  • The Elderly as Additional Workers on the Thai Labor Market

    • Authors: Nongnuch Soonthornchawakan
      Pages: 15 - 29
Abstract: This paper extends the life cycle labor supply model of individual to explain the impact of the recession on all members of extended family, which includes both working-age worker and the elderly. Model of family joint utility maximization suggests that the reduction of family’s income due to the labor earnings loss of the breadwinner will cause the increase in the work of the elderly in the extended family, such as parents in retirement age. The paper finds an increase in the labor force participation rate and employment rate of the elderly in Thailand during the economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic where unemployment and underemployment of young and prime age workers increase. Due to the fact that many Thai elderly people rely on income from their children, therefore these evidences imply that some elderly people respond to job and income losses of children by adjusting the labor supply as additional workers on the labor market. Moreover, the elderly workers are affected by this crisis in terms of unemployment as well. Hence, the working situation of elderly workers should be more concerned.

  • Suicide News Reporting in the Thai Social Context: Decoding Communications
           through Media in Digital Era

    • Authors: Nitida Sangsingkeo
      Pages: 42 - 57
Abstract: The study of suicide news in the social context of Thailand was examined through media in digital era. Qualitative research was done with data obtained by textual analysis and in-depth interviews. The objectives were to 1) formulate a set of significance for suicide as represented on digital media and to 2) define challenges in constructing suicide prevention mechanisms in Thailand. Results were that suicide had innovative force, impacting the public, especially during Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic life challenges, changes, and crises. Media representations of suicide reflected mixed images redolent of myth, stereotype, and conveying abnormality through multiple discourses. This situation requires revisiting journalistic principles and practices for accuracy, objectivity, and ideology as key professional ingredients. Emerging alternative images related to suicide protection and preventions may build a better public understanding of the causes of suicide. The online community serves as a liberated space for sharing suicidal emotions and experiences to create new narratives and allow the subject to be widely discussed. These findings suggest that the government should seek collaboration among all sectors and facilitate policy co-creator changes in public suicide discourse.

  • The Service Strategies of Shariah-Compliant Hotel in Hat Yai District,
           Songkhla Province

    • Authors: Parichat Thudam
      Pages: 121 - 132
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to study the characteristics of shariah-compliant hotel and the service strategies of shariah-compliant hotel in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. The study was conducted using qualitative research. Data was collected by interviewing hotel business entrepreneurs and Islamic leaders. The results of the study revealed that hotel services according to Shariah principles in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province can be classified into 2 types, namely 1) partially shariah-compliant hotel and 2) fully shariah-compliant hotel. Entrepreneurs employ unique service differentiation strategies and create shariah hospitality awareness by naming hotels in muslim names and using halal kitchen certification standards to make their customers trust. In terms of public relations strategies, entrepreneurs use advertising channels through social media such as Facebook, Line and and word-of-mouth referrals of customers. The study of effect of shariah-based services on hotel business operations in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province found that shariah-based services had a beneficial effect on the business, causing more muslim customers to use the service and have increased income, especially the revenue from the seminar. However, Shariah hotel services do not affect hotel room rates. Room rates are in accordance with 1-5 star hotel tourism accommodation standards. This is because hotels according to shariah principles are classified as alternative hotels which the customer will decide to choose to stay for the comfort of the service received that is in accordance with the religious principles. The problem that hotels encountered in providing shariah services was some customers did not understand that some services are not available in Shariah-compliant hotels.
