  • Arthur from the Margins: Race, Equity, and Justice in Arthurian Studies

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: These past two years have given us an unprecedented number of occurrences, domestic and international, that remind us that conversations centered on race, hate, and bigotry—and their impact on civility and human decency—must never end. As we assemble this special issue of Arthuriana, parts of the world watch another tumultuous crisis in the Middle East, just as we embark on the one-year anniversary of witnessing the type of police savagery that remains unceasing throughout much of the United States. We also write at the mark of the one-hundred-year anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre, where white mobs decimated a wealthy Black community, not only causing human casualties and structural damage, but also inciting an ... Abstract: ‘[W]hat are the means of counting costs' And who is not a breather'’1‘[P]olitics is swiftly becoming something that is inhaled, rather than something that occurs on the ground.’2To engage matters of Arthur is to confront matters of race. It is to enter a fragile atmosphere that sustains a comfort zone of cultural reception for some, but which also creates an unbreathable space of racial violence for others.Since 2015, I have taught Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant in an undergraduate survey of Arthurian literature course; the class is open to all students across the disciplines seeking to fulfill their humanities requirements for graduation at a predominantly white institution.3 Over several years, some ... • Romans, Celts, and ‘Others’: Residual Colonial Models and Race in
           Contemporary Arthurian Novels

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The aftermath of Britain’s abandonment by the Romans, as narrated in the writings of Nennius, Gildas, and Geoffrey of Monmouth, provides a quasi-historical framework for modern writers, who then use nineteenth-century colonial models of society in creating settings for their Arthurian novels.1 In one prominent subset of Arthurian novels written between 1963 and 2014, those written by Rosemary Sutcliff (1920–1992) or influenced by her fiction, the ‘Arthurian world’ bears a striking resemblance to the nineteenth-century colonialism found in Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Roman’ section of Puck of Pook’s Hill.2 In Sutcliff’s model, once it is clear that there will be no military help from Rome for its British colonies (c.410–411 ... • Writing Arthur’s Shadow and Speaking Otherwise

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: But now there was a fourth landscape, City/World, where the body/soul/mind shaped in the others’ dreams would come to life. Though the piece was not performed, the Knight was the character who’d emerged from the process unbidden. At some point, the celebrated fantasy writer N.K. Jemisin had a change of heart. In a blog post, ‘How Long ’til Black History Month,’ that would later become the seed for a collection of short stories, Jemisin laid out in the plainest possible terms the poverty of imagination implicit in a wide swath of fantasy fiction writing: the genre was home to ‘too many white supremacist medieval Europes.’1 More broadly, she critiqued the toxicity of fantasy fiction in how it constructs the ‘normalcy’ ... • Broken Dreams: Medievalism, Mulataje, and Mestizaje in the Work of
           Alejandro Tapia y Rivera

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Medieval ‘revivals’ have infiltrated Puerto Rico by several distinct means. First, they migrated from Spain (and the rest of Europe) and Latin America to Puerto Rico; later, they would come through nineteenth and twentieth-century medievalism from Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Finally, they came through films, role-playing games, videogames, and comics, mainly from U.S. popular culture. In tandem with these medieval incursions, were the colonizing efforts of Spain and the United States. While it is not surprising that medievalism would arrive with colonization, what was unforeseen and is still understudied today, is that medievalism has been steadily reconceptualized by Puerto Rican writers as a ... • ‘Many straunge sygnes and tokyns’: The Affective Power of Thomas
           Malory’s Palomides

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: John Lydgate’s minor poem ‘A Complaynte of a Lovers Lyfe’ is often dismissed as one of his many not-quite-successful attempts at Chaucerian fanfiction, in this case for The Book of the Duchess. But there was one unusual detail that caught my attention as a reader of Arthurian literature. The Black Knight, whom Lydgate’s narrator spies upon and whose complaint he records, launches into a catalogue of unfortunate lovers done in by ‘falshede,’ beginning with Palamides. He is introduced as ‘the trwe man, the noble worthy knyght/That ever loved, and of hys peyne no relese,’ done in by a combination of ‘envye’ and unrequited passion.1 According to the Black Knight, love kindled in Palamides a kind of death wish—‘to his ... Watching one filmic Arthurian production after another issued by Hollywood—from the nostalgic musical Camelot to the epic-minded Excalibur—and musing over the sci-fi comic-book series Camelot 3000 while seeing Marion Zimmer Bradley’s quasi-feminist The Mists of Avalon get turned into a television series, and Roger Zelazny’s ‘The Last Defender of Camelot’ become an episode of The Twilight Zone, I asked ...            Société Internationale Arthurienne ed. by C. Girbea et al (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This collection represents several important, and sadly infrequent, developments in the field of Arthurian studies and of medieval studies more broadly. It comprises the conference proceedings from the 2015 Congress of the International Arthurian Society in Bucharest: a conference that is rarely held outside of Western Europe and North America. In addition, it is truly bilingual in English and French, with French contributions slightly outnumbering English ones, rather than the more common obverse, and a significant number of contributors in both languages are from institutions in neither Anglophone nor Francophone locations. The volume, which runs to over four hundred pages, covers a breadth of Arthurian fields ... Read More

  • Afterlives of the Lady of Shalott and Elaine of Astolat by Ann F. Howey
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Afterlives of the Lady of Shalott and Elaine of Astolat by Ann F. Howey takes as the introductory focal point Meg Cabot’s teen novel Avalon High (2006). This novel is loosely based on two early nineteenth-century poems by Alfred Tennyson: The Lady of Shalott and Elaine of Astolat. Howey’s purpose, therefore, is to list other creative writers/artists/musicians, etc., who have treated Tennyson’s story. An extensive Table One presents a timeline from 1805 to 2014, naming editions of Malory/medieval texts and versions of The Lady of Shalott in verse, prosefiction, painting, book illustration, sculpture, music, wall-tiles, tapestry, and cross-stitch. And Howey’s overall approach is ‘feminist’ (p. 3).Chapter Two focuses ... Read More

  • Männliche Hauptfiguren im ‘Tristan’ Gottfrieds von Strassburg.
Charakterisierung, Konstellation und Rede by Anna Karin (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the published version of her dissertation, Anna Karin provides a series of close readings centered on verbal and non-verbal communication in the thirteenth-century Tristan by Gottfried von Strassburg. The ‘primary male figures’ [männliche Hauptfiguren] referred to in the monograph’s title are Tristan, a knight, courtier, and minstrel, and King Marke, Tristan’s uncle, sovereign, and husband of their shared love interest, Isolde. Karin presents these two figures as polar opposites in how, what, and why they communicate. Tristan is ‘the director, who calls the shots’ [der Regisseur, der die Anweisungen gibt] (p. 260), exploiting courtly discourse and conventions as he assumes myriad different roles. Marke, by ... • From Iceland to the Americas: Vinland and Historical Imagination ed. by
Tim William Machan and Jón Karl Helgason (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The contributions in From Iceland to the Americas do not read like occasional papers, the occasion here being a conference on the subject held at the University of Notre Dame in September of 2018. As the Preface tells us, it was the volume (its chapters presented in their penultimate versions) that gave rise to the conference, and not the other way around. This fact might raise readers’ expectations for the quality of what they are about to read, and they would not be disappointed: the individual contributions to this volume are without exception thoughtfully composed essays, reflective of deep consideration of their topic. The book as a whole coheres around a single fact: Leif Eiriksson’s visit to Vinland in the ... Read More

           Corinna Wagner (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: There is a formula to the Oxford Handbooks, and it is a winning formula on evidence in this volume. The editors have gathered thirty-nine essays by experts in diverse areas of Victoriana to offer a comprehensive overview of the rich expressions of medievalism that the period affords across multiple genres and disciplines. The essays themselves are grouped into six sections. Part I: ‘Medievalism before 1750’ includes ‘King Arthur and the Tudor Dynasty’ by Philip Schwyzer, ‘Old English and Old Norse Studies to the Eighteenth Century’ by Timothy Graham, ‘Validating the English Church’ by Graham Parry, and ‘The Diggers and the Norman Yoke’ by Clare A. Simmons.Part II: ‘Romantic Period Medievalism’ includes ‘The Ballad ... Read More
