  • Foreword

    • Authors: Jun IKEDA
Abstract: To tackle global issues in an era of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity the Human and Social Sciences must take action to go beyond interdisciplinary education and research and to seek collaboration with the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and so on. To cite Japan’s new Science, Technology, and Innovation Basic Plan issued in 2021, “it will become increasingly important to accumulate ‘knowledge’ with depth in the humanities and social sciences, and to create and utilize ‘convergence of knowledge’ that contributes to comprehensive understanding and problem-solving of issues regarding human beings and society through fusion with ‘knowledge’ in the natural sciences.

  • About Variability, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity

    • Authors: Saburo AOKI
Abstract: This issue discusses how humanities and social science research is intrinsically important and indispensable in the context of VUCA, the ‘uncertain’ and ‘difficult to predict’ social situation created by advanced science and technology. It also explains that interdisciplinary research is the most effective approach to humanities research in the VUCA era, and that there are many different types of approaches. From this perspective, the published articles and research projects are presented.

  • Qualitative Analysis on the Progress and Difficulty of LGBT Politics in
           Latin America: Focus on Peru

    • Authors: Saori ISODA
      Pages: 19 - 44
Abstract: This article analyzes why some Latin American countries have succeeded in implementing laws that protect the rights of LGBT people, while other countries have not. To address this question, the article focuses on LGBT rights in Peru as a negative case study. Peru has enjoyed economic growth over many years, which is considered one of the key factors for increasing tolerance of the LGBT community by heterosexual people. In addition, some LGBT legislators and parties are fighting to legalize civil unions and same-sex marriage. Nonetheless, the Peruvian Congress rejected the civil union bill despite the struggle of the LGBT Community and their supporters. Since the progressive left-wing party is weak in Peru, the right-wing party does not try to capture leftist followers who tend to show more tolerance for LGBT. The lack of consensus between left-wing politicians has divided and weakened their share of the vote. Therefore, the weakness of progressive left-wing politicians allows right-wing politicians to ignore the rights of LGBT. On the other hand, most of the rigid left-wing politicians receive support from rural areas where modernization has partially permeated, and they must prioritize economic issues rather than sexual ones. Therefore, the gap between urban and rural areas and the stagnation of gender issues allows the rigid leftist and right-wing politicians to ignore sexual diversity. This article concludes that the growth gap between urban and rural areas and strong veto players prevent Congress from approving LGBT people’s rights.

  • The Inuit of Greenland: Doing Area Studies on the Compromise between
           Reciprocity and Utility

    • Authors: Minori TAKAHASHI
      Pages: 45 - 62
Abstract: It has been pointed out that the concept of the relationship between humans and nature held by Greenland’s Inuit, in comparison with Alaska and Canada, contains a strong utilitarian perception that seeks to maximize, and which exists in compromise with, a reciprocal attitude towards nature. However, almost no work has been done to unravel the process in which, so to speak, such a mixture was created. This paper summarizes the joint research that posed the question why such a relationship between humans and nature, which is a compromise between reciprocity and utilitarianism, was formed. We focused our attention on three factors that have been addressed in previous research only partially and have not been examined thoroughly enough: A. fusion with Christianity, B. the processes of modernization and secularization, and C. the cultural and social role of elders in the Inuit society.

  • Revisiting ‘Saiko Dayo’, the Japanese Fishermen’s Song of Cabo
Verde, its Societal and Creative Values

    • Authors: Kay AOKI
      Pages: 63 - 97
Abstract: In the 1960s, the port of Cabo Verde flourished as it became a hub for tuna fishing by Japanese fishermen. Japanese interaction with the local islanders led to the creation of a song about the Japanese fishermen called Saiko Dayo. Today, the societal image of this song by the islanders is undergoing a transformation. In this paper, I organise the background to the creation of this song, and analyse the discourse of the islanders and the representations (songs and image drawings) of Saiko Dayo by artists, in order to reveal that a new societal image of Saiko Dayo is being created. First, it is clear that the societal image of Saiko Dayo is deeply related to the islanders’ idea of simplicidade, which encompasses two contradictory ideas: exclusion and inclusion. Secondly, the song’s satirical message about Japanese fishermen has been transformed by eliminating the exclusive message in the lyrics. Thus, the mutual influence of the islanders and Japanese fishermen created the song Saiko Dayo, which was transformed into a new creative image by artists. In this way, the self and the other dissolve and take shape again. It is only after this stage that the song is transformed into a versatile, collective value, rather than an individual’s feelings. And when a particular culture becomes a collective value, it allows the next generation to weave that value in various other ways.

  • Atomic Bomb Survivor Testimonies as Sociolinguistic Data: An Approach from
           Discourse Analysis

    • Authors: Ikuko OKUGAWA
      Pages: 99 - 134
Abstract: This study takes testimonies from hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) as data, to perform a discourse analysis of 1) the structure of testimonies and 2) how speakers’ identities and viewpoints are presented therein. The testimonies examined proved to be compatible with Labov’s framework of Abstract, Orientation, Complication, Internal Evaluation, and External Evaluation. Abstract and Orientation mainly appeared at the beginning, whereas External Evaluation was seen at the end, in closing. Moreover, narrators reinterpret the meaning of their experiences in their own ways, including their own value judgments from their own social and personal points of view. We expand Labov’s framework by relating this aspect of value judgment to anthropological, psychological, and sociological frameworks of identity.

  • The Intangibility of the Intangible in Cross-cultural Contexts: Assessing
the Value Gaps in Heritage Protection

    • Authors: Tinka DELAKORDA KAWASHIMA
      Pages: 135 - 152
Abstract: This paper highlights shortcomings in the cultural heritage evaluation process that focuses on the tangible rather than the intangible, thus leading to the exclusion of certain communities. The paper summarizes the results of published research on the exclusion of the so-called Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians) communities in Hirado on the north-western tip of Nagasaki Prefecture. The study investigated the heritage-making process using triangulation methodology combining document analysis and fieldwork in Hirado. The results showed that in the face of cultural differences in evaluating the intangible and religious, the authorities — the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs and UNESCO — followed the global authenticity and integrity criteria. I argue that privileging tangible secular elements of the religious heritage led to the disregarding of cultural values that make the nominated site of Hirado unique.

  • A Quantitative Study of Transitive and Intransitive Constructions in Hindi
           and Japanese

    • Authors: Anubhuti CHAUHAN
      Pages: 153 - 177
Abstract: Previous studies have suggested that, like Japanese, Hindi displays a preference for intransitive constructions that describe events as spontaneous occurrences over transitive constructions that give prominence to the agent. This study compares the frequency of transitive and intransitive constructions in the two languages by using a Hindi novel and its Japanese translation as a parallel corpus. The results show that not only was there no significant difference in the number of transitive and intransitive constructions, the frequency of transitivity pairs (causative/non- causative pairs) is also similar with both languages using more non-causative pairs. The implication of this finding for errors observed in Hindi-speaking learners of Japanese is discussed.

  • The Experiences of International Students in Japanese Bachelor Programs

    • Authors: Miho IRIYAMA, Keiko SUGIMOTO
      Pages: 179 - 195
Abstract: This study aimed to understand the experiences of international students in Japanese bachelor programs by exploring factors related to their Japanese language proficiency. A total of seventy-nine international undergraduate students responded to the online survey. In the analysis, descriptive and bivariate statistics were performed for all international undergraduate students, including the JEP (Japan-Expert Program) students who had been educated in the Japanese language. In the bivariate statistics, the relation between Japanese language proficiency against demographics, GPA (Grade Point Average), campus life and health status were examined. As a result, the following two points were revealed: i) among all international students, those with lower Japanese language proficiency faced more difficulty in understanding course contents, having part-time jobs, being in the upper grades, and had poorer perceived sleep quality; ii) in JEP students, those with low Japanese proficiency had a lower GPA. Thus, the Japanese language proficiency of international students in bachelor-degree programs is related to their grades, part-time jobs, and sleep quality, especially GPAs in JEP students. To support these students, it is necessary to provide continuous and comprehensive Japanese language education, including lifestyle and learning support, from the time of admission to graduation.

  • Processing Technologies and Production of Food in the Jomon Period

    • Authors: Takamune KAWASHIMA
      Pages: 197 - 217
Abstract: During the Jomon period, which lasted about 13,000 years, a variety of food processing techniques were developed. First of all, there is pottery itself, which was the most basic tool for processing food in the Jomon. Early pottery is thought to have been used for cooking and processing fish, but the number of pottery sherds excavated in the Incipient Jomon is quite limited. The number of pottery shapes increased later on, suggesting that pottery was used for various purposes and times during the Jomon period. As for food processing facilities, we can point to a series of earthen pits in the Kyushu region which are thought to have been smoking facilities, and shell mounds as food processing sites that were typically developed in eastern Japan. Each technology had its diversity depending on the period and region. Although not food itself, salt production using salt-making pottery began in the Late Jomon period. From the Late Jomon period onward, the number of water reservoirs associated with wooden structures used for processing nuts, such as horse chestnuts and walnuts, increased in eastern Japan. Although acorn and nuts had been used since the Early Jomon period, the use of lowland storage pits in the western part of Japan suggests that the use and processing of acorn and nuts changed after the Late Jomon period.

  • The Correlation Between Literature, Drama and Film: A Discussion of ‘A
           Wife in Musashino’

    • Authors: Takashi FURUTA
      Pages: 221 - 232
Abstract: The aim of this article is to demonstrate the close correlation between Ōoka Shohei’s A Wife in Musashino, published in 1950 and its adaptations. This correlation between A Wife in Musashino and its adaptations allows us to find that the original text does not merely influence its adaptations, but also that their relations have interacting factors. This paper addresses Fukuda Tsuneari’s drama adaptation, staged in 1951 and Mizoguchi Kenji’s film adaptation, released in 1951. In an attempt to examine the correlation, this paper compares the original novel with its adaptations. The comparative analysis discusses the following points. First, I examine the commonalities and differences of the ending between Fukuda’s drama, Mizoguchi’s film, and Ōoka’s novel by examining how the ending of Ōoka’s novel is transformed by Fukuda and Mizoguchi. Second, I examine the commonalities and differences of Michiko’s suicide by focusing on the ‘accidental’ factors. Ōoka and Fukuda commented on the accidental factors in their novel and drama respectively. By looking at these comments more closely, I analyze the intertextuality between Ōoka and Fukuda. This paper shows that the correlation between A Wife in Musashino and its adaptations provides us with diverse ways to interpret and create.

  • Metaphysics and Metaphysical Poetry in the Eastern Jin Dynasty

    • Authors: Nozomi WAKU
      Pages: 233 - 243
Abstract: Sun Chuo comprehensively grasped the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism by using the concept of the Dao as a cord. Therefore, Confucian saints, Buddhist buddhas, and Lao Tzu were considered to be on the same ground as those who mastered the Dao. Moreover, Sun Chuo did not only grasp such metaphysical phases intellectually, but he actually aimed to achieve the metaphysical state himself. And in the end, it became an attempt to fly beyond all relative conflicts, although it first relied on both traditional and foreign ideas. In the literary works written by Sun Chuo, his thoughts based on such multiple religions were lying in the background.

  • Cooperation between Japanese Linguistics and Japanese Language Education

    • Authors: Yu TANAKA
      Pages: 245 - 251
Abstract: In this paper, we consider the possibility of cooperation between Japanese linguistics and Japanese language education using the teaching material draft of ‘citation’ as a subject matter. In some instances, the work of applying new learning items added by the revision of the Government Course Curriculum Guidelines to the level of specific linguistic expression has not been done adequately. The first step in cooperation between Japanese linguistics and Japanese language education is to carry out such work on the Japanese linguistics end and to propose teaching material drafts.

      Pages: 253 - 260
Abstract: In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in immersive virtual reality (iVR). However, iVR in Japanese language education (JLE) lags behind education for other languages. In this paper, the author reviews iVR Japanese language learning content that is currently under development. Further, the author argues that in order to collaborate with experts in different fields during the development process, it is necessary to accumulate knowledge in those fields and to consider how to reconstruct such knowledge. 要旨

  • A Comparative Study of Blended Learning and Face-to-Face Instruction in
           University-Level Chinese Language Education

    • Authors: Tingjie XU
      Pages: 261 - 267
Abstract: This study examines university-level Chinese language education by comparing blended learning courses, which combine on-demand video-based classes and face-to-face Zoom classes, with conventional face-to-face courses. The data was drawn from the final exam grades and course evaluation questionnaires for the 2018-2020 academic years. The study resulted in two main conclusions: 1) In the case of grades, the blended learning classes, which were held remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, were as effective in achieving their learning goals as the regular face-to-face classes; 2) With regard to course evaluations, the scores of the two questions asked, (i.e. ‘ways to attract student attention’ and ‘methods of presenting teaching materials’) were lower for the blended learning courses than for the 2018 and 2019 face-to-face courses. Therefore, it is clear that these two aspects must be prioritized in the future.

Abstract: While the importance of interdisciplinary studies has been recognized recently, each research field is becoming more subdivided. Expertise in the research field must be assured yet, on the other hand, joint research with other research areas can effectively expand the depth and reach of research. Based on my own experience, this paper introduces an example of interdisciplinary study combining archaeology, geology, and geotechnology. I show that this interdisciplinary study has a wider social significance than isolated studies in each research area would have had.
