  • Transculturalism of the Harlem Renaissance: West Indian presences in The
           New Negro

    • Authors: Kerry-Jane Wallart
Abstract: The recently rediscovered West Indian influences in the “Harlem Renaissance” movement are taken here as a methodological tool with which to reconfigure issues of Black Atlantic transnationalism. This paper analyses The New Negro anthology edited by Alain Locke in 1925 in the light of USA exceptionalism, of political influences on canon-rebuilding, and of transcultural negotiations. It re-casts the long-standing postcolonial dialectics between self and other against the background of a movement promoting cultural cohesion but torn by dissonance. The argumentation challenges the national ambition and reception of a literary project whose constitution actually called into question national boundaries. This canon-revising view of the Harlem Renaissance is traced in a range of voices heard at that time, and later (as for instance in Caryl Phillips’s Dancing in the Dark, which revisits both the Barbadian figure of Bert Williams and his representation by Fauset in The New Negro).

  • Susheila Nasta and Mark U. Stein, eds., The Cambridge History of Black and
           Asian British Writing

    • Authors: Kerry-Jane Wallart
Abstract: The scope of the volume is substantial as it encompasses almost four centuries of British writing from the colonial and postcolonial “margins” of Asia, Africa and the Americas. In the introduction, the authors acknowledge a kinship with C.L. Innes’s previous monument (A History of Black and Asian Writing in Britain, 1700-2000, published in 2003). However, their own critical engagement, as well as the table of contents, indicate how thoroughly scholarship has re-thought methods, as well as embraced new textualities, in the span of twenty years. Taken as a whole, the volume both confirms its titular ambition, in presenting an overview of “Black and Asian British writing,” and operates a multi-scalar deconstruction of those very categories, showing how unstable and questionable they might be. This Cambridge compendium gathers 39 chapters and relies on the expertise of over 40 scholars (some of the chapters being joint contributions). The two editors have carried out a remarkable task o...

  • Jennifer Gray, Culinary Diplomacy’s Role in the Immigrant Experience.
Fiction and Memoirs of Middle Eastern Women

    • Authors: Sophie-Anne Sauvegrain
Abstract: Following the example of Claude Levi Strauss, who explained in Mythologiques III. L’origine des manières de table (1968) how the cuisine of a society is a language in which it unconsciously translates its structure, Jennifer Gray invites us to listen to what the kitchen can express and convey, especially in the case of the encounter with other and distant people. She situates her work in relation with Sarah Dune’s 1994 PhD Dissertation “The Foods We Read and the Words We Eat: Four Approaches to the Language of Food in Fiction and Nonfiction” and mobilizes the notion of culinary diplomacy, borrowed from Sam Chapple-Sokol. With finesse and conviction, Gray reveals the role, effects, and scope of culinary diplomacy, with different scales of analysis in mind, from the geo-political to the social spheres of every-day life and advocates the importance of the latter, in the sense that “citizen culinary diplomacy” occurs at local levels in which people come together to interact and learn abo...

  • Renaissance and (Re)Birth(s) of Bengal in Qurratulain Hyder’s Fireflies
in the Mist (1994) and Tahmima Anam’s A Golden Age (2007)

    • Authors: Sandrine Soukaï
Abstract: This article examines the meaning the notion of “rebirth” takes in relation to literary works written against a context of war and trauma. Qurratulain Hyder’s Fireflies in the Mist (1994) and Tahmima Anam’s A Golden Age (2007) explore the understudied 1971 Partition which saw East Pakistan’s “rebirth” as the nation of Bangladesh. The novels depart from the commonly teleological understanding of “rebirth.” They revisit and reassess the achievements of nineteenth-century Bengali Renaissance movements and renew vernacular arts and literatures shared in Bengal prior to its successive Partitions. As such, “rebirth” does not imply a clean break from Bengal’s death-marred past, but rather a creative recovery of the latter.

  • Māori Cultural and Bodily Rebirth in Alan Duff’s Once Were
           Warriors Trilogy

    • Authors: Laura Singeot
Abstract: This article examines what happens in Alan Duff’s trilogy, Once Were Warriors (1990-2002), to the Western novelistic device of individualisation of characters that takes its roots in the European Renaissance. In Duff’s novels, the development of characters is reconfigured through their relation to others as they experience a form of cultural and bodily rebirth in their own community. The trilogy thus offers an alternative to traditional Western characterisation, by deploying other ways of constructing subjectivity.

  • Renaissance: Introduction

    • Authors: Jaine Chemmachery
Abstract: In an interview dating back to May 2021, President Macron declared that France in 2021 made him think of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. In his terms, France is currently experiencing the type of phenomena that “shape a people.” In the same sentence, the French president compared our current era to one corresponding to the “reinvention of a civilisation.” “Renaissance,” as conjured up in President Macron’s speech, partakes of a binary paradigm in which tradition is associated with “oldness,” and “newness” with the “modern.” Yet, this Manichean opposition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance must be questioned. The humanist construction of the subject as individualistic, an entity characterised by consciousness (and epitomised in Descartes’s “Cogito, ergo sum”), is now under reconsideration as it has erased alternative ways of conceptualising living entities such as the idea that subjects can be seen as (always already) part of collectives instead of be...

  • Shakespearean Hypotexts in Ubu and the Truth Commission: Rewriting
Renaissance Texts for the “New South Africa”’s Stage'

    • Authors: Mathilde Rogez
Abstract: Ubu and the Truth Commission (Taylor 2015a) satirically rewrites Macbeth, yet also borrows more problematically from Jarry’s farce and other Shakespearean texts. Coterminous with the hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, this rewriting of Renaissance texts leads us to examine the relation between theatrical genres, the power of the theatre – between iteration and the singular nature of the theatrical performance – and its relation to the confessional mode.

  • Creolization as Cultural and Poetical Rebirth in “Arrival of the
           Snake-Woman” by Olive Senior

    • Authors: Pauline Amy de la Bretèque
Abstract: Creolization is a notion that has given rise to many debates since the 1970s, in the context of the birth of independent Caribbean nations. This phenomenon has played a key role in the definition of identities in the Caribbean whose populations came from all over the world, and where only traces of indigenous culture could be retrieved after the quasi-total extermination of the native populations by the European settlers. In the case of Jamaica, most of the Arawaks (also called Tainos) who inhabited the island died of disease exposure or were killed by the Spanish, even though some of them survived and mixed with the maroon communities of fugitive slaves. The islands have therefore been regarded as cultural laboratories, where the encounter and the mixing of European, African, Asian and Amerindian cultures have given birth to a completely new identity: What has been happening in the Caribbean for the last three centuries is literally this: a coming together of cultural elements from...

  • From Ireland to the Caribbean: Derek Walcott’s Revivalism in
           Translation

    • Authors: Corentin Jégou
Abstract: For Derek Walcott, Caribbean history is marked by the experience of erasure and amnesia. Thus, while the idea of revivalism seems impossible, the West Indian artist is free to fashion a utopian, radically new culture. I will question this narrative in the light of Walcott’s references to the Irish Revival. Focussing on Omeros, I will show that translation provides an alternative path to cultural resurrection.

  • Circumscribing the Horizon in Jane Urquhart’s The Underpainter

    • Authors: Anne-Sophie Letessier
Abstract: This paper discusses the ongoing preoccupation of Canadian novelist Jane Urquhart with the influence of the visual arts on sensitivity, and, more specifically, the anxiety regarding the primacy of vision that permeates The Underpainter (1997). In this ekphrastic novel, Urquhart’s treatment of the pictorial motif of the horizon engages the reader in a reflection on the very foundations of representation, in turn raising questions about the politics of the gaze underlying a painter’s work.
