  • Citizen Social Scientists’ Observations on Complex Tasks Match Trained
           Research Assistants’, Suggesting Lived Experiences are Valuable in Data
           Collection

    • Abstract: Can citizen scientists reliably and meaningfully observe and record complex social phenomena' To explore this question in more detail, we recruited 162 diverse citizen scientists to identify publicly located structural markers of that exclude the elderly, women, large-bodied people, and non-white people in Phoenix, Arizona. The quality of observations by citizen scientists was assessed against data collected on the same observational task by (1) three professional social scientists with expertise on discrimination and (2) 33 trained research assistants. We found that the performance of citizen social scientists is similar to that of trained research assistants, even while both performed very differently from professional social scientists. The main finding is that citizen social scientists who had self-reported with specific social categories relevant to the social exclusions were roughly equal observers to those who did not identify as belonging to those categories, an unexpected finding. Likewise, citizen social scientists who reported experiences of discrimination were not more likely to observe more social exclusions or discrimination in public places than those who did not report such experiences. One key implication is that detailed input from volunteers in how they approach social science tasks could illuminate how social categories (like age or gender) matter for recruitment and performance in citizen social science research.   • Maggot Menageries: High School Student Contributions to Medicinal Maggot
           Production in Compromised Healthcare Settings

    • Abstract: This case study describes how high school students can participate in research, development, and testing of real-life solutions for society’s most intractable problems. In modern warfare, civilians make up most of the casualties, and conflict-affected communities are often isolated and have only limited access to healthcare. Most surviving casualties have limb wounds from injury or surgery, and many of these become infected and require long-term treatment or amputation. In 2020, MedMagLabs and the Queensland Virtual STEM Academy partnered to engage high school students to co-develop and test methods and training resources that empower people in conflict-affected communities to produce medicinal maggots for highly efficacious and affordable wound care. Maggot therapy is the treatment of wounds with living fly larvae to remove dead tissue, to control infection, and to promote wound healing. As opposed to most citizen science, which mainly focuses on data collection and/or educational and awareness-raising outcomes, this project focused on the co-creation of knowledge and the delivery of tangible research outcomes. The measure of its success was the development of end-user friendly medicinal maggot production methods and training resources. The study explains how citizen scientists and researchers collaborated with one another to achieve this objective. Project execution was largely in line with The Ten Principles of Citizen Science. Further review of project outcomes and self-reflection by the research team highlight important lessons for such collaborative studies, which have been summarised in five recommendations specifically relating to research collaborations with schools and student citizen scientists.   • Citizens in the Lab: Performance and Validation of eDNA Results

    • Abstract: Citizen Science has traditionally been applied in biodiversity monitoring, as the approach holds the potential for conducting large-scale data collections. However, involving citizens in more than data collection is still in its infancy. In this paper, we present the results of an ongoing citizen science project that expands the partnership between citizens and researchers by involving citizens in several parts of the scientific process. In the project, citizens first conduct sampling in the field, followed by analysis of their samples in our university laboratory. Finally, participants are interpreting the results of the laboratory analyses in collaboration with the researcher. The project aims to evaluate the presence of marine animals by monitoring the DNA left behind by the organisms in the environment (eDNA), using samples from the years 2017 and 2018. We found that citizens can carry out eDNA surveillance with an average success rate of 72% (where the success rate is defined as passing both the negative and positive control test) and that their data is of similar quality as a trained researcher and concur with known species distributions. Engaging and training citizen scientists in advanced laboratory analysis, such as the monitoring of eDNA in water samples, has promising applications for large-scale national monitoring of marine species that can be used in governmental mapping and monitoring efforts.   • Evaluation of the Spatial Biases and Sample Size of a Statewide Citizen
           Science Project

    • Abstract: Although quality control for accuracy is increasingly common in citizen science projects, there is still a risk that spatial biases of opportunistic data could affect results, especially if sample size is low. Here we evaluate how well the sampling locations of North Carolina’s Candid Critters citizen science camera trapping project represented available land cover types in the state and whether the sample size (4,295 sites) was sufficient to estimate ecological parameters (i.e., species occupancy) with low bias and error. Although most sampling was opportunistic, we used a “Plan, Encourage, Supplement” approach to improve our spatial coverage. We assessed potential biases by comparing seven dimensions of habitat (i.e., land cover, elevation, road density, etc.) sampled by camera traps with those available in the state, using a minimum sample threshold approach, and found that the variation of habitat across the state was sufficiently sampled. At the ecoregion level we sampled 99.2% (±0.01) of the variation of potential habitat “adequately” and 96.4% (±0.03) “very adequately.” Supplemental sampling by staff helped meet sampling adequacy for 6.8% of ecoregion-habitat classes, especially in less populated parts of the state. Compared with results from the full data set, the relative bias and error with subsets of the data dropped below 10% relatively quickly with increasing sample size for estimates of occupancy, suggesting that results estimated with the full sample are robust, although the precision of particular ecological relationships were more variable. These analyses show that opportunistic sampling can be representative of large areas if sample size is high enough and that a priori sampling goals can help improve coverage by encouraging volunteers to sample in certain places or through supplemental data collection by staff.   • Using Citizen Science to Incorporate Research into Introductory Biology
           Courses at Multiple Universities

    • Abstract: Although participation in citizen science has been hypothesized to have many educational benefits for undergraduates, little work has been published on this topic. We asked whether biology content knowledge and increased undergraduate engagement could be attained through involvement in citizen science. Across three universities, we included Caterpillars Count! as a research experience in introductory biology courses. This citizen science project measures seasonal variation in the abundance of arthropods on the foliage of trees and shrubs. Undergraduate students learned to survey plants for arthropods, add their observations to a large dataset, and use this national dataset to address questions. Each institution chose to emphasize slightly different content from the project and spent different amounts of time on it in class. Over five semesters, more than 1,200 students participated in a pre- and post-assessment of knowledge related to citizen science, ecology, and the nature and process of science. A subset of students also provided written reflections. Students at all three institutions showed significant knowledge gains. The topics showing the largest gains across institutions were most related to the citizen science project, including concepts related to arthropod identification and a proper understanding of what citizen science is. These results support the use of citizen science in introductory courses to engage students, to improve learning, and to increase students’ spirit of discovery.   • The Roles and Value of Citizen Science: Perceptions of Professional
           Educators Enrolled on a Postgraduate Course

    • Abstract: Recent findings regarding learning in Citizen Science (CS) have led to an increase in CS project popularity in formal education classrooms. However, there has been little discussion of educators’ initial views on CS. This study examined the perceptions of professional educators enrolled on a postgraduate course in relation to expertise and data quality in CS and to how CS can enhance learning. Collected data comprised comments on the FutureLearn platform made by 164 educators, over two years, after they became involved in CS activities while studying. Findings showed that, overall, educators recognise the power of CS for learning, but are sceptical about the role of experts and the quality of data gathered in this way. Further results highlighted the different motivations educators have for participating in CS (compared with other volunteers) and their need to frame learning that takes place through CS using learning theories and models. The findings of this study have considerable implications for research into designing training activities that introduce educators to CS in classroom settings and support their role as intermediaries of CS.   • Creating Study-Specific Tools to Increase Community and Student Engagement

    • Abstract: The Boulder Apple Tree Project (BATP) at the University of Colorado agglomerates ecological, historical, and genetic information regarding apple trees in Boulder County, Colorado with the assistance of community members, undergraduates, and researchers. Our goal is to map and measure historic apple trees in Boulder to find the varieties that were planted as part of Boulder’s unique apple industry in the early 1900s. These trees are of interest to historians, horticulturalists, cider makers, and ecologists wishing to preserve heritage varieties and to better understand the ecology of urban apples. Combining the efforts of the campus community with the contributions of community members has allowed us to locate and measure more than 700 individual trees in the past four years, which are displayed in the interactive map showing locations and morphological measures of each tree. Harnessing this interest in local apple trees has allowed the project to provide educational opportunities to the community and undergraduates regarding the services that urban trees provide. Undergraduate computer science students built the interactive map to display tree locations and a mobile phone app designed for collecting and visualizing data in real time. These digital products will allow the broader population to engage in locally relevant research. This paper is a case study that focuses on curricular and extracurricular engagement of undergraduate students, application design, and the contributions of these efforts to the scientific community.   • Cultivating Bioliteracy, Biodiscovery, Data Literacy, and Ecological
           Monitoring in Undergraduate Courses with iNaturalist

    • Abstract: iNaturalist is a large and growing open-source online platform connecting a global community of users to the natural world and to each other. iNaturalist makes it simple for anyone to share observations, get identifications, and make identifications of any species. We demonstrate how iNaturalist can connect students to nature in undergraduate courses, simultaneously contributing to biodiversity knowledge. Our three case studies use iNaturalist to improve student bioliteracy (awareness and knowledge of biodiversity), to engage them in biodiscovery (discovering undocumented biodiversity occurrences, behaviors, and interactions), to introduce students to systematic ecological sampling (documenting biodiversity patterns and trends), and to improve their data literacy (by depositing and accessing open biodiversity data and by performing analyses). Included are examples from a variety of contexts—a required general science course, introductory courses for science majors, and more specialized electives. We discuss the rationale for iNaturalist inclusion, how iNaturalist inspires students and complements courses, and outputs of our students’ iNaturalist use. Introducing students to tools such as iNaturalist helps build the next generation of bioliterate and biocurious citizens and scientists, fluent in open collaborative research and learning. With wider uptake and coordination, iNaturalist has potential to connect undergraduate ecology courses to form a distributed virtual global biodiversity observatory.   • Useful Biodiversity Data Were Obtained by Novice Observers Using
           iNaturalist During College Orientation Retreats

    • Abstract: Citizen scientist platforms such as eBird and iNaturalist are dramatically increasing the biodiversity data available for scientific research. Questions remain about the validity of data collected by people with undefined credentials. However, few studies have examined the data quality of citizen science studies in detail. As part of an autumn orientation program, the Honors College at UMass Boston invited incoming students for a retreat on Thompson Island in Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. One of their activities was a three-hour bioblitz using iNaturalist. We reviewed data collected from three autumn orientations (2017–2019) to evaluate the quality of the data and to examine the hypothesis that first-time users can contribute useful biodiversity observations. The students collected more than 2,000 observations and uploaded more than 5,700 photographs, mostly of plants (about 50%) and animals (40%). Approximately 50% of the observations became Research Grade by iNaturalist criteria. Errors in GPS data (ca 1–4%) did not always place observations automatically in the project. First-time users, presumably because they are digital natives and have experience with cell phone cameras, quickly master the basics of iNaturalist. We conclude that students using the iNaturalist platform, with a crowd-sourced ID process, produce data that are useful for a variety of biodiversity studies.
