  • Matteo Dutto. Legacies of Indigenous Resistance: Pemulwuy, Jandamarra and
Yagan in Australian Indigenous Film, Theatre and Literature

    • Authors: Estelle Castro-Koshy
Abstract: Matteo Dutto’s Legacies of Indigenous Resistance, which was recently shortlisted for the 2021 ASAL Alvie Egan Award, is a remarkable book. It is the first book that examines comparatively the legacies of three Indigenous Australian resistance leaders, Pemulwuy, Yagan, and Jandamarra, and provides close analysis of works by Indigenous Australian writers, filmmakers, performers, and communities, who have retold their stories. Pemulwuy, a Bidjigal/Eora man (from the area spreading west from what is now called Botany Bay to Salt Pan Creek) was born around 1750 and fought against the British between 1790 and 1802; a Bunuba (from the Kimberley region of Western Australia), Jandamarra was born around 1873 and killed in 1897; a Noongar (from the Perth area), Yagan was born around 1795 and killed in 1833. Interested in “the social power of storytelling” (3), Dutto, an Italian scholar, focuses on these historical figures because their stories “have produced since their death the largest corpu...

  • In Other Worlds: Imagining What Comes Next. Introduction

    • Authors: Christine Lorre-Johnston, Fiona McCann
Abstract: It is July 2021 and as we write this introduction, parts of Northern Europe have just experienced catastrophic flooding while Western parts of North America are facing yet another formidable and life-threatening heatwave. Earlier this year, southern parts of the USA experienced a polar vortex which translated into record-breaking low temperatures in Texas, Mozambique was devastated by the third cyclone to hit coasts there since 2019, flash floods occurred in Indonesia, displacing thousands, and after having experienced horrendous bushfires in 2020, this year Australia had to face strong flooding. And of course, there is the global pandemic which has exposed the vast inequalities in our world where the inhabitants of some nations (mostly in the Global North) have access to vaccines while others do not. The dystopian elements in the handling of COVID-19 will not have escaped anyone, and the subordination of collective well-being to profit-making through the refusal by pharmaceutical c...

  • “Neither here nor there”: A Conversation with Laila Halaby

    • Authors: Ishak Berrebbah, Laila Halaby
Abstract: Arab American literature, especially the novel, according to the Arab American literary critic Steven Salaita, has developed “as a formidable art form in the Arab American community” (2011, 2). In Salaita’s view, Arab American literature “is undergoing something of a qualitative and quantitative maturation” (2). However, Salaita also points out that it is difficult to define Arab American literature because it is “diverse and heterogeneous” (4). The definition of Arab American literature is complex because the identity of its producers, such as novelists and poets, is even more complex per se. The diversity of Arab backgrounds for Arab-American authors is significant and their ties to both the Arab world and the USA hold political ambiguities and complex characterizations. Such diversity also plays a key role in determining the relationship between the Arab American community and other dominant minority groups. This relationship, as Fadda-Conrey suggests, features “common experience...

  • Negotiating Dataveillance in the Near Future: Margaret Atwood’s
           Dystopias

    • Authors: Claire Wrobel
Abstract: Margaret Atwood’s dystopias extrapolate from current trends, showing them as fully operational in the near future. They register the advent of ever-more intrusive surveillance in an increasingly digital culture which targets personal data. Characters who experience surveillance in local contexts, however, draw on a number of resistance strategies to keep control over personal data and take advantage of surveillance systems’ ironic weaknesses.

  • Literature, Resistance, and Visibility: “Draupadi,” by
           Mahasweta Devi, in Translation

    • Authors: Cielo G. Festino, Liliam Cristina Marins
Abstract: This article aims to analyze how resistance is articulated in literary and intercultural translations. In this regard, we take into consideration ideological perspectives in language use, narrative styles, and translation strategies as discussed by Esteves (2014), Sobral (2008) and Almeida (2011) to analyze the story “Draupadi,” by Mahasweta Devi, as well as its translation into English by Gayatri Spivak (1981).

  • The Counter-Cultural Art of Dealing with Dirt: The Balmain Group’s
           Sexual Revolution in Print

    • Authors: Jean-François Vernay
Abstract: In the 1970s, the loosening of the censorship laws and sexual mores enabled the countercultural Balmain Group to indulge in libertine literary representations which opened up new perspectives in Australian literature. Among them, let us mention freedom of sexual expressiveness, the broadening of the Australian erotic fiction repertoire, the addition of a new dimension to realism, daring depictions of alternative lifestyles and sexualities, the challenging of mainstream heteronormativity, the expression of a subversive counter-culture, the expansion of the boundaries of the Australian novel genre. These new approaches to sexuality, as evidenced by explicit sex scenes probing a wide range of sexual practices, have shaped a sexual revolution in print and a counter-cultural art of dealing with dirt (understood as licentious subject-matter) which my paper will try to conceptualise. I shall restrict my scope to material published in the 1970s by analysing the prose written by some of the ...

  • “Into the mutation”: Osahon Ize-Iyamu’s “More Sea than Tar”
           (2019) as Climate Fiction

    • Authors: Cédric Courtois
Abstract: In this paper, Nigerian author Osahon Ize-Iyamu’s 2019 short story “More Sea than Tar” is used as a template for “Climate Fiction.” This ecodystopian short story is read within the broader category of speculative fiction and is part of an emerging stream of dystopian fiction from Nigeria and Africa more generally. I first analyse the poetics and politics of the “African Anthropocene” through a close reading of the text and through references to other writers and philosophers’ works. Then, the question of vulnerability is raised, as Ize-Iyamu puts forward an environment that has become unfamiliar and hostile, in order for the readers to “experience fear in their guts.” Finally, I study how Ize-Iyamu weaves both resilience and hope into his narrative in order to counterbalance the sinister atmosphere. Despite the “ecodystopian” environment, there are dreams of a better world, and strategies of survivalism that are put in place. “More Sea than Tar” can also be read as a cautionary tale...

  • Transatlantic Post-Apocalyptic Fiction: Frank Owen’s South (2016) and
           North (2018) and Lauren Beukes’s Afterland (2020)

    • Authors: Mélanie Joseph-Vilain
Abstract: This article compares fictional representations of post-catastrophe worlds in dystopian novels by South African authors Frank Owen and Lauren Beukes, who have chosen to set their fictional representations of a bleak future in the United States of America. The article interrogates this choice and, more generally, the way in which South, North and Afterland articulate the global and the local in their imagined dystopias.

  • Flair Donglaishi and Gareth Guangming Tan, eds., World Literature in
           Motion: Institution, Recognition, Location

    • Authors: Nishit Kumar
Abstract: World Literature in Motion: Institution, Recognition, Location is a significant addition to the field of World Literature. It is a collection of essays envisioning World Literature as a dynamic process that the editors, Flair Donglai Shi and Gareth Guangming Tan, describe as a two-fold “motion” (27) in terms of movement, mediation and mobility, and of proposal and discussion. Furthermore, it proposes a distinct approach amid a number of existing methods and opinions within the discipline. The book brings together fifteen essays, written on a variety of themes and regions, all concerning the formation of World Literature. These essays are distributed into four sections. In the first section, “Postcolonial Studies,” we are presented with essays by Rivkah Brown, Katelyn Edwards, Meleesha Bardolia, and editor Gareth Guangming Tan, representing the role of the Zimbabwe International Book Fair and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the producti...

  • Jaydip Sarkar and Rupayan Mukherjee, eds. Partition Literature and Cinema:
           A Critical Introduction

    • Authors: Bhawana Jain
Abstract: Almost seven decades after the Partition of India in 1947, which Gyanendra Pandey calls “a moment of rupture and genocidal violence” (2004, 1), one witnesses the publication of a plethora of works of fiction which have attempted to reconstruct the event through multiple voices, languages and points of view. Literature and films on the Partition could indeed be seen as a “site for memorialisation of the human tragedy [which offer] a counter to official histories” (4). The edited volume Partition Literature and Cinema: A Critical Introduction (2020), which brings together critical works on the fictional representation(s) of the Partition and its aftermath, reiterates the necessity of analysing it through regional and locality-specific lenses and not just from a nationalistic perspective. The use of the expression “an alternative archive of the Partition of India” in the title of the introduction to the book invites readers to perceive the Partition not only as a horrendous historical e...
