  • Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak. A Fire of Lilies: Perspectives on Literature and
           Politics in Modern Iran

    • Authors: Behnam Fomeshi
Abstract: As Seyed-Gohrab rightly mentions in the introduction to this volume, “poets and writers are so essential in the turbulent history of twentieth-century Iran that any history of modern Iran neglecting the role of literature ... would be seriously incomplete” (14). This volume, focusing on the second half of the twentieth century, provides a history of the period through analysing the relation between writers and the state. It consists of a prologue, an introduction (by Seyed-Gohrab), eight chapters, notes, a bibliography, and an index. The first four chapters discuss the issue of censorship in the period under study. Chapter One studies how “the mechanisms that bind artistic expression to a particular version of the symbolic grasp of reality, conceived and conducted within one social environment, may not operate in the same way in another” (47). The next three chapters are organized in a chronological order. Chapter Two provides the reader with an history of the Writers Association of ...

  • Anne Démy-Geroe. Iranian National Cinema: The Interaction of Policy,
           Genre, Funding, and Reception

    • Authors: Max Bledstein
Abstract: This book offers a thoughtful and useful exploration of the production and distribution of Iranian cinema both within and beyond the country. Démy-Geroe draws on her own experience as artistic director of the Brisbane International Film Festival, which led her to annual trips to Tehran’s Fajr International Film Festival. These visits gave her the opportunity to meet with a number of Iran’s most established filmmakers and industry insiders (including both government officials and employees such as sales agents), interviews with whom she references throughout the book. The discussion of these sources and various others focuses on the years 2000-2013, which allows for a comparison between the second half of the presidency of Mohammad Khatami (1997-2005) and that of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (2005-2013). Démy-Geroe organizes the six chapters that examine this time period into three primary clusters: one on genres and categories recognised by the government, one on international reception of I...

  • Manata Hashemi. Coming of Age in Iran: Poverty and the Struggle for
           Dignity

    • Authors: Stella Morgana
Abstract: If one had to choose one book to study the youth in Iran and get insightful glimpses of ordinary life, Manata Hashemi's work offers an invaluable resource to start with. Coming of Age in Iran: Poverty and the Struggle for Dignity zooms out at the lives of young Iranians aged 15–29, whose households' income barely stands at the minimum wage. Building on extensive fieldwork conducted in Iran over the period between 2008 and 2019, this book sheds light on the lives of the young poor. It navigates the youth coping strategies with hardship, as well as social acceptance. In each of its five chapters, Hashemi's study brings the reader on a journey into the lives of those who strive to define their dignity between social constructions, validation and stigma. The forty-four interviews collected in the book show the poor districts of south Tehran and Sari, the capital city of the northern Mazandaran province, through the lens of the so-called "face-savers." These are the young people who manag...

  • Niloofar Haeri. Say What Your Longing Heart Desires: Women, Prayer and
           Poetry in Iran

    • Authors: Behnam Fomeshi
Abstract: Through offering an ethnography of a group of educated, middle-class women who “had been attending weekly Qur’an and classical poetry classes for years” (xii), the volume shows that poetry and prayer are companions in the cultural history of Iran. It attempts to answer the question, “What does this companionship mean for forms of religiosity in Iran'” (xiv). It consists of an introduction, four chapters, a conclusion, a glossary, notes, a bibliography, and an index. Challenging the “presumption of backwardness and absence of intellectual struggles” in the characterization of the 1979 Iranian Revolution by Western media and “some in academia”, the volume tries to discover certain “unexpected but crucial processes that have been set in motion” (1). The Revolution may have failed to realize its democratic aspirations in the realm of politics. Nevertheless, its “transformative effect on matters of religion” should not be underestimated (1). Non-clerics’ engagement in theological discussi...

  • Reza Taher-Kermani. The Persian Presence in Victorian Poetry

    • Authors: Behnam Fomeshi
Abstract: Building on the author’s PhD thesis on “the British cultural and imaginative engagements with Persia in the nineteenth century” (vi), the volume charts “the diversity of perceptions associated with Persia in Victorian literary culture” (2). It focuses on poetry as the medium through which to survey the Victorian conception of Persia. It consists of an introduction, five chapters, an epilogue, a bibliography, and an index. Following a chronological pattern, Chapter One moves forward from the Greek and biblical representations of Persia to the modern period. Through examining Jones’s ‘A Persian Song of Hafiz’ and Morier’s ‘The Adventures of Hajjî Baba of Ispahan’, it shows the “contradictions that continued to animate the image of Persia in British writing” (14). Providing “the first systematic analysis of the presence of Persia in nineteenth-century English poetry”, (8) Chapter Two introduces the “imaginary Persia of myth and fable, which dominates the mass of nineteenth-century poems...

  • Antonio Panaino. A Walk through the Iranian Heavens. Spherical and
Non-Spherical Cosmographic Models in the Imagination of Ancient Iran and
           Its Neighbors

    • Authors: Alessia Zubani

  • Keelan Overton, Kimia Maleki. “The Emamzadeh Yahya at Varamin: A Present
History of a Living Shrine, 2018-20”

  • Simon Gundelfinger, Peter Verkinderen. “The Governors of al-Shām and
Fārs in the Early Islamic Empire – A Comparative Regional
           Perspective”

    • Authors: Dariouche Kechavarzi
