  • La razionalità weberiana come schema interpretativo: processi di
           razionalizzazione e dinamiche contemporanee

    • Authors: Federico Sofritti
      Pages: 9 - 20
Abstract: This paper addresses the concepts of rationality and rationalization in Max Weber. Drawing on the main analyses of Weber’s works carried out from the Seventies of the XX century, the purpose of the paper is to conceptualize a nuanced understanding of rationality as a result of manifold processes of rationalization in order to identify useful points that help to deepen better contemporary issues. In particular, the origins and criticalities of the process of rationalization will be addressed to define rationality as a multifaceted concept. Western rationality does not represent neither the only extant rationality nor the “one best way” of modernization; rather, it is just one of the different forms of rationality, resulting from complex and contradictory processes of objectification. Drawing on the idea of Weber’s rationalization as an interpretive scheme, it is possible to better understand two social specific dynamics: the co-existence of multiple forms of modernity; the limitations of modern science during the Covid-19 emergency.

  • Al tempo del coronavirus. Dalla specializzazione scientifica al potere
           carismatico di gruppo

    • Authors: Paolo Giovannini
      Pages: 21 - 27
Abstract: The article examines the management of the current pandemic crisis, focusing on the specific form taken by the relationship between political power and expert knowledge in their mutual interdependence. This relationship is read through the lens of the Weberianconcept of charisma and, mores pecifically – arguing for a common ground between Weber’s and Norbert Elias’ thinking on this issue - of group charisma. This concept proves to be a key analytical tool for understanding the current balances of power and their possible developments.

  • Max Weber e la "questione razziale"

    • Authors: Patrizia Laurano
      Pages: 29 - 40
Abstract: This paper analyzes one less important topic Weberian thought (especially in the Italian studies): the concepts of “ethnicity” and “race”. In particular, the essay focuses the problem of black Americans, around which Weber reflected starting from the information and experiences personally lived during his trip to the United States in 1904, invited by the Congress of Arts and Sciences of the Universal Exposition of St. Louis. The German scholar has the opportunity to know directly US society, to travel the South of the country, to discuss with members of the African American community. All this contributes to moving Weber away from the initial youthful positions - when the biological element of "race" is evident - to an analysis of the social and cultural implications of "ethnic community", in which, rather than the blood, "ethnic honor" is important. According to Weber, the only way to bring about a change in racial and ethnic relations is a charismatic authority, empowered to give orders that are typically obeyed (Weber, 1947). If, through the process of routinization, the charismatic authority is systematically transformed into rational authority, ethnicity can disappear; while if it is routinized in a traditional order, ethnicity can be further highlighted.

  • On Max Weber and Ethnicity in Times of Intellectual Decolonization

    • Authors: Elke Winter
      Pages: 41 - 52
Abstract: The past few years have seen a rise in attempts to decolonize curricula, pedagogies, classrooms and knowledge production. In this paper, I provided a six-step argument for reading and teaching Weber – among other scholarly writings – in times of intellectual decolonization. I argue that (1) Weber’s calls for scientific rigour and the prevalence of social causality over biological, culturalist or other essentialist interpretations, as well as (2) his uncovering of racist ideology embedded in social institutions are more relevant than ever. I then follow Weber in (3) theorizing the emergence of ethnic feelings of communalization as the outcome of unequal power relations tied to migration, conquest, and colonization. (4) This relationship of domination/subordination is conducive to a differential sense of self and dignity with members of majority and minority populations. (5) Based on Weber’s epistemology, these diverse “standpoints” need to be included into the curriculum as they contribute valuable pieces to the overarching puzzle of human knowledge. (6) Weber’s call for a strict separation of science and politics, however, prohibits political activism and “professorial prophecy” in the lecture hall or classroom. For Weber, the professor should not teach students what they should do, only what they may want to do.

  • Max Weber e le peripezie della democrazia

    • Authors: Furio Ferraresi
      Pages: 53 - 63
Abstract: The essay analyses Max Weber’s thinking on democracy in both his theoretical and political writings. Weber examines democracy in relation to the themes of charismatic power and its transformation in an anti-authoritarian sense, as well as in relation to the theme of the minimisation of power and the problematic relationship with social democratisation and bureaucratisation. If democracy was historically born as an attempt to minimise the authoritarian power of command and to prevent the formation of a separate administration (direct democracy), it paradoxically ends up, in the so-called ‘mass democracies’, by becoming an instrument of centralisation of political command in a leader legitimised by popular recognition that assumes plebiscitary forms. A democracy, therefore, emptied of value content and reduced to a technique of shaping the democratic masses according to the head/apparatus model typical of modern bureaucratic enterprise.

  • Ragionare per idealtipi Comprendere con Weber lo Stato contemporaneo in
           Marocco… e altrove

    • Authors: Béatrice Hibou, Mohamed Tozy
      Pages: 65 - 83
Abstract: The article departs from a specific case study: the response of Moroccan state institutions to the public health needs caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Its aim is to show the interest of reasoning with idealtype: it overcomes analyses marked by forms of exoticism and exceptionalism, it prevents to read the distinctive methods used by the Moroccan authorities as “dysfunctions” or “archaisms”.

  • Tra pragma della violenza e redenzione del mondo. Forme di violenza
           rivoluzionaria in Max Weber

    • Authors: Camilla Emmenegger
      Pages: 85 - 100
Abstract: Weber refers to violence as the specific means of politics: as such it plays an important role in the state-building process. However it is possible to find in Weber’s work some references to other forms of violence, i.e. forms of revolutionary violence. They emerge at the points of contact and conflict between ethics and politics. In particular, they arise when the “pragma of violence” is no longer recognized as a permanent worldly quality and when the strive for world’s redemption proper to religious ethics finds in violence its form of expression. The aim of this paper is to identify four forms of revolutionary violence – anomic, ascetic, testimonial and ultimate ends violence – and, by outlining their specific features, to enrich the weberian framework on violence, thereby showing the variety of subjective pathways that are at the origin of a violent act.

  • L’erotica tiranna. Weber, Monte Verità e la Considerazione
           intermedia

    • Authors: Massimo Palma
      Pages: 101 - 112
Abstract: The article faces a short period of time in Max Weber’s life before and during the Great War. In 1913 Max Weber found himself spending more than some days in the vegetarian and anarchist community of Monte Verità, in Italian Switzerland. This meant a chance for empirical observations of life forms imbued with free love and hints of counterculture. While his personal life went through changes, due to both the war and new emotional ties, in the Intermediate Reflections he came to consider the role of eroticism in the spheres of life, as a way to organize the world, or to refuse it. Further on, in the famous Science as Vocation conference, in his attempt to deal with the normative-axiological domain, as noticed by E. R. Curtius, the erotic sphere will become a model, through its ‘failed relationship’ in the way values are thought and believed in by subjects.

  • L'eredità di Norbert Elias nella sociologia dello sport

    • Authors: Luca Bifulco
      Pages: 129 - 143
Abstract: The paper aims to analyse Norbert Elias’ legacy in the sociology of sport, marked by the centrality of figurational theory in the tradition of this field of study. The typical features of this approach, also applied to sport analysis, are: the focus on figurations, that is on the networks of interdependence in the structuring of social phenomena; the idea of the processual character of social reality; the idea that social processes are the effect of the interconnection of unintentional actions; the importance of the power differential. On this theoretical basis Elias and his followers explore the relationship between civilization and sportization as fundamental ingredients of the definition of modern society and sports, analyse the role of sport as a site of emotional expression and harmless excitement in a social reality based on the routine control of emotions, seek in the study of hooliganism confirmation of the validity of the basic assumptions of figurational theory. A theory that has produced a wide and fervent debate in the scientific community.

  • Scontro di civiltà e multiple modernities: le eredità di Huntington e
Eisenstadt tra religioni, modernità e secolarizzazione

    • Authors: Ilaria Biano
      Pages: 145 - 157
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to suggest a link between, on the one hand, the work of Samuel P. Huntington and of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt and, on the other hand, some recent trends in the reflection on global relations and the role of religions and civilizations. The original concepts of Clash of civilizations and Multiple modernities have, indeed, originated very different ways of thinking the nature and even the possibility of some kind of relation between religions and cultures. Specifically, it’s of particular interest the nexus that can be traced between this two approaches and two different developments of secularization theory: desecularization and the postsecular. A structural coherence between, on the one hand, conceptions of civilization derived from Huntington and a desecularization approach and, on the other hand, the multiple modernites approach to civilizations and the postsecular, can be clearly seen. And different trajectories, derived from this approaches, emerge in the contemporary debates on the future of global society between conflict and dialogue.
