  • Magnetoresistance and Quantum Oscillations in WTe2 Semimetal

      Abstract: The discovery of extreme magnetoresistance (MR) in nonmagnetic materials attracted attention to WTe2 semimetal. We studied MR in a single crystal of tungsten ditelluride in the range of magnetic fields up to 14 T. MR increased with increasing field following a close-to-quadratic law without saturation. The Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations were observed. Four fundamental frequencies were found in the oscillation spectrum, which correspond to two electron and two hole pockets, caused by strong spin–orbit coupling.

  • Formation of the Cu6Sn5 Intermetallics in Cu/Sn Thin Films

      Abstract: The formation of the Cu6Sn5 intermetallic in Sn(55nm)/Cu(30nm) thin-film bilayers has been studied upon heating the film sample from room temperature to 300°C directly in a column of a transmission electron microscope in the electron diffraction mode with recording electron diffraction patterns. The thin films synthesized by the solid-state reaction have been found to be single-phase and consist of the η-Cu6Sn5 hexagonal phase (95‒260°C). It has been suggested basing on the effective interdiffusion coefficient (5 × 10‒16 m2/s) estimated in the course of the reaction that the main mechanism of the formation of the Cu6Sn5 thin films is diffusion along grain boundaries and dislocations.

  • Formation of Pentagonal Nickel Microcrystals in Continuous
           Electrodeposited Coatings with a Selective Inhibition of the Growth of
           Their Individual Facets

      Abstract: Abstract—This report presents the experimental facts which demonstrate the possibility of controlling the habit of microcrystals that are structural units of electrodeposited nickel coatings. The introduction of additives (inhibitors) into an electrolyte with a certain chemical composition influences the competition in the evolution of individual crystallographic facets of growing microcrystals and initiates the growth of microcrystal facets with a certain crystallographic orientation. This leads to the preparation of a nickel coating mainly consisting of microcrystals containing disclination-type defects and exhibiting the pentagonal symmetry.

      Abstract: – Anticommutator Green functions and energy spectra of fullerene C26 and endohedral fullerene U@C26 with D3h symmetry groups are obtained in the analytical form within the Hubbard model and static fluctuation approximation. The energy states are classified using group theory methods; allowed transitions in the energy spectra of C26 and U@C26 molecules with D3h symmetry group are determined.

      Abstract: A model spin system S = 1 with a strongly anisotropic g factor is considered. The response of the system on low-frequency ac magnetic field is calculated numerically. The effect of the Landau–Zener transitions on the system response in the passage through the vicinity of the anticrossing energy levels. The ac susceptibility is calculated and the influence of such transitions on the position of the ac susceptibility maximum.

  • Luminescent Properties of Colloidal Ag2S Quantum Dots for Photocatalytic
           Applications

      Abstract: The structural and optical properties of colloidal Ag2S quantum dots in different environments are studied. With the help of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and X-ray Energy-Dispersive analysis, the formation of Ag2S quantum dots with average size of 2–3 nm with monoclinic crystal lattice, and Ag2/SiO2 core–shell systems based on them, has been enstablished. A change in the luminescence quantum yield of the quantum dots in the case of a change of the surface environment is shown. Decoration of TiO2 nanoparticles with a size of 10–15 nm with Ag2S quantum dots is performed and the effect of the structure of the interfaces of the quantum dots and their environment (2-mercaptopropionic acid, water, ethylene glycol, SiO2 dielectric shells with thicknesses of 0.6 and 2.0 nm) on the formation of TiO2–Ag2S heterosystem is analyzed. The signs of charge phototransfer upon adsorption onto the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles are found for the Ag2S quantum dots passivated with 2-mercaptopropionic acid. The signs of appearance of reactive oxygen species as a result of charge phototransfer in a TiO2–Ag2S heterosystem are found based on the observation of photobleaching of methylene blue upon excitation of the system from the region outside of TiO2 fundamental absorption.

  • Tunnel Current between Structural Elements of Thin Graphene/Nanotube Films

      Abstract: On the basis of the constructed atomistic models of graphene/nanotube films with different numbers of nanotubes in supercells, in silico studies of the regularities of non-uniform density distribution, which determine the presence of an island structure in such films, are carried out. As a result of quantum molecular and dynamic simulation, it is established that thin tubes of sub-nanometer diameter are wrapped in graphene sheets, which makes them energetically steady and stable. Tunnel contacts between individual film fragments that are not covalently bonded are also studied, in particular, between graphene sheets with different topology of the contacting edges, zigzag and armchair, depending on the distance between them, and between tubes of various chiralities including (6,3), (4,4), (6,5), (12,6), and (16,0). It is found that the tunnel contacts of tubes with a semiconductor type of conductivity are characterized by the presence of voltage intervals with negative differential resistance in I–V characteristics. Such voltage intervals are not observed at all in tubes with a metallic character of conductivity. The new knowledge obtained is important for estimating the electrical conductivity of such films, two thirds of which are semiconductor tubes.

  • Effect of the Structural State and Oxide Coating on the Mechanostability
           of VT1-0 Titanium upon Its Cyclic Loading

      Abstract: The fatigue properties of a submicrocrystalline titanium are shown to be substantially higher than those of a coarse-grained state. A deposition of an oxide coating leads to insignificant increase in these properties for titanium with a submicrocrystalline and coarse-grained structures. Some peculiarities of the fatigue fracture of submicrocrystalline and coarse-grained titanium are analyzed.

  • Thermal and Magnetocaloric Properties of
           La0.7Sr0.3 – xBaxMnO3 Manganites

      Abstract: The results of studying the effect produced by the partial substitution of Sr2+ ions by Ba2+ ions on the thermophysical and magnetocaloric properties of La0.7Sr0.3 – xBaxMnO3 manganite (x = 0; 0.02; 0.05, and 0.10) within a temperature range of 100–400 K in a magnetic field of up to 1.8 T are submitted. It has been shown that such substitution leads to an essential decrease in TС. In the behavior of the thermal diffusivity η(Т) and thermal conductivity κ(Т) near TС, there occur the minima associated with the scattering of photons on both local crystal lattice distortions and spin fluctuations. Absolute thermal conductivity values descend with an increase in the disorder parameter. The magnetocaloric effect exhibits a weak dependence on the substitution level (x).

  • The Effect of Transition Metals on the Dielectric Properties of
           Diamond-Like Silicon–Carbon Films

      Abstract: Studies of the effect of transition metals on the phase composition and electric and dielectric properties of diamond-like silicon–carbon films fabricated by plasma chemical decomposition of poly(phenylmethylsiloxane) are conducted. Frequency, temperature, and concentration dependences of the specified properties are obtained. It is shown that electrical conductivity continuously increases with the increase in the concentration of the metal and the concentration dependences of dielectric permeability and dielectric loss tangent have a minimum at the concentration of the metal of 0.5–2 at %. The possible reasons for this phenomenon are analyzed.

  • First-principles Calculations of Magnetic Anisotropy of Fe and Co Films,
           Separated by Nonmagnetic Metallic Interlayers

      Abstract: The magnetic characteristics of Co and Fe monolayer films on Cu and Pt surfaces have been numerically calculated using the VASP software package. Dependences of a difference in the total energies of the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic configurations on the convergence parameters and nonmagnetic-material thickness are calculated. The values of magnetic anisotropy and atomic magnetic moments in the Co/Cu/Co, Fe/Pt/Fe, Co/Pt/Co, and Pt/Co/Cu/Co/Pt structures are determined in dependence of the surface-face orientation. The reorientation phenomenon in the Co/Cu/Co structure (when anisotropy of Co films, parallel to the surface plane, is changed to perpendicular anisotropy because of introduction of an ultrathin Pt film into the structure) is confirmed for the (110) and (111) faces.

      Abstract: Crystallization of a weakly supercooled Lennard-Jones liquid has been investigated by molecular-dynamics simulation using metadynamics. The Steinhardt order parameter Q6 of a group of particles around a randomly chosen atom and the potential energy of the system are chosen as collective variables for metadynamics simulation of the phase transformation. A change in the values of collective variables above the activation crystallization barrier has been traced. The work of formation of a critical nucleus is estimated.

  • On the Nature of Stimulated Emission in ZnO in a Wide Temperature Range

      Abstract: We studied the near-edge emission of MBE ZnO films in wide ranges of excitation intensity (up to 1000 kW/cm2) and temperatures (5–300 K). The manifestations of exciton–phonon, exciton–exciton, and exciton–electron interactions in stimulated emission spectra are discussed. A change in the mechanisms of stimulated emission in different temperature ranges was found.

  • Effect of Hydrogen on Young’s Modulus and Internal Friction of
           V–4Ti–4Cr Alloy

      Abstract: We studied Young’s modulus and internal friction of the V–4Ti–4Cr alloy with different hydrogen impurity concentrations in the temperature range of 100–300 K at oscillation frequencies of ~100 kHz. Hydrogenation of the alloy causes a minimum in the Young’s modulus temperature dependence due to the precipitation/dissolution of vanadium monohydride particles and a relaxation peak in the temperature spectrum of internal friction at ~140 K, which can be associated with Snoek-type hydrogen relaxation due to the interaction of hydrogen atoms with titanium atoms.

  • In Situ TEM Study of Phase Transformations in Nonstoichiometric
           Ni46Mn41In13 Heusler Alloy

      Abstract: This paper presents a study of the metamagnetostructural transition of the martensitic type in the Ni46Mn41In13 alloy with magnetic shape memory and inverse magnetocaloric effect. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the characteristic temperatures of the direct transformation (start at Ms = 253 K, finish at Mf = 164 K) and the reverse transformation (As = 203 K and Af = 236 K, respectively). The characteristic features of the transformation, that is, a decrease in the temperature of the onset of the direct transformation and the presence of a residual austenite phase, and premartensite states, were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The estimated thickness of the material at which the martensitic transformation is suppressed is 50 nm.

  • Anomalous Change in the Size of a Spin Polaron in the Paramagnetic
           Temperature Range in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7

      Abstract: This study continues investigation of the magnetic and electrical properties of double perovskite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7, which has a colossal magnetoresistance (above 1200) near the Curie temperature. It is shown that the colossal magnetoresistance observed in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 is adequately described based on the “orientational” and “spin-polaron” conduction mechanisms. It is found that, in the absence of a magnetic field, the linear size of a spin polaron decreases with an increase in temperature in the ferromagnetic region, whereas during the transition of manganite to the paramagnetic state the linear size begins to increase, with a maximum at 180 K. At temperatures above 180 K, the anomalous temperature change in the size of a spin polaron disappears. In the absence of a magnetic field, the detected peak in the temperature dependence of the spin-polaron size is maximum; the peak height decreases after applying a magnetic field. Mechanisms are proposed to explain this anomalous temperature behavior of the spin-polaron size.

  • Electron Density Fluctuations and Phase Transition in α-Titanium

      Abstract: It is shown that topological singularities of the electron structure of α-titanium lead to the appearance of temperature-induced electron density fluctuations which disappear near the temperature of the phase transition from the HCP lattice (α-phase) to the BCC lattice (β-phase). The experimentally observed strong linear temperature increase in magnetic susceptibility in the α-phase and its jump when going to the β-phase are described. The considered fluctuation picture describes the sharp fall of electron entropy and softening of longitudinal phonon modes related to the electron–ion interaction. It is shown that the phase transition temperature in α-titanium depends on the position of the Fermi level. The position can be changed by introduction of impurities.

  • Cr3+-Doped Crystals as Promising Materials for Laser Cooling of Solids

      Abstract: The fluorescence of some dielectric crystals doped with Cr3+ ions is studied upon laser excitation in the range of the long wavelength tail of the absorption spectrum (cooling mode). Although no actual optical cooling was observed, spectroscopic results and temperature measurements of the samples indicate that electron-phonon bands of Cr3+ ions are of interest for obtaining laser cooling.

  • Phase Transitions in the Three-Dimensional Weakly Diluted Potts Model with
           q = 5

      Abstract: Using computer-based simulation methods, phase transitions in the three-dimensional weakly diluted Potts model with the spin state number q = 5 are studied. Systems with linear dimensions L × L × L = N, L = 10–40, at spin concentrations p = 1.00 and 0.90 are considered. The obtained numerical data indicate that introduction of a minor disorder in the form of nonmagnetic impurities (p = 0.90) into the three-dimensional Potts model with q = 5 is not significant for the first-order phase transition.
