  • Talented athletes as high achievers—only in sports' Analysis of academic
performance and the impact of dual career assistance programmes in upper
           secondary school

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The simultaneous pursuit of success in elite sport and the highest school qualification is considered to be one of the challenges for adolescents who are sporting talents. Dual career assistance programmes (DCAPs) for student-athletes are designed to help master this challenge in the best possible way. This study focusses on the upper secondary school performance of 200 student-athletes from an elite sports school. First, the school performance of student-athletes enrolled in two different DCAPs was compared. In addition to the educational services in DCAP‑1, DCAP‑2 includes a 1-year extension of the school period and the option of spreading the final exam phase out over several school years. Second, the school performance of student-athletes was compared with the performance of the entire student population. The analyses yielded the following findings: 1) student-athletes’ school performance is well above the average of the entire student population. 2) Although, DCAP‑2 users are much more involved in elite sport, their school performance and performance development do not differ from DCAP‑1 users. These results do not provide any indication of a systematic neglect of student-athletes’ academic career in favour of their athletic career. DCAPs appear to ensure the success of student-athletes’ academic careers effectively.

  • “Reflective practice” in physical education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Physical education (PE) is rooted in a historically evolved subject culture that goes largely unquestioned in everyday teaching and learning. It is characterized by a normative primacy of movement practices, placing it in a precarious relationship with the intellectual practices required by sports pedagogy and school curricula. The present case study is based on praxeological classroom research and examines how didactic interferences between intellectual reserves and movement reserves are represented in the principle of “reflective practice” in PE. To reconstruct key orientations toward the interfering practices of teaching and learning that guide teachers’ actions, we conducted six expert interviews in a PE development project in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and analyzed the interview data based on the coding procedure of grounded theory. The reconstructed orientations guiding PE teachers’ actions can be described according to three key dimensions: On the temporal level, one key interference is the scarcity of time for movement. On the spatial level, the space of the gymnasium often stands in the way of establishing and routinizing intellectual practices. On the media level, the use of written forms in PE classes appears to be regarded as a requirement that is imposed upon teachers and that should be kept to a minimum. The results are particularly relevant to research on the institutional professionalization of PE teachers.

  • The role of the body in electronic sport: a scoping review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The popularity of competitive computer and videogaming, also known as electronic sport (esport), has been rising rapidly during the past decades. Because of many parallels with traditional sports, like competitiveness, skill requirements, degree of professionalization, or the way it is portrayed in the media, esport has been adopted as part of the sport canon in many countries. Still, critics argue that playing computer games lacks the physicality commonly seen in traditional sports. A significant part of the competition is mediated through digital platforms and the spotlight shifts from the players’ appearance and actions to their digital avatars. This paper takes on this issue by exploring existing evidence about the role of the body in esport via a scoping review approach. According to the findings of 47 studies, the body’s role in esport is akin to that in traditional sport, including specific motoric requirements or biometric responses. Beyond that, the body can be seen as a link between the digital and physical worlds. Players embody digital avatars in the form of esport-specific movements, transfer of norms and ideals, and identification with the in-game characters. Future research can use this review as a basis for scientific approaches to individual phenomena regarding corporeality in esport and inter-corporeality.

  • Position and location as influencing factors for the brand awareness of
           eSports viewers

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract While eSports broadcasts and advertisers try to target viewers using static virtual in-match advertising, nearly no research regarding the subject exists. This brief communication presents first key results of an examination regarding the influence of static screen position of virtual in-match advertising, i.e., advertisements perceivable to the audience, on brand awareness in eSports broadcasts. The study is conducted using the eSports title “League of Legends” and is based on scientific insights regarding advertisement positioning in other media (magazines, websites, sports broadcasts, movies, and in-game advertising). Data were collected among students at two German universities and the answers of 705 students were considered for the study described in this paper. The data were examined using logistic regressions. Similar to results in other forms of media, our results indicate a fundamental relevance of advertisement position. Brand awareness between the best compared to the worst examined position differs by (nearly) a factor of nine. Against this backdrop, key practical implications and opportunities for future research are briefly addressed as well.

           Exklusionspotenziale

  • Prevention of sexual violence in sports boarding schools: a survey
           from Germany

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Numerous sexual violence cases have been reported in boarding schools as well as in sports organizations. However, no studies have been conducted so far that investigate the prevention of sexual violence in sports boarding schools. Our study explores to what extent sports boarding schools in Germany register sexual violence as a relevant problem in their organizations and which prevention measures they apply. Based on a theoretical framework of organizational development, the organizational structures, the organizational cultures and the grades of change toward the prevention of sexual violence were analyzed. To this end, a survey with representatives from all 59 sports boarding schools in Germany was conducted. The results reveal various aspects that can be improved regarding organizational development and specific prevention measures. Among other results, a regression analysis shows the importance to structurally anchor the topic in the organization, to develop an actively campaigning culture, to establish an internal self-obligation, and to conduct a theme-specific evaluation to ensure better protection of all athletes in sports boarding schools.

  • Just a stopgap for ‘real’ sports' Experiences with digital sport and
exercise activities during the COVID-19 pandemic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to an increase of digitally supported home-based sport and exercise activities. This paper asks how these digital sport and exercise (DSE) offers are experienced by consumers and compares the experiential value of DSE activities with similar on-site, offline sport and exercise (OSE) activities. The paper is based on cross-sectional online survey data from active members of two university sports centers in Germany. Findings reveal that a relative strength of DSE compared to similar OSE offers is the higher degree of autonomy experienced by users. However, this comes at the expense of the social, physical, affective, competence, and motivational experience. DSE courses are somewhat better rated by self-disciplined and healthy individuals, but lower rated by participants with a high motor competence. Overall, data lend support to the notion that DSE was just a stopgap for many during the lockdowns. For becoming a real alternative to on-site sports, DSE offers should be developed further in such a way that emotional and social experiences are enhanced.

  • Elite-level defensive performance in football: a systematic review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Background Defensive action can decisively affect football match performance. However, there has been limited translation of the existing academic literature into improvement in applied practice. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review of the literature to: (1) identify defence-related variables commonly linked to positive/negative performance outcomes, and thereby improve understanding of their potential applications; (2) determine potentially useful directions for future research. Methods We searched the databases SPORTDiscus, PubMed and Web of Knowledge Core Collection in May 2023 for observational studies of adult male, football defence-related data, gathered from 2004 onwards at official international or domestic elite-level competitions. Each of the 119 papers was scored for quality according to a 14-item checklist, which itself was based on the Critical Review Form. The findings were organised according to two major themes: (1) variables used in defensive performance analysis and (2) methodological issues and future avenues of research. Results Research found teams to vary the game styles that they had adopted, to decrease their spatial occupation of the pitch, and to increase intrateam movement synchronisation whilst defending. Given the research findings, regaining possession higher-up the pitch, whilst maintaining a balanced positioning and opting for an “intense” approach, appears advisable. Conclusion A notable research–practice gap was identified. To better address coaches’ “everyday concerns”, future research should (1) become more “process-oriented”, (2) acknowledge the specificities of certain subareas of the pitch, and (3) involve improved processing of spatial–temporal data.

  • Does COVID-19 facilitate gender inequality in article submission behavior'
To what extent is article submission behavior influenced by career status'
An exploration using the German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research as
           an example

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract During the COVID-19 pandemic, many governments closed schools and imposed social distancing requirements, limiting childcare options and requiring researchers to stay at home. Recent studies indicated that women are particularly negatively affected by the pandemic containment measures. Depending on discipline and type of publication, it is stated that the number of submissions by women has fallen dramatically, but submissions by men have remained constant or even increased. The aim of this study is to examine whether a decrease in article submissions during the COVID-19 pandemic by women also applies to the field of sport and exercise sciences using the German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research as an example. Furthermore, this study aimed to investigate to what extent career status has an influence on submission behavior during COVID-19. The current analysis focuses on 198 submissions to the German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research, which were systematically examined with regard to the first authorship of articles submitted from April 1st, 2019 to March 31st, 2021. Results of a log-linear analysis show that men submitted significantly more articles. The gap between women and men is greatest in the position of professors, which reflects the distribution of women and men in scientific employees. However, no significant differences in submission behavior are found before vs. during the pandemic. This study functions as a starting point for the discipline of sport and exercise science from which submission behavior should be further monitored taking into account individual and social factors which might influence submission behavior.

  • Digitale Kompetenzen angehender Sportlehrkräfte

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

  • Conceptualizing sustainable participation in the context of German
           football supporters

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Institutionalized supporter participation is a traditional part of German professional football clubs. Due to commercialization, some challenging issues have arisen in recent years regarding supporter participation. To develop new approaches for improving participation, the study uses a social sustainability perspective, illustrating that social sustainability elements help to develop and structure the potential for improvement of participation in German professional football. By identifying and discussing links between social sustainability and institutionalized supporter participation, we contribute to the conceptualization of sustainable participation. Our research supports the creation of an inclusive and sustainable fan community where fans can actively participate in decisions and actions that affect their current and future fandom environment. Based on the social sustainability principles of health, influence, competence, impartiality, and meaning-making, we compile the following characteristics of sustainable participation: social well-being oriented participation, direct influence, regular voting rights, representative participation, appealable resolutions, information-based participation, barrier-free participation, democratic voting, established constitutions, and encouraged participation. This conceptualization provides approaches and foundations for future investigations regarding participation research in football and practical implications for member associations, association members, league organizers, and other stakeholders to establish and improve institutionalized participation.

  • Interpretation of empirical results in intervention studies: a commentary
           and kick-off for discussion

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Sports science as an empirical science produces study results that are to be interpreted hypothesis-oriented. The validity of the interpretation of statistically and practically significant results depends on the one hand on the theoretical foundation of the research question and on the other hand on the concrete methodological procedure in intervention studies. Considering hypotheses at the empirical-content and statistical level, recurring interpretation difficulties arise when numbers are translated into words or recommendations for action. On the basis of two examples, a discussion in the scientific community is to be initiated, which could be continued in this journal in case of corresponding interest in methodological issues.

  • Kriterien eines aktivierenden Sportunterrichts

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

  • Impact of eSports semiprofessional practice on the trunk stabilizer muscle
           complex. A cross-sectional study

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Introduction ESports have emerged in the sporting paradigm achieving a great deal of importance both in terms of audience and economics. Professional players have to improve their performance through training, which leads to an increase in the risk of injuries derived from long periods of time spent a sitting position, sedentarism and repetitive movements. The most prevalent injury is low back pain (LBP), probably due to the professionals’ lifestyles, similar to the day-to-day activity of office workers but acquired at a younger age. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the morphology of the trunk stabilizing muscles in semiprofessional eSport players in comparison with healthy subjects, using ultrasonography. Methods A total of 20 participants were recruited (10 players from a semiprofessional eSports team and 10 age-matched healthy controls). Ultrasound measurements of the thickness of the transversus abdomini (TrAb), internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), rectus abdomini (RA) and lumbar multifidus (LMult) muscles, and interrecti distance (IRD) were recorded. Results Statistically significant differences were found with decreased thickness in the eSports group bilaterally in TrAb (p < 0.01) and IO (p < 0.05), right EO (p < 0.05) and right RA (p < 0.01); and decreased IRD (p < 0.01). Conclusions Statistically significant differences were found between young semiprofessional eSports players and healthy adults in this study, with morphologic characteristics similar to those found in older adults with chronic LBP.

  • Skill-related studies from youth to high-performance football:
           a scoping review

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The concept of skill is a key element in football and has been studied from many different perspectives. A global view on skill-related football interventions help comprehend and identify gaps in current knowledge. The aim of this scoping review was threefold: (a) to scope the theoretical bases, concepts and skills that have been used in skill-related interventions in football, (b) to summarize the skill-related interventions, (c) to identify research gaps. A scoping literature search was carried out following JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines in APA PsycINFO, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. The main inclusion criterium was that studies had to examine football players aged U15 (non-beginners) to adult (high-performance/professional), encompassing both genders across youth and high-performance levels, and consider all types of interventional studies published in English peer-reviewed journals, focusing on acute and long-term adaptations. A total of 4086 peer-reviewed journal articles were identified, 83 of them were fully analyzed, and three key results were obtained: (a) the examined articles predominantly used two theoretical approaches for football skills (self-organization approaches and information processing, 42.2 and 19.3%, respectively), or did not have any theoretical grounding (38.6%), (b) a multitude of different key concepts (> 60) have been used, (c) most football skill-related research was conducted in Europe (81.0%) with samples heavily focused on male participants (90.1%). Findings highlight the need to clarify the conceptualization of football skill and broaden the scope on football skill throughout the world, especially to include ecological research designs with female participants.
