  • Arte e ideas sobre Naturaleza/ Art and ideas about Nature

    • Authors: Alejandro Jaime Carbonel
      Pages: 4 - 22
Abstract This essay reflects on the different conceptual perspectives of what we understand by Nature and how they shape our reality and our collective tasks. This reflection starts from the artistic field and then incorporates aspects of political ecology in the Human / Nature dialectic, emphasizing the common points and the intersections that we consider interesting. We take three examples in the history of recent art where we identify the conceptual problems around the configuration of the idea of the natural. First, we will develop aspects of the intersection between art and science in encyclopedic projects and the impact of cartography as the image that embodies this intersection. The second example presents a renewed look towards the natural with the entropic landscape of Robert Smithson. The third example, the artwork of Stelarc, reconfigures the Natural before the technological impact of human development. These references serve to illustrate and develop the debate of contemporary ideas about the cultural construction of Nature through art and how this debate takes shape and is disseminated through political channels that share or resist the programs of power for the permanent configuration of the representations of the world.

enfoques alternativos'/ Narratives of the Environmental Films in
Buenos Aires: Expert’s Speeches or Alternative Approaches'

    • Authors: Soledad Fernández Bouzo
      Pages: 23 - 45
Abstract This article analyzes and compares the main narratives circulated by different environmental film institutional devices in Buenos Aires through their documentary films. The key questions are: What type of narratives and approaches of environmentalism mobilize such devices' Which arguments are used' Are they dominated by expert’s speeches which rely on the potential of certain cultural changes and/or science and technology innovations within global capitalist economies' Or rather are they alternative approaches questioning the very foundations of capitalism today' In order to answer those questions, we conducted a sociological analysis on two levels: an institutional one, aimed at characterizing the networks of actors that are formed around the environmental film devices, and a narrative one, the purpose of which is to track the main speeches and approaches on the environmental issue.

Abstract For the Kichwa women living at the Bobonaza and Curaray river basins, in the Pastaza Province, Ecuador, molding ceramics is not just an activity women should take care of, but it also implies a way of relating to other human and non-human beings inhabiting in their environment. It also conveys a relationship with the materials and social and symbolic structures that give meaning to their experience. Since 2012 oil extraction tenders in the Ecuadorian Amazon have been posing a threat to their life experience. In this context of threats associated to extractive concessions, a number of Kichwa women –most of them ceramists– have become politically active and put forth their voice of disagreement to advocate the preservation of their territories. This paper seeks to illustrate how Kichwa women from Pastaza establish relationships with nature and territory through their bodies and the activity of “knitting” ceramics. It is argued that the activity of molding clay is both evidence of this relationship, and of economic and political means through which Kichwa women knit social networks and become agents in defending their territories.

capitaloceno'/ Why should ecological Marxism be considered in the era
           of the capitalocene'

    • Authors: Alejandro Escalera-Briceño, Manuel Ángeles-Villa, Alejandro Palafox-Muñoz
      Pages: 69 - 90
Abstract The objective of this paper is to make inroads into de debates within ecological Marxism in order to underscore the importance of looking at the Marxist categories of historical materialism and dialectics in the light of the ongoing era of the Capitalocene. We began with a summary of recent developments in non-Marxist disciplines that deal with the human / nature interface through “hybrid approaches, such as ecological economics and political ecology. With a view of forwarding a proposal for ecological Marxism as a viable and robust alternative, we then mobilize into play several quotations from Marx on the subject, in order to lead us into the current debates between, mainly, Bellamy Foster and Jason Moore. We suggest that in the Capitalocene, purveyor great threats to the planet, humanity and capitalism itself, those debates can offer very worthwhile readings of the contradictions of advanced capitalism.

la salvación del planeta/ The absolute trust in science, or how
geoengineering holds the salvation of the planet

    • Authors: Vera Sanoja Zerpa
      Pages: 91 - 107
Abstract This paper offers a conceptual approach framework between geoengineering as technology and the “emptiness” in science as a form of knowledge. This is why we will study the socio-ecological consequences of the role of scientific panelists and decision-makers towards the geoengineering agenda. We would like to talk about science and technology as the dominant rationality that “doesn’t think itself”, then we will make a critique of the hegemonic narrative of the Anthropocene and finally revise some Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports as a way to study the discursive phenomena and point out some ideological interstices in the scientific language.

towards the imminent renewable paradigm: the role of ion-lithium batteries
           and South American perspectives

    • Authors: Martin Ariel Kazimierski
      Pages: 108 - 132
Abstract The current global energy system is characterized by a high dependence on fossil fuels, a paradigm that begins to encounter difficulties as existing reserves are depleted and ecological costs increase. Thus, the incorporation of renewable energies, their generation in a distributed form and the growth of the electric motor park, are presented as the most promising triad in the conformation of a new, more efficient and sustainable paradigm. This article focuses on the importance that energy accumulators acquire in this scenario, mainly due to their role in stabilizing networks and enabling self-consumption and electric propulsion. It identifies lithium-ion batteries with a wide range of possibilities for South America, which has the most important reserves of lithium in the world, incorporating the idea of development within the new energy pattern and in a current and potential market of large dimensions.

  • Movimientos sociales populares frente el Tercer Sector: estudio comparado
de organizaciones campesinas de Brasil, Argentina y México/Popular social
movements faced with the third sector: A comparative study about peasant
           organizations of Brazil, Argentina

    • Authors: Lucas Henrique Pinto
      Pages: 133 - 156
Abstract This research approaches the issue of the international collective action, from the rise of the third sector organizations to the resurgence of counter-hegemonic peasant movements that internationalize and “environmentalize” their struggle from the discussions of agroecology, food sovereignty and environmental justice. These discussions will be exemplified by three peasant organizations in Brazil, México and Argentina. The organizations above mentioned express the processes of peasant territorialization and their dynamics in the three countries, in addition to a complex approach to the environmental issues that proposes a normative break related to the actions of the traditional environmental NGO´s, foundations and organizations. The organizations that we characterize in comparative terms are innovatory in relation to the classic peasant movement, because they move further into contemporary issues such as environmental questions, internal democracy and food sovereignty; resignifying and “environmentalizing” the contemporary agrarian question. Also, these organizations confront capitalism and rescue, from a critical perspective, the experiences of the social and trade union movements that preceded them. Then, the peasant organizations studied in this work affirm in their existence and social base some characteristics that the School of New Social Movements tends to deny in its analytical interpretation of the international collective action in globalization and social subjects (third sector) that this School privileges in their analyzes.

de suelo en Mindo/ Nature-based tourism and biological conservation:
           land-use decisions in Mindo

    • Authors: Jorje Ignacio Zalles
      Pages: 178 - 198
Abstract Nature-based tourism is recognized as an indirect economic incentive for biological conservation. In particular, the expectation is that visits aimed at the observation of wildlife in its natural state will encourage the establishment of land-use patterns that are favorable to the biological integrity of destination landscapes. The locality of Mindo has in recent decades become a well-known destination for nature-based tourism. This article analyzes the role played by tourism in land-use decisions aimed at increasing native forest cover in Mindo. The institutional framework associated with tourism is described, and a cognitive map of land-use decisions by participants in a forest restoration program is presented. The improvement of touristic attractiveness through forest restoration is an important influence on individual agency regarding land use in Mindo. There are institutional challenges, however, that limit tourism´s potential as a land-use driver for increased forest cover, and therefore its contribution to biological conservation at a landscape level.
