of rat elastin fiber in vivo. It is shown that in approximating the fluorescence attenuation curve by the two-exponential model, the certain parameters of human and rat elastin fibers have similar distribution.

  • Influence of UV Radiation on Spectral Properties of
           2,6-Di(Hydroximethyl)-4-Methylphenol

      Abstract: The effect of UV radiation on the spectral properties of aqueous solutions of 2,6-di(hydroxymethyl)-4-methylphenol has been studied. Excilamps based on working molecules: KrCl (222 nm), XeBr (283 nm), and XeCl (308 nm) were used as UV radiation sources. The degree of photodegradation depends on the irradiation time, concentration of the examined compound, and characteristics of the excilamp used for irradiation.
