Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 227 - 237Abstract Eleidae are an aberrant Barremian–Danian family of cyclostome bryozoans characterized by possessing operculate autozooids and, in some species, mandibulate polymorphs resembling cheilostome avicularia. All formally described species are from Europe, or the immediately adjoining parts of Asia in the former USSR. The palaeogeographical distribution of the family is enlarged here by the description of Pollexelea badvei gen. et sp. nov. from the Albian of Tamil Nadu, India, and Reptomultelea cuffeyi sp. nov. and Reptomultelea aff. bituberosa Taylor, 1994 from the Albian of Texas, USA. These new records show that by Albian times eleids had dispersed well beyond their European diversity centre, but the absence of Late Cretaceous occurrences points to a failure to prosper outside Europe. Pollexelea gen. nov. is unique among known eleids in having columnar or club-shaped colonies composed of stacked subcolonies, a colony-form convergent with that seen in some genera belonging to other cyclostome families (e.g., Radicipora, Tholopora, Coronopora).

(Palicidae Bouvier, 1898) is reported from the lower Pleistocene beds exposed at the Poggi Gialli quarry (Sinalunga, Tuscany, central Italy). This species, sharing some affinities with the extant and fossil species of Palicus Philippi, 1838, represents the first record of a palicid crab from the Pleistocene, enlarging the very scarce knowledge of the fossil representatives of the family. Palicus saenaensis n. sp. represents the second report of the genus in the worldwide fossil record.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 245 - 262Abstract The East sector of the post-Variscan Mulargia-Escalaplano Basin of central Sardinia, Italy preserves a 150‑ to 200‑m-thick succession of continental sedimentary and volcanic deposits, pertaining to the red bed Upper Rotliegend Group (latest Carboniferous? to Middle Permian?). This group is formed by two superposed alluvial-lacustrine depositional cycles, respectively the Mulargia Formation and the Pegulari Formation, each one of them followed in turn by volcanic rocks represented by the Sa Fossada Rhyolitic Unit and by the Mataracui Andesitic Unit. The study of a well-exposed succession at the Pegulari locality showed that the intermediate part of the Permian Pegulari Formation in the Escalaplano area is characterized by cyclic siliciclastic, carbonate and minor evaporite deposits, with evidence of inorganic and organic deposition in a playa mud-flat to playa lake environment (possibly a recharge playa). Lake-shore shifts were probably influenced by seasonal fluctuations in an extremely dry climate. These deposits contain large burrow systems, which are tentatively attributed to the activity of tetrapods. They are associated with grooves along the upper bedding surface of a sandstone bed, which connect to burrow systems and show features of bioerosion. These grooves represent Sulcolithos aff. variabilis and were probably produced by freshwater polychaetes. This trace-fossil association from the Early Permian represents the first occurrence of Sulcolithos from a continental environment, beside evidence of macrobioerosion. If produced by crayfish, it would support phylogenetic assumptions that crayfish started to diverge in the Carboniferous–Permian, and polychaetes colonized freshwater to schizohaline environments with significant salinity changes. The evidenced depositional environment in the Sardinian Pegulari Formation shows close analogies with the Lower to Middle Permian Salagou Formation of the French Lodève Basin, which differs from the former by its abundant fossil remains and trace fossils.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 263 - 273Abstract The reappraisal of putative leucosiid crabs from the lower Pleistocene of Poggi Gialli (Sinalunga, Tuscany, central Italy) allow us to establish their systematic assignment within Leucosiidae. Ebalia sp. 1, E. sp. 2, and E. sp. 3 reported by Baldanza et al. (2017) have been re-examined in addition to three recently collected specimens. The study of these specimens allowed us to describe Ebalia Leach, 1817, with E. baldanzae n. sp. and E. parva n. sp. (ex E. sp. 1) and Sienalia n. gen., with S. fredianii n. sp. (type species) and S. ristorii n. sp. (ex E. sp. 2, E. sp. 3). These leucosiid crabs result exclusively from the Poggi Gialli beds and represent the richest differentiate pebble-crabs community from the Pleistocene of Europe reported to date, thus highlighting the unique nature of this unsuspected assemblage.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 275 - 297Abstract The Lower Creataceous Fahliyan Formation of the Khami Group in the studied oil fields (Darquain and Arvand) hosts important hydrocarbon reservoirs in SW Iran. In the studied wells (well No. 33 in Darquain oil field and well No. 2 in Arvand oil field), the thickness of this formation is 280 and 110 meters, respectively. In both oil fields, the lower boundary with the Hith Formation is unconformable, while the upper boundary with the Gadvan Formation is conformable. The core and cutting analysis were used to identify four facies associations with 12 microfacies which can be grouped into four depositional environments: tidal flat, restricted lagoon, shoal and shallow open marine, deposited on a homoclinal ramp. Based on microfacies analysis and sequence stratigraphic concepts, 3 (in Arvand oil field) and 4 (in Darquain oil field) 3rd‑order sequences were identified. Palaeogeographic data show that the deposition of the Fahliyan Formation occurred at low latitudes near the equator.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 299 - 312Abstract Herein the fossil assemblage of the Middle Miocene (12.06 Ma) locality of Markt Rettenbach (Southern Germany) is studied. The fossil-bearing sediments of the clay pit have been known for almost a century, but until now only little is known about its fauna. A small sample of fossils collected in the 1940s is housed in the collections of the Kempten-Museum in the Zumsteinhaus (Germany). Since then, the clay pit has been re-naturalised and is not available for any further excavations and collecting of fossils. Thereby, this material, along with a single mandible of a Listriodon splendens described in the past, are the only information about the Middle Miocene fauna of this locality. Herein, five large mammals were identified: a proboscidean, a hornless rhino, a large-sized suid, a small ruminant (possibly a tragulid), and a medium-sized pecoran (possibly a small bovid). Thus, this work represents the first detailed study of the known mammalian fauna of Markt Rettenbach overall. Its fauna is comparable to other Middle Miocene sites such as Gratkorn (Austria) and matches the late Middle Miocene age previously suggested for the locality.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 313 - 331Abstract Cephalopods of the genus Germanonautilus Mojsisovics, 1902 were common inhabitants of Triassic seas in the Northern Hemisphere. The individuals of this genus also lived in the Germanic Basin, but their remains have very rarely been found in the Lower Muschelkalk deposits of the easternmost part of this basin in present-day Poland. New finds allow us to broaden the knowledge of these nautiloids’ occurrence and stratigraphical range. Four newly collected fossils and one historical specimen of Germanonautilus, of Pelsonian age, are here recorded in detail for the first time. Specimen MGUWr 6773s from the Gogolin Formation of Opole Silesia and the historical specimen from the Plagiostoma striatum Beds in the Holy Cross Mountains are both referred to as Germanonautilus cf. dolomiticus (Quenstedt, 1845). In contrast, specimen from the Łukowa Beds in the Holy Cross Mountains, along with specimens MGUWr 6772s from the Gogolin Formation and MGUWr 6774s from the Dziewkowice Formation are left in open nomenclature as Germanonautilus sp. The specimen from the Łukowa Beds is the oldest known representative of this genus in the Holy Cross Mountains, and proves that this nautiloid genus had migrated earlier to this part of the basin than previously thought. This specimen has a close cover of adnate shells of the bivalve genus Placunopsis von Schlotheim, 1820, accompanied by the ichnofossils of Talpina gruberi (Mayer, 1952). These encrusters and bioerosional trace fossils are here described from Triassic cephalopods from Poland for the first time, and examples of T. gruberi described herein are most probably the oldest known specimens from the Triassic of the Germanic Basin. The post-mortem history of this new nautiloid specimen from the Holy Cross Mountains was complex. The presence of both Placunopsis and T. gruberi demonstrates that the omission surface must have developed during deposition of the Łukowa Beds.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 115 - 124Abstract Subfossils of different land vertebrate groups dating from Madagascar’s Late Pleistocene and Holocene have been excavated, including extinct birds such as the waterbird Alopochen sirabensis (Anseriformes, Anatidae), a type of sheldgoose. Material of this species is relatively common at certain subfossil sites that today include areas with different ecosystems than a few thousand years ago when these populations were still extant. Herein we examine aspects of postcranial osteological variation in this species, using comparative data from skeletal specimens of the sole extant member of the genus, A. aegyptiacus, for extrapolation, and infer different aspects of the extinct species biology via traditional osteometric analyses. Alopochen sirabensis shows no evidence of sexual dimorphism nor geographic variation in body size. Its body mass is estimated to have been about 2.2 kg.

The new extinct species, Wanachia pinisucciniferae sp. nov., is described and compared with extant congeners. The occurrence of this Trichaptum-associated genus in Baltic amber can indirectly indicate the presence of these fungi (Agaricomycetes: Hymenochaetales) in the Eocene amber forests.

Neues Jahrbuch für Geologie und Paläontologie - Abhandlungen, (2022), p. 133 - 150Abstract Bulk sampling of a Lower Cenomanian (Upper Cretaceous) basal transgressive microconglomerate level from the open pit located at Peștera (SE Romania) yielded a rich sample of fish teeth. Despite their large numbers, few retain diagnostic morphological characters due to specific post-mortem abrasion. Seven orders of Chondrichthyes are represented together with at least two orders of Actinopterygii. The specimens belong to Heterodontus, Synechodus, Paranomotodon, Squalicorax, Cretalamna, Scapanorhynchus, Protolamna, Carcharias, Protoscyliorhinus, Squatina, Ptychodus, Turoniabatis, Hexanchidae indet., Enchodontidae indet., and Pycnodontiformes indet. The assemblage is the first one from the Cretaceous to be reported from Romania and provides evidence about a possible connection to some of the Western European basins. The fish fauna indicates an environment with probable moderately deep waters.
