  • Introduction

    • Authors: Jordi Planella Ribera, Héctor Rolando Chaparro
      Pages: 9 - 11

  • The body in history

    • Authors: João Gomes Junior
      Pages: 12 - 24
Abstract: The objective of this article is to carry out a brief bibliographic review on Body Studies in History, proposing a reflection on the historiography of the body and its consequences in the studies of gender and sexualities. I cover various discourses already produced about the body and its senses in different historical periods, demonstrating a possibility of bringing historiography and Body Studies closer together, in addition to making some considerations about methodological work with sources and documents for the body.

  • A death in the movie “August Winds”

    • Authors: Fabio Zoboli, Fernando Gonçalves Bitencourt, Cristiano Mezzaroba
      Pages: 26 - 40
Abstract: In this article we operate a film analysis of the Brazilian feature film “Ventos de Agosto” – “August Winds” (2014), by director Gabriel Mascaro, in which it is possible to observe the dimension of death as a dialogical issue of the film, allowing us to treat, from the presence of the dead body, the social uses of the body. Thus, although its power is the aesthetic dimension, the film narrative allows us to reflect, anthropologically, on the body institutionalized by the provisions of Law and Medicine, making explicit the governance of bodies (alive and dead) for their political uses.

  • (Not so) docile bodies

    • Authors: Manoel Ruiz Corrêa Martins
      Pages: 41 - 56
Abstract: The rock and counterculture youth bodies became leading figures in the years post WWII. They reached that position in despite of all the coercion and censorship methods implemented by the disciplinary techniques and civilizing processes of the modern western society. Our article aims to discuss that process, verifying how general behavior, including movements and gestures, as well as ideas and representations of rock, constituted an ideal path to release accumulated social tensions.

  • The borders of an imaginary body

    • Authors: Thiago Venicius de Sousa Costa, Lorena Maria de França Ferreira
      Pages: 58 - 74
Abstract: In this article, we study Georgina Martins work The boy who played at being (2000), investigating how gender, body and identity are addressed in the universe of children’s literature. The analysis emphasizes the playfulness of being from the character Dudu, who has an unconventional taste for copy by imitating characters from fair tales – usually of the opposite sex. A situation that accentuated problems of male-female borders and highlighted the potential of the imaginary in the production of new subjectivities.

  • The way of sorrows of the travesti body in "A inevitável história de
           Letícia Diniz"

    • Authors: Luiz Henrique Moreira Soares
      Pages: 75 - 94
Abstract: This article analyzes the construction of the travesti body in the novel A inevitável história de Letícia Diniz (2006), by the Rio de Janeiro writer Marcelo Pedreira. Through concepts from queer approaches and contemporary literary theories, it focuses on how the novel articulates narration as a constitutive aspect of travesti identity, and also highlights problems (historical, social and cultural) around the cis-heteronormative look at travesti corporealities in Brazilian literature.

  • "With silks I killed and with irons I died"

    • Authors: Miguel Rodrigues de Sousa Neto
      Pages: 96 - 115
Abstract: This article seeks to understand the disputes about the corps performed through their classification, based on abjection and which has the consequence of violence directed at a large portion of the LGBT + population in Brazil, notably from religious, medical and legal discourse. The discursive processes lead to subjects' hierarchical practices and subjection based on gender experiences and erotic practices takes that into account other markers of difference, such as the racialization of bodies and economic class, seen in the two cases analyzed here: that of Febronio Indio do Brasil and that of Dandara dos Santos. The violence observed in Brazil has different degrees, but includes injury, torture, incarceration and physical elimination.

  • Conceptions of the body in multi and intercultural contexts

    • Authors: Héctor Rolando Chaparro, Juan Pablo Zebadúa, Karla Chacón Reynosa
      Pages: 116 - 129
Abstract: This article reviews the conceptual constraints that weigh on multiculturalism and interculturality, in general, as forms of pluralism that manifest themselves from the cultural diversity observed in the cultural processes of contemporary reality. Interculturality is analyzed, based on diversity, understood as a cognitive scenario where intercultural conflicts are arbitrated. Be part of the multiculturalism approach to understand how the diversities are dynamized from their social and political connotations, and then reach interculturality, as another approach but now of cultural interaction and dialogue that tries to overcome the schematic view of the multiple condition of societies, to move to a situation of construction of intercultural processes as forms of encounters and disputes for inclusion. To analyze these processes, three major fields of intercultural reflection are indicated: the philosophical, the model and the dialogical, which situates the concept as part of a transversal perspective that can address different cultural problems and, at the same time, proposes interculturality as a field of study of such importance for the understanding of current realities from that point of view. Finally, we try to conceptualize the body to point out its commitment as an emergent cultural process, which is built on the conflict and collects the difference in the coexistence between cultures. The importance of multiculturalism and interculturality in the analysis of cultural diversity, social inclusion, and collective identities is enhanced in order to make them visible in the body as an authentic material and symbolic intercultural creator, the place of the intersection of flows, tensions and contradictions of the intercultural process, always precarious.

  • Los Bodies during the processes of initial formation in physical education

    • Authors: Mariel Ruiz, Paula Pisano Casala
      Pages: 131 - 151
Abstract:  We are interested in the bodies during the processes of initial formation in physical education. How they are presented, observed and understood in these experiences, taking into account the discursive practices that occur (specific didactics) and the body knowledge that is produced. Intention that responds to the need of unravelling the discursive and power effects on the bodies that, despite the criticisms of immobility, the lack of focus and coherence between theory and practice (Cebreiro, 1995) are still perpetuated.

    • Authors: Juan Manuel Engelman, Ayelén Rocío Soledad Di Biase
      Pages: 167 - 182
Abstract: According to the analysis of two urban indigenous organizations: the "Consejo Indígena Almirante Brown" -of Bueno Aires- and the "Consejo de Lonkos" -of La Pampa-, this paper explores the articulation between ethnicity and State. We will investigate the strategies that both councils carried out to increase local visibility and political participation in the municipal structure to rethink the processes of negotiation, scope and resistance of indigenous political practice.

  • Manumissions in Jatahy’s notary journals

    • Authors: Lucas Rodrigues do Carmo, Murilo Borges Silva
      Pages: 183 - 196
Abstract: This paper aims to analyze letters of freedom registered in the notary journals of the First Notary’s Office of Jataí  between 1872 – opening year of the Notary’s Office – and 1888 – year of slavery abolition in Brazil. We intend to outline
manumitted people profile, highlighting sex, age and color, as well as to elucidate the relationship between masters and enslaved people, noticing political strategies regarding freedom negotiation and registered manumissions forms: conditional, free or bought. Therefore, we aim to understand slavery dynamics in Jataí, in dialogue with the historiography produced on the topic in Goiás and other regions of Brazil.

  • Transiting Bodies

    • Authors: Marco Aurelio Barsanelli de Almeida
      Pages: 197 - 203
Abstract: The book Bodies in transit: existences, subjectivities and representativeness, edited by Antonio Ricardo Calori de Lion and Aguinaldo Rodrigues Gomes, presents us, in its 408 pages, a sequence of twenty articles, divided into three distinct parts: Existences / Resistances; Subjectivities and self-reinventions; and (In) visibilities and representativeness.
