Abstract: American Periodicals rounds out its thirty-first year of publication with announcements about several exciting new features. To begin, we wish to direct readers' attention to our first-ever digital special issue from The Ohio State University Press and Project Muse. This inaugural issue, "Highlights from the Past and Spotlights on the Future of Periodical Studies," reprints articles curated from past issues of the journal, brought together in an invigorating new context. Essays from some of the giants of the field and founding members of the Research Society for American Periodicals—originally published in our twenty-fifth anniversary edition in 2015—pair with a commitment toward expansiveness and inclusivity that ... • Ralph Ellison, Partisan Review, and the Politics of the Page

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ralph Ellison's complicated relationship with the cosmopolitan magazine Partisan Review spans nearly five decades. While he did not publish "Invisible Man: Prologue to a Novel" in the magazine until 1952, Ellison was familiar with the publication and the work of its contributors through his involvement with other leftist magazines. Acting as the official literary organ of the John Reed Club of New York, Partisan Review's premier 1934 issue promised its readers that the magazine would "concentrate on creative and critical literature," focalized through "revolutionary working class" perspectives.1 In 1937 editors William Philips and Philip Rahv began to separate Partisan Review from communist periodicals like New ... • Christian Conversion Through Racial Exclusion: The Oriental; or, Tung-Ngai
San-Luk, the Second Chinese-Language Newspaper in the United States

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: During the antebellum era, San Francisco was the site of the first and largest number of Anglo-Chinese and Chinese-language newspapers in the United States. While census records are incomplete, the 1855 Annals of San Francisco estimated that in 1852 there were "between three and four thousand" Chinese people living in San Francisco.1 By 1860, the federal census estimated 2,719 Chinese in the city, with over seventy-five percent between 20 and 29 years of age.2 With this growing community of considerable youth compared to white populations at the time, the creation of ethnic neighborhoods like "Little China" in San Francisco began. "Little China" afforded the location for the launch and production of the Oriental; ... Read More

  • Charlotte Porter, Poet-Lore, and the Early Evolution of American
           Shakespeare Studies

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: While the editor, critic, and translator Charlotte Endymion Porter (1859–1942) has become increasingly known for her creative and scholarly endeavors, her important contributions to the growth of Shakespeare studies in the United States deserve additional and more precise recognition. She began her career editing Shakespeariana, the first American magazine devoted to Shakespeare, before in 1889 launching Poet-Lore with her co-editor and life partner, Helen A. Clarke (1860–1926). From its home near the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the innovative monthly situated the playwright's works—and their critical interpretation—within a broader dialogue about literary study and civic engagement. ... • Illustrating White Cannibals in Harper's Weekly: Adventure Fiction and
           Pictorial Journalism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Illustrations of cannibalism conducted by and upon supposedly civilized white people, to whom I refer as white cannibals, offer profound insights into the history of periodical illustration during the era of New Imperialism while also demonstrating the slippery, uneven effort in American print of confronting assumptions about white supremacy. Ideologically complex narratives involving white cannibalism that proliferated in late nineteenth-century fictional and nonfictional texts were deeply multimodal and cannot be disentangled from the graphic history of American periodicals. Existing scholarship concerning images of cannibalism has typically been limited to examinations of this horror as a proxy for European and ... Read More

  • Writing Across the Color Line: U. S. Print Culture and the Rise of Ethnic
Literature, 1877–1920 by Lucas A. Dietrich (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Writing Across the Color Line Lucas Dietrich utilizes the archival records of three commercial book publishers—J. B. Lippincott, Houghton Mifflin, and A. C. Mc-Clurg—to present case studies of multiethnic authors accessing the literary marketplace at the turn of the twentieth century. By examining the publication histories of works by Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Charles Chesnutt, Finley Peter Dunne, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Edith Maude Eaton/Sui Sin Far, Dietrich aims to recover the "arbitrations and exchanges" between authors of color, their white publishers, and the predominantly white readers whom these authors sought to influence. Each of these authors, Dietrich argues, "hoped to guide readers into awareness ... Read More

  • Jim Crow Networks: African American Periodical Cultures by Eurie Dahn
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Eurie Dahn's Jim Crow Networks: African American Periodical Cultures offers rich details about familiar authors and their imbrication in early twentieth-century print cultures. Dahn situates her work in relation to various theoretical frameworks, but two concepts seem especially important. First, as her title indicates, she draws on the burgeoning field of network studies. Recognizing that this term can be overly capacious, Dahn demonstrates its utility by showing how periodicals can be read as both intratextual and intertextual networks that connect readers, editors, authors, and texts, remarking that "it is precisely this ambiguity and edgelessness that makes the concept of networks useful in discussing ... • Literary Experiments in Magazine Publishing: Beyond Serialisation by
           Thomas Vranken (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Periodical studies have long sought to intervene in the formal practices of traditional literary studies. Its aims have been to go beyond close readings of a literary text to also consider its social context, the materiality of the medium in which it appears, and the surrounding paratext on and across the page. Extensive attention has also been given to analyzing the patterns and rhythm of magazine publication across space and time, in other words, serialization. A ground-breaking book on the topic was The Victorian Serial (University of Virginia Press, 1991) in which Linda Hughes and Michael Lund argued that serialization was intrinsic to Victorian society, reinforcing its "capitalist culture … conceptions of time ... • The Practice of Citizenship: Black Politics and Print Culture in the Early
United States by Derrick R. Spires (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Derrick Spires's comprehensive, wide-ranging analysis of citizenship in early African American print culture is a magnificent study in the field. It will stand among the milestone studies of early African American literature and print culture among this generation of scholars. His book positions African American ideas of citizenship between the American Revolution and Civil War as nuanced, protean, and evolving. He proposes the theory—brilliant, generative, carefully elaborated, and conversation-shifting—that African Americans claimed and constructed the role of citizenship as one entwined in action, in the process of doing everyday civil, political, familial, and commercial work in their communities. Writing to ... Read More

  • Twentieth-Century American Fiction in Circulation: Short Stories Written
for Magazines and Republished in Linked Story Collections by Matthew James
           Vechinski (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Matthew James Vechinski's Twentieth-Century American Fiction in Circulation explores the relationship between fiction published in magazines and its subsequent reissuing in linked story collections. Its combination of methodologies deriving from genetic criticism, reception studies, collecting theory, and periodical studies results in a salutary corrective to some blind spots of textual criticism and of scholarship on the short story cycle. Key here is Vechinski's insistence on the importance of magazine versions of fiction, which are too often disregarded by textual scholarship and literary criticism. Scholars in both disciplines tend to regard magazine publications as inferior forms—in effect, "drafts"—that are ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We are delighted to initiate a new addition to American Periodicals, the Scholarship Roundup. In this annual feature, we offer a list scholarly articles and books of interest to periodicals researchers published in the previous year, though our inaugural issue features scholarship published in both 2019 and 2020. The Scholarship Roundup provides a one-stop location for information about what is new in our field, allowing readers multiple avenues of scholarly entry: in this feature, you can find items you may have overlooked, watch trends, and draw connections. What we see when we survey the field of scholarship published in 2019 and 2020 is a diverse, creative, and engaging collection of research, all working ... Read More
