  • Perceived racial discrimination and healthy behavior among African
           Americans.
    • Abstract: Objective: Numerous studies have found evidence of a link between perceived discrimination and unhealthy behavior, especially substance use. Within this body of literature, however, several studies have found unexpected evidence of a positive relation between perceived racial discrimination among African Americans—mostly women—and certain types of healthy behavior, primarily exercise and healthy eating. The current study further examined this positive relation, including an anticipated moderator: optimism. It also examined the relation between perceived racial discrimination and a correlate of unhealthy behavior: BMI. Method: Six waves of data were collected over 14 years in three related samples of African Americans from families participating in the Family and Community Health Study. Each family included an adolescent (Mage = 10.5 at Wave 1), the adolescent’s primary caregiver (Mage = 37), and, in some cases, an older sibling of that adolescent (Mage = 13). Wave 1 Ns were 889, 889, and 295, respectively. Healthy behavior was defined as diet and exercise. Results: There was very little evidence of a long-term relation between perceived racial discrimination and BMI in any sample, and no evidence of a relation between discrimination and healthy behavior among the males. However, correlational analyses revealed a positive prospective relation between discrimination and healthy behavior among all three groups of females; structural equation modeling indicated that this relation was stronger among women who were high in optimism. Conclusions: Perceived racial discrimination does not appear to be related to BMI among African Americans, but it is related to healthy behavior among Black females who are high in dispositional optimism. • Psychological mediators of exercise adherence among older adults in a
           group-based randomized trial.
    • Abstract: Objective: To examine the psychological mediators of exercise adherence among older adults in a group-based physical activity randomized controlled trial. Method: Older adults (≥65 years) were randomized to one of three conditions as part of the “GrOup-based physical Activity for oLder adults” (GOAL) randomized controlled trial. These included similar age same gender (SASG) and similar age mixed gender (SAMG) exercise programs that were informed by the tenets of self-categorization theory, and a “standard” mixed age mixed gender (MAMG) exercise program. Participants represented a subgroup (n = 483, Mage = 71.41 years) from the larger trial (n = 627) who completed measures of the trial’s putative psychological mediators (i.e., group cohesion and affective attitudes) over the course of the 24-week exercise programs. Results: Piecewise latent growth modeling revealed different trajectories between participants in the two intervention conditions (SASG, SAMG) when compared with the comparison MAMG condition with regard to perceptions of group cohesion and affective attitudes. Results of subsequent cross-lagged panel modeling revealed that better program adherence in the two intervention conditions, when compared with the referent MAMG condition, was mediated by perceptions of group cohesion. Conclusions: The findings provide insight into how the two intervention programs differentially strengthened perceptions of group cohesion and affective attitudes over time. Consistent with self-categorization theory, the results also shed light on the role of group cohesion, in particular, as a psychological mechanism of action to promote older adults’ exercise adherence behaviors. • Promotion of physical activity during weight loss maintenance: A
           randomized controlled trial.
    • Abstract: Objective: Behavioral weight loss (BWL) programs are not sufficiently effective at promoting high levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), despite the clear health benefits of exercise and the possibility that high levels of MVPA may improve long-term weight loss. This three-arm randomized controlled trial tested the hypotheses that 1) BWL interventions with an intensive focus on exercise would result in higher amounts of MVPA and greater long-term weight loss, compared to standard BWL, and 2) among interventions with an intensive focus on exercise, outcomes would be superior when skills for exercise promotion were taught from an acceptance-based theoretical framework (which fosters willingness to accept discomfort in the service of valued behaviors), versus a traditional behavioral approach. Method: Three hundred and twenty adults with overweight/obesity received group-based BWL for induction of weight loss (Months 1–6) and were randomized to receive one of three interventions for weight loss maintenance (Months 7–18): continued standard behavioral treatment (BT), behavioral treatment with an emphasis on exercise (BT + PA), or acceptance-based treatment with an emphasis on exercise (ABT + PA). Results: MVPA and percent weight loss did not significantly differ by condition at 12 or 18 months. Participants engaging in relatively higher levels of MVPA had greater long-term weight losses compared to participants engaging in lower levels of MVPA. Conclusions: Further clinical innovations are needed so that participants in BWL programs can more readily adopt and maintain the recommended amounts of MVPA. • Long-term association of parental warmth with depression and obesity:
           Mediation by conscientiousness.
    • Abstract: Objective: The current study examined the psychosocial processes related to the health outcomes of depression and obesity. Specifically, the mediating role of participant’s trait conscientiousness on the relation between early experiences of paternal/maternal warmth and later depressive symptoms/obesity across 20 years and how this relationship is moderated by age across adulthood. Method: The current study utilized a national longitudinal data set, Midlife in the United States. Participants (N = 2,257) completed a survey rating the warmth they received from their fathers and mothers as children at Time 1 (T1; Ages 25–75). Participants reported their trait conscientiousness 10 years later (Time 2; T2). Depressive symptoms and body mass index were collected 10 years later (Time 3; T3). A moderated mediation model was used to examine whether the effect of parental warmth on health outcomes was mediated by trait conscientiousness and moderated by age. Results: An indirect effect of maternal warmth on depressive symptoms and obesity, mediated by conscientiousness, was found. This effect is moderated by age such that the indirect effect is stronger in older adults. While paternal warmth did not have a significant indirect effect on either depressive symptoms or obesity, the effect was not significantly different from the maternal indirect effect. Conclusion: The study supported the role of trait conscientiousness in linking the effect of early parental warmth to later health outcomes. This study also found that the strength of the indirect effect of parental warmth through conscientiousness increases with age. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)

  • Standardized stress reduction interventions and blood pressure
habituation: Secondary results from a randomized controlled trial.
    • Abstract: Meta-analyses suggest a small association between cardiovascular responses to acute stressors and cardiovascular disease, but a recent review suggests that this effect may be underestimated due to insufficient consideration of individual differences in habituation to repeated stressors. Objective: The present article reports new analyses of a published randomized controlled trial comparing the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and a passive control condition on blood pressure habituation—a secondary outcome. Psychological mediators of intervention effects were examined. Method: Participants (138 healthy adults reporting moderate/high stress) were randomly assigned to 6-week MBSR, CBT, or a waitlist control. Analyses were conducted on 86 participants who subsequently completed stressful speech and mental arithmetic tasks during two posttreatment visits scheduled 48 hr apart. Blood pressure was measured −15, +0, +5, +10, +25, +35, and +60 min poststressor onset. Results: There were no between-condition differences in blood pressure habituation (all ps> .05). However, both MBSR and CBT led to increased perceived control over thoughts, F(2, 72) = 5.20, p = .008, and individuals who displayed a greater change in perceived control over thoughts also displayed greater habituation to the speech portion of the stressor, F(6, 799) = 2.32, p = .020. Results implied an indirect effect of stress reduction interventions on blood pressure habituation via change in perceived control over thoughts (b = −3.93, SE = 1.98, 95% CI: [−8.392, −0.701]). Conclusion: Stress reduction interventions that increase perceived control over thoughts may benefit cardiovascular health by promoting blood pressure habituation. • Daily support and negative control during a quit attempt in single-smoking
           couples.
    • Abstract: Objective: Research has shown a beneficial influence of partner support on smoking cessation. Previous studies mainly focused on support and neglected negative behaviors. Less is known about differences in support perceptions between partners. This study aimed to examine how supportive as well as negative control behaviors relate to smoking and relationship satisfaction in single-smoking couples during a quit attempt. Method: Smokers and their nonsmoking partners (n = 170 cohabiting couples) participated in an intensive longitudinal study over 21 days with end-of-day diaries. A dyadic score model was used, emphasizing couple levels and differences for the explanatory variables (i.e., support and negative control) and the outcome variables (smoking [for smokers only]; relationship satisfaction). Results: Smokers whose partner showed more supportive and less negative control behavior had a lower probability of smoking, and both partners had higher relationship satisfaction. On days with more supportive and less negative control behavior than usual, smokers had a lower probability of smoking and both partners had higher relationship satisfaction. For smokers who reported more support than their partner reported providing, the couples’ relationship satisfaction was higher and the smokers’ relationship satisfaction was higher than their partners’. Differences between received and provided support/control at the between-couple and daily level were unrelated to smoking. Conclusions: Support seems important during a quit attempt as it was related to a lower probability of smoking and higher relationship satisfaction in couples, while negative control behaviors should be avoided as they were associated with higher probability of smoking and lower relationship satisfaction. • A novel method for assessing design fidelity in web-based behavioral
           interventions.
    • Abstract: Objective: Delivery is one of the most common ways of assessing fidelity in behavioral interventions. However, there is a lack of research reporting on how well an intervention protocol reflects its proposed theoretical principles (design fidelity). This study presents a systematic method for assessing design fidelity and applies it to the eMotion web-based intervention targeting physical activity and depression. Method: The eMotion intervention comprises of 13 web-based modules, designed according to an underlying intervention map. An independent rater with expertise in behavior change coded the presence or absence of behavior change techniques (BCTs) in the content of eMotion. Results of coding were compared to the intervention designers’ a priori specification for interrater reliability. Results: After discussion, the independent rater and the intervention designer had a high agreement for the presence of BCTs relating to behavioral activation (AC1 = 0.91) with “demonstration of behavior” and “monitoring of emotional consequences” having the lowest agreement (AC1 < 0.4). There was also high agreement for the presence of BCTs targeting physical activity (AC1 = 0.88) with “demonstration of behavior” and “monitoring of emotional consequences” having the lowest agreement (AC1 < 0.4). The eMotion description was then amended to align the interrater agreement. Conclusions: This study presents a novel method for assessing design fidelity. Developers of behavioral (and other multicomponent) interventions are encouraged to develop and refine this method and assess design fidelity in future interventions to ensure BCTs are operationalized as intended.
