  • Hypnobiome: A New Frontier of Hypnotherapy'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Abstract: Giuseppe De Benedittis
This work represents the first contribution aimed at identifying hypnotic communiations in therapeutic approaches of different orientations. In particular, it attempts to analyze a clinical case conducted according to a systemic-relational model to determine the hypnotic aspects unconsciously utilized by the therapist. Evaluating the hypothesis of whether, from a perspective of integration, hypnotic techniques and communications can be utilized by therapists of a different theo-retical approach, a case analysis is presented and analyzed.

  • The man who wasn’t there

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Abstract: Fabio Carnevale, Sandro Montanari
It is currently believed that addiction is a complex behavioral disorder that is influenced by biological, psychological, sociological factors, and that, as such, must be seen from a biopsychosocial perspective. The authors believe that there may be two main “magnets” that first stimulate and then stabilize addiction, fa-voring its relapse: the attempt to carry out a self-therapy of one’s affective dysregulation (alexithymia) and the activation of the memory of pleasure. After presenting a brief review on the use of hypnosis in the treatment of addictive dis-orders, the authors expose their own technique, Reverse Systematic Desensitiza-tion, illustrating it through a clinical case. The effectiveness of the technique in re-ducing the thought of the substance, therefore craving and relapse, is associated with an increased rate of maintained successful treatment.

  • The valuable contribution of proverbs in ericksonian clinical practice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Abstract: Valerio Pidone, Emanuele Mazzone
Milton Erickson used proverbs in his clinical practice to convey therapeutic messages in shared experience-based language. This article of a paremiological type offers a description of the historical origins, sources and gnomics of the proverb, its geographical spread and the analysis of the linguistic structure that underlies it: the metaphor. The article investigates the symbolic meaning of the proverb with reference to cognitive theories, neuroscience, theory of mind and Jungian archetypes and focuses on its use in ericksonian clinical practice.

  • The Psychic Figurability: the therapeutic and cognitive power of the
           imaginary

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Abstract: Valter Santilli
The need for the human mind to figure or picture the external world is funda-mentally dependent on the imagination. Many authors hold that the ability to create "pictures" of the world, up to and including the highest degree of abstraction, is a fundamental component of our mental functions. For this to be possible, a qualitative leap ahead in evolution was needed to produce what R. Thom defines as the primary intuition, or the mind’s ability to advance from simple sensorial perception to actually imagining external reality. This psychic figurability is hence a basic mental function which is highly active in dreamlike phenomena and in dreams, and in the visions which often arise in the hypnotic trance state. It is also massive-ly involved in the creative mental processes of the fields of both science and art. In the practice of psychotherapy, we frequently use images, or, more elaborately, metaphors, to describe both the internal and the external realities of a patient. For therapeutical purposes, we also induce regressive states, a neuropsychological dimension that facilitates the development of the ideational and hallucinatory phe-nomena that underpin the human capacity to imagine. One interesting aspect of psychotherapy is that both the therapist and the patient can share this regressive pathway, thanks to the special dual rapport that arises in hypnotherapy, and the shared work of psychoanalysis. Not only the state of mind but also the product of psychic figurability is shared, as in the clinical case described in the article.
