  • The Fantasy Sport Context: Altering the Uses and Gratifications of Sports
           Fandom

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: When describing 21st-century sports media, at least one major component of innovation involves the blending of fantasy with reality. Virtual reality (VR) headsets allow fans to enter new fantasy worlds, sitting courtside at a professional basketball game or physically "fighting" opponents from the film Creed 2. Additionally, eSports competitions are located in major sporting arenas, owned by traditional sports athletes, and rendered on mainstream sports-oriented networks (Snider, 2013). However, perhaps the blending of fantasy with reality in the world of sports is most ubiquitous regarding participation in fantasy sport. Once dubbed "rotisserie" (Bernhard & Eade, 2005) or varied levels of "prognostication" (St. ... Read More

Abstract: Damaged goods (noun): products that are broken, cracked, scratched, etc.; a person who is considered to be no longer desirable or valuable because of something that has happened.Damaged goods (noun): when a player involved in a trade is hurt.In the last generation, sports fandom has moved far beyond the passive experience of watching the local team at a set day and time. Today, it is an interactive experience that lasts well after the games, allowing fans to immerse themselves whenever they want across countless platforms. One of the most significant changes has been the growth of fantasy sports, which has allowed fans to act as team owners—trading, buying, and selling players in leagues run by the fans. Today ... • The Emergence of the Asian American Sporting Body: Michael Chang and Model
Minority Discourse in the Post-Reagan Era

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Asian American athletes' history in the national and international sports field is unique and rich. Their history is long and varied, encompassing a number of sports, and their sporting accomplishments and influence on American sports are significant enough to be discussed in various academic fields. However, their stories have been largely excluded from American sports discourse, and Asian American athletes in the 1990s were mistakenly described as the first Asian American athletes playing in American sports (Joo, 2012). The lack of recognition of Asian American athletes before the 1990s did not result from a scarcity of Asian American athletes or from their unimpressive performances in American and international ... • "It's Impossible": Local Sports Broadcasters and the Prospect of
           Motherhood

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Giving birth did not slow down the career of ESPN sportscaster Samantha Ponder. A 2014 profile of Ponder and her daughter, Scout, told of them flying on dozens of flights together to college towns before Scout had turned 6 months old, how the ESPN production team would babysit when necessary, and how Ponder would bring Scout to games to the adoration of some coaches (Deitsch, 2014). However, it is not easy for Ponder and other women who become moms while working in the broadcast profession. Some national sportscasters have associated pregnancy in their line of work with words and phrases such as "obstacle," "risk," "fear," "sacrifice," "vulnerable," and "uphill battle" (Jessop, 2020). Their responses are reflective ... Read More

  • Naked Function, Athletic Form: Acceptable Sexuality and the Myth of
           Empowerment in ESPN's Body Issue

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: For 11 years, ESPN published the Body Issue "in celebration of the athletic form," depicting athletes in nude and partially nude photographs (Christie, 2019). The Body Issue has featured hundreds of athletes from dozens of sports and has been both celebrated for its appreciation of the human form and criticized for its objectification of athletes. It was a huge financial success for ESPN and was able to help temporarily revitalize a struggling ESPN The Magazine, before it eventually stopped print publication in 2019. Initially created to compete with Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue, the Body Issue capitalizes on the sexual curiosity of viewers while using a rhetorical framework of pseudoscientific art ... • NFL Player Protests, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Diversion in
           Sport Crisis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On August 14, 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the pregame national anthem before a preseason National Football League (NFL) game against the Houston Texans. The gesture was not noticed until three games later when a reporter asked him the significance behind his decision to kneel (Reid, 2017). Kaepernick responded by saying he was taking a knee during the national anthem to bring attention to the recent incidents of police violence against Black men in the United States. Soon, fellow players, like teammate Eric Reid, began taking a knee during the anthem in solidarity with Kaepernick to bring awareness to the issue of racial inequality and police violence. "We discussed how ... Read More

  • Nation Branding Through Olympics: Evidence from the 2018 PyeongChang
           Winter Olympics

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Nation branding is a popular concept across disciplines such as tourism, public policy, and marketing. Studies have demonstrated that nation branding attracts foreign tourists (Stokburger-Sauer, 2011), grows product exports (C. Chen & Lee, 2013), and increases foreign investments (Papadopoulos et al., 2016). Indeed, governments around the world use different strategies to present brands to their global audiences (Dinnie et al., 2010). Among various strategies used for nation branding, sports megaevents have been regarded as a powerful tool for developing a brand.People around the world have limited exposure to other nations in their daily life. However, during a sports megaevent, eyes are cast on the national teams ... Read More
