  • Comparative study of forage production and nutritional quality of crop
varieties of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), in Peru's humid and dry puna

The study was carried out in the Casaracra experimental center, at an altitude of 3,819 meters above sea level, belonging to the Daniel Alcides Carrión National University. Three treatments were used: alfalfa WL 350 (T1), alfalfa W 440 (T2) and alfalfa Brown 6 (T3). Forage production was determined in green matter (MV), dry matter (DM) and percent of dry matter content. Five variables were analyzed for nutritional quality: total protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, calcium and phosphorus. The data obtained were analyzed using a completely random design, as well as the Tukey's test of significance (p<0.05). The results of forage production in MV and DM showed no significant differences (p<0.05) between treatments T2 and T3, as well in the percentage of dry matter between treatments T1 and T3. In nutritional quality, the variables total protein, fibers and minerals did not show significant differences (p<0.05) among the three treatments. It is concluded that treatment T2 and T3 showed better production of green and dry forage, being recommended for sowing in the humid and dry zones of the Peruvian puna. Therefore, for nutritional quality, all treatments were suitable for livestock feeding.

  • Evaluation and comparison of two DNA extraction protocols from three types
           of sheep samples

    • Abstract: RESUMEN. In molecular studies, having an excellent quantity and quality of DNA is essential. The aim of this study was to analyse two genomic DNA extraction methods based on the Chelex and Proteinase K protocols from whole blood samples, blood impregnated on filter paper and sheep hairs (n = 30 samples). The determination of quality and quantity of the DNA was carried out through spectrophotometry. To confirm the presence of amplified products, the extracted DNA was analysed by agarose gel electrophoresis and cPCR. The results showed a high level of variation for concentrations and purities of DNA, where the highest concentration of DNA was with the Proteinase K protocol from filter paper (151.75 ng / µl), while with the hair sample the lower means, both for Chelex (20.61 ng/µl) and Proteinase K (18.25 ng/µl). Regarding purity, the Chelex extraction method presented a higher frequency of contaminated samples (66%); while for the Proteinase K protocol, the highest purity values were found in the optimal (33%) and acceptable (27%) categories.

  • Comparative study of the internal quality of the egg in three genotypes of
           free-range layers.

    • Abstract: RESUMEN. Comparative study of the internal egg quality in three genotypes of free-range layers. The internal quality of the eggs laid by three genotypes of hens destined for semi-intensive systems: the three-way cross Campero Casilda, the self-sexing layer Negra INTA and a Rhode Island Red strain was evaluated. Between 26 and 70 weeks of age random samples of 15 eggs from each group were removed at regular intervals of four weeks. In each egg, the height and the greater and lesser diameters of the yolk and the height, length and width of the albumen were measured. As indicators of internal quality, the yolk and albumen indices and the Haug units were calculated. The dynamic pattern of the three indicators and the variables involved in their calculation was evaluated by non-linear and linear regression on hens age. The eggs of the three genetic groups presented a high internal quality, which was maintained throughout the laying cycle without differences in the indicators related to the albumen but with a more advantageous behavior of the yolk component in the case of the three way cross Campero Casilda, which valorizes it as a dual-purpose option for semi-intensive systems.
