  • Is there any scientific imbalance in the academic education of the
           physician'

    • Authors: Omar Larentis; Ilaria Gorini, Benuzzi Guido, Giuseppe Armocida, Maria Jutta Birkhoff
Abstract: This contribution follows the talk presented during the 2018 International Seminars on Planetary Emergencies, Science for Peace the World Over at the Majorana Foundation in Erice, Sicily. Over the centuries, medicine has changed the approach to the sick and the disease. Too much focused on the biomedical sciences, it has thus lost the teaching and wisdom inherited from the past. In this paper, we discuss the need to reacquire ancient knowledge and the importance of the educational role of the Human Sciences and the History of Medicine in the mature training of the modern doctor, as claimed in the early 20th century by the Italian doctor Luigi Mangiagalli. As asserted by the American psychiatrist George Liebman Engel, a culture that also includes historical information facilitates the understanding of the present and helps to develop an epistemological and critical sense, which is indispensable in age too intoxicated by so many scientific successes and which appears obstinate in her certainties.

  • A law on the end of life: emerging from ideological conflicts

    • Authors: Romina Ciaccia; Paolo Fontana
Abstract: After years of debates, the Chamber of Deputies approved in Italy the possibility of accepting, under certain conditions, to assisted suicide. The issue of physician-assisted suicide is considered among the most controversial of the current bioethical debates in our Country. Efforts are needed to overcome ideological extremisms, to welcome the different sensitivities that exist in the country and to reconcile the various options.

  • Venanzio Lupacchini (1730-1775). An Italian small-town doctor and literary
           man of the Enlightenment Age

    • Authors: Luca Ventura; Loredana Ginevra Ianni, Alessandra Foscati
Abstract: Venanzio Lupacchini was an eighteenth-century doctor and literary man from L’Aquila, central Italy. He studied Medicine in Naples, and went back to his hometown to practice medical profession. His historical figure has been handed down by largely celebratory biographies. A survey of coeval textual sources helped us to highlight his historical profile as a physician between the close-minded milieu of the city and his deep knowledge of contemporary therapies.

  • Ethics in Osteopathic practice and research: the proposal for an Ethical
           Framework

    • Authors: Elena Ferioli
Abstract: Actually the clinical and research context in which health care is provided is characterized by new challenges for health workers, researchers and the broader health care of the community who increasingly find themselves confronted with moral questions and ethical dilemmas which are not rare phenomena and thus merit special attention. Clinical ethics is a thoughtful exploration of how to act well and make morally good choices, based on beliefs and values about life, health, suffering, and death. Because of their holistic approach to medicine and as predominantly primary care practitioners, osteopaths may face a wide range of ethical dilemmas. Recently the National Council for Osteopathic Research has produced a document intended to demonstrate best practice in osteopathic research that must be considered when conducting research in an ethical manner. On the other hand, actually, substantive discussion of specific ethical issues is rarely included in clinical research protocols. A framework of ethics analysis geared specifically for osteopaths is needed to highlight the values morally relevant in their clinical and research practice. A preliminary attempt at such a framework is offered in this study with the development of an ethical framework and two practical ethics tool kits serviceable for clinical and research practice perfectly fitted for osteopathic profession.

  • The parent as a "co-therapist" in the care of the minor: an
           ethical issue

    • Authors: Linda Alfano; Roberta Monteleone, Paolo Petralia , Rosagemma Ciliberti
Abstract: Disease can represent a particularly complicated and sometimes traumatic event in the life of a child. The support and assistance of adults and the various reference figures (parents and health care personnel) who, with different functions and responsibilities, intervene in the care relationship, play a decisive role. The child in its complete entity must be at the center of the therapeutic intervention. The minor that must be taken care of, in fact, before being an ill person is a person with a history, a family with the experiences that characterize and shape his identity into specificity. The way in which health workers relate to parents and children affects significantly not only the course of care, but also the continuation of parental relationship and mental models that the child builds to formulate expectations about his future care experiences. To be able to adequately support the child, particular attention must be paid to promoting forms and methods of parental participation that are genuinely respectful, inclusive, and relevant.

  • All ptomaines fault!

    • Authors: Francesca Donato; Rossella Greco, Carlotta Carpentieri , Benedetta Pittore, Carmela D'Orlando, Annalidia Donato, Natalia Malara , Giuseppe Donato
Abstract: This essay attempts to reconstruct the story of ptomaines, discovered in 1872 by the Italian chemist Francesco Selmi. This work provides a brief summary of this story, focusing also on an emblematic clinical study by the end of the 19th century, written by Raffaele Canger, a doctor who worked in the Asylum of Nocera Inferiore in Italy. The main thesis of Canger's paper is that the transient neuropsychiatric symptoms, which can occur during influenza or other infectious diseases, are due to a toxic delirium caused by the direct action of ptomaines on the brain with subsequent restitutio ad integrum. The importance of the discovery of ptomaines was discredited for a very long time, but recently, with the contribute of molecular biology it was established again the role of these molecules in human pathology.

  • Cranial modification and trepanation in pre-Hispanic collections from Peru
in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, Florence, Italy.

    • Authors: Tommaso Mori; Alessandro Riga, Giulia Dionisio, Francesca Bigoni, Jacopo Moggi-Cecchi
Abstract: Artificial cranial modification (ACM) and trepanation are medical treatments with a long history among different human societies. One of the most iconic cultures, Pre-Hispanic Peruvian populations, are well known for evidence of ACM and trepanation. Here, we present evidence of such practices from the collection housed in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, University of Florence, Italy. The Museum has a rich and important collection of medical-related specimens such as instruments and human remains. We studied the presence of ACM and trepanation in 370 skulls, from different regional and cultural periods, and medical tools. Most of the osteological remains came from the Lima region and Cuzco. Frequencies of ACM and trepanation were compared to evaluate differences in their occurrence in the two regions and among sexes and age groups. Among the 287 skulls with ACM these were distributed similarly in all age classes; no differences between sexes were found. Lima and Cuzco samples differed strongly for the type of ACM, with the first showing tabular type and the second the annular one. Trepanation was documented by 14 specimens mainly from Cuzco. Most of the individuals survived the trepanation events. Trepanation was achieved using two methods: scarification and circular cutting. From the ethnological collection, a total of 16 instruments used in the process were described and studied. Chisels were found as funerary belongings, thus indicating the importance such tools had for these populations and the association between medical treatments and magical and religious rituals. This evidence confirmed the specialized knowledge and advanced medical practices that Pre-Hispanic populations had.

  • Description of the entomofauna associated with the remains of the
Cistercian nun Angela Veronica Bava (1591-1637)

    • Authors: Stefano Vanin; Rosa Boano, Giorgia Giordani, Giuseppina Carta, Ezio Fulcheri
Abstract: The study of insects and other arthropods from death bodies is commonly used in forensic contexts but, in the last years this approached is also applied to archaeological contexts where cadavers - human or other animals – are found. Insects provides a large spectrum of information that is used to reconstruct the peri and post mortem events. In this paper the evidence produced by insects collected from the remains of the nun Angela Veronica Bava is used to describe the taphonomic process of the body and to verify historical data. Diptera and Coleoptera fragments were collected from the body. Diptera belong to Hydrotaea capensis (Muscidae), whereas Coleoptera are included in 5 different families Zopheridae, Carabidae, Dermestidae, Staphylinidae and Endomychidae. Entomological evidence is in agreement with the historical data highlighting that the entomological approach can be properly carried out in archaeological studies related with religious contexts.

  • The malformed Non-adult Human Skeletal Remains of the Anthropology Museum
of Naples: reading the past writes the future

    • Authors: Lucia Borrelli; Mariailaria Verderame
Abstract: Human skeleton remains provide data to reconstruct the history of human evolution and allow to retrace the lifestyle, culture and habits of ancient and modern populations. Bones and teeth retain the traces of growth and aging processes and their morphology can be influenced by internal and external factors including metabolic, nutritional and infectious diseases or traumatic events. The skeleton therefore represents an interesting biological archive. In this study, by anthropometric and morphological analyses, we have examined the non-adult human skeletal remains of the Anthropology Museum of the University Federico II in Naples to derive information regarding the process of skull ossification and skeletal development during prenatal and neonatal life. Then we have crossed our results with those deriving from a bibliographic survey to determine if the observed malformed status met the criteria of any pathological diagnosis of genetic nature, possibly incompatible with life. The research was conducted through a non-invasive method to safeguard the integrity of finds considered their rarity and historic importance.
