and effectiveness of PhR160 spray in the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia

    • Abstract: Title: A single-center non-blinded randomized clinical trial to assess the safety and effectiveness of PhR160 spray in the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia
Authors : Roshandel, H R Sheikh; Mirkazemi, R; Ahmadabadi, H R; Memarzadeh, M R; Zahedifard, N; Saffari, M; Jazani, M; Rahmani, M; Hosseini, M; Raei, M; Sharifi, AR; Ghadimi, F; Ameli, P; Valinejad, M; Mohtashami, R: COVID-19 is an emerging pandemic that caused a very widespread infection with more than 1000000 cases in Iran within a year. The main cause of mortality among patients with COVID-19 is pulmonary failure. In Iranian Traditional Medicine, essences have been used for curing pulmonary diseases. Pinen-Hydronoplacton-Ribonucleic acid (PHR) is an inhaler spray made of seven different plants, which all are used by humans and have desirable pharmacological features for treating pulmonary symptoms of COVID-19 patients. This study was conducted to assess the safety and effectiveness of PHR160 spray in improving pulmonary symptoms of COVID-19 patients. This was a single-centre, non-blinded randomized clinical trial with two parallel groups in two different wards of Baqiyatallah hospital, Tehran, Iran. Participants were 63 male patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia, divided into 2 groups of 32 in the intervention group and 31 in the control group. The intervention group received 5 days of PHR160 spray, 10 puffs each day, 300 micrograms in each puff in addition to the routine treatment. Oxygen saturation was measured by a pulse oximeter, every six hours and recorded daily. This study showed that administration of PhR 160 in patients of COVID-19 was safe, and it significantly increased the arterial oxygen saturation percentage in COVID-19 patients. In addition, it decreased hospitalization duration, dyspnea score, and cough score significantly in the patients. The statistical modelling test, with adjusting the age and respiratory rate for baseline and 4 days of the intervention, shows that the oxygen saturation percentage mean was significantly more in the intervention group by 5.14 units (p

  • Phytochemicals enriched Punica granatum L. peel extract promotes the

    • Abstract: Title: Phytochemicals enriched Punica granatum L. peel extract promotes the chondrocyte proliferation by inducing cell cycle progression and inhibiting of NO-induced cell death and ROS production
Authors : Shivnath, Neelam; Rawat, Vineeta; Siddiqui, Sahabjada; Jafri, Asif; Rais, Juhi; Gupta, Madhu; Khan, Mohd Sajid; Arshad, Md: Punica granatum L. has been used as a traditional remedy to treat sore throat, cough, digestive and skin disorders, urinary infection, arthritis and expel tape-worm. Modern research focuses on its use on arthritis, diabetes and cancer. The present study was conducted to identify the bioactive phytochemicals in the ethanolic extract of Punica granatum peel (PGP) through GC-MS to illustrate its proliferation, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic activities in an established in vitro primary cultured chondrocyte. The cells were treated with 25 μM indomethacin, positive control and different concentration of PGP in the absence or presence of different inhibitors such as (H2O2 for ROS production and sodium nitroprusside [SNP] for nitric oxide [NO] induced cell death). The cell viability assay and cell cycle analysis were performed to study the proliferation of cells. Oxidative stress was measured as intracellular ROS and anti-apoptotic activities were studied through nuclear staining assays like DAPI and PI-Exclusion staining. The GC-MS result indicates the presence various antioxidants such as kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin, luteolin, ascorbic acid, gallic acid, vitamin C and lycopene. The PGP treatment on chondrocytes shows increased proliferation and decreased apoptosis through the reduction of oxidative stress in a concentration-dependent manner. The rise in the total number of chondrocytes at higher doses of PGP was significant (p

  • Phyto-chemistry and therapeutic potential of litchi (Litchi chinensis
Sonn.): An age-old ingredient in traditional medicine

    • Abstract: Title: Phyto-chemistry and therapeutic potential of litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.): An age-old ingredient in traditional medicine
Authors : Mir, Hidayatullah; Perveen, Nusrat: The litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), long been used in traditional medicine, has been endowed by nature with myriad biological properties that makes it a potential crop for healing various sufferings of mankind. Different bioactive compounds like flavonoids and anthocyanins have been reported from pulp as well as the non-edible tissues such as seed, pericarp, flowers and leaves which possess strong free radical scavenging activities and can be used as anti-cancerous and anti-inflammation agents. Potential role of litchi seed extracts in preventing type 2-diabetes has been suggested in recent studies. Some components identified from litchi seeds are claimed to possess anti-cancer properties mainly against lung, liver, pulmonary and cervical cancer. Leaf extracts of litchi possess significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-pyretic activities. An innovative formulation, oligonol-L, derived from fruits of litchi is reported to possess chemo-preventive and chemo-protective potential against photo-injuries such as skin photo-ageing and cancer. Thus, it could be implied that litchi tree is studded with more blissful properties than hitherto conceded. However, intensive research is paramount to unveil the exact mechanism of action of the active components in order to exploit the therapeutic and preventive potentials of this crop. The main objective of this review is to provide comprehensive information on the pharmacological activities of litchi reported till date and suggest future investigations required to exploit the nutraceutical properties of this potential plant.Page(s): 29-39

  • UPLC-MS profiling, antimicrobial and antipyretic activities of Deverra
           scoparia Coss. & Dur. extracts

    • Abstract: Title: UPLC-MS profiling, antimicrobial and antipyretic activities of Deverra scoparia Coss. & Dur. extracts
Authors : Lilya, Harchaoui; Saida, Ouafi; Djamila, Chabane: Deverra scoparia Coss. & Dur. is a traditional medicinal plant with important biological properties, due to the presence of secondary metabolites. This study aimed to evaluate antimicrobial and antipyretic activities of infusion and ethereal extracts. The antimicrobial activity was tested using disk diffusion method against bacterial and fungal strains. While the antipyretic activity was assessed by yeast induced pyrexia in rats at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg for each extract. Results showed a strong antimicrobial activity range by the extracts; the infusion extract has an increased inhibition from 45±0.004 mm and 52±0.003 mm with bactericidal effect against all bacterial strains tested. The ethereal extract presented a strong antimicrobial activity about 32±0.001 mm and 48±0.001 mm with bacteriostatic effect with a value equal to 8 for all strains. The administration of infusion and ethereal extracts produced significant (p
