  • An Immaterial Problem: Toward an Archaeology of Textiles and Textile
           Production in Historic South Asia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Historically, India was known as the land of cloth. It was famous for its cottons and silks, which were highly prized trade commodities (Forbes 1956; Gopal 1961; Schlingloff 1974). We read in the Periplus Maris Erythraei that silk, cotton, and fine cotton cloths were exported to the west in the first century a.d. (Casson 2012:16). Later, Chinese sources speak of tributes from Indian kings in the form of cotton (Goodrich 1943:408). Partly due to their value, we also imagine that textiles were important craft products within South Asian culture and society. As commodities and practical necessities, they were likely central to craft economies throughout South Asia for about as long as we can chart them. Their ... Read More

Abstract: We are pleased to share with our readers this latest issue of Asian Perspectives and introduce ourselves as the journal's new Editorial Team. Owing to their steady hand in guiding the journal, we are inheriting a respected publication which now attracts increasing numbers of submissions from scholars working in different regions of Asia and the Pacific. We thank Mike and Rowan for their commitment to the journal and look forward to working with them as members of the Editorial Board.Partly in response to increasing numbers of ... Read More

  • Low-Density Urbanism in Medieval Sri Lanka: Exploring the Hinterland of
           Polonnaruva

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Polonnaruva, the capital of Sri Lanka from a.d. 1017 to 1215, remained the political center of the island for over two hundred years (Fig. 1). New research focusing on the city and its hinterland has demonstrated the development of a formalized settlement pattern integrating multiple communities and religious traditions. Settlements within the hinterland of the city were large and evenly distributed across the landscape, indicating a degree of preplanning. This represents a significant divergence from the patterns identified around Anuradhapura, which had been capital for most of the period from ca. 437 b.c. to a.d. 1017, and denotes a distinct shift from the Early Historic period into the Early Medieval world.Map ... • Grave Goods from Megalithic Burials in the Upland Forests of the Nilgiri
Mountains, South India: Analysis and Chronology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the latter half of the second millennium b.c., networks of trade and exchange developed throughout South Asia (e.g., Chakrabarti 2005). Urban polities thrived on the extraction of upland forest products, feeding networks across the region, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal (Morrison 2002a; Morrison and Lycett 2013). Forest products ranged from plant materials such as timber, medicinal plants, spices, dyes, resins, and fibrous plants to animal by-products such as skins, feathers, furs, bones, ivory, and honey and included raw materials such as metals and gemstones (Olivelle 2013:141).1 The capacity to exploit hinterland resources rested on a longue durée engagement with forest-dwellers whose ecological ... • The Multi-Period Settlement Dali in Southeastern Kazakhstan: Bronze Age
Institutional Dynamics along the Inner Asian Mountain Corridor

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Across the steppes and mountains of Central Eurasia, the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3000–2200 b.c.) marked a pivotal phase in the development of interregional interactions and mobility among diverse communities. Recent human genomic studies illustrate that emergent pastoralist communities associated with the so-called Afanasievo material assemblage (ca. 3200–2700 b.c.) in the Altai-Sayan mountains of southwest Siberia were genetically indistinguishable from western steppe Yamnaya communities documented in the northern Caucasus and Pontic-Caspian steppe, indicating a punctuated eastward spread of western steppe ancestry around the start of the third millennium b.c. (Allentoft et al. 2015; Damgaard et al. 2018a, 2018b; ... Read More

  • Copper Mining and Metallurgy in the Zhongtiao Mountains and Yangzi River
           Valleys in Early China

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Acquisition of key natural resources was important for state formation and development in early China. The constant flow of these resources guaranteed the stability of kingdoms in the Central Plains, so archaeologists have proposed that the uneven distribution of these resources would have motivated early state rulers to procure them by territorially expanding into peripheral regions (Chang 1983; Liu and Chen 2003). Many researchers have studied the resource acquisition and transportation networks of early China; however, our understanding of the modes of resource procurement in resource-rich regions remains vague. By focusing on data from mining regions, this article analyzes the organization of copper mining and ... Read More

  • Hierarchical, Ethnic, and Provenance Features of Western Zhou Period
Proto-Porcelain in Northern China: New Evidence of a Redistribution System
           During the Western Zhou Dynasty

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Proto-porcelain is a unique ceramic that has drawn scholarly attention. Considered valuable, proto-porcelain objects were particularly popular during China's Bronze Age (ca. 2070–220 b.c.e.). Although a generally accepted definition of Chinese proto-porcelain has yet to be proposed, most scholars agree that proto-porcelain is most similar to stoneware from a technical standpoint. The main difference is that proto-porcelain is glazed, while stoneware is not (Liu 2003; Rice 2015). "Stoneware" is a Western term, however; Chinese scholars usually consider proto-porcelain to be the predecessor to porcelain and usually place it in the porcelain category. Compared to porcelain, the body of proto-porcelain is only ... Read More

  • Animals and Human Society in Asia: Historical, Cultural and Ethical
Perspectives ed. by Rotem Kowner et al. (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Animals have always played central roles in human societies, but most aspects of their histories remain poorly explored. There is a substantial body of English-language scholarship on the history of animals in Western Europe, but the same cannot be said for the rest of Eurasia, so this book is a valuable addition to the literature. Because "animals" is a broad category, "Asia" is a big place, and the book includes work by scholars of archaeology, history, and religion, the book's contents are quite varied. In terms of geography, it is mostly focused on East Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Mongol Empire, the only political entity that ever stretched between the two regions. The work extends even further in ... Read More

  • The Art and Archaeology of Bodily Adornment: Studies from Central and East
Asian Mortuary Contexts ed. by Sheri A. Lullo and Leslie V.Wallace
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The Art and Archaeology of Bodily Adornment centers around the role of bodily adornment in visualizing and constructing individual identities in mortuary contexts in Central and East Asia. This edited volume intends to show how, as a visual language for communication, ornamentation using jewelry, dress, and hairstyle constructs the social body and conveys personal information such as status and affiliation. This book primarily consists of papers that were presented at the 2016 conference of the Society for East Asian Archaeology hosted by Harvard and Boston Universities. The authors of the nine essays are archaeologists or art historians that have examined artifacts worn by or placed near deceased bodies or the ... Read More

  • Socio-Environmental Dynamics along the Historical Silk Road ed. by Liang
           Emlyn Yang et al. (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The question of climatic influence on ancient human societies has been a focus of research in archaeology, history, and the environmental sciences for some time. A variety of methodological approaches and theoretical frameworks have been applied to the question as well, spanning environmental determinism, collapse narratives, complex adaptive systems theory, and political economy. In the volume Socio-Environmental Dynamics along the Historical Silk Road, editors Liang Emlyn Yang, Hans-Rudolf Bork, Xiuqi Fang, and Steffen Mischke bring together 22 wide-ranging chapters spanning these approaches, with a singular geographic focus to unite them. The times and places encompassed by the "Silk Road" are rich and diverse ... • Sources of Han Decor: Foreign Influence of the Han Dynasty Chinese
Iconography of Paradise (260 BC–AD 220) by Sophia-Karin Psarras (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In her previous book, Han Material Culture: An Archaeological Analysis and Vessel Typology, Sophia-Karin Psarras (2015) focused on the relative dating of Han Dynasty tombs and their accompanying ceramic vessels in order to question historical and regional interaction within Han Dynasty China (206 b.c.–a.d. 220) and the degree to which the Han looked outward when shaping their material worlds. In Han Material Culture, Psarras set aside dimensions of meaning in Han visual culture in favor of systematic, recorded chronology and dismantled any notions that tomb decor might be useful in the dating of archaeological contexts. In her most recent book, Sources of Han Decor, Psarras revisits imagery as a subject, but uses ... Read More

Khok Charoen, Thailand: An Illustrated, Structured Catalogue of
Prehistoric Ceramic Finds from the Site by Helmut Loofs-Wissowa (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This is the belated final report of excavations carried out almost fifty years ago at the site of Khok Charoen ("Hill of Prosperity") in the northeastern corner of Central Thailand. These excavations were done in a pioneering spirit, with considerable enthusiasm, by a small team with a modest budget, little field experience in Southeast Asian conditions and using methods and techniques adequate at the time but now perhaps seen as somewhat antiquated. These two BAR International Series volumes (2844 and 2918) constitute the final report for one of a handful of seminal collaborative international excavations undertaken in Thailand in the 1960s. The site of Khok Charoen in Lopburi Province was one focus of what started ... Read More

  • Ban Chiang, Northeast Thailand, vol. 2C: The Metal Remains in Regional
Context ed. by Joyce C. White and Elizabeth G. Hamilton (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The third volume of the Thai Archaeology Monograph (TAM) Series on the metal remains at Ban Chiang provides important interpretations of the metal evidence within a regional social context. This edited volume presents substantive contributions from multiple scholars on copper mining and smelting from Thailand and Laos, provenance research on artifacts from the sites of Ban Chiang and Dan Klang, and a thorough regional synthesis of metal technology systems in Northeast and Central Thailand. This corpus of work presented by the authors supports the theory that there was a maintenance of regional economic networks with communit-based, nonhierarchical, social organization of production in these metal age societies. The ...
