  • The Outdoor Game “Catch-Up” is A Tool to Support the Development of
           Coordination Abilities in Children

    • Authors: Georgiy Polevoy
Abstract: Background. The actual problem of physical inactivity among schoolchildren can be solved by supplementing the school program on physical culture with outdoor games.
Objectives. To assess the impact of the outdoor game named “Catch-up” on some variables (throwing, running and agility) featuring coordination abilities of schoolchildren 7-8 years old.
Methods. Assessment was performed at the Kirov primary school in Russia. 120 boys and girls participated in the study over 4 months. As they went to the same school, it was assumed them to have similar previous coordination development and performed similar extra-school physical activities. First-graders from the control group were engaged in a standard program of physical education at school and children from the experimental group were additionally engaged in a physical activity game Catch-up. To match the effort between the two groups, the control group prolonged the standard program (warm-up phase) by a time corresponding to how long it took the control to play Catch-up. The level of development of coordination abilities of schoolchildren was assessed using two tests: throwing a ball to a target and 3×10-meter shuttle running.
Results. The variables in the control group in the throwing test improved from 3.35±0.92 to 3.60±0.69 hits (7.5%, p>0.05) and in the shuttle running from 10.20±0.40 to 9.85±0.39 seconds (3.4%, p

  • Psychometrics’ Properties of Sports Commitment Questionnaire-2 among
           Racquet Sports Athletes in Malaysia

    • Authors: Eng Wah Teo
Abstract: Background. Sports psychologists believe sports commitment is important to indicate the desire to continue or cease participation in sports from a psychosocial perspective. The Sports Commitment Questionnaire-2 (SCQ-2) has been developed and validated to investigate athletes’ commitment in sports settings in Western countries but not in Malaysia. Hence, it is essential to establish instrument validity before being widely used in Malaysia, especially among athletes.
Objectives. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Sports Commitment Questionnaire-2 (SCQ-2) among Malaysian racquet sports athletes.
Methods. This is a cross-sectional study, a total of 416 players (245 males/ 171 females, µ age=29.94±11.47) completed the SCQ-2 (Scanlan et al., 2016) consisting of 58 items measuring ten factors and two dimensions of sports commitment. We examined the psychometric properties of SCQ-2, by conducting Confirmatory Factor Analysis and examined discriminant validity and composite reliability (CR).
Results. Initial fit indices of the hypothesized measurement model did not achieve satisfactory fit. But, after further model modification i.e., deleting 3 items resulted in good data fit (CFI=0.90, RMSEA=0.05, TLI=0.90, X²/df=2.14). Discriminant validity also met the suggested cutoff value (< 0.90). whereas  CR values were acceptable for the subscales ranging from 0.77 to 0.89. Convergent validity (AVE, ranging from 0.50 to 0.58) and discriminant validity (

  • Impact of Exercise on High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Adults with
Overweight and Obesity: A Narrative Review

    • Authors: Wan Syaheedah Wan Ghazali
Abstract: Background. Sedentary lifestyles and insufficient physical activity contribute significantly to the rising global epidemic of obesity, fostering an environment where excess calories are stored as adipose tissue. Lack of regular physical activity and diminished cardiorespiratory fitness are key factors in the emergence of obesity-related illnesses, leading to cardiovascular and metabolic complications. However, the extent to which low levels of physical activity and obesity directly cause low HDL-C levels is uncertain, and the specific impact of obesity on reducing HDL-C as well as the associated risks are not well clarified. The influence of different types of exercise on HDL function is intricate and depends on various factors, including exercise intensity and individual characteristics.
Objectives. This study aims to investigate the effect of exercise on HDL-C levels in overweight and obese adults, as well as review the mechanisms and pathways by which various exercise types influence HDL-C metabolism in this population.
Methods. A literature search was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Studies were included if they were published in English.
Results. A sequential moderate-to-high-intensity exercise regimen resulted in sustained or gradual improvements in HDL-C levels. For increased HDL-C levels, frequent moderate-to-high-intensity, long-duration exercise at an aerobic threshold in conjunction with body mass reduction and dietary modification is observed from the reviewed studies.
Conclusion. Regular exercise can improve HDL-C levels in overweight and obese individuals. A combination of moderate-to-high-intensity, long-duration exercise at an aerobic threshold with body mass reduction and dietary modification is most effective. Overweight and obese individuals should engage in regular exercise to improve their HDL-C levels and overall health.

  • The Effect of Controlling the Relaxation of Bony Landmarks Surrounding the
Anterior Shoulder in Collegiate Wrestlers on Improving Shoulder Movement

    • Authors: Je-Hun Lee
Abstract: Background. Shoulder movement is an important factor for wrestlers. Because the shoulder has a complex structure, shortening of the muscles that move the shoulder joint is associated with injuries. Therefore, for wrestlers, shoulder movement is a factor that affects performance, so it is important to check mobility and keep it flexible.
Objectives. The purpose of this study is to improve the angles of internal and external rotation of the shoulder joint by applying pressure to the bony landmarks where the related muscles are attached in order to make the wrestler's shoulder joint movement flexible.
Methods. Forty-three male collegiate wrestling athletes were conditioned at bony landmarks where muscles involved in shoulder movement attach for 10 to 15 minutes before and after each match for three weeks.
Results. As a result of comparing the range of motion before and after applying conditioning, it was found that there was a significant effect on improving mobility. Based on this, it is believed that a conditioning method that applies pressure to the landmark area of the bone may be effective.
Conclusion. In this study, it was found that applying muscle compression and relaxation therapy based on bone landmarks had a significant effect on improving the internal rotation angle of the shoulder joint. The closer a muscle is to the tendon, the less blood it receives, and the tendon area is attached to the bone and endures muscle contraction and relaxation, so fatigue is thought to be high. Therefore, compression and rolling based on this area can help relieve accumulated fatigue, assuming there is no inflammation.
