Authors:Dan Healey, Francesca Stella Abstract: The past five years have witnessed an explosion of interest in the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in the Soviet Union and its successor states. This special issue extends our understanding of the history of queer experience in the late Soviet Union and its successor states. Its eight articles balance attention between the Russian “core” and republics on the “periphery” of the USSR: Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Latvia. One article draws attention to Italy, and to the 1970s transnational gay, artistic, and socialist campaigns to liberate film director Sergei Parajanov, whose stellar career encompassed his three Soviet homelands: Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine. The articles explore the ways in which Soviet queer people understood and imagined same-sex desire and gender fluidity. Эта фраза выражает стремление к золотой середине: не быть полностью «закрытым», «в шкафу» (угнетенным и вытесненным из повседневности) и одновременно не привлекать лишнего внимания (не расшатывать гетеронормативную матрицу). Здесь можно найти и стремление к безопасности, поскольку публичность негетеросексуального человека в России может быть чревата травлей, насилием, увольнением и другими проблемами. Authors:Bella Ostromooukhova Abstract: L’article analyse l’évolution des frontières du permis dans les représentations de « sexualités dissidentes » dans la littérature jeunesse russe de la fin de la perestroïka à aujourd’hui, à travers trois périodes historiques. Dans un premier temps, à partir de l’exemple de deux publications de la fin des années 1980 et du début des années 1990, l’auteure montre que l’enjeu de cette époque était d’avancer l’âge d’accès au savoir sur la sexualité, mais nullement de bouleverser sa perception hétéronormée. La deuxième partie traite la période allant de la première moitié des années 2000 à 2013 et porte sur les controverses autour de remises en cause, à des degrés différents, de la représentation hétéronormée de la sexualité. Authors:Stefano Pisu Abstract: This article seeks to reconstruct the 1974-1977 transnational solidarity campaign in support of the Soviet filmmaker Sergei Parajanov, who was arrested in Kiev in late 1973 on charges of homosexual relations and sentenced to five years in prison. The mobilization for Parajanov’s release raises various research questions that one can summarize as follows: Why and how was that campaign able to mobilize Western players coming from different milieux and countries' The author argues that the “Parajanov affair” may allow us to understand the extent to which the topic of homosexuality in the USSR in the 1970s represented a strand of a broader transnational framework in which sexual identity, human rights, artistic expression and even Italian political issues intersected. Authors:Ineta Lipša Abstract: Through narrative analysis of the diary of Latvian queer Kaspars Aleksandrs Irbe (1906–1996), written regularly from 1940 to 1996, the paper focuses on the examination of three themes by which Irbe documented his queer self. First, through the use of the unofficial sexual knowledge he had gained since the 1950s by reading works by early twentieth-century sexologists in German published before the Second World War. Second, through self-identification and identification of others on the basis of this unofficial sexual knowledge and Classical mythology.
