  • Numerical simulation of thermo-acoustic gas oscillation for nuclear
           application

      Abstract: Numerical simulations are performed to study the characteristics of thermo-acoustic oscillation of a gas confined in a loop-type pipe with the section of short and narrow channels. In order to simulate the irreversible heat exchange between the gas and the pipe wall, the compressible mass, momentum and energy conservation equations are solved in the loop pipe as well as the heat conduction equations in the pipe wall. Spontaneous oscillations are obtained when the temperature gradient along the narrow channel becomes large. It is found that the onset temperature of simulated thermo-acoustic oscillation agrees with that of the stability analysis and increases when the effect of gravity is not taken into account.

  • New phase change nanomaterial for solar use: synthesis and
           characterization

      Abstract: In this paper, we used a commercial paraffin type C25H52 which was doped with TiO2, ALCL3, and AL2O3 in the range of 0 and 20% by mass and atom. The monitoring of the temperature over time was measured during the descent of 150°C to ambient. For all dopants, the phase change time, thermal conductivity, latent heat, and specific heat increase with the doping rate and the mass of the paraffin. The experimental results show that the phase change time, thermal conductivity, latent heat, and specific heat are more important in the case of doping with ALCL3 compared to the other two dopants.

  • Study the damping and vibrational properties of polycarbonate reinforced
           ZrO2

      Abstract: In this paper, the effect of nano zirconia particles on damping characteristics of polycarbonate composites was investigated experimentally. The nano particles were added to polycarbonate matrix with five different weight percentage (wt %). Polycarbonate Nanocomposites filled with pristine and modified ‎Zirconium dioxide were prepared by simple melt compounding. All samples ‎were prepared by an injection molding process. The samples were studied before and after damage. Damage process was done with high velocity impact. The half-power bandwidth method was used to experimentally estimate the damping ratio. The experiments were designed based on an impulse actuator signal generated by the ‎shaker, and the responses were recorded using accelerometer sensors. The results of experiments showed that the damping properties of the composite were increased by adding nanoparticles to 3 wt% and decreased gently for samples with the upper content of nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) pictures were used to investigate the distribution of nano zirconia on the polycarbonate matrix and showed a homogeneous mixture of nanocomposites and strong bonding between zirconia and polycarbonate that increased damping properties and decreased vibration. Finally, the experimental modal analysis test was done after high-velocity impact damage process to investigate the effect of defection on the nano polycarbonate composites. The results showed a great decline in vibration and an increase of damping properties.

  • Analysis on the Influence of Building Envelope on Building Energy
           Efficiency in Severe Cold Area

      Abstract: With the rapid development of the global economy, the world energy consumption is increasing day by day. Mankind is facing the problem of energy shortage. Energy conservation and emission reduction has become the focus of countries all over the world. In order to study the influence of building envelope on building energy efficiency in severe cold area, the sensitivity analysis is used to analyze the influence relationship between building envelope and building energy efficiency. Combined with DeST simulation software, the building model is established, and the arc mean elasticity method is used to analyze the sensitivity of building energy load to different building envelope parameters. The results show that the external windows of the building envelope have the greatest impact on the building energy efficiency, followed by the external walls, and the roof has the least impact on the energy efficiency. The sensitivity coefficients of the annual cumulative load to the external windows, exterior walls and roofs of buildings are 7.93%, 5.76% and 5.75% respectively. Studying the influence of enclosure structure on building energy efficiency in severe cold areas has important practical value for reducing building energy consumption in severe cold areas, and provides data reference for scientifically improving building energy efficiency and building skill transformation in severe cold areas.

  • Simulation of mechanical relays under coupled electromagnetic physics and
           structural dynamics

      Abstract: The function of mechanical relays depends largely on the mechanics and electromagnetics. Both can be calculated separately using finite element analysis (FEA). In this specific application, the electromagnetic field, which is induced by a coil in the relay, generates forces in the component that lead to deformations in the geometry, which, in turn, influences the electromagnetic forces in the relay. The aim of this simulation is to couple both physics so that the mechanics and electromagnetics can be calculated in a combined model. For this purpose, the properties for mechanical deformations and magnetic fields are simulated with the software Comsol Multiphysics. The electromagnetic forces are calculated in the electromagnetic model and coupled into the structure in the mechanical model using Maxwell’s surface tension tensor. The relay is operated by a voltage fed into the coil and is reset via a spring at the upper end of the relay. In this way, a work cycle of the relay can be simulated. The calculation can be used to determine the electromagnetic forces necessary to trigger the relay. Structural dynamic calculations in the electromagnetic field are possible, and the magnetic flux density in the corresponding areas can be optimised. Furthermore, interfering stray fields in the course of deformation can be determined, and the properties of the coil and the iron core can be optimised. This way, the function of a mechanical relay can be significantly improved.

  • Design and characterization of a new microscopy probe using COMSOL and

      Abstract: This paper presents the design, simulation, and analysis of different 3D-shapes of scanning near-field optical microscopy probes, allowing the acquisition of both topographic and optical images. The study is conducted using COMSOL and ANSYS simulation tools to study the probe sensitivity and deflection. The simulation calculations of deflection and von Mises stress are denoted, analyzed, and compared based on the change in the probe shapes for the same applied force. The results obtained from the two finite element tools were similar, converged to the same ideal design, and showed the impact of the probe structure on the probe performance.

  • Multiphysics based Modal and Harmonic Analysis of Axial Turbines

      Abstract: The presented work discusses the vibration behavior of an axial turbine, analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) using commercial software ANSYS®. The turbine was modeled as a 2-D plate type of structure discretized with 4-noded shell 63 elements to save computational time. Constraints were applied keeping in view the actual operating conditions. The turbine was modeled with more than one FE meshes. Mesh sensitivity analysis was carried out to ensure the quality and independence of the results. Modal analysis was conducted to calculate a few initial natural frequencies. Results were studied against the operating frequency of the turbine. After carrying out the modal analysis, harmonic analysis was performed to see the response of the turbine under dynamic loading. The nature and cause of the dynamic loading are also discussed in relation to dynamic behavior. It was observed that the turbine is safe in its entire range of operation as far as the phenomenon of resonance is concerned. Also, it was observed that the maximum harmonic response of the turbine on the application of dynamic loading is far lesser than its failure limit within the specified operating range.
