Abstract: Objective Slow-release GnRH agonist implants (SRI) are used for reversiblemedical downregulation of testicular function in male dogs as an alternative tosurgery. The 4.7 mg deslorelin SRI should reduce testosterone after6–8 weeks and induce castration-like effects for 6 months (mon). However, some individual variation is described in the field in regard to onsetand duration of effect. For this reason, we aimed to study the effects of the4.7 mg deslorelin SRI in a larger cohort. Material and methods In total 50 intact, healthy male dogs (12–48months, mon; 9–40 kg) were treated with a 4.7 mgdeslorelin SRI into the umbilical area (TG, n=45) or served as untreatedcontrols (CG, n=5). CG dogs were surgically castrated after measurementof testicular dimensions and blood sampling for testosterone. In TG, SRIsremained for 5 mon in place and subsequently 3–7 male dogs weresurgically castrated at removal (week, W 0) or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 10weeks later. Examination parameters were testicular dimensions (beforetreatment, at 4, 8, 12 W, 5 mon, weekly until castration), testosterone(before treatment, at 8 W, 5 mon, castration) and testicular histology(castration). Results Whereas examination parameters did not differ between CG and TGbefore treatment, testicular volume and testosterone was significantly reducedat all time points during treatment. In all but 3 (8 W) and 2 male dogs(5 mon) testosterone was basal during treatment before removal, whereas theparameters were significantly reduced compared to pre-treatment in therespective dogs. After implant removal, testosterone and testicular volumesincreased. However, different to earlier studies, the „restart“was more variable with individual basal testosterone until W7, but alsophysiological testosterone concentrations in W2. Similarly, histologicaltesticular findings at castration were quite variable: besides an arrest onspermatogonia and spermatocytes, elongated spermatids with normalspermatogenesis were found in individual dogs. Conclusion Our study confirms the efficacy of the deslorelin SRI, but alsoindividual variation especially regarding reversibility of effects on endocrineand germinative testicular function. Clinical relevance Deslorelin SRIs offer a suitable alternative tosurgical castration with individual variation to be considered when used inclinical practice.

  • Listening, reading, writing – which method leads to the best learning
           outcome'

Authors: Güldenpfennig; Janine, Bartel, Alexander, Arlt, Sebastian

Abstract: Objective Innovative teaching strategies such as case-based learning and hands-on training are more and more integrated into undergraduate veterinary teaching. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that lectures still play an important role in many vet schools. Nowadays, however, lectures are questioned to be motivating and engaging enough for a long-lasting learning retention. In this context, we compared acceptance and learning outcome of the teaching methods reading, writing, and listening to a presentation. Material and methods In structured settings based on a cross-over design, 151 students in their fifth year attending a 2-weeks clinical rotation at the Clinic for Animal Reproduction were asked to read papers, listen to a presentation by a lecturer, and to write a summary in group work. Each task dealt with 1 of 3 topics from the field of animal reproduction. A week later, the students were asked to complete a multiple-choice test and an evaluation form. The test contained questions about each of the covered topics as well as a fourth topic, which was not taught in context of this project to assess the students’ prior knowledge. Results The results revealed that writing a summary in group work led to the best learning outcome, but it cannot be ruled out that learning success may have depended to a large extent on group work. Furthermore, the results did not differ significantly from the second-best teaching method listening to a presentation. The teaching method students preferred most was the lecture, followed by reading papers and writing a summary. Conclusions We conclude that presentations by lecturers are still an important teaching method but can be complemented by writing tasks, which may be used in specific settings as a possible way to improve learning outcome in veterinary education. Conclusion for practice Our project supports the assumption that more active, student-centered learning approaches such as writing summaries can lead to more engagement and a better learning retention. In addition, training writing skills is important because clinical reports and other written communication are relevant parts of daily veterinary routine.

  • Diagnostischer Nutzen des Anti-Müller-Hormons in der Kleintierpraxis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Walter; Beate
      Pages: 252 - 257

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Bäumer; Wolfgang, Bröer, Sonja
      Pages: 258 - 263

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Zelck; Alexandra B., Köhler, Claudia, Kiefer, Ingmar
      Pages: 264 - 275

Authors: Schmid; Sarah, Sievert, Maren, Wehrend, Axel
      Pages: 278 - 284

Abstract: Vom 22. bis 24.

Abstract: Objectives Perioperative prophylactic antibiotics (PPA) are widely used in veterinary medicine to prevent surgical site infections (SSI). Current guidelines advocate the use in clean procedures only if surgeries exceed 90 minutes, or in patients with an ASA score ≥3. Procedure specific recommendations are currently lacking. The following study aimed to analyze the protective effect of PPA in dogs undergoing open splenectomy. Methods The electronic database of our institution was searched for dogs that underwent splenectomy between 10/2017 and 01/2023. Data collection included age at presentation, breed, weight, reason for splenectomy, diagnosis, ASA class, PPA regime, surgery time, anesthesia time, lowest blood oxygen concentration during anesthesia, lowest body temperature, and lowest blood pressure during surgery as well as duration of hospitalization. Dogs were included if a follow-up of 30 days after surgery was available, or if death occurred within this timeframe. Results A total of 112 dogs were included. Of these, 46 dogs received PPA, and 66 did not. Most dogs were classified ASA 3 or higher (PPA 87%, non-PPA 80.3%). One SSI (1.5% SSI rate) occurred in the non-PPA group (overall SSI rate 0.9%). Due to the low SSI rate, statistical analysis of risk factors for SSI development was not possible. Conclusion The described infection rate of 1.5% without PPA indicates, that splenectomy does not qualify as high-risk surgery for SSI, even in patients with ASA class 3 or higher. Clinical Relevance As splenectomies are frequently performed, the findings of the current study could have a major impact on the overall antimicrobial burden in routine veterinary practice.

Abstract: Objective To evaluate different methods of monitoring body temperature in anesthetized dogs with comparison to core temperature obtained via esophageal probe. Methods Client-owned dogs undergoing general anesthesia for various procedures were included in this observational study. The temperature was taken sequentially every 10 minutes from the rectum, axilla, and nasal cavity with a digital thermistor thermometer, and compared to esophageal core temperature via paired t-tests. Differences from the gold standard esophageal temperature were assessed via Bland-Altman plots and further evaluated for factors like time under anesthesia and presence of Hypo-/Normo- or Hyperthermia. In addition, it was analyzed whether a correction factor for peripheral measurement sites (nasal cavity and axilla) would be applicable in a reliable representation of the body temperature. The level of significance in all tests was set at p

  • Die Urinuntersuchung bei Hund und Katze, Teil 1: Physikalische und
           chemische Urinuntersuchung

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Seigner; Sandra, Weber, Karin, Dorsch, Roswitha
      Pages: 168 - 181

  • Novel approach for the treatment of canine elbow hygroma with
           extracorporeal shockwaves

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Verhoeven; Anika, Huels, Nikolaus, Harms, Oliver
      Pages: 182 - 188
Abstract: A hygroma is a fluid filled cavity, which appears due to repetitive traumata over bony prominences. For canine elbow hygroma there is no satisfactory treatment option available. Small hygromas should not be treated at all. Larger hygromas that restrict the dog in daily life, are infected, painful, or ulcerated should be treated surgically with drainage or total excision. Surgical treatment of hygromas results in long rehabilitation times and is associated with a high complication rate. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is widely used in human and veterinary rehabilitation medicine since several years. Even the mechanisms of action are not fully understood it has a wide range of indications. ESWT provides anti-inflammatory effects, promotes microcirculation, and is used for pain relief. In this case series of 4 consecutive cases in 3 dogs we treated hygromas with extracorporeal shockwaves each for 3 to 6 times usually on a weekly basis. All hygromas regressed completely and no complications were noted. Overall ESWT seems to provide a safe, easy-to-use, as well as cost-effective alternative treatment option for canine elbow hygroma.

  • Gallbladder torsion in an 11-month-old Labrador Retriever

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Theurer; Jannina, Himmelsbach, Peter, Sinzinger, Wolfgang, Hartmann, Antje
      Pages: 189 - 193
Abstract: An intact male Labrador Retriever was presented with signs of an acute abdomen and generalized weakness. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a distended, horizontally orientated and caudally displaced gallbladder with a thickened wall. Computed tomography (CT) showed an abrupt tapering of the cystic duct in addition to the displacement of the gallbladder. On laparotomy a complete gallbladder torsion was diagnosed. After cholecystectomy the dog made a full recovery. Gallbladder torsion should be considered as a rare, potential differential diagnosis in dogs with an acute abdomen.

  • Neuroendokrines Karzinom der Gallenblase als seltene Ursache für Meläna
           und Hämatemesis beim Hund

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Krämer; Anna Lena, Seehusen, Frauke, Nolff, Mirja Christine
      Pages: 194 - 200

  • Surgical removal of an atypical histiocytic cell proliferation in a
           bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps)

Authors: Digwa; Kathrin, Wittenberg-Voges, Liza, Hansmann, Florian, Fehr, Michael
      Pages: 201 - 208
Abstract: A 4-year-old female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was referred to the Clinic for Small Mammals, Reptiles and Birds of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany for diagnostics and treatment of a growing mass in the right cervical region. The owner reported that the mass had grown over the past 4 weeks with only little alteration in the lizard´s behavior when the animal started rubbing its neck against the cage equipment. Physical examination as well as ultrasonographic and computed tomographic diagnostics revealed a highly vascularized mass, which allowed for the hypothesis of an aneurysm or a neoplasia. Complete surgical resection of the mass could be performed uneventfully. The bearded dragon recovered well from anesthesia and the surgical procedure. The microbiological sample of the excised mass revealed Group F-67 Salmonella. Histopathological examination of the excised mass revealed a histiocytic cell proliferation with centrally located blood filled cavities, hemorrhages and granulation tissue resembling features of a pseudoaneurysm. This report describes the diagnosis of an atypical growing mass in a bearded dragon and its successful removal.
