  • Coexistence of Trust and Opportunism in Cooperative Projects between
           Startups

    • Authors: Caroline Cordova Bicudo da Costa, Edgar Reyes Junior, Fagner de Oliveira Dias
Abstract: The present study starts from the paradox of the coexistence of opportunism and trust in inter- organizational relationships to analyze how opportunism and trust develop in cooperative projects between startups. To this end, six projects were analyzed through ten semi-structured interviews in the context of a multiple case study. The data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. As the main results, the coexistence of trust and opportunism was observed, and it did not threaten the continuity of cooperative projects. An interactional dynamic of opportunistic bases emerged when it was not possible to identify the integrity-based dimension of trust. Also, opportunism was not identified in projects where the integrity-based dimension existed. The study contributes to the literature on the coexistence of trust in the context of cooperation. There are no records of empirical research on the phenomenon in cooperative projects. The results also offer practical implications about the relevance of competencies that allow the management of relationships with different levels of trust and opportunism.

  • Epistemological Possibilities of Public Administration Theories: from
           Paradigms to Epistemic Matrices

    • Authors: Patrícia Araújo Silva, Ana Cristina Batista-dos-Santos
Abstract: This study aims to contribute to the literature on public administration by conducting epistemological research on the main trends in the field, updating them with the Circle of Epistemic Matrices proposed by Paes de Paula (2016). For this, (a) it starts from the essay written by Andion (2012), which carried out a critical study on the trajectory of the field of public administration in Brazil and the different theoretical lines that compose it, based on the paradigms model built by Burrell and Morgan (1979); and (b) it analyzes the main lines that compose the field of public administration, called State-centric, Pluralist, New Public Administration New Public Service, and Digital Era Governance, in light of the Circle of Epistemic Matrices proposed by Paes de Paula. As results, it confirms that functionalist sociological approaches have a strong influence on the field of public administration. Greater dialogue is suggested between the lines that compose the field and the development of new matrix propositions – giving special attention to the digital transformation driven by Digital Era Governance and by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-) health crisis – taking into account that the instrumental rational logic is insufficient to explain the phenomena of the reality, even if it is needed for streamlining public goods and interests. Finally, reflections are presented along with an agenda for future research.

  • Influence of Environmental Innovation on Corporate Sustainability in Latin
           American Companies

    • Authors: Risolene Alves de Macena Araújo, Thamirys Sousa Correia, Renata Paes de Barros Camara
Abstract: The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of environmental innovation on corporate sustainability in the main capital markets in Latin America from the perspective of the Resource-Based View. To this end, with a sample of 202 Latin American companies, data from Thomson Reuters® were collected from 2012 to 2019. The dependent variable corporate sustainability was measured by the ESG score and the explanatory variable was represented by Environmental Innovation. The estimation was performed using robust random effects regression, with panel data. The results showed that environmental innovation explains corporate sustainability when measured by the overall score of the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) dimensions. Nevertheless, when analyzing each dimension individually, environmental innovation is only explained by corporate governance. A possible justification is the intrinsic characteristics of governance, since it is inserted in a context focused on transparency before the market, responsibility, resource allocation, corporate sustainability, strategic management, as well as the protection of stakeholder rights. In this aspect, the findings contribute to the academic debate on the relevance of environmental innovation for sustainable development, especially for the survival of companies operating in highly competitive markets. Thus, the ability to innovate becomes an essential demand for public companies, and analyzing corporate sustainability standards and environmental innovation actions can provide valuable information about the performance of companies.

  • The Aging Process for Women in Leadership Positions: The Imminence of
           Symbolic Death and Rebirth

    • Authors: Vanessa Cepellos, Maria José Tonelli
Abstract: This article explores how women in leadership positions experience and develop ways to deal with their aging process in organizations in Brazil. As women have reached these top positions relatively recently, studies on the careers of younger women still dominate the literature. For this reason, the literature on aging women who hold corporate leadership positions is still scarce. Based on empirical data obtained from 58 in-depth interviews based on grounded theory, this research showed that women experience their aging process as symbolic physical, social, and professional deaths and face an age glass ceiling due to their age. However, they also create new life stories based on a redefinition of work and/or a search for a new career, a phenomenon we call ‘symbolic rebirth.’ This paper proposes concepts related to how women see their aging process, uncovering the dynamics and implications of aging for women. There seems to be no room to aging in corporations, even for women in leadership positions. Despite the innumerable changes that have taken place in recent decades, this organizational space is still associated with the male gender, and ageism persists even for women who are in top-ranking executive positions in corporations.

  • Understanding the Deliberation Practice in a Controllership from the
           Performative Judgement Perspective

    • Authors: Paschoal Tadeu Russo, José Roberto Leandro, Marcio Luiz Borinelli, Rodrigo Paiva Souza
Abstract: This research analyzed deliberation practice in a controllership, mainly the decision to replace a given budgetary practice by another, in light of performative judgements, in a big-sized company in São Paulo City, between 2017 and 2020. The research followed the interpretative design, and adopted the research-action strategy. Participatory observation, in-depth interviews (initial research stage) and documental analyses were the techniques applied to find evidences. The field zooming in and zooming out movements were used to describe the elements featuring this practice, by switching the theoretical lens to better understand the whole and the elements composing it. Data analysis followed the framework proposed by Bispo (2015). We have found four fragments of practices encompassing the material arrangements where deliberation takes place: financial management practice, accounting management practice, expense management practice and information technology management practice. Different from the accountability management mainstream, which assumes rationality driven by economic aims, we have observed that deliberation in the assessed controllership is boosted by the “rationality of becoming” as permanent flow. Such a rationality is collectively built due to practical wisdom and to the ability of making practical decisions that form wisdom and practical judgements. It simultaneously shows its fragility in comparison to what is expected from the economic paradigm, as well as its richness, by encompassing the pluralism and dynamics of the context it is inserted in.

  • Reframing “Organizations and Society” from the Escrevivências: for a
Form of Management from and in the Gaps

    • Authors: Fernanda Rocha da Silva, Alexandre de Padua Carrieri
Abstract: This is not a conventional manuscript that follows the established norms of research in organizational studies, but it does not give up the scientificity required by academia. It is yet another way of doing and writing, as it occurs with the practices developed by those who have been secluded from the prevailing way of organizing in Brazil. Therefore, we propose to rethink the forms of management from the experiences of lacunar subjects and knowledge forms, from the social-historical perspective on the formation of the boundaries of this scientific field. To do so, we adjust our lenses to frame what lies outside the privileged enunciative locus of the instrumental rationality ruling the field and come across Carolina Maria de Jesus and her escrevivências about a reality that has been unnoticed by management practices according to the success model of this form of rationality. Therefore, we present a theoretical and scientific article, in which literature is employed as source material to outline the proposed reflections and reframe “organizations and society” from the know-how of those who have been underprivileged by dominant reason.

  • Phronesis, Moral Judgment, and Ethical Decision Making: Experiences of
Public Managers in the Area of Emergency Management

    • Authors: Laís Silveira Santos, Mauricio C. Serafim
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to investigate how phronesis manifests itself in moral judgment based on the experience of public managers in situations of ethical decisions in the area of emergency management (risk and disaster management). We conducted a literature review on phronesis as a virtue of “acting well.” As methodological procedures guided by a phenomenological epistemology and qualitative approach, an in-depth interview, non-participant observation, and document analysis were conducted. The discussion of data was organized into three sections: context and circumstances in the area of emergency management, experience and tacit knowledge of managers, and cognitive, affective, and reflexive composition of phronesis. Some elements of phronesis are perceptible and contribute to the ethical decision-making process in view of the possibilities of limiting moral judgment, such as the context and contingency circumstances of emergencies, the affective dimension such as empathy, the need for mediation between instrumental aspects and the will to act with compassion, counseling as a reflective element, and memory and learning from past experiences. The conclusion is that, when conditions for moral judgment are not favorable and/or there are limiting factors - such as excess of technical and/or bureaucratic issues, a context of insecurity, and a purpose of protecting human life -, phronesis may help to develop an enlightened knowledge for the individual exposed to reviews, education and clarification about the social, political, and organizational context to which she or he belongs.

  • Poetry in Management Research

    • Authors: Cláudia Simone Antonello, Eduardo Paes Barreto Davel
Abstract: Poetry can contribute to advance management research. Reflecting on poetry as a path to regenerate management research lets us understand the ways of researching and the constitution of the researcher. Poetry is a way to start the construction of meaning and, at the same time, a coping mechanism, a way of re-existing not to de-exist. The poetic representation of lives is not an end in itself. The goal is political: to change the way we think about people and their lives in organizations using the poetic format. The researcher-poet makes the world visible from new perspectives and understandings, evidencing a political-ethical responsibility regarding the poetic. Poetry can move beyond prescribed ways of reading, writing, understanding, and ‘doing’ organizations and management, connecting itself to ethical considerations of voice and power dynamics.
