  • Measurement of paraoxonase and telomerase enzymes and HDL (high density
           lipoprotein) values and research of their possible relationships with each
           other in bloodserum of obese cats

      Abstract: Today, obesity is seen as a serious health problem in domestic cats. Paraoxonase1 (PON1) is a negative acute phase protein with anti-inflammatory properties. PON1 is transported by linking to different parts of HDL in the blood and has a protective feature of HDL against oxidation. Telomerase is reverse transcriptase enzyme that synthesizes and protects telomeres. Telomere length becomes shorter due to stress, obesity, and lack of exercise. In this study, paraoxonase1, telomerase enzymes and HDL values in blood serum of obese and non-obese cats were measured and their relationships with each other were evaluated. Body fat ratio in cats with body fat measurement system, those above 30% were evaluated as obese, and those below 30% were evaluated as the control group. Paraoxonase1 (p<0.001), telomerase (p<0.001) and HDL (p<0.008) values showed a statistically significant difference between the both groups, it was found to be lower in the obese group compared to the control group. As a result; paraoxonase1 and telomerase enzymes which are parameters of oxidative stress and are known to decrease in inflammation, were also found to be decreased in obese cats. The fact that HDL values are lower than the control group is an indicator that there are diseases that occur together with obesity.

  • Effects of PMSG application time on fertility in estrus-synchronized Kilis
           goat lambs out of season

      Abstract: Since their reproduction is seasonal, goat lambs can not mate before the breeding season begins, even if they have reached breeding maturity. This situation leads to economic losses for farmers. Estrus synchronization with progesterone and PMSG combination is widely practiced to produce off-season heat. However, different applications are made regarding the dose and timing of PMSG. In the study, the effects of PMSG (500 IU) administration at two different times on estrus and pregnancy rates and the number of offspring were investigated in estrus-synchronized goat lambs. Twenty three kilis goat lambs 13-15 months old that had never mated before were treated (out of season) with a progesterone sponge (20 mg flugestone acetate) for 11 days and 250 mcg PGF2α two days before sponge removal. While PMSG was applied to lambs in group 1 (n:11, hour -48 group) two days before sponge removal, it was applied to lambs in group 2 (n:12, hour 0 group) on the day of sponge removal. Goat lambs standing to be mounted were considered in estrus and mated. All goats in both groups showed estrus. The pregnancy (lambing) rate (54.6% vs. 25.0%, respectively, P>0.05) and total number of offspring (7 vs. 3, respectively, P>0.05) of the 1. (hour -48) group were found numerically higher than the 2. (hour 0) group, but the differences between groups were not statistically significant. Considering the economic values of numerical increase in the pregnancy rate and the total number of offspring, it was concluded that it may be more beneficial to apply PMSG 48 hours before the sponge removal rather than at the time of sponge withdrawal out of the breeding season in Kilis goat lambs.

  • İki ceylanda (Gazella subgutturosa) görülen parazitik pnömoni ve
           Trueperella pyogenes ve Candida albicans ile ilişkili nekrotik-purulent

      Abstract: This study presents the macroscobical, histopathological and bacteriological findings of Trueperella pyogenes and Candida albicans associated necrotic-purulent bronchopneumonia and parasitic pneumonia in captive gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa). Two male gazelles were found dead in the Sanliurfa Kızılkuyu Wildlife Reserve Area which were brought to the University of Harran, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pathology for necropsy. At necropsy detected foci 1-1,5 cm in diameter, whitish color, soft consistency in the lung. There are exudate creamy the cut section of the foci. The adult parasites and coagulated blood were observed in the lumen some of the bronchi. In the microscopical examination, it was observed necrotic-purulent bronchopneumonia foci and the fungal hyphae in the lung. The parasites were encountered in the lumen some of the bronchiole. In the bacteriological examination, T. pyogenes and Candida albicans were isolated as the major pathogen. This is the first report of parasitic pneumonia and necrotic-purulent bronchopneumonia caused by T. pyogenes and Candida albicans in gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa.

  • Investigations of adenosine deaminase 1, paraoxonase 1, C-reactive protein
           and serum amyloid A levels in cats infected with calicivirus. (Calicivirus
           ile enfekte kedilerde adenozin deaminaz 1, paraoksonaz 1, C-reaktif
           protein ve serum amiloid A düzeylerinin araştırılması)

      Abstract: ÖZBu çalışma ile feline calicivirus (FCV) ile enfekte kedilerde hücresel immün yanıtın, oksidatif stresin ve yangısal sürecin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada FCV ile enfekte 20 adet kedi ve 10 adet klinik olarak sağlıklı kedi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada tüm kedilerden toplanan serum örneklerinde kedi spesifik ELISA test kitleri kullanılarak adenozin deaminaz 1 (ADA-1), paraoksonaz 1 (PON-1), C-reaktif protein (CRP) ve serum amiloid A (SAA) düzeyleri belirlenmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda FCV ile enfekte kedilerin serum ADA-1, SAA ve CRP düzeyleri kontrol grubununkilerden istatistiksel olarak önemli düzeyde yüksek bulunmuştur. Ayrıca enfekte kedilerin PON-1 düzeyleri ise kontrol grubudan önemli düzeyde düşük olduğu belirlenmiştir (p<0,001). Yapılan bu çalışmada, ADA-1 ile PON-1 arasında yüksek düzeyde anlamlı negatif korelasyon (r=-0,73; p<0,001) saptanırken diğer parametreler arasında ise orta düzeyde korelasyonlar belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen veriler FCV ile enfekte kedilerde ADA-1 düzeyindeki artış aktive olmuş hücresel yanıtı, PON-1 düzeyindeki düşüş oksidatif stresin geliştiğini, SAA ve CRP düzeylerindeki artışlar ise bu kedilerde akut faz yanıtın geliştiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Sonuç olarak, bu çalışma ile FCV ile enfekte kedilerde ADA-1’in hücresel immün yanıtın durumunun belirlenmesinde, PON-1’in oksidatif stres ve antioksidan kapasitenin belirlenmesinde ve ayrıca SAA ve CRP’nin gelişen yangıya bağlı akut faz yanıtın belirlenmesinde yararlı biyomarkırlar olarak kullanılabileceği ortaya konulmuştur. Anahtar Kelimeler: Biyokimya, Calicivirus, KediABSTRACT : The aims of this study were determination of cellular immune responses, oxidative stress, and inflammatory responses in cats infected with FCV. In the study, 20 cats infected with FCV and 10 clinically healthy cats were used. In the study, adenosine deaminase 1 (ADA-1), paraoxonase 1 (PON-1), C reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) levels were determined in collected serum samples of all the cats, using cat-specific ELISA test kits. In the present study, serum concentrations of ADA-1, SAA and CRP were significantly higher than those of control group (p< 0,001). Wheras PON-1 concentrations were found to be significantly low compared to that of control group. Furthermore, high negative correlations were obtained between ADA-1 and PON-1 (r=-0,73; p<0,001), while modarete correlations were obtained between other parameters. In this study, elevated serum ADA-1 levels indicate activated cellular immune responses and decreased PON-1 levels indicate oxidative stress. Furthermore, increased SAA and CRP levels determine the development of acute phase responses in cats infected with FCV. In conclusion, ADA-1 and PON-1 can be useful biomarkers for detecting activated cellular immune responses and oxidative stress in cats infected with FCV, respectively. Furthermore, SAA and CRP can be used to detect acute phase responses in infected cats with FCV.Key words: Biochemistry, Calicivirus, Cat

  • Some Fertility Traits of Holstein Friesian Cattle Raised at Various
           Production Scales in the Western Mediterranean Region of Turkey

      Abstract: Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye'nin Batı Akdeniz Bölgesi'ndeki süt sığırcılığı işletmelerinin fertilite özelliklerini araştırmak ve üretim ölçekleri ile diğer çevresel faktörlerin fertilite özelliklerine etkisini belirlemektir. Çalışmada süt sığırcılığı işletmeleri hayvan sayısına göre Grup I (1-10 baş), Grup II (11-50 baş), Grup III (51-100 baş) ve Grup IV (≥101 baş) olmak üzere 4 gruba ayrılmıştır. Sonuçlar, işletmelerin üretim ölçekleri ile buzağılama aralıkları ve servis periyodları arasındaki ilişkinin oldukça anlamlı olduğunu göstermiştir (P<0,001). Grup I en yüksek buzağılama aralığına (468,95 ± 7,93 gün) ve en yüksek servis periyoduna (185,95 ± 7,93 gün) sahipken Grup II’nin en düşük buzağılama aralığı (414,06 ± 5,71 gün) ve servis periyodu (131.06 ± 5.71 gün) değerlerini taşıdığı saptanmıştır. Bu çalışma, işletmelerin üretim ölçeğinin fertilite özelliklerini etkileyen ana çevresel faktörlerden biri olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu nedenle, bölgede süt verimini artırmaya yönelik ıslah yerine, ekonomik verime odaklı süt ve döl verimini içine alan kapsamlı bir ıslah faaliyetinin daha doğru olacağına inanılmaktadır.

  • COVID-19 infections in pets such as cats and dogs

      Abstract: Coronaviruses are a very large group of virus families that can cause diseases in both different animal species and humans. Infections with different coronaviruses are seen in cats and dogs. The epidemic due to COVID-19 infection and its etiological agent SARS-CoV-2, which is a coronavirus, continues to spread very rapidly all over the world. In this article, we aimed to compile published studies on COVID-19 infections in cats and dogs, which we are in close contact with. When the studies were examined, it was understood that cats were more sensitive to SARS-CoV-2 than dogs after contact with COVID-19 positive individuals in quarantine. Cats may show symptoms in case of infection, compared to dogs. The RBD region where SARS-CoV-2 binds to ACE2 receptors is reported more similar to humans in cats than dogs. ACE2 protein seemed very similar to humans in both cats and dogs compared to other mammals. ACE2 receptor is highly expressed in different tissues of them, according to the study data examined. In a conclusion, SARS-CoV-2 can be detected because ACE2 is frequently expressed in different tissues in domestic animals such as cats and dogs, and the binding site is similar to human ACE2 receptors. In order to prevent zoonotic infections such as COVID-19 infections during the epidemic period when different disciplines need to work together with a single health approach, we believe that molecular surveillance studies should be carried out on our close friends such as cats and dogs. The data should be presented in public database and followed.

  • Histological and histometric study of the small intestine in Stara Zagora
           white turkey in age aspect

      Abstract: Thirty clinically healthy Stara Zagora white turkeys (15 females and 15 males) were used for the study. Eighteen tissue samples (six from the middle of each segment of the small intestine) of the appropriate age group were used to prepare permanent histological specimens. The histological sections were stained by Masson - Goldner method. The small intestine of the Stara Zagora white turkey was composed of four tissue layers: tunica mucosa, tunica submucosa, tunica muscularis and tunica serosa. Tunica mucosa had lamina epithelialis, lamina propria and lamina muscularis mucosae. The layers of the mucosa formed well-defined intestinal villi - villi intestinales. Lamina epithelialis was composed of highly differentiated simple columnar epithelium. Tunica mucosa in the three segments of the small intestine had clearly distinct tubular glands - gll. Intestinales. The histometric results showed that the growth of the mucosal structures and the mucosa was more intense in the first twenty-eight days, compared to the growth of the other layers of the intestinal wall. The most intense was the increase in the height and area of the intestinal villi. The height of the intestinal villi varied most markedly during the first twenty-eight days of the duodenal examination, while the area of the villi increased most in the jejunum, followed by the ileum and duodenum. The height of the intestinal epithelium increased most intensively 2.3 times in the jejunum mucosa. The thickness of the jejunal mucosa increased the most during this period, compared to the mucosa of the duodenum ileum.

  • Investigation of the effects of feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection on
           calcium metabolizm in cats.

      Abstract: Çalışmada feline coronavirus (FCoV) ile enfekte kedilerde enfeksiyonun kan kalsiyum seviyesi ve Ca metabolizmasını düzenleyen parametreler üzerine etkisinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada FİP pozitif, feline immunodeficiency virüs (FIV) ve feline leucoma virüs (FeLV) negatif kuru (n=10) ve yaş form (n=10) krıterlerini taşıyan 20 adet FİP li kedi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca 10 adet FİP, FIV, FeLV negatif sağlıklı kedi çalışmaya kontrol grubu olarak dahil edilmiştir. Tüm kedilerin serum örnekleri toplanarak bu örneklerde kedi spesifik ELISA test kitleri kullanılarak paratiroid hormon (PTH), paratiroid hormon benzeri protein (PTHrP), kalsitonin ve vitamin D3 (Vit D3) düzeyleri belirlendi. Ayrıca tüm serum örneklerinde otomatik biyokimya cihazı kullanılarak kalsiyum (Ca), magnezyum (Mg) ve Fosfor (P) ölçümleri yapıldı. Yapılan analizler sonucunda FİP’li kedilerin PTH (p<0,01), PTHrP (p<0,001) ve P (p<0,01) düzeyleri kontrol grubu kedilerin değerlerine göre önemli düzeyde yüksek olduğu belirlendi. Bununla birlikte FİP’li kedilerin kalsitonin ve vitamin D3, Ca seviyeleri kontrol grubuna göre yüksek olmakla birlikte iki grup arasında istatistiksel olarak herhangi bir farkın olmadığı anlaşıldı. In the study, twenty cats with clinical symthoms of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) and positive to FCoV were used. They were negative to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leucoma virus (FeLV). These cats were divided into two groups equally as dry (n=10) and wet form (n=10) of FIP. Ten cats clinically healthy and negative for all test were also used as control group. Serum samples were collected from all the cats and they were used to analyse parathyroid hormone (PTH), parathyroid hormone-realted protein (PTHrP), calcitonin and vitamin D3 (Vit D3), using feline specific ELISA test kits. Furthermore, Calcium (Ca), magnesium, (Mg) and phosphorus (P) levels were also measured in these serum samples. In the sudy, PTH (p<0,01), PTHrP (p<0,001) and P (p<0,01) levels were significantly higher in cats with FIP than those of control group. Additionally, calcitonin, vitamin D3 and Ca levels were found to be high in cats with FIP compared to those of control cats, but there were no statistically significance between these groups.

  • Investigation of the Effect of Linoleic Acid on Vascularization in
           Experimentally Induce Zoledronic Acid-Related Osteonecrosis in Rats

      Abstract: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is an increasingly common pathological condition whose pathophysiology is not fully understood and can be difficult to manage. The unique biological effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) include angiogenic, anticarcinogenic, antiatherosclerotic, antioxidative, immunomodulative and antibacterial effects. The aim of this study is to compare the osteonecrosis areas created by tooth extraction with the control group using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after the administration of zoledronic acid (ZA), CLA and a combination of both in the rat jaw. A total of 50 Wistar Albino male rats weighing 400-450 grams were used. The groups were randomly divided into 5 groups: the control group, the sham group, the group that received ZA, the groups that received CLA with ZA (100 mg / kg and 200 mg / kg), and the study lasted a total of 10 weeks. Regardless of the use of ZA, it was observed by SEM that vascularization was impaired in all groups with tooth extraction. Neovascularization did not occur in the groups where CLA was applied, regardless of the dose. It was concluded that SEM analysis and corrosion casts technique can be considered as an alternative method in such studies due to its accessibility and low cost in observing dental vascularization. However, no definite conclusion could be reached about the neovascularization efficiency of CLA within the period evaluated after tooth extraction.

  • Estimation of body weight and body condition score in dairy cows by
           digital image analysis method

      Abstract: In this study the body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) of lactating cows was estimated by using conventional (CM) the digital image analysis methods (DIAM). BCS is an important factor to facilitate different practices of management in dairy cattle. A total of 204 Holstein cows live images were taken by remote shutter camera. Six body measurements such as heart girth (HG), wither height (WH), hip height (HH), body length (BL), front hip-width (FHW), and back hip-width (BHW) were used for the assessment of BW and BCS by CM and DIAM. The estimation of CBW using HG, FHW, and BL variables was effective (R2 = 0.75). However, all the body measurements were ineffective for body condition score by measurements (MBCS), (R2 = 0.06, conventional) and DBCS (R2 = 0.05, digital) estimation. The measurements of WH, HG, FHW, BHW, and BL were precise in DBW estimation (R2 = 0.77). No significant differences were found across the assessment methods (CM, DIAM) for body measurements. The intra-class reliability coefficient (ICC) of conventional and digital (MBW, DBW) measurements was “good” and “excellent” between conventional and digital estimations. This study indicates that DIAM is a reliable method for determining DBW and MBW, and can be interchanged effectively with CM.

  • Morphological Study of Trachea and Cartilagines of the Larynx in Red Fox
           (Vulpes vulpes)

      Abstract: Bu çalışmada, kızıl tilki (Vulpes vulpes)'de trachea ve larynx’in kıkırdaklarının makroanatomik ve morfometrik özelliklerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla, farklı zamanlarda trafik kazasından toplanan toplam 12 yetişkin kızıl tilki (6 erkek, 6 dişi) kullanıldı. Larynx’in kıkırdakları ve trachea dikkatlice diseke edildi ve morfometrik ölçümler alındı. Bu çalışmanın sonucunda erkek ve dişi larynx ve trachea’ları arasında istatistiki olarak fark olduğu ve değerlerin erkeklerde dişilerden daha fazla olduğu gözlemlendi. Cornu rostrale ve cartilago thryoidea'nın cornu caudale'sinin oldukça belirgin olduğu görüldü. Cartilago cricoidea'nın kavisli bir yapıya sahip olduğu oval bir halka şeklinde olduğu tespit edildi. Cartilago arytenoidea'nın hem sağ hem de sol tarafında, proccessus muscularis üzerinde geriye doğru bir projeksiyon olduğu gözlendi. Cartilago epiglottis’in ucunun sivri olduğu, margines laterales’inin bükülmüş olduğu görüldü. Cartilago trachealis’in uçlarının birbirinden uzak olduğu ve musculus trachealis’in bu uçların altında kaldığı belirlendi. Bu çalışma ile solunum havasının geçtiği yol üzerinde bulunan larynx ve trachea’nın macro anatomik özellikleri ortaya konularak, morfometrik olarak cinsiyetler arasındaki farklar belirtilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın yaban hayvanları ve solunum sistemi üzerinde yapılacak çalışmalara ışık tutacağı öngörülmektedir. Ayrıca teşhis ve tedavi noktasında katkıda bulunabileceği düşünülmektedir.

      Abstract: Türkiye’ de köpeklerde mavi dil seroprevalansının ilk kez araştırıldığı bu çalışmada Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi Hayvan Hastanesi’ ne Karadeniz Bölgesi’ ndeki 6 ilden (Ordu, Samsun, Giresun, Artvin, Trabzon ve Sinop) getirilen ve daha önce distemper ve/veya parvovirus aşılaması yapılmış köpekler örneklendi. Ayrıca Samsun, Sivas ve Tokat’ dan mavi dil aşılaması yapılmamış sürülerden örneklenen sığır, keçi ve koyun kan numuneleri de mavi dil seroprevalansı yönünden incelendi. Çalışma için toplanan tüm serum örneklerinde mavi dil virus antikorlarının varlığı c-ELISA (ID Screen® Bluetongue Competition ELISA kiti) kullanılarak araştırıldı. ELISA testi sonunda köpek ve sığırların kan serumlarında mavi dil enfeksiyonuna karşı seropozitiflik saptanmazken, keçi ve koyun serumlarında ise seroprevalans, %65.2 (Tokat ve Samsun) ve % 8.6 (Sivas) olarak tespit edildi.Çalışma sonunda hem koyun hem de keçilerde seropozitifliğin belirlendiği iller ve çevresinde daha kapsamlı araştırmaların planlanması ve özellikle bu illerdeki sokak köpeklerinde ayrıntılı bir taramanın yapılması gerektiği sonucuna varıldı.

  • Quantification of mineral and toxic elements in milk of dairy cows by

      Abstract: Milk is an important component of mammalian metabolism which included micro and macronutrients. The objective of this study was to survey the concentrations of minerals and toxic elements in cow milk samples by inductively coupled plasma-mass (ICP-MS). In this study, it was analyzed the content of sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, titanium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, selenium, arsenic, cadmium, thallium, lead in cow milk samples (n=25) collected from Kahramanmaraş province of Turkey. The highest levels recorded for potassium, calcium and sodium with average concentrations of 1587.36, 1157.98, 643.34 mg L-1, respectively. The results revealed that there was no toxic element contamination in cow milk samples. Regular element analysis of cow's milk, which is the most widely used milk in dairy industry, is important for health.
