  • Gold Wings and Brown Boots: The Organization of the Army ROTC at Marshall
           University

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The 1902 Marshall College catalog contains a photograph of young men in uniform standing in front of Old Main, the College's academic and administrative building. The caption reads, "Cadet Corps in front of College Hall." Other photos of student organizations and "boarding clubs" in the catalog show young men in the same uniform. A single paragraph in the Herald Advertiser relates that college president L. J. Corbly was petitioning state legislators to form a corps of cadets at the college.1 In the May 1902 edition of the Parthenon, the college student newspaper, another few sentences relate the arrival of the cadets' uniforms and the fact that one of the colleges' female boarding clubs enjoyed coming to campus to ... • The Hanging of David Creigh: The Civil War and Union War Policies in a
           Southern Appalachian Community

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In November 1863, David Creigh killed a Union soldier who robbed his home in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Seven months later, in June 1864, federal officials convicted Creigh of murder and sentenced him to be executed. A slaveholder and the father of a Confederate soldier, Creigh, unaware of his imminent death, hoped to see his family again. Union Army officials, however, ensured the family's earthly separation. Creigh wrote to his wife before his execution and confided that, after he had eaten his supper, he was "taken into a house and the sentence pronounced that I was to be hung." Creigh's Christian faith allowed him to meet his death with peace and instilled in him a belief that he would meet his wife and twelve ... Read More

  • Unnatural Resources: Energy and Environmental Politics in Appalachia after
the 1973 Oil Embargo by Michael Camp (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The 1970s were a transformational time for US energy policy. Beginning, as it did, with an emphasis on environmental protection, the decade ended quite differently. In the intervening years, the country saw an oil embargo, fuel shortages, and rapidly rising energy prices. Dependence on cheap, foreign oil became undeniable, and energy independence crowded out environmental issues in political saliency. Michael Camp's Unnatural Resources: Energy and Environmental Politics in Appalachia after the 1973 Oil Embargo explores the politics of energy during this tumultuous decade. Using examples from resource-rich Appalachia, the book illustrates how efforts to prioritize domestic energy became entangled in local political ... Read More

  • Gone Home: Race and Roots through Appalachia by Karida L. Brown (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Dr. Karida L. Brown's book is a thoughtful journey from the Deep South to the coalfields of Kentucky and beyond. Reading it feels like you are sitting on the porch with your grandparents and your aunts and uncles as they regale you with stories of their growing-up years as you sip on homemade sweet tea. In this volume, Dr. Brown explores the lived experiences of Black women and men who grew up in coal country. The tri-city area of Lynch, Benham, and Cumberland is located in Harlan County, a mountainous region in the southeastern corner of the state of Kentucky. Both Lynch and Benham are coal company towns.Dr. Brown weaves together research with the voices of Lynch and Benham natives utilizing over 150 oral ... Read More

  • Appalachia in Regional Context: Place Matters ed. by Dwight B. Billings
           and Ann E. Kingsolver (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Place matters. It matters now as much as ever. And its salience to issues such as mass incarceration, white supremacy, asylum denial, worker disenfranchisement, and climate precarity—to name but a few—should not be overlooked. This work by Dwight B. Billings and Ann E. Kingsolver—first released in hardcover in 2018 and then in paperback in 2020—does not make that mistake. It instead situates place as a sophisticated contextual lens that helps readers make sense of issues that span the globe and that continue to shape our daily lives. The editors importantly see place as action, and they note that "it is about what people do—in one way or another, in concert, contestation, or consternation—as they try to make sense ... Read More

  • All This Marvelous Potential: Robert Kennedy's 1968 Tour of Appalachia by
           Matthew Algeo (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In All This Marvelous Potential: Robert Kennedy's 1968 Tour of Appalachia, Matthew Algeo presents a detailed account of two days Kennedy spent in eastern Kentucky while he pondered a presidential run. The trip occurred at a "pivotal moment in American history—the Tet Offensive had launched just weeks before" (xiv). In brief chapters, Algeo provides snapshots of the events of the tour, glimpses of the national political and cultural context, and digressions on issues facing the region. At the heart of this tour were two hearings of the Senate Subcommittee on Employment, Manpower, and Poverty that Kennedy held, one on February 13 in a one-room schoolhouse in the town of Vortex and the other the next day in the ... • Death in Mud Lick: A Coal Country Fight against the Drug Companies That
Delivered the Opioid Epidemic by Eric Eyre (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: While the opioid epidemic has raged across the nation, attentions lately have turned to Appalachia, where the people of the region have been hardest hit with the issue. Eric Eyre, the Pulitzer Prize winner for Investigating Reporting, weaves the tale of the battle those in southern West Virginia waged against the source of the epidemic itself. Death in Mud Lick, the culmination of nearly fifteen years of Eyre's reporting for the Charleston Gazette newspaper in Charleston, West Virginia, brings to light the full story of the state's battle against the pharmaceutical distributors of name brand drugs like Oxycontin, Lortab, and other potent opioid drugs that ravaged the people of the region. This battle, Eyre says ... Read More
