  • (Inter)subjectivisation et chaines sémantiques dans les adverbes
français en–ment: analyse du passage de l'adverbe intégré à la
           proposition au marqueur discursif

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We would like to thank two people this year for going above and beyond for the Canadian linguistic community.First, we would like to thank Bronwyn Bjorkman for her exceptional commitment to the CLA. This is evident in all the extra organizational work that she has done for both the 2020 and 2021 online CLA meetings. Bronwyn has made our meetings not only possible and seamlessly-run, but also fun and a joy to attend. In addition to this work, Bronwyn has been central in the running of many other conferences and works tirelessly to ensure that linguistics events are accessible to all.We would also like to thank Daniel Currie Hall for his exceptional commitment to the CLA. Daniel has run the CLA website for 11 years ... Read More

Abstract: https://doi.org/10.1017/cnj.2021.23. Published by Cambridge University Press, 3 August 2021In the following passage of the article by Álvarez-Prendes (2021), the year was omitted from a citation of an article by Heine et al. (1991). This correction has been made.Il ne reste à présent qu'à examiner les mécanismes linguistiques grâce auxquels ces processus ont été ... • Negation and Negative Concord: The view from creoles ed. by Viviane
           Déprez and Fabiola Henri (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The central concern of this volume is to show how the different types of Negative Concord manifest themselves in Creole languages. Creoles offer an unprecedented field of study not only for Creolists but also for theoretical, historical, socio-, and psycholinguistic research. The kind of simplification of syntactic forms that characterizes Creoles reflects the creative power of the human brain, bringing about structures that can be acquired by Creole children more easily than can be the structures of the lexifier language (see Holm 2002).Negative Concord (NC) is a straightforward example of this creative power. The term itself refers to contructions wherein multiple negative items co-occur without rendering the ... Read More

Abstract: Dr. Heather Bliss is an early career researcher who has made original and important contributions in research across a number of subfields, including syntax, morphology, phonetics, and language documentation and revitalization. At the same time, she has had lasting impacts in the areas of knowledge translation, community engagement, and policy surrounding Indigenous languages in Canada, particularly for Blackfoot, an Algonquian language.Dr. Bliss received her Ph.D. in linguistics from UBC in 2013, after completing her BA and MA at the University of Calgary. She is currently a Lecturer at Simon Fraser University, and she holds adjunct positions at the University of Calgary, at UBC, and at the University of Victoria. ... Read More

  • Situations and syntactic structures: Rethinking auxiliaries and order in
English by Gillian Catriona Ramchand (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This foundational book is concerned with important issues in natural language ontology, as well as with the nature of the syntax-semantics interface. A major goal is a more precise understanding of how compositional semantics can be integrated with the syntax and morphology of human languages. The empirical facts come from classical problems in the verbal domain, through a carefully worked-out examination of (modal) auxiliaries in the grammar of English. The investigation takes as its starting point an important observation related to the templatic organization of verbal material. With almost no exceptions, natural languages present an order in which tense and aspect are hierarchically outside the core verbal ... Read More

  • The person-animacy connection: Evidence from Algonquian and Dene

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This squib presents evidence from the Algonquian and Dene language families to support a connection between person and animacy. A range of morphosyntactic patterns in these languages, including pronoun inventories, agreement restrictions, and hierarchy effects, are argued to indicate that inanimate nominals lack formal person features. This proposal allows the morphosyntactic patterning of inanimates to fall out from grammatical principles that are independently required to account for person effects. We conclude that the often-assumed model in which third persons are "personless" must be revised to allow for languages in which only inanimate third persons lack formal person features. The squib is organized as ... • Anaphoric binding in Modern Standard Arabic: A phase-based analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Two widely accepted constraints in generative syntax restricting the distribution of anaphors and pronouns are Chomsky's (1981) Principle A and Principle B of the binding theory. These are given in (1), from Chomsky (1981: 188), Chomsky (1986: 166).(1) Binding theoryPrinciple A: An anaphor is bound in a local domain (its governing category).Principle B: A pronominal is free in a local domain (its governing category).1The local domain for an anaphor is characterized as the minimal finite clause (TP) containing the anaphor, its antecedent and its governor/Case marker (Chomsky 1981). Accordingly, an anaphor must have a binder within the minimal TP, as illustrated in (2a–b) from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).2(2)  ... Read More

  • The regularizing, analogical effect of metathesis in Modern Ch'ol (Mayan):
The cases of 7ejk'ach 'fingernail, claw' and 7ik'oty 'with, and'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Modern Ch'ol varieties exhibit two very interesting examples of metathesis in the terms 7ehk'ach 'fingernail, claw' and 7ik'oty 'with', both of them already noted by Hopkins et al. (2008). That metathesis has taken place in Ch'ol is clear from the comparative and historical linguistic data (Table 1), which shows that these Ch'ol forms stem from Proto-Ch'olan *7ihch'äk (∼ *7ehch'äk) 'fingernail, claw' and *7et'ok 'companion; with, and' (Kaufman and Norman 1984: 119, 138), respectively. An important fact is that Ch'ol attests to variation in the forms 7ik'oty ∼ 7ity'ok, a matter that is considered in this article. Hopkins et al. (2008: 89) also highlight an interesting aspect of these examples of metathesis, namely ... Read More

Abstract: Dr. John Archibald has demonstrated leadership in linguistics in Canada and has made substantial and distinguished contributions to language research over a significant period. He has exhibited innovation, and has impacted practice, policy, and the broader community; he has also been effective in communication and popularization beyond academia. In short, he is an extraordinary academic leader, educator and scholar who has made great contributions to the field within Canada and around the world.Dr. Archibald earned his Ph.D. in 1991 at the Modern Language Centre in O.I.S.E, after completing his BA and MA, also at the University of Toronto. • An illusory subject preference in Algonquian agreement

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The inflection of Algonquian transitive verbs includes an agreement suffix known as the central ending (Goddard 1969). The patterning of this suffix can ordinarily be described without reference to syntactic roles: the central ending indexes either (i) both arguments simultaneously or (ii) the argument with more richly specified phi-features. In certain contexts, however, the central ending instead appears to show a preference for indexing the subject, even when the subject's features are clearly less specified than those of the object (Xu 2016: 54–57, Bhatia et al. 2018). This exceptional subject preference is surprising to observe in an agreement slot that is otherwise conditioned purely by feature hierarchies ... Read More

  • Nobody there' On the non-existence of nobody in Mandarin Chinese and
           related issues

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Both Soh (2001, 2005) and Ko (2005: 883) use the contrast in (1a–b) below as the starting point for their respective analyses of wh-in-situ languages.1(1) Soh (2001, 2005) accounts for it in terms of an intervention effect (see Beck 1996), which prohibits wh-movement in LF over an intervening quantifier (including 'only' and negation). Further building on this and other observations, she argues that an adverbial wh-phrase in Mandarin Chinese such as wèishénme 'why' undergoes covert feature movement, while a nominal wh-phrase such as shéi 'who' or shénme 'what' undergoes covert phrasal movement.Ko (2005: 883) takes another stand and postulates that 'why' in wh-in-situ languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) is merged ... Abstract: Cheman Baira A Sangma (University of Calgary): "Garo gemination: A case of faithfulness producing non-moraic geminates"Cheman Baira Sangma gave an excellent talk on gemination in Garo, an underdocumented Sino-Tibetan language. It presented novel data with notable typological implications that were clearly laid out. The talk addressed big picture issues and generated many interesting questions around the conclusions. In the question period he demonstrated clear competence with respect to both the language facts and the theoretical issues.________Cheman Baira Sangma a donné une excellente présentation sur la gémination en garo, une langue sino-tibétaine sous-documentée.
