  • Krigsramte bønder. Den demografiske udvikling i et sønderjysk

Abstract: War-stricken Peasants: The Demographic Development in a Schleswig Parish, 1620–1660
As soldiers lived off the land in occupied territories, 17th-century warfare had vast consequences for rural populations. The demographic system was put under pressure as fertility dropped and the transmission of disease led to highly increased mortality. This article studies the long-term demographic consequences of war in Øster Løgum, a parish in the duchy of Schleswig, by attempting to reconstruct the size of its population. It focuses on three periods when foreign troops occupied the duchy: 1627–29, 1644–45 and 1657–60. The study shows that the impact of war varied with regard to mortality: the first and third wars were very deadly to the local population, but the second was not. However, a temporary decrease in fertility was common to all three periods. Further, some major difficulties associated with estimating population sizes across mortality crises are discussed.

  • Fra stormflodsflygtning til erhvervsmigrant. Mobilitet fra Limfjordstangen

Abstract: From Flood Refugee to Opportunistic Migrant: Mobility from an Exposed Coastal Area, 1825–1915
This article investigates mobility patterns from a coastal area exposed to changing and challenging environmental conditions by identifying the driving forces behind three waves of relocations from Limfjordstangen (an isthmus on the West coast of Denmark) between 1825 and 1915. Inspired by contemporary migration studies, narratives that analytically illuminate the numerous and mutually related driving forces of mobility are woven from records of valuations of the victims' losses, descriptions and reports from the local administration, the arrival and departure lists of the church registers, and contemporary descriptions of topographical conditions on Limfjordstangen. Throughout the studied period, mobility was characterized by group moves. The mobility patterns away from the isthmus were first motivated by floods that put pressure on the population's housing and land properties. However, the last of the three relocation waves was characterized by families migrating to optimize fishing and earning opportunities. We thus conclude that there is a change from relocations forced by natural disasters to more planned, well-considered and profit-seeking relocations. The article discusses this change in mobility pattern as part of an emerging modernization at the isthmus and considers the possibility that a special local tendency to migrate occurred in the area during the late 1800s.

  • Brevvekslingen mellem Aage Friis og Friedrich Meinecke 1901-1949

      Authors: Peter Hertel Rasmussen
Abstract: The Correspondence between Aage Friis and Friedrich Meinecke
This essay describes and analyzes the friendship between two eminent historians: Professor Aage Friis (1870-1949), a Dane, and Friedrich Meinecke (1862-1954), the German professor and long-time editor of Historische Zeitschrift. From their correspondence, one learns that the two came to know each other around 1900 in the Prussian State Archives, where Friis pursued his interest in late 19th-century Danish-German relations and Meinecke worked as an archivist (he later became a professor in Strasbourg, then Freiburg im Breisgau and eventually Berlin). However, their correspondence only began in earnest after the First World War and culminated after the Second World War. Both were historicists and their preferred field of research was the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the central role of foreign policy and, for Meinecke, the history of ideas. Politically they were not too far apart, Meinecke being moderately liberal and a convinced nationalist while Friis belonged to Denmark’s more leftist, albeit liberal, Det Radikale Venstre. Both were staunch opponents of the Nazis: Meinecke was forced into retirement by them in 1934 and Friis played a central role in Danish and Scandinavian efforts to help exiled German intellectuals. In their correspondence, Friis made great efforts to convey his deep conviction of the necessity of a friendship between Denmark and Germany. After the German defeat in 1945, Friis oversaw the Danish translation of Meinecke’s last work, The German Catastrophe, and their correspondence, coupled with Friis’ presentation of this monograph in Danish and Swedish newspapers, sheds light on the difficulties in promoting German culture at a time when respect for all things German was at a very low ebb.

Abstract: “The Smoke Nuisance” or “The Insidious Death”: Air Pollution and Health in Copenhagen, c. 1920–2020
The perception and handling of air pollution in Copenhagen between c. 1920–2020 changed significantly through four phases. During the first phase, c. 1920–1952, air pollution was regarded as little more than an annoying part of life in a modern, industrial city. This view persisted even after the first measurement of air pollution in Copenhagen, in 1948, which showed it to be even worse than in the notoriously polluted metropolis of London. This changed in 1952, mainly because of the major pollution episode called The Great Smog of London, which caused up to 4000 deaths and tens of thousands of cases of respiratory illness. During this phase, Copenhagen’s air pollution came increasingly to be regarded as a threat to human health and sometimes was referred to as “The Insidious Death”. Studies probed the extent of the problem and sought methods to reduce it. Initially, these efforts took place in private organisations of technical experts. Only in the second half of the 1960s did municipal and national agencie take action. An important stimulus for the development was work carried out in international organisations such as the WHO, the OECD, and the UN. In 1971, the perception of air pollution as a problem of public concern led to the establishment of the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. This event marks the end of the second period, which was formative in the history of the perception and management of air pollution in Copenhagen and Denmark in eneral. During the third phase, c. 1971–1993, the perception of air pollution in Copenhagen changed again. Concern now shifted away from human health and towards the damage done to nature by acid rain caused by international long-distance air pollution. However, it was not yet possible to prove any causal relationship between air pollution and human morbidity and mortality in Denmark. Since air pollution was slowly decreasing due to legislation, purification and dispersion, the medical estimation was that air pollution in Copenhagen was no cause of concern for healthy individuals and only posed a minor problem to patients with cardiovascular illnesses. During the fourth and current phase, beginning in c. 1993, the perception of air pollution in Copenhagen changed again. New statistical methods showed that exposure to even low levels of air pollution over longer time periods would increase mortality. Accordingly, the main concern related to air pollution shifted back to human health, and this new approach explains the WHO’s proclamation that air pollution is the greatest environmental threat to human health, with an estimated 8 million premature deaths globally each year. Today, the level of air pollution in Copenhagen is much lower than it was in 1920 and 1970, yet it does not yet meet the global air quality guidelines published by the WHO in September 2021. An estimated 440 Copenhageners die prematurely every year.

Abstract: Arguments for Nuclear Power in Denmark: Elements of a Contemporary History
Support for nuclear energy in Denmark has been negligible since 1985, when the Danish parliament withdrew the technology from Danish energy planning. In recent years, however, pro-nuclear voices have reappeared. “Nuclear power – no thanks” still reigns in the Danish parliament and the public sphere, but a growing constellation of pro-nuclear views now constitutes a newly resonant vocal minority. In this article, we take stock of the debate by focusing on four ideal-typical positions in Danish pro-nuclear discourse: technologism, ecomodernism, neoliberalism and right-wing populism. Specifically, we ask how we should understand the main arguments being advanced within the last five years: What characterizes these arguments' What is their reach and focus' To what extent are they compatible' Who promotes them' How do they chime with Danish politics and international developments' What are their prospects' And what does the current debate tell us about the role of growth and technology in contemporary Danish history' The article proceeds in three steps. To illuminate the degree of continuity and innovation in the current support for nuclear power, we first present the historical background for the contemporary Danish nuclear debate. Then we map the four prominent positions in the debate, which leads to an overall characterization of support for nuclear power as well as a discussion of the strengths, weaknesses and challenges associated with it in Danish and international contexts . We then reflect on possible explanations for the increased support for nuclear power in recent years. Finally, we conclude that renewed and intensified support for nuclear power in Denmark must be seen in the light of three key features of contemporary Danish history: A high degree of consensus about the grave challenges posed by the climate crisis, increasing familiarity with large investments in non-fossil energy systems, and the declining influence of anti-growth ideologies in Danish politics. Although the practical significance of the support for nuclear power in the coming years is uncertain, the study invites reflection on how we understand and periodize recent Danish history. Central here is the question of how the skepticism towards growth and technology, which emerged in the 1960s and became widespread during the 1970s, is to be interpreted: Is it a general feature or rather a parenthesis in contemporary Danish history'
