  • River Culture in Nepal

    • Authors: Kamala Dahal
      Pages: 1 - 12
Abstract: Most of the world civilizations are developed in the river basins. However, we do not have too big rivers in Nepal, though Nepalese culture is closely related with water and rivers. All the sacraments from birth to the death event in Nepalese society are related with river. Rivers and ponds are the living places of Nepali gods and goddesses. Jalkanya and Jaladeviare known as the goddesses of rivers. In the same way, most of the sacred places are located at the river banks in Nepal. Varahakshetra, Bishnupaduka, Devaghat, Triveni, Muktinath and other big Tirthas lay at the riverside. Most of the people of Nepal despose their death bodies in river banks. Death sacrement is also done in the tirthas of such localities. In this way, rivers of Nepal bear the great cultural value. Most of the sacramental, religious and cultural activities are done in such centers. Religious fairs and festivals are also organized in such a places. Therefore, river is the main centre of Nepalese cultural activities and we can find the remains of ld cultural remains in river basins.

  • Shivalinga : Symbolism, Typology and a Glance on Licchavi Shivalingas

    • Authors: Sandhya Khanal Parajuli
      Pages: 26 - 37
Abstract: The images that look like a male and a female organ have been discovered around the world and are marked as sacred since the establishment of civilization. What does this image symbolize' Why do Hindus worship it and why is it personified as lord Shiva' The concentration to answer these queries through descriptive analysis of the linga is tried in this article. Lingas are found in various civilizations, including Indus valley, but the perception varies. Its tangible and intangible form and several varieties are its typology. This article is mainly based on symbolism of linga for various societies and for earlier Aryans. Linga, though varies in form, is a phallic symbolism of creation which was not accepted by the Aryans at first due to its nudity and straightforwardness. But after the realization of its core theme that the linga is the composition of prakriti and purush, it made them eager to establish through its reformed reality rather than his anthropomorphic form in honor of their supreme god, the creator and a destroyer, no other than lord Shiva who self-emerged as jyotirlinga. Almost all the typologies including maximum varieties of manmade lingas are found around Kathmandu valley but the choice of Licchavis for the establishement of linga with its specific typology and theme are discussed.

  • Analyzing Tourism Behaviours and Tourism Autonomy in the Global Market:
Cases of Nepal's Pashupatinath Temple and Korean DMZ

    • Authors: Abhijeet Thapa
      Pages: 38 - 50
Abstract: Tourist guides and travel agents in Nepal had been selling Hindu funeral rite as tourism package to the tourists in the Pashupatinath premises until the Covid pandemic hit the global market paralyzing tourism to a woeful state. However, soon after the dangers are curbed this will continue on a surging pace hopefully. Non- Hindus do not get to enter the temple but westerners and tourists throng here to see the extraordinary funeral rite which surely can be put as popular product that has outgrown its small-dome in this World heritage site. Unlike the ritual niche package of the Nepalese, in another part of the world, South Koreans have been selling "border-sights" in a strip of land between North Korea and South Korea. The notorious infiltration tunnels there in are so said to have been clandestinely built by North Korea to sneak its army into Seoul and capture South Korea by surprise which were found out after the secret was spilled by a North Korean involved in the project. Until now, 4 such tunnels have been found but it is believed that there are numerous. As of now, there are no clear clarifications and political confessions from North Korea about these. This paper unfurls through writer's own experiences in different roles (as a tourist guide and as a tourist) at these two entirely different sites to dig upon how tourism products are sold, consumed and popularized in the tourism sectors. The findings also reveal how states as hosts have begun inducing captivating packages in unusual destinations that turn tourists into consumers. But there are unanswered question of ethics and tourism strategies.
