  • Restoration and ReVOlution: Decolonizing through Art

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The year is 2180. Atop the distant white sand hills, the sun's rays emanate from the horizon. Over the hilltop emerge the Aeronauts, a group of soldiers adorned in black uniforms with metallic sheen, feathered helmets, and black patent combat boots. The Aeronauts appear fierce and apocalyptic as they grip their swords, ready for battle. Their role, however, is to serve as protectors who cultivate, revive, preserve, and educate the people about the 1680 Pueblo Revolt (hereafter referred to as Revolt).1 The Aeronauts are futuristic characters, as is Tahu, the female leader of another group of soldiers called the Blind Archers. These figures from 2180 are joined by characters from the past: Po'Pay, the Ohkay Owingeh ... Read More

  • Becoming the Tsalagi Ayeli: Cherokee Nation Building in the Early Republic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the last thirty years, the concepts of Native nation building and Indigenous governance have been a rapidly growing focus in academic disciplines concerned with Indigenous peoples, especially those of North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Within Indigenous populations however, these concepts have been critical foci for millennia, playing an important role in determining the survival and continuance of cultures. The process of Native nation building is a crucial aspect of cultural survival and revitalization for Indigenous nations, and in many ways reflects a real-world example of Gerald Vizenor's concept of "Indigenous survivance." Native nations undertaking the nation building process assess their ... Read More

  • When Waters Rise and Rocks Speak: An Analysis of Indigenous Research
           Credential Theft by an Ally

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the stillness of my home before the sun rises, before my children, husband, and animals awake, I seek to make sense of the theft of my Indigenous research credentials by a non-Native former colleague. I return to a 2003 American Indian Quarterly special issue called "Native Experiences in the Ivory Tower." Dr. Inés Hernández Avila (Nez Perce/ Tejana) presented this issue to one of our Native American studies (NAS) graduate classes as a point of departure to discuss life after we left the protective walls of Hart Hall, the Ethnic studies building at the University of California, Davis. We discussed scenarios we will likely face as Native scholars and how our stories will dialogue with our predecessors, for better ... Read More

  • Time of Anarchy: Indigenous Power and the Crisis of Colonialism in Early
           America by Matthew Kruer (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Matthew Kruer's Time of Anarchy is a stunning intervention into our current understandings of settler-Indigenous relationships in the Colonial-era United States—specifically as it relates to the Virginia and Maryland colonies and interactions with the Susquehannock. In many ways, the book follows a familiar pattern—charting Indigenous history in relation/reaction to colonial interventions, rendering intercultural events as the most significant moments of Susquehannock history, and leaving the internal Susquehannock-specific history largely unexplored. At the same time, it asks us to reconsider how we understand the trajectory of seventeenth century Indian-white relations. Kruer quickly establishes the importance of ... Read More

  • Native Hoops: The Rise of American Indian Basketball 1895–1970 by
           Wade Davies (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: American Indian basketball has continued its prominence in Native sports as this book, Native Hoops, retraces its origins through dirt courts on the reservation, city basketball courts, and aging rims. Through extensive interviews and experiences of former players, Wade Davies provides the reader with a history lesson through the organization of American Indian basketball from 1985–1970. The book provides an analysis of talented Native players who molded this sport across our country to promote community pride, wellness, and playing strategies. As part of my review, I will take a holistic approach in addressing each of these aspects by incorporating the spiritual, mental, physical, and social well-being aspects of ... Read More
