  • The Initial Deployment of the Homeschooling Social Movement in Spain

    • Authors: Patricia Quiroga Uceda
      Pages: 103 - 118
Abstract: This paper aims to studying in historical perspective the beginning of the social movement of homeschooling in Spain. It begins by analyzing the way in which the ideas of authors such as Ivan Illich arrived in the 1970s. Later, attention is paid to three bulletins, Aprender sin Escuela (1989-1993), Buzón (1993-1997) and Crecer sin Escuela (1997-2005), which served as a reference to organize a movement that rejected schooling. The paper focuses in the intellectual figures who developed a central rol in the initial deployment of the movement. The detailed study of these publications highlights the objectives that the homeschooling/unschooling promoted since its beginning in Spain: to share experiences, to promote networking, to spread education at home and to internationalize this pedagogical alternative.

  • Social, pedagogy and proselitism action in the catholic workers´ circles:
music and artistic education in the first social catholicism in Spain
           (1875 – ca. 1900)

    • Authors: Jorge Ramón Salinas, Carmen M Zavala Arnal
      Pages: 119 - 141
Abstract: The Catholic Workers’ Circles became from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, among other initiatives, authentic social movements for education, more or less innovative. His pedagogical action, although instrumentalized by the Church, constituted in his moment an alternative to the inability of the public administrations to defuse certain unresolved social assistance and educational needs. The aim of this article is to highlight the educational action carried out by the Catholic Circles in the first stage of Social Catholicism, roughly coinciding with the First Restoration and the first decade of the 20th century. These societies arose as a response to the social issue and to the problematic situation of the Church in the nineteenth century, a time of crisis for the institution in which it sought to adapt to the new liberal becoming of the times. Among the idiosyncrasies and essential tasks of the Catholic Circles - assistance, ideological, corporate, etc. - stands out its cultural and educational dimension that, despite being imbued by a proselytizing duty, they were going to offer diverse educational training to the most disadvantaged sectors of Spanish society. In this sense, particular attention is given to the teaching of plastic and music education. In the latter, we will highlight the instrumental vocal praxis, concretized essentially in the creation of choirs, bands of music and rondallas, as the most significant materializations.

  • Pursuing justice for women: The consummate qualities of Ruth Gibson
(1901-1972) as teacher, inspector and international activist

    • Authors: Kay Whitehead
      Pages: 143 - 161
Abstract: This article aims to elucidate the qualities of a successful teacher and school inspector, namely Gladys Ruth Gibson (1901-1972), in a highly bureaucratic Australian education department. Using a feminist theoretical framework and traditional archival research into correspondence files, newspapers and documents from relevant organisations, the article traces Gibson’s schooling and career in the South Australian education department as a teacher and school inspector, intertwined with her feminist activism in teachers unions and women’s organisations. Successfully negotiating the entrenched structural inequalities between men and women in the education department, Gibson ascended the «service ladder» by demonstrating qualities such as pedagogical expertise, scholarship, cultural attainments and commitments to professional service to become a school inspector. The same qualities underpinned her feminist activism. Although relegated to a relatively lowly position as an inspector in the education department’s senior management, Gibson’s leadership and commitment to the advancement of women expanded exponentially when she served as president of the National Council of Women, being the peak organisation for Australian women, and as a vice-president of the International Council of Women. In essence, Ruth Gibson was a consummate teacher-inspector-activist in her pursuit of justice for women in the mid-twentieth century.
