Abstract: In the last decade of the twentieth century, environmentalist Marcus Colchester (1997) in his book Guyana, Fragile Frontier: Loggers, Miners, and Forest Peoples argues impressively that developing countries such as Guyana suffer from the theory of regulation. Instead of the governments in the developing countries controlling and regulating multinational corporations on their soil, they are regulated by these corporations through signed contracts. The signed contract between the Guyana government and ExxonMobil and its consortium is typical of an unfortunate reality that has been going on in resource-rich developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean for decades. Governments in these regions ... Read More PubDate: 2022-12-25T00:00:00-05:00

Read More PubDate: 2022-12-25T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: The unfolding biodiversity conservation crisis makes prioritizing conservation efforts important. Limited resources for biodiversity conservation are growing less adequate to meet conservation needs (Cardinale et al. 2012; Hooper et al. 2012; Pereira et al. 2010). Over half of known species are in decline (Ceballos et al. 2015; Dirzo et al. 2014; McCallum 2015), and extinction rates are around 1,000 times higher than historical levels (Pimm et al. 1995). Most accounts suggest biodiversity conservation challenges will only grow in the face of rapid global change in land cover (Foley et al. 2005; Newbold et al. 2015) and climate (Bellard et al. 2012). These contexts require difficult tradeoffs as not all species can ... Read More PubDate: 2022-12-25T00:00:00-05:00

Read More PubDate: 2022-12-25T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: The consumption of food contaminated by aflatoxins can lead to health problems, including stunted growth, nutritional deficiency, a weakened immune system, and liver cancer (Christie et al. 2015; Jordan et al. 2018; Asare Bediako et al. 2019). Consequently, many countries impose minimum safety standards to prevent the import of aflatoxin-contaminated foods (van Egmond and Jonker 2004). Aflatoxins pose an especially serious public health threat in tropical regions where peanuts and maize—two food items particularly vulnerable to contamination—are often part of the staple diet (Bhat and Vasanthi 2003).In Haiti, peanuts, which are mostly consumed as peanut butter, are an important source of protein (Paul, Delva, and ... Abstract: Selwyn D. Ryan, the most prolific and influential intellectual in post-colonial Trinidad, passed away on 12 March 2022. Put in the simplest terms: one cannot understand much of the modern political history of Trinidad and Tobago without studying and digesting the works of this political scientist, historian, and public pollster.Over his 52 years as an engaged researcher and publisher of academic works, Ryan produced a total of 24 books and hundreds of academic monographs and articles, virtually all produced in Trinidad and Tobago. It is a record unequalled anywhere else in the Caribbean. Indeed, it would have been a commendable performance anywhere else in the academic world. The fact that many of these ... Abstract: Sujatha Fernandes regales us with an eclectic collection of essays aptly titled The Cuban Hustle. As she explains at the outset, the idea of 'the hustle' comes from a combination of luchar, resolver, inventar and jinetear. The first three are very much ingrained in the Cuban vernacular of the revolutionary period, while the fourth symbolizes the period ushered in by the crisis 1990s. The turn to international tourism brought with it an unintended sexual dimension, and jinetear took on a whole new meaning as Cuba once again defied the odds to survive, albeit in a changed form. The context for 'hustle' is that of Cuba as an island 'crucible that fostered all kinds of dynamic cultures' in which 'ordinary Cubans' sought ... Abstract: Contemporary Caribbean political economy debates are mostly centered on national cases or how national economies are asymmetrically integrated into global markets. Globalizing the Caribbean: Political Economy, Social Change and the Transnational Capitalist Class offers a convincing argument for why the Caribbean's political economy of today must be examined from a transnational perspective. Jeb Sprague examines the changing political economy of the global era in the context of the Caribbean. He argues that a reconfiguration of social, economic, and political relations is taking place, rooted in the ruthless competitive processes of global capitalism. Therefore, he considers the Caribbean should be studied from a ... Read More PubDate: 2022-12-25T00:00:00-05:00
