  • Metaphorical Perceptions of University Students on the Concept of Swimming

    • Authors: Gökhan ARIKAN; Ali CULHA
Abstract: Metaphors, which are effective in understanding and concretizing concepts, are expressed as one of the most effective mental tools that structure, direct, control and communicate our thoughts about the formation and process of concepts. In other words; What is intended to be emphasized with the concept of metaphor is the explanation of a concept, phenomenon or event by analogy with another concept, phenomenon or event. The meaning that people attribute to the concept of swimming may also differ according to the lifestyle. Based on these considerations, this research aimed to reveal the meaning that people attribute to the concept of swimming. Qualitative research methods were preferred to reveal this meaning through metaphors. The aim of this phenomenological research is to explore the metaphorical perceptions of university students about swimming. The data of the research were collected through a structured form prepared in electronic environment. In the first part of the form, there were questions about the personal information of the participants. In the second part, “Swimming is like ……, which is frequently used in metaphor studies. Because……” structure is used. The data of the study were collected randomly from Harran University students. A total of 268 students, 156 women and 112 men, participated in the study. In the analysis of the data, as a result of listing the codes and topics about how the participants experienced the phenomenon, 6 themes were obtained to form a semantic whole. These themes were “Man’s desire to be free”, “Health and relaxation”, “Physical activity”, “Life struggle” They were gathered under the titles of “identification with nature” and “entertainment”. The 6 topics obtained show positive perceptions in general. According to the findings of this study, it can be said that the students have positive perceptions about the “swimming” metaphor.

  • Association of SOD2 Polymorphism (Rs4880) and Competitive Performance in
           Track and Field Athletes

    • Authors: Hasan Huseyin KAZAN; Celal BULĞAY, Erdal ZORBA, Işık BAYRAKTAR, Mesut CERİT, Mehmet Ali ERGUN
Abstract: The rs4880 polymorphism in the SOD2 gene has frequently been associated with the athletic performance of the athletes in different populations. However, there were not any studies in the Turkish elite athletes. Thus, the aim of the study is to evaluate the impacts of SOD2 rs4880 polymorphism on competitive performance of Turkish elite athletes. A total of 60 elite athletes (31 sprint/power and 29 endurance) and 20 controls with the ages of 18-35 voluntarily participated in the study. World Athletics (WA) score table was used to determine the performance levels of the competitive performance/personal best (PB) of the athletes. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed by the genomic DNA isolated from peripheral blood of the participants. Sport type, sex and competitive performance were chosen as the parameters to compare within and between the groups by linear regression models. There were not any significances between the genotype and allele frequencies. Finally, there were not any associations between competitive performance and genotype frequencies within the sprint/power athletes while competitive performance was significantly (p=0.049) correlated with rs4880 polymorphism according to the over-dominant model within the endurance athletes. The rs4880 polymorphism in the SOD2 gene may be linked to the competitive performance of the endurance athletes. Still, further studies with more participants and analyzing multiple factors are needed.

  • Predictions on Body Sociology: A Revıew on Herbert George
           Wells’ Opinions

    • Authors: Uğur KESKİN; Muhammet N. ÇAKMAK
Abstract: In this article, the narrative elements of George Herbert Wells (1866-1946), known for his works in the field of science fiction and one of the founders of this field, were evaluated in the context of body sociology. In addition to the data obtained in field studies, Wells’s narratives and similar primary sources can also be examined from a theoretical point of view. Based on this understanding, in this article, the main characters in Wells’s A Story of Days to Come and the aspects that can be discussed in the theoretical context of today’s body sociology are tried to be revealed. Analyzes were carried out to determine which narrative elements of Wells’s narrative characters can be considered as the pioneers of theories and concepts in today’s body sociology literature. In the article, which was carried out as a qualitative research, interpretive phenomenology was used as a research design. As a result of all these studies, the narrative elements of Wells’s narrative characters were put side by side with the unique explanations of the field of body sociology, and it was tried to make the quality of “juxtaposition and relationship building” in scientific studies operative. Through the narrative, description and transfers made from the field of body sociology, the aspects of Wells’s narrative characters that make meaningful contributions in terms of the concepts of “highlighting the body” and “fashion” have been tried to be presented to the attention of the reader by providing literature support.
