  • Neither mechanical nor premature: deindustrialization and the New
           International Division of Labour (1970-2019)

    • Authors: Juan M. Graña, Lucas Terranova
      Pages: 11 - 46
Abstract: This article studies the economic determinants – wage and productivity levels – behind the deindustrialization trends of 24 countries divided into three groups (“Developed”, “East Asia”, “Latin America”) for the period 1970–2019. The data shows that deindustrialization, regardless of the country’s level of income, is linked to lower wages in other countries. These determinants explain the origin of this worldwide phenomenon since the new international division of labour, the impact on both developed and developing countries in Latin America, and also the successive waves of industrializing countries in East Asia.

  • Structural change and industrial transformation in Brazil, Chile and
           Uruguay

    • Authors: Maria Cecilia Lara Martínez
      Pages: 47 - 77
Abstract: Since the second half of the twentieth century, structuralism and other theoretical perspectives have emphasized the decisive role of structural change in order to explain the relative performance of Latin American economies. Recent works have also contributed to the debate over why some regions were able to develop and others were not, through explaining the structural change. The main aim of this research is to study whether structural transformation in manufacturing occurred using a shift-share analysis. The results show that Brazil is one of the three Latin American countries studied which managed to reduce its structural heterogeneity during the industrialization period, measured by the shift-share analysis.

  • Reconsidering automotive development strategies in Argentina in the light
           of the ASEAN experience

    • Authors: Rodrigo Pérez Artica, Javier Ignacio Pérez Ibáñez, Bruno Perez Almansi
      Pages: 79 - 113
Abstract: We compared the Argentinian automotive industry’s trajectory since 2000 with those corresponding to three ASEAN economies: Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. We aimed to identify factors explaining the divergence among the four cases and to draw valuable conclusions for the re-design of Argentinian automotive policy. First, we considered the productive and foreign trade performance among the four cases. We then reviewed key industrial policies conducted over the period. Comparative analysis highlights the Thai experience, which posted outstanding performance on both industrial expansion and trade surplus. Moreover, we examined the high potential for selective policies incentivizing specific products and technologies, which can promote private strategies more aligned with macroeconomic stability and industrial development in Argentina.

  • Supporting colonial economic policy during early Francoism: The Peninsular
Delegation of the Spanish Continental Guinea Wood Syndicate

    • Authors: Juan Carlos Guerra Velasco, Henar Pascual Ruiz-Valdepeñas
      Pages: 115 - 142
Abstract: During Francoism, especially its autarkic stage, Spanish colonialism in equatorial Africa found a fundamental ally in the Spanish Continental Guinea Wood Syndicate and its Peninsular Delegation. From 1936, all of the colony’s forest concessionaires were obligated to join. More studies are needed to reflect the role certain institutions played in Spanish colonialism during this period. This paper contributes to filling this gap by studying the activity behind the work of the Peninsular Delegation – the sale of wood. It is argued that this trade was marked by an intention. It reveals the relations, understandings, distances and antagonisms woven around the colonial project and economy, while helping to understand the complex regulatory framework that the autarky applied to the use of colonial wood.

  • The transformation of the Turkish defence Industry from the time of the
Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, 1834-1950

    • Authors: Enes Kurt, Yasin Şehitoğlu
      Pages: 143 - 174
Abstract: This study examines the transformation of the Turkish defence industry between the years 1834 and 1950, defining periods to reveal the structure and conditions of the industry over that time. We identify the first period, which took place from 1834 to 1923, as one of “Modernization efforts and import dependency”; in this period, modernization efforts began and state initiatives introduced the steam engine to the Turkish defence industry. Activities undertaken during this period met with limited success, and towards the end of the century, the defence industry became completely dependent on imports. We identify the second period, which took place between the years 1923 and 1950, as one of “Domestic production efforts”; in this period, especially in Ataturk’s time (1923-1938), Turkey sought to establish local industry and an industrialist class with close ties to the state. That industrial policy came to an end following British military aid, World War II, and Turkey’s entry to NATO.
