  • Whispers of Creepy Gothic in the Story of Evin Sahibi

    • Authors: Derya KILIÇKAYA
Abstract: Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, who contributed to the field of horror literature with the story of “Evin Sahibi,” in a sense embodied the terrible thoughts in this story. It is seen that gothic images/elements of fear are also used in the story, which is a reflection of fear. The aforementioned story was read from a gothic point of view for the formation of this article. The gothic elements that emerged as a result of this reading were examined under six headings and it was tried to be understood how Tanpınar spread these elements in his work. Tanpınar gives direction to gothic literature by using horror elements. It is interesting that in Turkish literature, such use of gothic elements by Tanpınar between frightening landscapes and a suffocating atmosphere, but the scenes that can be seen in horror movies take place in the story. The aim of the article is to evaluate the work, which can be counted among the horror stories, around gothic motifs.

  • GENDER AND HUMOUR IN P.G. WODEHOUSE’S PEARLS, GIRLS AND MONTY BODKIN
           AND THE CAT-NAPPERS

    • Authors: Zerrin EREN
Abstract: The scholars preoccupied with humor have tried to explain what makes a situation or a work of art humorous. Consequently, various theories of humor have come into being. Of these theories, “the incongruity theory” is widely accepted in humor studies. P.G. Wodehouse, one of the leading authors of Britain, is famous for his humorous novels. This study argues that in Wodehouse’s Pearls, Girls and Monty Bodkin (1972) and The Cat-Nappers, first published in England under the title Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen in 1974, humor stems from the incongruity between the personality traits of the characters and gender stereotypes dominant in society, and accordingly, in the gender schemas of the readers. This article displays that while the male characters do not exhibit socially accepted masculine traits, most of the female characters have masculine traits. Using allusions, Wodehouse emphasizes the masculine traits of his female characters in these novels. The study concludes that the incongruity between the personality traits of the characters in these novels and the stereotypes in the gender schema of the readers may cause laughter.

  • The Approach of Modernity Poetry and Its Criticism to the Qur’anic
           Text: Adonis as a Model

    • Authors: Ahmet ONUR
Abstract: The Holy Qur’an constituted a unique phenomenon that did not cease to influence both those who believed in it and those who rejected it from ancient times until the present day. This influence did not stop with Muslim poets but extended to include Christian poets as well. This research attempts to approach the modernity poetry and its criticism of the Qur’anic text through Adonis’ poems and criticism, and he is one of the most prominent theorists of modern poetry and its criticism. Influenced by western thought and literature, he tried to take a new approach to Arabic poetry. But it is a western product that does not bring it closer to Arabic poetry other than the language. And for thought and vision, it belongs to the European West, not the Islamic East, we deal with Adonis’ approach to the language of the Qur’anic text, which he admired and tried to benefit from despite his rejection of the religious implications called for by the Holy Qur’an, The positive aspect of Adonis’ dealing with the Qur’anic text was limited only to the promotion of its new unique language. On the other hand, we saw his rejection of religion in the life of society, his rebellion against God the Creator, and his adoption of an atheistic mysticism that does not recognize religion. In all of this, he is trying to transcend the sacred and make himself a new deity capable of change and preaching a poetic religion that will replace the religion we believe in.

  • Ağlayan Dağ Susan Nehir in the Light of Ecofeminism

    • Authors: Hatice BAKANLAR MUTLU
Abstract: Ayşegül Devecioğlu’s Ağlayan Dağ Susan Nehir focuses on gypsies’ lives and their struggle of existence. In this novel, which is full of metafictional elements, the protagonist is a gypsy woman called Naciye Abla, and her stories are re-narrated by the unnamed narrator. Given that the novel is centred on a gypsy woman’s life with reference to some recent political developments about gypsies, it is possible to analyse this novel focusing on identity issues. However, in this study, the novel is read as the narrator’s quest for the truth in Naciye Abla’s stories. This study claims that the main conflict in the novel stems from the fact/fiction binary opposition, which is supported by the culture/nature, mind/emotion, and man/woman oppositions. This study argues that the author attempts to dismantle these binary oppositions. From this perspective, it is deemed appropriate to read the novel in the light of ecofeminism as the latter also rejects binary oppositions. The purpose of the study is to reveal how the writer criticizes the hierarchical dualist thought system which is based on the superiority of reason.

University Students in Terms of Personality Traits

    • Authors: Büşra ASLAN CEVHEROĞLU; Ebru KARAKAŞ, Fatma Nur CAN, Esma ELMALI
Abstract: Romantic relationships have a higher importance in young adulthood, and many factors are effective in starting and maintaining these relationships. Romantic jealousy is one of these factors that also affect satisfaction and harmony in the relationship. The aim of the present study is to examine the methods of coping with jealousy of university students in terms of personality traits. The sample of the study consists of 223 university students between the ages of 18 and 27, of which 125 are female (56.1%) and 98 are male (43.9%). In the present study, “Big Five Personality Inventory” and “Communicative Responses to Jealousy Scale” were used. Correlation analysis was performed and regression analysis was applied to the variables that were found to be significant. As a result of the regression analysis, it was seen that neurotic personality trait predicted constructive communication and destructive-avoidant communication styles, while openness and mildness personality traits predicted opponent-oriented communication style. The research findings were examined and discussed in light of literature research.

  • A Case Study of Spatial Analysis of Accessibility to State Schools with
Geographic Information Systems: The City of Rize

    • Authors: Mehmet DENİZ; Kazım KAZDAL, Mustafa TOPUZ
Abstract: A planned urbanization has not been possible in Turkey since the 1950s due to the increase in migration from rural to urban areas and economic and political instability. Urban road network, location of public buildings, service areas, urban green space, etc., urban function areas could not develop in a planned manner due to unplanned urbanization in Rize. Especially when the issue of where the public buildings should be built is neglected, inequalities of opportunity and accessibility problems occur from time to time in the services provided in public buildings. The subject of this study is the determination of the compliance of the places of the schools, where an important public service is provided, with the regulations. In the research, it is aimed to describe the accessibility situation based on the walking distances recommended by the Spatial Plans Production Regulation from the residences in the city of Rize to public schools with the help of spatial analysis supported by Geographic Information Systems. Network analysis was applied to the data collected in the study with ArcGIS 10.2 software. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that there were accessibility problems at all education levels. The study provides a practical contribution to the literature in terms of producing information for future plans by revealing that there is an access problem in the neighborhoods and schools in the city of Rize.

    • Authors: Moldir İLGİSHEVA
Abstract: Meshur Jusip made a great contribution to various parts of science, such as Kazakh literature, civilization history, and ethnography, and left a rich legacy to the next generation arising from his pen. The poet Meshur Jusip was able to put forward meaningful ideas based on his life experience and instinct. The Sufi defended Islamic civilization and its spiritual values and saw reason and science as a means for people to know Allah (s.w.t). It is known that the eye of the heart of the Awliya Meshur Jusip, who believes that Allah (s.w.t) is the only one and that our Prophet (pbuh) is the messenger of Allah, was open. The poet Meshur Jusip Kopeyulı combined scientific and religious knowledge in his works and contributed to the correct understanding and spread of Islam in Kazakh lands.            Pandemic from Sociological Perspective: A Qualitative Study on the Erzurum
           Scale

    • Authors: Cengiz KILIÇ; Süleyman DUMAN
Abstract: In today’s societies, in parallel with both national and international development, the individual and all his needs have central importance. The individual has a central position in social, economic, political systems and government programs. At the point of meeting the needs of the citizens, which is a requirement of being a social state, states strengthen the citizen–state bond by doing important work in ordinary and extraordinary periods. In this context, various measures have been taken by the Presidency and the Government to control the spread of the epidemic in the face of the COVID-19 epidemic disease, and one of the measures taken is to ensure that our citizens over the age of 65 and our citizens who are chronically ill but have no one to look after the social state within the scope of the curfew. • Expressionist Genesis in Russian Literature

    • Authors: Eda H. TAN METREŞ
Abstract: There is no art movement that can be separated from the social conditions of the age and the dominant understanding of art. Expressionism, one of the active art movements of the 20th century and mainly shaped by Germany and Austria, also emerged as a reaction to the events that took place at the border of the century. While these developments point to the World War I in Germany, they correspond to the wars and revolutionary mobilization process that took place between 1905 and 1917 in Russia. At this point, expressionism, which is a part of a historical period, affects many areas in the intellectual field; it directs not only poetry and painting but also many disciplines such as prose, theater, music, and architecture. However, unlike German expressionism, which took place largely in the visual arts, the starting point of this movement in Russia is literature—in the genre of prose and dramaturgy. The first scientific transmission of expressionism in Russia is in the form of articles or criticisms of texts translated from German. The emergence of expressionism in Russia is dated simultaneously with the works titled “The Wall, 1901” and “The Red Laugh, 1904” by Leonid Andreyev. In this study, the expressionist worldview, which perceives the world as an environment of chaos and the individual as a person silenced and suppressed by this chaos, has been examined from a historical perspective, in particular Russian literature. The development process of expressionism in Russian literature has been revealed in the example of approaches and works that deal with people in the intellectual intensity of the 20th century.

  • Supernatural Elements and Social Criticism in Charles Dickens’s The
           Chimes

    • Authors: Sercan ÖZTEKİN
Abstract: Charles Dickens incorporates supernatural elements in his realistic works. He, therefore, refers to opposite religious and scientific explanations for the existence of unearthly phenomena that prevailed in the Victorian period. However, in The Chimes, one of his ghost stories, he focuses on scientific attitudes to supernatural beings rather than conventional views. He generally relates the main character’s mind and uncanny visions to social problems and inequality which traumatize underprivileged citizens. This study examines the work in relation to the depiction of the supernatural. After a brief discussion of the Victorian attitudes to the eerie and the unknown, it discusses the ways in which Dickens employs supernatural figures, blending them with social criticism.

  • A Turning Point in the Golden Horde State: Emir Nogai

    • Authors: Merve SÜRÜCÜ
Abstract: The Golden Horde State, which was established in the Deşt-i Kipchak geography in the 13th century, gained an effective position in this region because of successful inns from the first times. However, over time, it is seen that the power in the state administration passed from the legal khans to Emir Nogai, who was a division chief. Although Emir Nogai was a descendant of Chinggis Khan, he had no right to be the rightful heir to the throne because he was born from a concubine. However, Emir Nogai, who became more present in the political scene especially after the death of Mengü Timur Han, began to act as an inn during the Tuda Mengü, Tula Buka, and Tokta periods. In this process, he commanded an important military power as well as the vast lands he owned. Emir Nogai extended his sphere of influence to the sovereignty of other states in the region, thanks to the authority he acquired over time. Thus, Emir Nogai made his influence felt not only in the Golden Horde but also in the Byzantine, Balkans, and Russian affairs. This influence of Nogai gradually diminished after 1300 when he was killed by Tokta Khan and soon disappeared.

  • Horse Riding In Erzurum, As A New Recreation Activity

    • Authors: Tolga KORKUSUZ
Abstract: Horses are considered important in many cultures. When the similar characteristics of people living in different cultural regions are evaluated, it will be seen that horses occupy a similar position in many cultures. Especially in periods when there are no motor vehicles, horses are almost the companions of humanity. Although the importance of horses has decreased compared to the past, it has become functionally differentiated. It is now seen that horses are used for different purposes such as recreation. Erzurum city, which is one of the places where horses are used extensively for recreation, is located in the Erzurum-Kars Section of the Eastern Anatolia Region. Erzurum, which has recreational activities in many areas from shopping to skiing, also hosts recreational activities that have shown new development in recent years. Horse riding, which has developed in the last 10 years, is considered one of the most important recreational activities. While evaluating the horse riding activities of the city of Erzurum, data were collected through interviews. The data obtained were evaluated and the recreational value of the city in the field of horse riding was tried to be revealed. In this respect, it has been concluded that the facilities opened in the city in recent years have emerged especially due to the people affected by the historical TV series, and then various suggestions have been made.

  • Turkish Archery as a Strategic Element in the Foundation Period of the
           Ottoman Empire (1284–1396)

    • Authors: Galip ÇAĞ
Abstract: Recently, growing interest in Turkish traditional archery in Turkey has supported research in the field. Accordingly, the general studies carried out in the past have begun to be detailed. Today, we have reached a substantial amount, both by transferring primary sources to today’s Turkish and by approaching archery in the context of different disciplines. Despite this, especially in terms of military history, the processes of Turkish archery could not be clarified clearly due to probability and resource constraints. As such, more practical issues came to the center of Turkish archery research. The era of the foundation of the Ottoman Empire has now been evaluated from many angles. Although there are issues that have been revealed, it is obvious that there are still issues that remain in the dark. More recently, Prof. Dr. Even the discussions about the history of 1302, which İnalcık put forward about the establishment, did not come to an end. It seems that new sources and perspectives will continue to be discussed. This study looked at the issue of the foundation of the Ottoman Empire in terms of Turkish archery. Accordingly, one aspect of the establishment was tried to be explained by emphasizing the strategic advantages provided by Turkish archery. The overlooked points of previous research on the establishment and period sources were also used to support this thesis. In this sense, it is hoped that the study will offer a new perspective both in terms of the founding era and traditional Turkish archery.

  • Application of Greimas’ Actant Model to a Poem Example: Goethe
           Erlkönig

    • Authors: Özge Sinem İMRAĞ
Abstract: The world is made up of systems of signs and a sign consists of 2 sides: content and expression. The structuralists have been particularly concerned with the expression side of sign, and its content side has not been dealt with as much. But the two sides of sign are closely related to each other. The actantial model, developed by Greimas, helps in this point because in this model the meaning of the figures is in the foreground. The aim of this study is to determine how the actantial model developed by Greimas works in a poem. The poem that was selected for analysis is “Erlkönig” by Goethe. Usually, no event is told in poems. But in this poem, something is told, because it is a ballad, namely a narrative poem. This fact simplifies the analysis process. Thereby relationships between elements of the text are reconstructed. With this aim, the actantial model by A. J. Greimas is presented later and the connections between elements of the poem will be determined in order to analyze the poem according to this model.
