  • Knowledge of the Unknown

    • Authors: Sophie Ledebur
Abstract: Undetected and unreported crime are among the most pressing challenges of crime statistics. Since the late 1960s and early 1970s, victim surveys and self-report surveys have helped to paint a clearer picture of the social reality of crime, and in modern criminology such tools are now state of the art. Yet despite the current boom in survey-based methods, the history of this quest to define the “reality of crime” remains largely obscure. Its roots extend much further back to an age well before the “dark figure” of crime became, at least in part, a measurable entity. This paper explores the historical context behind an emerging awareness of undiscovered crime at the turn to the 19th century. The knowledge that knowledge was deficient emerged out of practices of criminal investigation. It is considered here in the light of a perception in German territories on the threshold to a modern administration that itinerant thieves and vagabonds posed a very real danger. The paper examines meth...

  • Susan A. Ashley, “Misfits” in Fin-de-Siècle France and Italy:
           Anatomies of Difference

    • Authors: Katherine Watson
Abstract: What counts as normal' That’s the question the author sets out to answer, focusing on France and Italy in the fin-de-siècle period (roughly 1870-1914), where six groups of people seemed to embody the mental and physical toll of modern life. Essentially a history of ideas about difference, the book explores the efforts of specialists and observers to identify, classify, explain and respond to aberrant and transgressive behaviours exhibited by mental misfits (geniuses, lunatics, neurotics) and social misfits (vagabonds, criminals, sexual deviants). Densely written yet richly detailed chapters examine each group in turn, bookended by introductory and concluding chapters evocatively titled: “In Spite of Evolution, Because of Modern Life” (ch 1) and “Singular Analogies” (ch 8). Useful sub-headings help to identify commonalities such as the perceived scope of “the problem” and its “implications”, and the statistics provided show just why most of these groups were believed to pose a threat...

  • Barry Anthony, Murder, Mayhem and Music Hall: The Dark Side of Victorian
           London

    • Authors: Rosalind Crone
Abstract: “Rather than walk along the Strand,” Barry Anthony tells us, at the end of the 19th century “the comedian Dan Leno found it cheaper to take a cab from one end to the other”, as on foot his progress was impeded by the desperate and the criminal, beggars and swindlers, on the look out for mugs who would give them some cash (p. 129). Today, you are far more likely to suffer from the intolerable traffic fumes belched out by the many cars and buses which make use of one of London’s most important thoroughfares. And although it remains at the border of London’s famous theatreland, there are few clues as to the Strand’s disreputable and dangerous past. You would have to look hard for the blue plaque which marks the spot of the murder of William Terriss, famous actor at the Adelphi Theatre in the 1880s and 1890s. There is quite a distance — physical and conceptual — between The Coal Hole at 91 Strand (which opened in the early 20th century) and its predecessor at Fountain Court, where the s...

  • Charles Illouz, Pierre Prétou (dir.), Heur et malheur du joueur :
études sur la violence et le Jeu

    • Authors: James Sharpe
Abstract: Charles Illouz opens his “Prologue” to this collection of essays by claiming that despite two “ouvertures remarquables” on the subject, the issue of play has not received the attention it deserves from the human sciences. The “ouvertures remarquables” are, of course, Johan Huizinga’s Homo Ludens, first published in Dutch in 1938, and Roger Caillois: Les Jeux et Les Hommes, published in 1958 and translated into English in 1961 as Man, Play and Games, a reminder, which occasionally has implications for the work under review, that “jeu” can be translated into English by one of two words which have somewhat different, if overlapping, meanings. Although the contributors to this volume are aware of the importance of these two pioneering works, they each set out, in ways that are never less than stimulating, to develop the concept of “play theory” more fully. The variety of approaches offered here is very wide, encompassing varied disciplinary viewpoints, historical periods, and types of “p...

  • David Hitchcock, Vagrancy in English Culture and Society, 1650-1750

    • Authors: James Sharpe
Abstract: Before the advent of the “New Social History” in the 1960s, conventional wisdom among historians about vagrancy in early modern England was founded on a number of contemporary print commentaries which depicted vagrants as a threat to the well-ordered commonwealth, portraying them as an organised and hierarchical “fraternity of vagabonds” whose values subverted the social norms and values of respectable society. Early work on relevant archival sources (Paul Slack and A.L. Beier were two noteworthy contributors to this process) discovered little by way of organised and hierarchical bands of criminal vagrants, but rather a varied body of the mobile poor, in which migrant workers and casualties of those numerous misfortunes which could afflict the lower orders of society in the Elizabethan and early Stuart periods (and, indeed, most others) vastly outnumbered hardcore criminal vagrants. These archival researches, however, while admittedly pushing on to the1650s, followed the long-famili...

  • Colin Rose, A Renaissance of Violence: Homicide in Early Modern Italy

    • Authors: Sanne Muurling
Abstract: Early modern northern Italy presents an interesting conundrum in the debates about the causes of the long-term historical decline of lethal violence. Explanations for the centuries-long decline in homicide usually broadly rely on Elias’ theory of the civilizing process, suggesting that self-control rose as individuals internalised social controls promoted by the expansion of the state and the extension of the market economy. But northern Italy until the eighteenth century had not only developed a sophisticated bureaucracy, centralised legal and political institutions, and a robust market economy, but was also characterised by high homicide rates and a late decline compared to other parts of Western Europe. Some scholars attribute early modern Italy’s high levels of violence to its assumed (and often ill-defined) persisting honour culture, while others have tried to unpack this murky concept by focussing on the relationship between the gentlemanly laws of honour and a prevalence of l...

  • Karl Härter, Strafrechts- und Kriminalitätsgeschichte der
           Frühen Neuzeit

    • Authors: Falk Bretschneider

           Dominique Kalifa (1957-2020)

    • Authors: Paul Lawrence
Abstract: Crime, History & Societies wishes to pay tribute to the lives and work of three important historians of crime and criminal justice, all of whom were closely associated with the work of the journal as members of its Editorial Board or Advisory Board. All three colleagues helped to shape the field of criminal justice history through their publications, teaching and academic leadership, and all three contributed significantly to the work of the journal since its founding in 1997.
